I have both A7RIII and A7III and find I am using the A7III more often, but it is nice to have the A7RIII and 42 megapixels when I need it. Cheers and thanks.
Easy, buy the one you can afford. I have the A7R3 and it has great detail especially when shooting cityscapes. Also, the dynamic range is great when opening up shadows from dark images. People cry about files being too large however, space is cheap nowadays and that's not really a problem in this day and age.
Well said. My first Full Frame mirrorless was the Rii. Before that was the full frame a99mark i. And now have the Riii. Can’t go back to 24mp. But, would have loved a 7iii to start out with back in the day. They are all just tools in your craft and should be used the specific way you need them to in order to master that craft. Cheers! 📸👍🏽
First camera ever is the A7III for me and I'm loving it. I can see the advantages of the RIII especially for cropping, but my business really needs to grow for me to look into that.
Thank you for your video! I sold my A7RII a week ago in order to update my camera. I was on the fence between the A7III and A7RIII. I was still more inclined towards the A7RIII and at the end I went for it. Today, I bought the A7RIII with the new Sony 35mm f1.8. Funny story, when I came home and unpacked the Sony 35mm F1.8 and started moving the lens up and down the elements inside the lens were moving like a chuck of some heavy liquid. I called back to the store and found out that that is how Sony made this lens and as soon as you connected to the camera and power it up it stops.... Never knew that before so I am just saying for people not to freak out like I did ... Apparently it has to do with the focusing system and some magnets. I wanna do more research on it.
@Faizan Noman Just got the a7riii and the sigma 24-70, got the 6500 as a back up. I'm happy with the a7riii especially with the $2200 price point. Although, really debating on ex-changing to get the a7iii for the low- light though...
Whether or not they're at the same level, I don't know, but the A7III does have weather sealing. As an A7RII user, I totally agree with the small RAW request!
@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer Sony also doesn't mention weather sealing on the A7RIII on their website. Multiple retailers list the A7III as having a weather sealed design. In fact, all Sony full frame mirrorless cameras have been noted to have weather sealing. A quick Google search would back this up too. It could also depend on one's definition/standard for weather sealing. Based on some tests seen online, some might not consider Sony alpha cameras to be weather sealed, especially compared to modern DSLRs but they do at least have some weather seals.
Actually funny enough the US website says the exact same thing on the A7III but not on our website. But I have been to Sony head quarters here in NZ to do talks and workshops, and all the staff there told me it’s not weathersealed. So I dunno. I’d take the word of Sony over other users personally
Thanks for a really practical and honest review .I have just bought a second hand Sony a7iii and am tempted to get a a7riii as a second camera sometime next year so found the video very helpful.
My A7iv has a stuck pixel so it has to go back to Sony (I have tried all the fixes) so Im looking at picking up a third camera second hand. This has answered a number of questions for me.
This is the best review I have seen so far when comparing the 3 cameras! I like to hear experiences rather than chart reading and extreme surreal tests! I would love to see a video where you teach about your settings for photography and video. 😊 Thank you so much for sharing!
Have an A7III, and just picked up the RIII, and beyond what was mentioned in this video, the main drawbacks / strengths of each camera to me are: that the A7III has much better low light high iso performance. You can shoot at 6400 and barely see any noise, hell 12800 isn't that bad. However the A7RIII when shot at a lower ISO seems to have a bit more dynamic range, and slightly sharper images overall. Beyond that the other weird difference is that I had both cameras the A7III, and A7RIII both shooting at 30 4K 100 on an interview subject for about a full day, and the A7III would bring up the overheating icon pretty regularly whereas it appeared that the A7RIII kept cool throughout the day. On the flip side, I'd say I liked the video quality from the A7III better, so again a weird tradeoff.
