My wife, who is from India and i were detained for taking photos of the presidents house in Delhi. Its a tourist monument, so we didn't understand what the fuss was about. it was after the Mumbai attacks. India was still on high alert. This wasn't explained to us. My wife said a few things in Hindi, something like "does my boyfriend look like he's a terrorist you fools. Her intention was to show me her home and she felt like these police were ruining the image of Indian hospitality. Our driver started telling me to try calm my wife down. He new what was about to happen. They detained us to teach us a lesson basically ;). We were to be detained overnight but luckily my wife's uncles knew the station chief in Delhi. long story short after 4 hours we ended up with tea and biscuits in the station chief office. India is a cool, interesting crazy place all in one. You never know whats going to happen. one minute your like do i need to call my embassy next minute your sitting with the chief of police with tea and biscuits. and yes they tell you nothing or rubbish like ahh we just need to delete the pictures. Then you can go. wont take long yada yada. Then other stuff starts happening. and your like WTF
When locals called the police you ran and this is where everything went wrong. You should have stayed there and made them understand politely. They weren't police tho (police always wear uniforms, if they aren't wearing uniform then they are off duty) I think they were some kind of intelligence bureau(they don't need uniforms) that keeps an eye on suspicious foreigners. FYI an American was involved in 26/11 Mumbai attack. So doesn't matter if you're white. if you're suspected then you will be taken in custody. Again they can take you in custody if you're a suspect they don't need warrant for that.

After the American guy recently died by entering the north sentinel island even though its prohibited to go there, police officers are little concerned about foreigners because they don't follow rules. So don't feel that they disrespected you in any way they were just concerned about your life. Also, I doubt any travel insurance would cover any accident or injury from their activities. Had something happened it would have come a major diplomatic issue with India getting blamed for not protecting foreign citizens. Not to mention amateurs likely imitating them in India since the country is very trend based.

Had they not asked them to leave/made them leave, they would have carried on and still there was the potential for them to get hurt on Indian soil. Hopefully they learn a lesson this way.
