Great video! Just wrapped up my '05 4WD 5.4l. I had a skid plate and a plastic drip pan in the way, but both came off easy, and the rest was as shown. Nice tip about the spring clamp removal tool! Probably the best $30 I've ever spent, I hate those things!
Thank you sir for the video,I just tracked down my oil leak which is pretty severe to this problem, mine is a 2002 f150 with a 4.6 but it looks the same except mine will be easier because its a 2 wheel drive.I got a new gasket today and will tackle this on my next days off,it will be nice to finally stop this oil leak.
+jimthecarguy Well I got a chance today to do it and it really wasn't too bad,the worst part of the whole job was that hose clamp which I tried to get off and couldn't so I got that tool and it still wasn't easy but i got it,I replaced it with a normal one.The whole thing took between 4 and 5 hours but I wasted a lot of time with that clamp,it's sure nice not to have that oil leak anymore.
Thank you! Like Nicholas Ruiz, I also just used this video to help me fix my 03 4.6L Expedition. I wouldn't have had the confidence to do it without this video. But all went well, and my leak is fixed!!!
those gaskets are notorious for leaking on 4.6 and 5.4L ford engines. I would bet that the gasket was the culprit- as I have changed dozens of them for oil leaks in everything from crown vics to 4x4 trucks.
thanks for the video just had the same leak gona get to it first thing in the morning ,funny my truck is 97 same exact problem thanks watching your video first is a great guide.
The very last comment answered My question. Get it at the Ford Dealer. I have a 1998 Ford Expedition. Mine seems to be leaking from one of the oil cooling hoses. I can find the adaptor for the oil at most parts stores, but they don't have the other end that the 2 hoses attach to. Mine doesn't have clamps to take the hoses off I don't think. It looks like both peices are made together. It is the 5.4 engine.
Wow it's been a while since I heard someone from the inland talking . I used to spend every weekend during the summer at either HotDog beach or Sag Harbor .or Long Inland National speedway with our 10 second Camaro ..
mine was a 2004 fx4 and i did this real easy drain everything oil and coolant and remover the front bumper and condenser and raidator and shroud and oil filter remover lowerr raidation hose easy job now you have acess to the three bolts in the front and the fourth one long 3/8 extiniongs like two of them and a 10mm wobbley sock, dont need to remove the upper cooant hose or the switch , now yoiu have access to clean and put new gasket simple
Just got the adapter off!!!! Took about 3 hours haha. I had such a hard time getting that one bolt off that was right behind where you screw in your oil filter. On the front side where there are 3 bolts you can get to, it was the middle bolt. I was somehow able to get a drill with a long extension to get it off. I have one question though, did you use torque specs to put them back on? I don't even think I can use a torque wrench to put these back on.. Did you just tighten them as tight as you could get it? If you used torque wrench, what was your ft-lbs?
Jason W first let me say great job as for the torque spec I can look it up at work on Monday but if you do tighten them before then don't over tighten and strip out the bolts use a 1/4 inch ratchet to avoid a problem
Thanks, no need anymore. Got the entire job done! No more leak :D. Feels great to get that out of the way. Saved me a $500 bill.. Spent all together probably $90 on specialty tools I needed and coolant, also radiator flush to completely clean it. So now I have all these awesome tools and the exact coolant the truck needs. Life is good :) Took me all day haha, but well worth it. Only thing though is that I went driving around, and I can't get my engine temperature gauge to normal temp. I think normal temp is at the half way mark, but it sits at the 1/4 mark, even if I drive around for 30 minutes... Not sure what's up with that
Hey Jumthecarguy, I'm in the process of removing the 4 bolts. But I can't figure out what socket size I need? Nothing I have fits, either too big or too small! 3/8 is too small
Hello, I have a couple of questions...did you drain all of the oil first or just remove the filter? Did you use 1/4 or 3/8 drive? I have a 2004 f150 4x4 so I'm guessing it's the same process. My local dealer also said they would not have to drain all of the oil or coolant. That doesn't seem right from what I can tell. Thanks for any help! Tony
I had this leak for a while, and can't find the reason, now is leaking a lot all the inner side of the driver side wheel is fully oiled, I will chance the gasket this weekend :-)
I don't understand u say the housing had pitting and need replaced. Was the pitting on the gasket to block surface and was causing the leak? How much did the new housing cost from the dealer? I have same truck with same leak
