I was 17 years old when I got to Vietnam-1966 through 1969 ( My mom had to sign a waiver for me), I grew up fast and learned a lot, good and bad. (I am now 73 and still learning). I was stationed on the USS Providence and also stationed in Country at a place called "Monkey Mountain" close to DaNang, by the DMZ. I spent 3 tours of duty in and around Vietnam. 3 of my high school friends were killed in Vietnam, I was spared. I participated in the TET Offensive in Feb 1968, that was bad. There were many Vietnam songs back then that I just loved by CCR, this song is one of them, I still listen to them every now and then. To all Vietnam Vets out there, you are not forgotten.

While i agree that CCR is the band of the Vietnam war, it is important to note that the band was not pro war, very class conscious, and against the exploitation of our troops dying needlessly in war Vietnam didn't deserve to be part of, and our troops should have never been sent. Both sides died needlessly in an attempt for what? US imperialism. What is worse, is they didn't even accomplish the goal, as it was damn near impossible given the conditions of jungle warfare in a foreign country.
Many of our vets came home and lived in poverty, had ptsd, and became homeless. That was their reward for a sacrifice many of them didn't want to participate in, hence the damn draft which forced them.

6 uncle's and my father served in Vietnam, lost my dad and two uncles, those that survived came back changed. Two of my uncle's pretty much adopted me and I seen something they would never show others, both taught me so much camping and hunting they learned in Vietnam. Marines was my choice and no one really wanted me to go, all the drill instructor's in 78 were Vietnam vets that taught us, all said I owe my life to the ones who served in Vietnam because the 21 year's I served was by the unselfish education those vet's gave me.

I can remember as a little girl, that when my brother was drafted into the Vietnam War, my father told the Army:
"You can't have him. 2 of my boys in Vietnam is enough".
2 of my brothers were already over there and we're not even Americans. WE'RE AUSTRALIANS.
I think the USA too easily forgets the sacrifices made by its allies in the Vietnam war. Over 500 of my countrymen, died there. Many were wounded. Many more came home with what would turn out to be cancer caused by Agent Orange.
My brother came home then was taken almost immediately to the army hospital in Sydney with severe malaria. After a couple of weeks the hospital rang my mother and told her not to expect him to be coming home.
Thousands still today suffer with PTSD. Let alone the suicides.
While our soldiers were out on patrol they would be saturated by Agent Orange as it was sprayed on the jungles they were walking through. 2 years ago my brother Ian died after a long and painful battle to breathe and move, as a result of a chest cancer typical of the type caused by Agent Orange.
That war didn't just steal the lives and sanity of Americans. It stole the brothers I remembered from me. Inevitably they were different when they eventually came home, but being the youngest sister I didn't understand. As I grew up I realised more the incredible stress and fear my family lived with as a result of Vietnam. It stole my childhood.
Even now, all these years later I still flinch at the sound of helicopters on TV and in movies, and going overhead. I go straight back to the late 60s and early 70s, watching the ABC Australia News on our black and white TV and seeing men like my brothers running hard to get to rescue choppers in long battered grass.
I spent a good part of my childhood writing letters to my brothers on super-thin airmail writing pads, and making biscuits (cookies) for them, making sure I got the recipes right (Edward liked more walnuts, Ian liked more dried currants).
I remember my mother getting annoyed with me because I didn't pack the little treacle tin full of biscuits right.
She said they were too loose and they would get broken.
It wasn't until many years later I realised that it wasn't so much that she was annoyed with me, but in her mind she was seeing the little tin, wrapped over and over with thick brown paper and tied tightly with string, crashing to the ground, in some God forsaken grassy field along with mail and parcels from all the other families waiting and praying and living in fear that they would never see their brothers and sons and fathers again.
    And for what?

    • @williamsherman1942
      @williamsherman1942 Год назад +3

Ain’t war hell? And yeah you’re right, many Americans have a centralized view of history and it’s mostly due to how the American education system runs. Americans who have served know the sacrifices and acts by our allies, but casual civvies don’t understand or learned about it

I missed Vietnam by a year or 2. My oldest brother was there. He never talked much about it. I met a Vietnam vet about 10 years ago, who said he killed 5 people there. He was clearly haunted by it. I've heard America killed about 2 million people in that war. I think we racked up a lot of bad karma there. You're right: "and for what?"

I enlisted in the USMC after graduating from HS in 1973,. I wanted to go to Vietnam like my cousin who had 2 tours in Nam the last was in 1968 in a place called Khe Sanh. There he received a Silver Star on a rock pile of all places. Before Nam he was the prince of our family,. Never was the same when he came home. After serving 22 years he spent the rest of his life in the deep woods of east Texas,. On his front porch you could find him drinking whiskey and smoking pot. Once I asked what it was like,. He always answered I'm glad you didn't go,.. With tears falling from his face.

Same here. I was stationed at Redstone Arsenal for two years. I got to see Werner von Braun speak. For being from the WWII era, he seemed young. (he was in his mid-sixties) Thirty years later I drove down there in 2002 and was shocked to see nothing left of my barracks, the movie theater and the PX diner we used to frequent. I think the tornado that devastated Huntsville leveled much of it. The Quonset huts where I stayed when I took AIT were all gone too, with just their cement slabs left. I felt like a part of me was erased. One thing that was noteworthy was how thoroughly the MPs searched my car because 9/11 was the year before.

      "I'm a Lucky One"
I’m going home, my tour is done
      I’m going home, I’m a lucky one
But I left friends behind me
Who won’t come home no more
      Yes many friends remain forever
      On that bloody shore
But at night when I sleep, I know my dreams will be
About my friends I left across the sea
I’ll here verbal young men harn, laugh again out loud
We’ll all be together in a happy crowd
But then I hear the sound of bullets whining overhead
Feel the crash of morters and all my friends are dead
My friends they fought and gave their all
My friends they died for freedoms call
As my dream was ending, they’ll come and say goodbye
Though I’m sound asleep a tear I’ll cry
And they say something which fills my heart with pain
Tell them about us Sadler, don’t let us die in vain
I’m going home, my tour is done
      I’m going home, I’m a lucky one

That is the fate of military personnel who are deployed into hostile territory. I myself survived, only by the grace of God. Had witnessed incoming rockets on my first day over there in Cam Ranh Bay, and again as I was on my way out waiting for a flight from Da Nang to Chu Lai. I knew I was safe when the plane departed Cam Ranh Bay for the flight home.

Classic song and the words ring true with every verse. This video reminded me of being choppered to the bush in I Corps to a mountain top named LZ Bushwhack in July-August 1969. We had a 105mm Howitzer slung under neath the airframe. Gun Six. Intense fire missions up there and the nites got cold too. We supported M/3/7 Grunts on operations. This video gave me an intense flashback to that time. The beat and rhythm makes the nerves real happy. God Bless all of you...
