People forget, No Kentucky Derby winner has ever equaled Sham's 2nd place record time finish to Secretariat. Sham's losing time of 1:59 4/5 still stands as the 2nd fastest Derby ever. If Sham had run his normal Belmont He would have beaten the rest of the field by 5 maybe 10 lengths. Two great horses, Sham's name belongs up with all the greats. 2nd best to the greatest Race horse of all time. That's still pretty damned good.
Some would say he only did that because horses are competitive and he had a horse as good as secretariat to push him. No other horses had and for like secretariat
this is true he certainly was a great race horse., He tried his best every time. I think a different rider would have made him better. you cant beat a horse like Pincay did.
@Robert Montagna His jockey was was ordered to stay with Secretariat for the entire length of the Belmont. Unfortunately for Sham he was up against a God that day. Secretariat’s jockey never went to the whip once, while Sham was whipped like Hell just to stay with him for half the race. There was no way he could keep up that pace and also ended up breaking a bone in his front right leg. I’m sure that’s why he went from 10-12 lengths ahead of the pack and ultimately finished last.
Sham and Secretariat were made for each other, one without the other and those times probably wouldn't have happened, they complimented each other beautifully
Sham such a great horse was unfortunate to be racing against a super horse will always be remembered and contributed to secretariat greatness may they both R.I.P
Sham was the only horse that could even come close to the great one. I weep when I think of Sham, such a great horse, he almost died trying to compete with big red. That tells you all you need to know about his heart and love if running, if you notice in all 3 races he was the only competitor for the horse that would become the greatest horse that ever lived. Sham will always be remembered for his efforts and his love of running
Absolutely, he could’ve easily won TC that year if it weren’t for Red. Yes, we all get emotional watching Red run at Belmont but Sham showed tremendous heart until his unfortunate injury. Always felt that Pincay was too rough on Sham. He already had the will to win.
@@cherylmacvane8791 and vice versa, they were directly related after all. Like to tell myself they ran together as opposed to against each other, it’s obvious Sham motivated Red to go to another gear at Belmont, let alone Derby.

@Regina Collins I think he is by most people who know horse racing. Back in 1999 Blood-Horse Magazine put together a panel of 7 “horse racing experts” and they voted on the Top 100 U.S. race horses of the 20th century. They ended up ranking him third. Man o War was #1 and Secretariat was #2. So they ranked Sham higher than every Triple Crown Winner except for Secretariat. Man o War almost certainly would have won in 1920, but his owner chose not to enter him in the Kentucky Derby. But even still, to be ranked third behind only Man o War and Secretariat is quite an accomplishment.
Sham was so brave! Love this horse. We all know and love Secretariat. We know studies proved Secretariat had a large heart. Well, let me just say, "It took a lot of Heart and bravery to run with and next to Secretariat." Sham also had a lot of heart!
He was a beautiful horse. He would have won in a different time. But, he was racing next to a heavenly creature, Secretariat. I bet you any money, they are both up there in Heaven hanging out, racing. He was there for a purpose. God Bless them both. If you don't believe in God, just watch this.
Actually that honor would probably go to Man o War. He won the 1920 Preakness and Belmont, but his owner chose not to enter him into the Kentucky Derby.
Sham was my favorite racehorse ever. He was the only one who even tried to stay with Secretariat in the Belmont; pushed himself till he broke, literally, but never gave up. He was all heart and courage. I don't care that he didn't win; that was almost an accident, a quirk of timing. He tried, against the best there ever was, and he kept trying every single time, no matter how often he got beaten.
Man, well put. He’s my 2nd favorite behind guess who. Such a handsome horse with incredible heart, Pincay will get what’s coming to him. Fully believe he broke Shams stride in all 3 races, put Turncotte on him and it’s an easy TC.
A once in a lifetime horse that did his best against against a once in a millennium horse. Sham made the races exciting. His speed was well above most of todays winners. Most people do not know he and Secretariat were both damsired by the great Pricequillo.
I have a special place for both Secretariat and Sham in my heart. The Lord gave the world two amazing horses, two horses who were destined to compete, but one had the overall success. And the Lord planned it as such: Sham was the most important piece of the puzzle to Secretariat’s glory. Because no great comes without another great rival. Sham was that piece of the puzzle for an overall higher cause. And when the Lord called Sham back to him, he told Sham: “Well done, you have done everything you were sent to do”