+jimthecarguy I got it done, and must say your steps were actually helpful, all I had to replace was the gasket on it, nomore leaks. thank you for your video
I have some oil in my coolant reservoir and did a test for exhaust gasses and it was negative so we ruled out a blown head gasket, other forums have lead me to believe it could be a bad oil filter adapter gasket or Maybe the adapter itself, I'm having trouble finding the part (adapter) was wondering if you could point me in the right direction, I will be trying to work on it next week and want to have an adapter ready in case it isn't just the gasket. Thank you in advance
+Mikel Vartanian When ever I replace the adapter I always get it from the dealer believe it or not it was not that expensive from them.Good luck .Keep me posted and let me know if you need any further advice.
+Tim Cheaney If the car is an auto trans and If there is oil in the coolant. You many want to check the trans cooler in the radiator. They fail often.Keep me posted
+Tim Cheaney the gasket for the adapter was blown I wanted to change that first because the adapter was like $100 and the gasket was like $10 and it solved the problem. i had to drain it pretty well and there was a little residual oil in the coolant after I got it all back together but it didn't keep coming after I changed the gasket
Yeah this is so odd, I did everything perfectly. I totally drained the coolant, got almost every drop out after disconnecting all the hoses. After putting the new gasket on and putting everything back together. I did an exact 50/50 with the coolant and distilled water. I let the truck sit in idle for about 30 minutes while the radiator cap was off. The temp gauge wouldn't go past 1/4... So I thought that was odd. So I went driving around for 30 minutes to see if it would help, and nope... Stayed at 1/4 the entire 30 minutes... It won't go past 1/4. No idea what is going on. Before doing this coolant change, everything worked fine. Oh and forgot to mention, turned the heater on all the way through all of this, heater seams to put out heat.
I'm going to buy a scanner on Amazon right now. Been shopping around for the last 30 minutes trying to find which one is the best that isn't over maybe roughly $60 or so.
If you can scan the truck for the actual temp that will be great. Some of the big box auto stores will scan the truck for free here in NJ I'm not sure if they do that in Texas.
I have a 2008 lincoln 5.4 l engine. appears to be leaking same spot. same set up? gonna attempt myself. I didn't under the adapater part tho? I see gasket no problem but What a this adapator? thanks
Did it. Really easy on 5.4l 2008. Take slid plate off. Pull hoses off. Unplug wire. 4 bolts easy to get to. Replace gasket. 19lb torque bolts on. Replace hoses. Check pressure system for bubbles in coolant(fill as needed) check oil. All done!
jers3y85 The filter adapter is in the same area on the 2001 but is separate from the radiator hose housing. In the video above it shows the 2007 as having the radiator hose housing incorporated onto the filter housing as one piece, but on my 2002 f150 they are two parts instead. So your 2001 is easier to do like mine is
You didn't have to take out the front differential in order to replace the gasket? I have a 2004 Ford f150 4x4, and I did some investigating and it totally looks looks like I'm going to have to remove that differential...
Appreciate the quick response, or any at all! That's pretty cool. So I took my truck in today to a auto mechanic shop just so I could confirm that the leak is coming from the oil filter adapter gasket. They were the ones who mentioned that in order to change the gasket, they'd have to take off the front differential. Which honestly makes sense to me because after looking at it myself, its REALLY hard to get to and the one main thing in the way is the front differential. But that's a huge headache, even though I'd do it if I had to. I'm too poor right now to fork over $450 to change the gasket, so I'm defiantly doing it myself. Also I actually really enjoy working on my truck. I'll email you Friday for sure, without a doubt you will get an email from me! Thanks for your help, I defiantly appreciate it a lot. PS: I didn't think it mattered but I have a 2004 Ford F150 5.4, with 4x4. Although I think 2007 model is the same as 2004.
Thanks! I'll shoot an email your way. I'll be working all day tomorrow and don't really have access to internet when I'm out. I'll shoot an email over to you now, hopefully that's fine! Because I know you were saying to do it Friday. Hope that's fine! Thanks again
i have a 2002 expedition that i just bought Thursday. it has a leak by that looks like that. would i be able to get away with just changing the gasket.