Awesome video. You say that its not worth upgrading from the a7iii to the a7riii. What would you say if someone is just looking to buy one and start from scratch and can afford both?? Would you still purchase the a7riii over the a7iii?
hey Chris, good overview cheers. I would have loved to hear your real world handheld experience with the R3 and how much you can slow the shutter with 35 and the 85 before camera shake become noticeable and affects the image. I'm impressed with how slow i can go on on my 73 and because I'm looking at the R3 as my next body I wondered how it compares? I understand the R3 has an extra stop of stabilisation but at the same time a huge sensor so must be some trade off? Would be great to make a video doing a handheld test on with them both and 2 different focal lengths like the 35 and 85 seeing as its what most wedding shooters like yourself use the most. Appreciate any and all feedback on this! keep up the content :-)
Yeah it does, it just also means slower editing and more SD cards. It gets to a point where megapixels don’t matter so much unless you really want to print huge
I chose to go A7R3 for the same reasons. Also note that the A7III doesn’t come with a charger so once you add up the differences in specs. The additional cost is quite reasonable. I do wish Sony had resolution options in camera though. There are times when I know 42MP Is just way overkill.
i got my a7riii before the a7iii came out... was a big miffed about huge cost difference but thats because im not a pro & it was a lot of dollar for me.. but will say I love this camera & has been a great year shooting with it.. would love the abililty to shoot 42 or 26 mega pixels though ,would be a great feature
Spot on, and balanced within short but effective vid. EVF and monitor improvements help make for better ergonomics. Great point about poor functionality of touch screen - hope for “touch to release shutter” in next model. Happy new year, guy.
Paul M shutter release would be great . Additionally, focusing would be great too while being in photo mode vs just being able to move the focus point .
Hi Chris, first of all congrats on the great content. Your channel is only headed in one direction, keep the epic content coming, I subbed after a few minutes into your first video I found. Secondly, some advice if you get some time please : I'm undecided on the A7Riii and A7iii. I shoot video and photo, currently unprofessionally (have done a few paid gig's but nothing serious) however I want to upgrade from my current A6300 because I've found a passion for video and photo. I want to start taking it more seriously and begin a career in photo and video. I don't know whether I'll do more video or photo so can't use that as a deciding factor but possibly wedding video or photo in the near future as well. I'm currently living and travelling around China / Asia with my wife (past 2 years) and recently fallen in love with photo and video so when we leave in a few months to settle down in New Zealand I can't imagine going back to my corporate job in finance and want to do photo and video full time. The two cameras here in China are not that far apart in price so that's not a deciding factor either. Would you recommend either of the two after hearing my ideas?? If i did choose the A7iii I could probably pick up some extra glass with that difference but nothing major. One thing I also wish to know is how is editing the 42MP images? My PC is epic so won't have issues there but my travel laptop isn't super new. How do you cope editing 1000's of wedding shots? Many thanks in advance and don't hesitate to respond only when you have plenty free time.
Hi Chris. Thanks for all your RUclips videos /content. They are very, very informative. For you wedding events where you want capture people that are constantly moving around and kids that never seems to stop moving, do you find that the A7R3's autofocus system of good enough or would the newer autofocus system on the A73 be better? I am current a Fuji X-T30 and X-100V user. I am very close to switching my out all my camera gears for a Sony system. I shoot a lot of children's events such as birthday, group events, kids sports events etc.
Yeah of coz it cannot be sealed as well as the A9 for the price of an A7iii, i think for your type of work, A9 would be the best. For me, weather sealing is not a warranty for water-proof thus surviving under light rain or foggy days is just good enough, my 6300 w/o weather sealing even survive after 3 years of traveling with many foggy and rainy (light) day of shooting. Btw, keep up the good content, i came across ur channel and love watching every new episodes
Excellent video. Helpful for my decision-making. 4:54 - the difference is that the A7R3 has more detail sharpness because of the 42MP resolution, correct?
The truth of the issue is, the a7siii is all rapped up in the a7iii. They put two cameras in one. They just didn’t say it. We are now on the 4 still no s3. Read between the lines. Look at how Sony operates. They carved out a market share with full frame alpha line. They need to milk that for everything they can get. They cannot improve the s3 anymore right now cause it pushes into the f5-7 market. Look at the specs of those cameras. To build an actual improved s3 camera you have to enter into the specs of those cameras. That was not Sony’s plan. They just released the f-9 and is now being challenged by black magic. Which will steal market share from Sony. You shouldn’t really see a7siii from Sony. They should at minimum go straight to 4. And that’s 10 bit 4:22 60 or 120 4K. And it looks like when that comes it will be too late. They need the a74 specs right now as described above to stay relevant. But they are dragging their feet. Who knows.
