i cant imagine being the guy playing the same thing throughout the thing. he probably has the most challenging part, having to keep a steady underlying rhythm for the other instrumentalists to rely. quite a profound piece if i say so myself, i really want to write something like this.
It would be easy for him is he actually was playing the same thing, but he's not. Accents and dynamics change all throughout the piece even though the rythm doesnt move.
Yes, the real hero is the one in the middle holding that same steady rhythm without pause for the entire piece - bravo! I suppose the earplugs help him keep his concentration.
Many other recordings on YT seem to use larger, flat piece of wood, with various mallets, plain drumsticks even. But this here is surely the correct sound - one that is alive :-)
I saw this performed live by Nexus in 1984 at the BBC Proms in London, and they used proper claves similar to the ones used here. A much fuller sound than plain woodblocks. Nexus also used greater numbers of repetitions before each change, making the work somewhat longer (I'm not relying on memory here - I have a tape recording of the concert, as it was fortunately broadcast in a repeat on the radio and I was able to listen again!)
It would be interesting if someone put this in a DAW to see how close to tempo they stayed throughout the piece. I know these are some of the best percussionists in the world but the concentration & feel is out of this world.
Did you tune the claves? Player 2's instrument sounds like 2 notes, maybe minor 3rd. I remember hiring a set claves to play this piece but we obviously couldn't adjust the pitch. It certainly sounds like whole tone intervals.
I really like this piece, but I really don't like if its performed with a music stand. In my opinion it ruins the performance, because the players are just staring on the notes…😕
I used to think that way until I was forced to play minimalist music in my chamber orchestra. The amount of focus needed is insane. Once you play it and realize the effect is to be able to see the gradual change. The type of music is actually extremely difficult to write. I encourage you to listen to Arvo Part's Fratres (Brothers). That made me change my perspective on this type of music.
Forse ti sbagli. Può non piacere ma c'è moltissima tecnica. E poi può non piacere ma citare i nostri escrementi... Bah non è molto edificante.viva la democrazia
haha lol as soon as i heard his name i knew i need to hear 1 minute and then the rest i repeat better in my head. Fake lazy composer, he would do better with film and music licensing, and still not so good as others of this aerea
Chapeau to the guy who has to do the same rythm for 12 minutes, while the others around him go wild. That's amazing concentration.
Wizard vs sorcerer type thing

My thoughts exactly. SUPER gifted!
Short ride in a fast machine, the woodblock guy
@@KinkyLettuce Or the guy in bolero 😂

I remember this from college, the one had to be pretty solid at keeping tempo and if you got lost it was really difficult to get back in.

You're from Boston too, huh? Blinkah!
Que capacidade incrível de cada músico de manter seu tempo determinado na pauta!
Magnificent.
Did not know Walking Dead had used this piece. Good choice.

Of course, both are great minimalist composers

its really not a good look for an amateur composer to shit talk one of the most respected minimalist composers of all time.
Looking a bit cocky today, aren't we?
Still better than Alma Deutscher
