  • Normally a electronic problem with cordless tool controllers shows as a burnt spot, or a bubble or crack in the resin coating.
This time there is no obvious sign of failure so to find out if the speed controller is at fault you can just cut it out and wire the saw direct through the switch.
If It now works then the speed controller needs to be replaced.

I wish your camera was focused on what you're doing.

Ok, I got the same problem with my makita multi tool. I stored it for a few months, and then when I first put in the battery, huge smoke is pouring out. I disassembled, and found that the controller had a short inside it, and it was producing the smoke of burning epoxy. I was surprised to find that a new controller was around $80 for this $120 tool. Youch.
I was looking around the web to see if anyone else had had a problem with a failed makita controller, but this is the only example I found. I bet it's a pretty common problem though.
So how did this happen? For me, I was using the tool and it worked fine, then put it away in the shed for 3 months. Then, when I first put the battery it, it started smoking. What happened in the meantime to cause this? It might have been the heat of this summer, or it might have been freezing weather of the last few weeks. I don't think heat or cold would affect this epoxy-covered controller though. Maybe it was just 'time' for it to die.

Hi, which wires to connect to check if the controller board is broken? Is it the wire from motor, connect it direct to battery connector?

Hi, the black wire you cut that you say is sometimes burnt, is burnt on mine, can I cut this out and reconnect the wires not sure what that blob of glue is for, earth?

The blob of glue is probably the remains of the crimp connector. You may have to cutbthe whole wire out if it's burnt all the way down

@@deandohertygreaser hi, I wish I could send you picture. Don't understand why there would be a connector, as black to black wire, looks like epoxy resin
