I asked for an OTD price on a car from a local dealer using email and it took about 8 " back and forths" then me finally telling them I am not interested and will just go to another dealer. When I told them I did not want to do business with them I had an OTD within 5 minutes. I agree it is an incredibly frustrating experience.

Was at a dealer last week, looking at a used Rogue for my new driver. Found one we thought could be “the one” and told the guy I’d be back in two days with my trade in. Didn’t get my info or give me his. Another dealer called me this morning from a city about an hour away and talked me into coming to see him first with his candor, kindness, respectful attitude, and endearing quality that made it hard to say no. Plus, he could get literally any vehicle I was looking at to compare alongside the one we were coming to see. Needless to say, he earned my business today and our new driver is happy with her purchase. Little details and personality can go a long way.

Car I bought was listed at $18080. Went to the dealership and they marked the car up to $21,000 and some. Guy had his hand covering the price of the car on the paperwork he wanted me to sign. He sparked a conversation about some thing I forget what. He was hoping I was too distracted and didn’t notice the markup. I told him to move his hand and said if the car isn’t what is listed then I don’t want it. He went on to give some bullcrap excuse of other dealerships around the area having the car listed as $21000 as if that had anything to do with their website. I told him I was gonna leave then and he suddenly was able to “talk to the manager” to lower the price to what it’s listed. Cherry on top, after he lowers the price to listed price he then asks me if I’m serious about buying the car and that he didn’t want to play any games 😂

No doubt there are scam dealerships out there, but you, as the consumer, have the power to shop around. Armed with the knowledge I learned from CarEdge, I recently bought a 2024 Mazda CX-5. First dealership I went to had a little back and forth between the salesperson and the sales manager just to get the OTD price. Second dealership, I walked into the showroom, browsed the display cars for 20 minutes, and not a single salesperson asked if I needed help, so I left. Third dealership was the charm, I asked for a worksheet with the OTD price and received it right away. It was $1500 less than the first dealership's offer, and there were no crazy fees! Needless to say, I bought the car from that third dealership.

Just had a very frustrating experience where dealer advertised a Bronco for weeks at same price. I call them up and say I want to confirm this is the price and they say yes its a great deal and has to go since it's a new early 23 model that has not sold. So I ask for a written quote since verbal agreements mean nothing and they take a long time to reply. I ask what's up and they say well they forgot to include the accessories BUT they will HONOR the price. They send the written quote and its 4K more than the advertised price(basically the cost of those accessories). I tell them this and they say they will get back to me in 5 minutes. Hour later they reply it was a pricing error and they have now updated the website price. Would you believe, not only did the add the 4K for the "missing" accessories but they also jacked the price up another 5K. I called out their unethical behavior but they don't care - simply ignoring me now. Not the first time I got the price error but the others noted the "error" from the start. Just putting me off even dealing with these Ford dealers who want to keep the inflated prices when the car is not selling.

Years ago I saw a price, called to confirm because I had to rent a car to get there. Get there, can't find a car for that price, just one for $2,000 more. Ask, get told that is the car I'm looking for. I started to walk. They tried to get me to come up on my price, I told them I already had. He claimed they'd added stuff, I called b.s. since I'd called less than 2 hours before. He left to talk to the manager, finally agreed to honor their price and asked if I'd take it. I said no, but now I'd test drive it. I did end up buying it. Being there in person and being willing to walk gives you the most leverage.

Dealer said the price is $26,750 because the price reflects a $3,000 down payment or trade I told the dealer I had no interest and I wanted some transparency about how they think that marketing is misleading and I had no interest doing business. You go to Walmart, you pay what is marked on the shelf tag and what it scans for plus sales tax or if certain beverages the deposit if applicable. You go to a car dealership, the marked price on the car or in the ads are not what you pay before sales taxes and DMV fees, but before 'dealership fees', mandated and severely overpriced 'dealer added' items, etc. It makes it impossible to compare the real OTD price. Of course dealers don't want to give hard quotes over the phone, they want you in the stealership to make more money but if have a trade-in, to inspect it to give you a usually lowball amount as well as size you up, play with emotions to get you buy their add ons, arrange the financing.

