CarVup for Atari ST beats City Connection at its own game.

  • CarVup is a 1990 release from Core Design, a company that really made a name for itself in the UK 16-bit home computer game market before shooting to international stardom with the Tomb Raider series. It's a fun take on the format of Jaleco's City Connection, combined with the aesthetics of cartoony arcade titles such as Rod Land and Rainbow Islands.

It is often said that when it rains, it pours, and I am enjoying the deluge of Atari ST A to Z goodness. Definitely this looks like a good, 16-bit City Connection done really right. Glad you covered it as I am always amazed at what all the ST has to offer. Take care and looking forward to more videos yet to come.

As always Pete, sorry I'm late...lol. Like someone else said in the comments I remember playing a demo of this game that came with The One magazine. It's a cheerful little game there's something about the ST sound chip that I've always liked. Maybe it's because it is ideal for doing cute music. Funnily enough I have just seen a nice copy of this on Ebay at a cheap price! Maybe I should get a copy. Thanks as always Pete, now I just need to watch the next one.

There's actually a demo version available on The One coverdisk issue 26 which include 6 completely new levels.
One thing about the game music + sound fx I've always wondered is, when it happened, why in so many cases they cut the main melody when playing sound fx at the same time. Would have been much better to cut the base line / drums channel so the main melody would not lose any notes while playing the sound fx.

I'm no expert on programming the sound chip, but I would assume there's some technical reason for doing so. Perhaps it's more efficient or practical to play sounds on channel 1 or something? (That would beg the question why the music isn't composed with less important stuff on channel 1, in that case, of course!)
Or maybe just no-one really thought it through that much. This is entirely possible also, given how many devs were still sort of stumbling their way through things at this point in the games industry's history :)

I wonder if this was the same artist as in Impossamole, the fruits and enemies in particular look very familiar.

According to Atarimania, it was! Terry Lloyd. Also contributed to Rick Dangerous, Fantasy World Dizzy, Axel's Magic Hammer and a few other bits and bobs.

Did you have a bunch of content on your hard drive ready to go, or are you playing all of this over the week?