There is no Jordan without Pipoen. I think Sham made Secretariat better…they pushed each other …like any true athlete. I wonder if they raced 50 times if Sham doesn’t win many of them? They were so close in 2 of the 3 races and I read that Sham hurt himself in the Belmont..discovered later…which I assume is why he dropped to last…I wonder if it was due to such a blistering pace! Sham was such an amazing Horse! I hope Sham gets a movie too some day…he could have beaten any other horse alive from what I saw.
Sham was in such a hurry to run he smashed face first into the starting gate at the Kentucky Derby and lost two teeth and that hampered him greatly in the trilogy.
Sham was indeed unlucky, but besides the obvious and much talked about reasons, how about Frank Martin deciding after a romp in the Santa Anita Derby that it was a good idea to ship him 3000 miles to New York to take on Secretariat in the Wood instead of just waiting for the Derby? 2 1/2 lengths he lost by...as much as I love Secretariat and believe he wins the triple crown regardless, Sham was a hell of a horse that might have been right there at the wire. The real shame was that he was never able to come back - had he been healthy and retained his early 3YO form, he very well could have dominated as a 4YO the way Spectacular Bid did.
Someone has probably already said this in the comments, but i just watched this. It should be noted that without Sham's challenge for the first half of the Belmont, Secretariats longstanding record would not have been taken. Secretariat would have won, he was the best, but Sham made him the all time best (there will always be debates when that claim is made).
I meant to say my good and faithful servant because we know without a doubt that sham is in heaven he doesn't have to race anymore all he has to do is be loved

Vince Lentini because they pushed Secretariat bc Sham. They couldn't afford to loose the Tripple Crown as they would be broke and in deep dept. Sham formed a threat to Secretariat going into the Belmont as he was bred for distance and excelled in it. Probably would have been more of a challenge hadn't he broken his canon bone suring the Belmont. Anyway bc of Sham they trained Secretariat harder for the Belmont.
Normally I would agree with you. But the reason I don't is because Red jumped right out in front. Red wasn't racing anybody. He was just running. Sham was trying to keep up. tried like hell. Penny said it best. he just felt like running that day.
@@davidotis5598 Yes...and you know what, Secretariat had more.He was still accelerating when they crossed the finish line. They don't know what his top speed was.But Sham you lead the rest of the pack like a boss!!! Second to Secretariat, BRAVO!!!

Very true, Sham made Secretariat legend more memorable by pushing him, (no other horse did), so would have won triple crown, but probably not in the times and distances he did, as wouldn't have had too.
"Sham spent most of his long stallion career at Spendthrift Farm, where he enjoyed a successful, but not spectacular career as a stallion, before later moving on to Walmac Farm. He sired many stakes winners, but none of his progeny would possess the great talent or the heart of their sire. It would be that great heart that eventually gave way. On the morning of April 3, 1993, Sham was found dead in his stall, felled by a heart attack. Sham was 23."