You forgot one other way people buy cars. I was interested in a Toyota RAV4 on a dealership website. A chat window popped up while I was looking. And I started chatting with someone from the dealership. That person put me to the "Internet Contact" person at the dealership. You talk about a run around. Whoever it was could barely find the vehicle I could clearly see on the internet. They than did a bait and switch, because the vehicle I was looking at had strangely been sold and of course they wanted to sell me a more expensive on in a color I didn't want. I started grilling in more and more about specifics and the person said they had to leave the conversation, something had just come up. Luckily I have multiple screens so I just sat there for an hour and kept typing in hello. Anyone there? No answer. When I went to be that evening I went to look at the chat and whoever I was talking with said their computer system had gone down. I typed to the person, who I was communicating with and said who am I talking with. They never answered and I never heard from them again. They never asked for my name or any contact information. What a joke and a waste of my time.

It's not unusual to have vehicles that are similarly equipped and in the same color. I swear that when I bought my Escalade from a dealer in Bethesda I negotiated the one that had Adaptive cruise control. I made a lot of mistakes on that purchase, but anyway I ended up with the one without and they did have 2 that were almost identical one had that option the other one didn't. No Dealer advertises price with fees. It's not a sham in that regard. Their website likely has fine print that explains this. Car Edge is working diligently to dissuade consumers from purchasing anywhere other than thru their service along with warranties. What started as a consumer information site has morphed into a sales agency online brokerage.

Unless they are really sketchy they only will do work that you approved or asked for. So be very concise and careful when you talk to them. Also unless the car is not drivable you can always just take it home or to some other place. You do not have to go to a Mazda dealer for repairs unless more than one trustworthy mechanic tells you it can only be fixed at Mazda. But that is very very unlikely.
      P. S. Even if your car was still under warranty you wouldn’t have to take it to a Mazda dealer for service. Lots of service places that aren’t dealers are approved to do warranty work.

This is where you would put the ball in their court....'Say Catherine, I have 16 thousand dollar check for this year and brand of car, would you be able to sell me this car, today, for 16,000 otd.' If not, tell her to call you back as soon as they lower that price to 16k otd. 'In the meantime, Catherine, I will be checking other dealers within a 300 mile radius of who will sell me this particular type of car for 16k'.
It amazes me to no end that they will completely refuse the offer and then a couple of months later, when the car doesn't sell, the drop the price a couple of thousand, and still not call back.

Drove an hour away the next day to a dealership that the price was exactly what it said online. And I was in an out in less than 90 minutes including having traded my car to them.

Ignore cynicism for a moment and pretend you're an average zoomer wanting to by a car - she's being very nice, giving you straightforward numbers, and masking the bait and switch in polite language. Many, many people see no scam here and will follow through. They won't even think to ask how $18k became $19, 995. I bet that the Mazda will be sold at those terms within a few days at most. People just don't pay attention. I'm glad you guys point this stuff out, thank you.

Love or hate Tesla, something they really have going in their favor is the direct to consumer model. Last November lease prices were really good, so leased a Model Y for my wife. Took about 20 minutes to fill out the forms online and apply for the lease. The total down and monthly were always stated. Finished and waited a couple of days for one to come in to the local distribution center. Got a call and drove down. Took about 15 minutes, mostly for the salesperson to familiarize my wife with some of the basic features. Total time spent was less than an hour.

Worst experience ever many years ago was a big name St Louis Chevy dealer had a new Suburban listed in the Sunday paper for a pretty good price. Callled and asked if they still had it and was told yes. Drove to the other side of the county and the salesman starts trying to show me everything else but. Insisted on seeing the advertised truck I called about and finally admitted it was no longer available at that price. Monday morning they had installed a whole bunch of markup crap like running boards, pin stripes, "poly glycoat" finish protectant etc etc etc. Never intended to sell the vehicle for the advertised price. Had some pretty mean words for the sales manager for wasting my time.