What about for video? I've heard the video is better on the a7iii because it uses the whole sensor to down sample for the 4k, while for the a7riii it pixel peeps. Have you compared the video at all? And what's your general experience of the a7riii? Cheers
Hi Chris. Thanks for great comparison video. Do you find the weird "twinkle/shimmer" (that's what I call it) artifact in the A7Riii EVF distracting. To me, when viewing scenes like a forest floor, all the twinkling/shimmer is incredibly distracting and I haven't figured out how to get rid of it. It can't be pattern moire because it's an irregular pattern. Thoughts appreciated.
Hi chris very nice video. I have a question. What about low light video recording? Some youtuber said that the 7 III is better than the RIII. Have you tested it?
I still don't get why the top Sony camera lacks slog and features like drag to focus. I bought a9 and I want it to have any feature available in other Sony cameras. I really want this drag to focus feature, and I guess it is very easy to implement with a new firmware, but Sony just doesn't care.
Hi Chris, I've started photography last year and lately just booked my first wedding. Have a Canon 6Dii ( I got what I could afford at the time) at the moment but really think I should pick up another camera, would you recommend getting a different brand? I am really leaning to the a7iii at the moment. If I do get a Sony, would you recommend getting a metabone first over getting new Sony lens or the other way round?
I don't have a Sony but I have used the Canon 6D continuously since it came out! If you just started last year, I would suggest learning the craft first with your 6Dii. You've got a very decent camera already, it's just perhaps not a good as the latest from Sony. What lenses do you have for wedding photography? I have taken about 15 weddings with my 6D and as I'm creative and experienced with using it, I have produced albums which would rival the best of them out there. I'd hire a creative and quick-thinking photographer with a standard camera over a novice with the latest and greatest any day of the week! If you're seriously thinking of switching, perhaps it's best not to invest too heavily in Canon glass as by all accounts, native lenses do perform much better on the Sony system. So there you have it, that would be my 2 cents of advice! Happy shooting
Hey Dannie, it’s very hard from my experience to shoot 2 different brands side by side, it got real confusing. Mostly because Sony is so very different to any DSLR and has a massive learning curve as it is. I’d suggest if your switching to Sony go all in and sell your canon. Otherwise maybe buy another Canon, from what I’ve heard the 6D2 is a step up and a step down depending on what specs your looking at, so maybe a used 5D4 or something? Also the adapters really don’t work as well as native Sony glass and you’ll get super frustrated with it at a wedding. Another option. Get an A73 and a 55mm 1.8 ssuuuch a good combo and budget isn’t too bad
The Metabones is crap. You will be able to use Canon lenses but they don't work like the native sony lens. You will end up throwing your Canon lens away.
Agreed on all points. I bought the Riii mainly because the A7iii was impossible to find a few months back. After living with it and shooting with it almost daily, I'm glad I bought the Riii for that awesome resolution. Having said that, the two main drawbacks to me of the A7riii have to do with the big 42mp sensor. Great detail to be sure, but with a sensor that resolving I find my shutter speeds need to be faster to not introduce shake or vibration. Anything below about 1/200 handheld with a 50mm or 85mm has potential to be soft, and that's something I didn't have to deal with when I had a 24mp sensor. Plus, the files are huge and that's a royal pain...a pain when shooting 85mb files redundant with only one really fast card slot, a pain editing, and they eat up storage space like nothing else I've worked with.
@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer oh I didn't expect the answer for that. Thank you. Actually I want to manage my beard these days, but It doesn't work well. I found your video by chance, and your beard looks neat and clean. I guess A7R3's fine resolving power is good. LOL And i have a7m2, i'm considering to upgrade to m3 or r3.. and your video was very helpful. Anyway, I subscribed your channel, keep up, your video is good. (sorry for my short english)
Thank you for this input. Just an FYI, even A7III has a crop mode. Just that in crop mode it shoot pictures around 10 mega pixel. Should be good enough for people who would like to have this mode as an option. It's details will not be as sharp as an 18 mega pixel but it does work.