My 06 4.2 F150 been leaking and thought it may be rear main seal w/ 186000 miles driven ..oil on filter but see it's coming from above Allen head plug on adaper was loose tightened it..you know I was under the truck looking to see where the dreaded F150 sqeaks and creaks sounds were coming from..lol..Buy American save jobs.
Hi i have the same truck with 4.2l v6 and the oil leak is coming from oil filter so what did u do fix the leak but i think in our triuck its the oil pimp gasket and not adapter like on other trucks
Bro, it wasn't that bad. You can totally tell what he did. It's a very tight spot. I agree the lighting could have been better but I still give him props. This video has clearly helped a lot of people so I think you're one of the few that has a problem with it.
Great video! Just wrapped up my '05 4WD 5.4l. I had a skid plate and a plastic drip pan in the way, but both came off easy, and the rest was as shown. Nice tip about the spring clamp removal tool! Probably the best $30 I've ever spent, I hate those things!
Michael Westenfelder Ya the spring clamp is the worst part of the job.Happy to help.

I will have to see if I can get the parts at the Ford dealer.
Great video, but i wonder why you changed the adapter and not just the gasket?
Was the housing pitted?
Wow it's been a while since I heard someone from the inland talking . I used to spend every weekend during the summer at either HotDog beach or Sag Harbor .or Long Inland National speedway with our 10 second Camaro ..
I'm guessing if you have a rear wheel drive F150 or Explorer or Expedition this job might be easier. That front axle seems to take up a lot of room.
mine was a 2004 fx4 and i did this real easy drain everything oil and coolant and remover the front bumper and condenser and raidator and shroud and oil filter remover lowerr raidation hose easy job now you have acess to the three bolts in the front and the fourth one long 3/8 extiniongs like two of them and a 10mm wobbley sock, dont need to remove the upper cooant hose or the switch , now yoiu have access to clean and put new gasket simple
Yeah your way soounds so much easier...not.
good info....better lighting needed.
thank you
+julio aguilar Thank you for your feedback and I did get better lighting for my new videos.
"Difficult to see" is correct. Some lighting would be very beneficial for your viewers.
Video was helpful, but I agree more light would be an improvement.
Great video, I'll be doing this swap on my 03 4.6 L Expedition soon.
+nicholas ruiz Good luck keep me posted.if you need any other advice let me know.Jim
If the gasket is what was leaking, was it necessary to replace the whole adapter?
in this case it needed to be replaced because of the pitting in the adapter. Thank for you question and for watching
Thanks for the video my f150 looks like it has the leak in the same spot. Know I can take a look. and get it fixed.
Good luck thanks for watching

Depending on the outside temp.1/2 way would be in the hot weather and 1/4 would be ok for the cold weather.Do you have good heat from the heater?
Couldn't tell if you had the front wheel off or not. Could it be accessed through the fender well?
Hey Jumthecarguy, I'm in the process of removing the 4 bolts. But I can't figure out what socket size I need? Nothing I have fits, either too big or too small! 3/8 is too small
Never mind found the right socket, its inbetween 7/16 and 3/8.. The number on the socket says 10
Sorry I just say your e mail.Yes as you know it is 10MM
Hello,
I have a couple of questions...did you drain all of the oil first or just remove the filter? Did you use 1/4 or 3/8 drive? I have a 2004 f150 4x4 so I'm guessing it's the same process. No I didn't drain the oil first and the ratchet was 3/8
How long does the job take
Is the 2007 and 2002 done the exact way it has 5.4
I had this leak for a while, and can't find the reason, now is leaking a lot all the inner side of the driver side wheel is fully oiled, I will chance the gasket this weekend :-)