the greatest of all losers. RIP Sham.
RIP boy 2nd is still very good it is rare for a horse to come in 2nd or 1st RIP boy
R. I. P Sham
He kick out more grade stakes winner boy made great babies.
Sham was in such a hurry to run he smashed face first into the starting gate at the Kentucky Derby and lost two teeth and that hampered him greatly in the trilogy.
Woah, I didn't know that!
Twice a Prince kicked the starting gate into Sham's face at the break.
He chased Big Red two freaks
A horse nobody mentions enough as great was Damascus.
Quohavoc up You mean Sham?
Sham had greatness too. Id love to have seen a son of his bred to Ladys Secret.
3:39 pra mim a melhor imagem do mundo dessas duas lendas. Que imagem maravilhosa 🙏🙏🙏
Always at front.....suddenly the 3 white socks appears in scene [secretariat]
Big Red was sitting in the gate and said to himself. I don't feel like racing today. I think I'll just go for a good run.
This is like when usain bolt was in his peak...others were ignored eventhough they are faster...
Was Sam's speed is likely but pushed Secretariat to run faster some horses should run better with competition
If there were no sham the race would be to easy for secretariat..
Had Forego not been such a late bloomer he'd have been sitting off that wicked pace in the Belmont and the final time would have been like 2:23.2.
Yes, you are doing wonderful videos☺
Well dont worry guys. I think Nathaniel is the New Sham! He was a sire to Unable.
I agree 1000%
TRES Cool
Someone has probably already said this in the comments, but i just watched this. It should be noted that without Sham's challenge for the first half of the Belmont, Secretariats longstanding record would not have been taken. Secretariat would have won, he was the best, but Sham made him the all time best (there will always be debates when that claim is made).
He is related to my horses in Pakistan his great grand son in olatha he is also in Pakistan
I meant to say my good and faithful servant because we know without a doubt that sham is in heaven he doesn't have to race anymore all he has to do is be loved
That's really sweet
He is running! And he’s running without pain or fear or limitations . And he’s running alongside his cousin, secretariat!
El virrey Sham.
And this video is perfect!!!
Rabbit Zamindar 3 Thank you that means a lot. I hope you enjoyed the video and my channel 😁
Did u know ruffian was kind to animals even ones that were about to hurt her did u know!!!???
First = I love Secretariat( called BIG RED)
second=I love sham
Third = can anyone tell what’s the name of the song?? Please thanks 🙏
The title of the song used is in every tribute video between the {} should you be wondering if you happen to watch any other videos of mine. Although I changed the pitch due to copyright. It's by Little Mix if I remember right. Stay safe and have a wonderful day 😊
I like sham but love secretariat he’s just such a cute horse
So is sham tho
♥🐎♥
i am saying this if sham wasnt there secretariat would have never won by 31 lenghths
why
Vince Lentini because they pushed Secretariat bc Sham. They couldn't afford to loose the Tripple Crown as they would be broke and in deep dept. Sham formed a threat to Secretariat going into the Belmont as he was bred for distance and excelled in it. Probably would have been more of a challenge hadn't he broken his canon bone suring the Belmont. Anyway bc of Sham they trained Secretariat harder for the Belmont.
Harish Y
thats not true
Normally I would agree with you. But the reason I don't is because Red jumped right out in front. Red wasn't racing anybody. He was just running. Sham was trying to keep up. tried like hell. Penny said it best. he just felt like running that day.
@@davidotis5598 Yes...and you know what, Secretariat had more.He was still accelerating when they crossed the finish line. They don't know what his top speed was.But Sham you lead the rest of the pack like a boss!!! Second to Secretariat, BRAVO!!!
But ruffian is always the best queen
Sham with a good horse Secretariat may have been better but sham was a good horse I hope when they got to delete your well done my good and faithful servant
Sham was a great horse.
Poor sham.. Theres was a new sham u know Frosted and exagerator
Ali had his Frazier. This was not that so great was secretariat, but still any other Time would be Sham's time.
Plz make another sham tribute and. Frosted
Hi, I am trying to get up to speed with this channel again. As I was checking for requests I stumbled upon yours. Do you have any music preferences etc? Let me know! Have a nice day
Hello.i'll answer "300" how about that?
The violin orchestra? That could work. For Sham or Frosted or another horse?
Sham ran 13 times won FIVE....so taking out the TC races ..he ran 10 times and lost half of them.....Forego actually and Annihilate Em were every bit as good at 3 if one looks at the entire 1973 season...Sham was more precocious and was better the 1st half of that year
Sham was the second best ever only secretariat was better
if sham wasnt there secretariat wouldnt have won by 31 lengths
Very true, Sham made Secretariat legend more memorable by pushing him, (no other horse did), so would have won triple crown, but probably not in the times and distances he did, as wouldn't have had too.
Boy you are great at reading those tea leaves aren't you? hahahaha
How was Sham as a stud? He had good bloodlines. And the large heart gene.
