    Thanks for the videos, they are really helpful! I have a question about modulation. How do I modulate a knob on a synth (for example, polysynth) even when the note is not playing? For example, I want to apply an LFO to the filter cutoff knob even when the synth is not receiving any midi notes. I tried doing it with a group, but got the same effect where the modulation restarts when a new note is played. I also tried it with a chain, thinking the chain's lfo was separate, but this also had the effect that it only modulated on notes. Would this have to be automation, or is there another way to do this using the modulation controls?

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 лет назад +2

      Polysynth will not generate sound if you don't play a note, well if you have a very long release it will obviously continue to sound when you depress a key. To add modulator = Press the + sign in the modulation section of the Polysynth. In the Device Browser select "Classic LFO". Press the little mod-button (I call it "dot and arrow" or "skeleton key". Now all buttons in the Polysynth will shift color slightly to show that you can apply modulation to them. Pull the filter cutoff knob with the mouse and drag until you see a blue-ish line around the knob. You will the the line animating with the LFO waveform and speed. Now this filter cutoff is animating at all times, even when the sequencer is stopped and you don't play a key.
      Make sure that "Note Trigger" is deactivated. This is the button that makes the LFO reset on each keypress.
      Beat LFO will sync to your DAW playtime, so for more "floating" LFO use the Classic LFO. Personally I use the Classic LFO for most situations.
      Did this answer your question? Glad you like my videos, appreciate it!

      @@MattiasHolmgren A lot of how Bitwig works is becoming clear, but the one thing I'm struggling with (and what I struggle with in most daws) is navigating the Arranger and Piano Roll. I'm not talking about just placing a clip or a note on the piano roll, it's more about zooming in and out, nudging clips and notes left and right, copying and pasting multiple clips and notes, making notes sound more human-like (goes along with nudging and offsetting), setting the snap, having no snap when needed, etc, etc. I get so frustrated trying to navigate both Arranger and Piano roll; I'm constantly trying to re-position the views, pulling the scrollbar left/right, dragging the mouse, etc, and it wastes so much time just to place a clip or note when working with a lot of clips and notes. I scroll to the left and goes way too far, I scroll to the right and never seems to get far enough, etc. Would it be possible for you to do a detailed video of editing clips and notes using the various tools in Bitwig? I've seen some of your vids that cover some of this stuff, but they don't seem to go as deep as a user might need to go when it comes to editing clips and piano notes for a complex song. I'd just like to see how someone uses the tools with larger projects.

    Learn the basics of how modulators work within Bitwig. What are they, and how can we use them in various ways to make our sounds come alive.
    Most modern DAW's have limited modulation. They offer automation and maybe LFO as the only way of modulating your tracks. In Bitwig you have a flora of modulation devices like ParSeq-8, Random, LFO, AHDSR, Math, Macros, Step Sequencer etc.
    In this video we use the Organ Synth of Bitwig and I explain how we can modulate the organ harmonic parameters to make the sound come alive.
    Furthermore, we look at how to modulate a modulator. This is where things get interesting and the power of Bitwig really shines.
    Lean how quick and easy it is to work in Bitwig Studio 2 DAW.
    What are you favourite modulators of the Bitwig Device suite?
    Please let me know in the comments.
    I hope you find the information useful and please let me know if you have any questions.
    Thanks for watching,

    Coming from a traditional classical composition education and classical piano study I've been super afraid of getting into DAWs. Finally after years of avoiding it I finally got BitWig 8-Track and intend to upgrade to the primary version soon. Your tutorials are a gem and a needle in the haystack. There's not too much out there for BitWig, so thanks for your dedication. I watch now about 10 minutes of your tutorials each day so that I will gradually become familiar with this new way to interact with music making.

It's an excellent DAW, and as you said, there's not really tons of good videos on the DAW which explains how it works for a beginner in DAW enviroments. I try to fill that gap with my channel, but I also have a more broad spectrum of videos for general creativity, production and composition topics. Thanks for watching my content! Very cool! coincidentally I started experimenting with the modulators last week. I really like how they separated the modulators in bitwig 2 from the specific devices, makes it even more powerful and re-usable. Super new them (especially the specific parameters of each modulator and how they affect the sound) but I like how you can combine them! Also, didn't know if you already knew but there is a built in spectrum analyzer device, you don't have to use the eq to see the signal shape. Using bitwig is becoming better and better thanks to your videos, I'm having a lot of fun together with a buddy learning how to use it :)

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 лет назад

      Hey Youssef, yeah the modulators are so fun to play with and it's very quick to make movement in the sounds. I had the same thought after they "broke out" the modulators, it makes more sense. Indeed, I know of the Spectrum Analyzer Device, but I add the EQ because if I need to adjust any bands I have the EQ already loaded up, so it's faster to just add the EQ directly. And I'm kinda "damaged" since using the Pro-Q so much and getting used to having EQ and Spectrum Analyzer in one device. =) Did you check out the new Arturia Pigments synth. It seems to "borrow" the visual aspect of Bitwig Modulators into the synth. Yeah, it's a very good practise to be able to see how the LFO's move and how your adjustments effect the sound spectrum. Good times! Thanks for checking my videos buddy! More fun to explore the universe together!