I don't understand u say the housing had pitting and need replaced. Was the pitting on the gasket to block surface and was causing the leak? How much did the new housing cost from the dealer? I have same truck with same leak
Hi Daniel,The pitting was on the housing .From what I remember I thing the adapter was $150.00-175.00 from the dealer.
Ok thanks. Appreciate the quick response.
Let me know how you do or if you need any other info.
Hi, how do i know if pitting in the adapter? I have 05 Aviator
i have an 03 expedition, do i have to drain the oil too,
and do all these steps in your video will be the same for my truck
+officialYungTEK No you don't have to drain the oil and it should be almost the same.If you e-mail me Monday I can check on my computer at work.Jim

+hood800 Yes it should be

Depending on the outside temp.1/2 way would be in the hot weather and 1/4 would be ok for the cold weather.Do you have good heat from the heater?
Yes the heat seams to be fine coming from the heater. The weather here in Houston Texas is sort of in the 70s it seams right now with a nice breeze.
If you can scan the engine when its warm to see the actually temp that would help.In the 70's I think the gauge should be closer to the 1/2 way mark.
I'm going to buy a scanner on Amazon right now. Been shopping around for the last 30 minutes trying to find which one is the best that isn't over maybe roughly $60 or so.
If you can scan the truck for the actual temp that will be great. Some of the big box auto stores will scan the truck for free here in NJ I'm not sure if they do that in Texas.
to replace the gasket I will still have to drain the antifreeze?
Yes you should
what did the pitting look like? I've already replaced gasket and still getting oil in coolant
+Tim Cheaney If the metal is not perfectly smooth then you should replace it.Keep me posted. If you want to e mail me a picture I'll try to help.
I'll have to look at it and see. I'll update back
+Tim Cheaney Great

Thank you for your input and for watching
where can I order the replacement oil filter adapter? I have a 99 expedition 5.4l
The only place to get it would be at a Ford dealer .Good luck
Oh, never mind...just found my answer a few posts down!
whats the part number i cant find the adapter.. search keep giving me the gasket only
You should call the dealer to make sure that you get the correct one.The parts were not that expensive.Thank you for watching
How many book hours would you attribute to this repair?
The book said 1.4 hr but I know from experience it will take about 2-3 hr.
would this be the same set up for a 2001 5.4 f150?
jers3y85 The filter adapter is in the same area on the 2001 but is separate from the radiator hose housing. In the video above it shows the 2007 as having the radiator hose housing incorporated onto the filter housing as one piece, but on my 2002 f150 they are two parts instead. Next time use light nice effort though
i have a 2002 expedition that i just bought Thursday. it has a leak by that looks like that. would i be able to get away with just changing the gasket.
You may be able to change just the gasket depending what the surface of the housing looks like.
Ill take it off after work today and see what it looks like. Hope i can get it done. Just spent pretty much everything i had on picking up the truck so not much money left right now for maintenance. And its not drivable with it leaking the way it its. It come out too fast.
i took it apart today after work. Its so tedious to work on. Only 4 bolts but hard as hell to reach. And i got like no tools. But got it back in. Ran out of day light going to try and finish up after work tommorow hope it doesnt leak anymore.
Yes it is very tight to get to the bolts.Keep me posted.
Omg it worked. No more leak. 2 days it took me to put it together but hell i got it. I was wonder about refilling the radiator. I put like 2 1/2 gallons back in but how much does it take and will it get air trapped in the syatem
is this leak from a more serious problem?
no the leak was from the gasket between the engine and the housing
is the gasket the same on a 2000 f150 4.6L
Sorry not sure but I would guess no.
I'm Doing the same truck as yours on sat and I will let you know but if you go under your truck it's more simple than the 07