What you said is not true, I believe the A7iii has the same kind of crappy weather sealing as the A7Riii which is lacking protection at the underplate of it. I never had problems in the rain so far
Sometimes people mention some form of not entirely pleasant hyper-sharpness in bokeh and portraits with high-mpx cameras. Do you have any experience with that? Another point sometimes mentioned is slight loss of sharpness / focus / or blur at shutter-speeds where a lower-mpx camera would give sharp results. Not sure about that latter again, but wanted go ask. Finally, could you maybe do a comparison video of the bokeh and rendering of faces between a cropped 85 to 135mm vs a native 135? That alone seems a great money-saver + up portability, but I’m curious how faces may look different. Love the videos: never feel too long, always informative!
Heya. So the bokeh issue, never heard of it, never experienced it and I have to assume it’s people either pixel peeping at 200% or just making it up (but I could be wrong) and I also don’t see how that’s possible. The focus shutter speed thing, the 2 cameras are the same, the difference is because when you zoom in to 100% you go much much further in with the R3, hence you can see more detail and more imperfections at the same time. Not an issue for me as I export at 5000px on the long edge. Does that make sense? Typically I would say yeah you wanna use a faster shutter speed with a high MP camera just because you can see more imperfections. Happy to do that comparison also.
I should add also, I’m not the type of photographer / RUclipsr that’s super worried about micro contrast and sharpness haha I’m more interested in colours, light and emotion etc
Be interesting to hear if you've had any issues with firmware upgrades on the A7R3 from 1.01 to 2.0 then 2.10 - i got the file loss bug at 2.0 and a horrible nightmare getting to upgrade to 2.1 .. still done, interesting to hear others stories :).... and i wonder now if i should sell the 5d3.. or keep it as a backup... :P ... i must stop rambling now :) Merry Xmas
I had zero issues going to 2.0, then 2.10 later. I think people reporting issues have problems with their computer and not necessarily Sony’s fault. As a technician I see firmware update failures all the time for many different types of hardware. Some folks really shouldn’t attempt these things on their own.
Stop thinking job and think business and u can buy this type of gear too slowly but surly... it's works for you, or you can just work for it. Either way u gotta put In some work
Well you don’t have much choice if it’s raining at the wedding, sometimes you just have to shoot in the rain, also sometimes you can get amazing photos in the rain

I still don't get why the top Sony camera lacks slog and features like drag to focus. I bought a9 and I want it to have any feature available in other Sony cameras. I really want this drag to focus feature, and I guess it is very easy to implement with a new firmware, but Sony just doesn't care.
Hi Chris, could you do a video on the best lenses to use for car photography, thanks
A7riii Love mine.
Well if Russell Crowe likes it, I'm sold.
Great video!
Does sony a7riii record 60fps in 4k?
no
how do you manager your beard
Usually myself haha to cheap. But I went to the barbers the other day.
@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer oh I didn't expect the answer for that. Thank you. Actually I want to manage my beard these days, but It doesn't work well. I found your video by chance, and your beard looks neat and clean. I guess A7R3's fine resolving power is good. LOL
And i have a7m2, i'm considering to upgrade to m3 or r3.. and your video was very helpful.
Again, I’m just going off what Sony told me in person. Either way I’m not fussed
Great Video
Chris Turner this really resonates.
Thank you for answering, looking forward to maybe seeing that comparison video (:

Be interesting to hear if you've had any issues with firmware upgrades on the A7R3 from 1.01 to 2.0 then 2.10 - i got the file loss bug at 2.0 and a horrible nightmare getting to upgrade to 2.1 .. still done, interesting to hear others stories :).... and i wonder now if i should sell the 5d3.. or keep it as a backup... :P ... i must stop rambling now :) Merry Xmas
I never upgraded to 2.0 and just went straight to 2.1 without an issue.
@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer Lucky lol :)
I had zero issues going to 2.0, then 2.10 later. I think people reporting issues have problems with their computer and not necessarily Sony’s fault. As a technician I see firmware update failures all the time for many different types of hardware. Some folks really shouldn’t attempt these things on their own.
Lots of updates fail because they use the wrong USB cable, and I definitely find the MacOS updates are less reliable then the PC versions.

The best comment 😄
Stop thinking job and think business and u can buy this type of gear too slowly but surly... it's works for you, or you can just work for it. Either way u gotta put In some work
Totally. I worked real hard to get here.
I can think of no photo worth shooting in the rain for...
Well you don’t have much choice if it’s raining at the wedding, sometimes you just have to shoot in the rain, also sometimes you can get amazing photos in the rain
