Great presentation. These are exactly the types of conversations that my partner and I had when we used to play tournament tennis. For returns, a lot of times the discussion will be simply to get the ball in play and make the other team earn the point. For serving, the statement "T serve" or "Out wide serve" shouldn't be interpreted to mean a pin point serve on the line. A serve that lands within 3 feet of those locations is usually very effective. I also like that this video shows that all levels of players get nervous, even if it's just a practice match. Discussing the nervousness with your partner is a great way of working thru it. The only shot that I didn't see used, and should be used especially when the net man is poaching so much, is the lob return of serve. Even if you don't win the point with the lob return, it gives the net man one more possible return to think about when he is considering a poach. Again, this video is full of great discussions between partners about what is happening and how to counter what their opponents are doing as well as taking advantage of any opponents weakness.

Kevin is really serving well here. His kicker is just killing them. I don't understand why Matt and Scott is not chipping the ball back and at least getting it into play.
Ya Kevin and I were discussing that the other day....they had a lot more trouble with his righty kicker than my lefty slice, which is a little unusual.

In retrospect Scott and I agreed, had there been a second set, we would have gone to some chip in charge and lob returns. Kevin’s ball was kicking a ton, sometimes its just being plain ole stubborn and assuming the timing will come. Thanks for watching Wally

Great stuff! Kevin is a beast! The combo of a heavy kick serve plus aggressive net play is tough to beat. Staying back works when the server can take control of the point with the forehand. If the server cannot do that, then it is a problematic approach.

My partner and I talk a lot between points like we are discussing strategy but really we are just gossiping or planning where we are going for coffee after the match.

Doubles is tennis for old people.
Ian has the perfect game for doubles of covering the angles and making the opponent win with tough shots. He has such good placement of the ball. Kevin’s serve is really hard to return and he has nice shots. I think his game is better fit for singles since he’s very quick and can use his athletic ability and big hitting more

I've watched Ian play for many years. He isn't a great singles player, but he IS a much smarter doubles player. (same as myself)
If only the difference between my singles and doubles game was "smartness". That would be WAY easier to fix 😅

Great volleys by Ian where they are placed well and they stay low. Like how Ian uses the slice return effectively. I would love to have Kevin's nasty kick serve that those guys were having problems with. I suffer from the issue that Kevin was having that a lot of overheads that should be put-away overheads somehow keep coming back.

Hi guys, talking is easy right :) I am following some HS Tennis and I see those younger players play with much crispier, better offense, and no excuses ha ha. I probably think these HS players are around 4.5 or 5.0 and you guys are around 4.0.

Haha...come on man. I run a high performance academy filled with High school players and there’s more excuses in a day than a principle hears in a year. 🤔 Honestly a well groomed Jr. should be crisper and have more offense. For one they are a lot younger and two they are still “in the machine” training as competitors. At some point as a coach we have to make a decision to take off the hat as a “player” and put on the hat of a coach. What you don’t realize are these same “big hitters” get beat consistently by players who simply think and strategize better than they do. Games in the noggin my man. 🤯 -Nate

NTRP 4.5. But it was entertaining!
Kevin is 5.0? he put 1 return on serve forehand into the net (actually into his own court) and 2 more out the court by about 15 feet in the second game, and those serves were coming to him at about 120 kmh.
Interesting, we used to play only with one player at the net. Wounder ift this would be bettr for those players as well. Also, the return player should go more often for long line, this would stop Kevins poaching attempts.
Andreas Schulz adjustments are part of every match. The hindsight’s are always valuable for the rematch. Scott and I certainly made a couple corrections but were they the right ones? Stay tuned. Thanks for watching Andreas! 🙌🏼

Great question, Aaron! If you watch professional doubles you'll see that there's usually some "stagger" between two players when they're both at the net. What you said is exactly right: one player is being the bully and getting really close to try and finish the point while the other is in a slightly more defensive position in case a lob goes up. This isn't something I usually recommend for amateur players as it can lead to confusion.....but executed well its really effective. That sharp, cross court dipper is a really tough shot....Scott is giving it to me unless I prove I can hit it (which I never did this match). -Ian

If you've ever played USTA, know your own actual computer ranking, and seen yourself on video, you'd know these are 5.0 dubs players. Ian is not an impressive technical player in terms of the way his strokes look, but he is clearly a strong dubs player who has strong volleys and lobs and hits spots more often than not. Kevin looks technically stronger but makes more mistakes. Neither look like 4.5's I've seen play who I can at least compete with....if I was on this court they'd be hitting at me every single time.

They are either super rusty or they are really 4.0 players, no matter how well they know the principles of the game. And they cannot move at all, super slow their footwork.

Kevin's serve is not that heavy. I play dubs with some 6 ft to 6 5" players and they are chipping balls at their shoulder height
otogigamer your not seeing the serve correctly my man. He hits a heavy serve, that and it combined with the “active” courts of Indian Wells and it was super tough. We’re taking the ball on the rise...hence why it’s not at our shoulders.
My goodness, if you talk strategy at a social tennis club in England you get snide comments from your opposition
I've played at 11 clubs , I keep moving from club to club hopping that I will find a club where the players are aware that doubles is a completely different game to singles eg you talk to one another for starters , you serve further out and there are patterns that you follow
Your not 2 players playing singles together and not communicating through fear of upsetting the other guy
So many arrogant players in our social tennis clubs over here , they all play doubles but all only watch singles
They guard the tram lines as there scared to get passed down the line and so can't reach any easy Poch shots at the centre of the net
I've quit playing at these clubs as I want to play high level doubles tennis but you can't play well if you don't play as a team
I'm 56 years old , started playing 10 years ago , I watched doubles players and strategy
Learnt all the grips and practised free hitting over the parks with my freind then I play matches at the clubs with people that don't even know about grip changes or simple basic positioning , most of them couldn't even see how good my ground stroke and serve techniques were
They were mostly older people that had made up their own strokes and their own strategy since the day that they began to play
Lots of them hit the ball really flat or try some ugly looking slice then you in turn hit them a nice topspin shot which lands right in their hitting zone or bounces high on them
Oh my days it's so frustrating it appears that my success and hard work and thought process have worked against me lol