These dealers are just doing some , possibly illegal stuff. I gave my son my newer 2022 car after he just graduated from college. I’ve been trying to buy a car for a few weeks now. First of all, the price they have listed is never the actual price, how is this legal? For example, one dealer , had a 2500 dollar ceramic coating applied to all of their used cars. That cost was not listed anywhere on the advertisement for the car. So what happens is that you are actually negotiating on a price that is 2500 over what they advertised. I told them that I was not paying for that “ceramic coating”. After a few days of negotiations, they then told me the car sold. Then I was contacted and was told, the car did not have a title , so I could still make an offer. Then I looked on their website and they listed the same the car again, at higher price. I gave them my price and just walked away. This is not a small dealership, but a luxury brand dealership. I have never in my life been treated with such tactics. My suggestion to anyone looking at a dealership, read the reviews, the people will let you know exactly what to expect.

Don't give up. Its a game. Always go in prepared and know what a fair/market price is for whatever your trying to buy. Also show them print outs of those deals which may be a few hundred miles away. Let them know you have zero issue driving out of state doing so. Last day of the month can also help. Like car edge says how many days that car is on lot can help. Car gurus will give you that stat. Be strong. This is the part that many will fail. But you got to be ugly. Don't be overly rude but extremely pragmatic about what your willing to do. Always try to stay in control. Always read the fine print. Get the OTD price. And don't allow them to regain control by making you wait. Either they get the numbers you want quickly or just walk out. Also know when the momentum shifts to the dealer or when you feel "they feel" like they got control over the deal then just walk out. Use common sense and your inner sense. You will always feel when the power shifts to the other side. I can't stand buying cars. I don't like being that kind of person. But you really have no choice. If your not willing to do that have these guys at car edge help you out. Lastly never drop into a dealer on a whim when your not prepared ahead of time. You will never get the edge over them if you do. In short, you got to be a bigger jerk then them. I've wiped many a smile from a sales person, finance guy, or a sales GM after I've scored a great deal. You always know when you did good. Because they look like a big black cloud is over their head.

in my experience, the have 2 prices. the lowest price is the price you have to finance from the dealer, at their rate of finance, which is usually something ludacris. most likely this does not include all the other crap the finance manager will likely add and that car will end up costing you another $4k in insane stupid fees. but that is why you have to ask. i had the same experience with a toyota dealer in Long Island car advertised $38999 only if finance and if you were trading in, they would only give you 80% of the actual KBB value of your car plus all the crazy finance manager numbers..
when I said I want to use my credit union, the price of the car changed to $44K...hilarious
of course I walked out the dealer and I told them good luck on your next victim, cause I am out the door...

The days of hiding the ball all over. When carmax was the only one with the transparent pricing strategy, dealerships could still play 3 card monte with “fees”, but with vroom and carvana and other online dealers; its stupid to keep pretending this is still a viable sales strategy.

Why wouldn't you just ask for the salesmanager? I've found most of them reasonable to deal with, and if you let them know you're in the market for a car and you know what you want (and let them know you're talking to several dealers) , they'll be upfront about the models where they'll deal and the ones they won't. Don't talk financing on the phone, talk OTD price. Give them your phone # and email so they can get back to you with a price.
I bought my last car like that two years ago and when I got the best price I drove to the dealer (I took their financing because the manufacturer was offering 1% financing), and I was out of the door in 90 minutes.

I had emailed about a used truck and the salesliar didn't answer my question about it and instead said 'Can't you imagine that nice vehicle sitting in your driveway"? That was a big red flag.
I drove there after his idiot response, went right into the lot, drove through every part of it, then went back again to double check, it was not on the lot.
Another stealership (a few years back) said they still had a vehicle on the lot that I was interested in.
I was there about an hour later and obviously the saleschump was out of the loop, because when I asked about the vehicle that I was there to see, the saleschimp said "We sold that car yesterday".

Went to dealer today for a 2020 CRV EXL 40 k miles listed at 23777 - I asked for an OTD price which was 28 K.
I said I want keys in hand at 24k they said no, didn’t negotiate and we walked out. Was disappointed car was in good shape but has recalls and ad says car will be going to auction.

I drove 12 hours to a dealership that advertises on their website the OTD price. I walked away with that exact price.

I love when they advertise vehicles they don't have! I can think of 3 examples off the top of my head from 2 Jeep dealers and 1 Ford dealer.

Phone calls into the dealer are only for the purpose of setting an appointment. She should’ve at least given a ballpark idea of a number and asked for when you can make it in.