    Oh, and right to the most decent part of Bitwig :) Thank you very much, Mattias! This video seems particularly inspiring for me, like this flowing "pad" sound with details so much! And the result, with those bell plucks at higher frequencies, thanks to modulators, is very beautiful! You were right, never thought Organ could produce such a wonderful sound. Will definitely try it for pads in my tracks!
    As for modulators, surely that's big new part with fantastic possibilities. Especially given they managed to make the visual part fast enough to not hurt the overall DSP performance (on Linux at least, I've heard, users complain on the GUI performance on Mac, but not aware of the exact issues). But you're right, with great power comes great responsibility, and it looks like you can use almost any modulator to control almost any parameter, but… hmmm… what exact one I should? :) I think, it's time now to collect some kind of the "best recipes" of combinations of modulators, which lead to well-known and desired results. For example, we know, how to set up ADSR to get bass, plucks, pads etc. We know FM and phase modulation from "quick" modulations to get certain sort of timbre. I'm sure, there should be a "best of" list also for these modulators settings and combinations with expected results. I thinks, several of those are already in your video!
    One thing I noticed in the modulators is that although the list looks full, some important things are still absent. I personally miss multi-stage envelope with mouse-adjustable stages and curves, and volume shaper, to quickly emulate the side-chain or do things on transitions. Basically, any user-defined shape of signal (wavetable modulator?) as a modulator would be very helpful. Maybe, version 3 or minor updates afterwards would bring some of these)
    And just small addition to the chains concept I recently noticed: for FX chains in synthesizers I noticed in my experiments, that the chain is in sort of pre-fader position concerning output knob or even pan. So if I set up some effects as just sibling ones, have, say, output knob not on 0.0 dB and then move the effects to FX chain together, the sound will change. Maybe not so important, but I was looking for the saturation source in my patch a couple of minutes the other day =)
    Thanks again for a great video, Mattias! So pleasant to watch and so much to learn, as always! Good luck with your next productions and episodes!

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Alexey, good post as always. Thanks, the Organ is really a great little device. If you change the type from "RICH" to "PURE" you can also get an even cleaner sine wave in the Organ. So, it's a great starter device if you want to do FM or just have a pretty pure sine for further processing. Glad you liked the little bell pad sound I got out of it in this video.
      Indeed, MultiSegments is also something I really miss which I use extensively in Zebra 2, Omnisphere etc. Once you start working with Multi Segment Envelopes you can't go back. =)
      I hope they will add this soon to the modulator devices. Until then we have to do it with Automation like in all other DAWs.
      Yeah, you have to be aware of levels while playing around with devices. Saturation, isn't that a feature? =)
      Thanks again Alexey! Producing the Zebra 2 video we talked about today and using the excellent Color Copy delay to get some extra vibe. Such a lovely delay with THAT groovy vibe when you twist the knobs. I'm so much in love with happy accidents in plugins that gives us a more analogue feel and grit.

    • @aclexvideo
      @aclexvideo 5 лет назад +2

      @@MattiasHolmgren Thanks, Mattias! Thanks for suggestion about another source of sine wave - it's often needed, I used to obtain it from the Phase-4, but Organ would be also useful!
      Saturation is always good, indeed, but in this case it sort of lived its life out of my control, so I was little afraid of it :-D You know, we always very careful having just obtained the proper sound, proper (but yet unsaved!) settings and it tries to slip off every time) I also like FX chain for possibility to save the effects in single preset in this case. Otherwise, I think, something like Channel Strip from Logic is needed (don't even know, if it's implemented in Bitwig).
      Oh, nice, good luck with another Zebra2 video, looking forward to it! I see, also like the sound of changing settings, sometimes they're quite beautiful) Also nice, when smooth transition with predicted effect is implemented, I think, I've read, ValhallaRoom has this feature. It's save to automate and modulate it then, very nice!

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 лет назад +2

      In Bitwig a Channel Strip is basically that you add a Chain Device, then you fill that with your devices and instruments etc. Then you save that Chain Device, just drag the Chain Device to your preset browser to the right. Voila! =) But that won't save the Volume/Pan setting, Sends-settings etc. So I know what you mean. It would be useful to just drag a whole track to the Preset Browser and be able to save it like a whole Channel Strip setting. As of now, it's not possible.

    • @aclexvideo
      @aclexvideo 5 лет назад +2

      @@MattiasHolmgren Yes, I also found Chain device very useful, especially for its "Mix" knob, very handful to check the differences made with effects to sound. But overall yes, I don't think it's a big problem, as instrument presets, with just a couple of effects, are the most valuable and useful, in my opinion, while it's so rare case, when you need to save the track as a whole. The latter case is more to the topic of your video about templates, I think :)

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 лет назад +1

      Yeah, the Chain Mix knob is very useful. Having a whole bunch of effects instantly mixable. Parallell compression in Bitwig is like the easiest to accomplish. Are you observing any NAMM news? I just saw the Spectrasonics Omnisphere 2.6 announcement. Another great update to a uber synth! There is an update to the arpeggiator which looks sleek. Im glad rhey update it rather than dropping a whole new synth. Omnisphere still is king for film (and many other cases) ;) personal opinion... 😁☀️

      Hey Rom, I appreciate the kind feedback. Yes, the modulators is really the power core of Bitwig. If you start to use them and experiment you really grasp the power. There's so many use cases where the modulators can be helpful; super controllable side-chaining, ducking effects, ambient soundscapes, adding keytracking modulator to move EQ Peaks = instant Vowel Filter etc. etc. =) The best part is the instant re-usability if you save your effect chains in a Chain Device.
