My friend's husband was taken to Fairbridge in the late 60s, told his mum died. All kids had their tonsils removed on arrival of the farm. Good clothes and shoes were removed too. He was abused, but said other than that it gave him good life skills. He later found out that they had lied, his mum was still alive and he was compensated and returned to find her. Plus the money that was supposed to have been collected and given to him when he left the farm was nonexistent.
My partners father was brought out to Australia from a orphanage and split from his brother who was left in England. Do not have a good word to say about Dr Barnado’s. They lied, hid information, did not forward letters to his brother and in fact was led to believe his brother had died. And he trusted them; it was only something like 50 years later he found out and by then it was too late as his brother has really died.
Wow in 1951 my cousins were taken from the boys home.Told their parents were dead and sent to NSW they too were separated Aged 8 & 9 y , one also stayed in england.we found his brother had died in 1989.. 60 yrs later after looking all over Australia for his little brother.so sad
Hi Stella, my grandfather arrived at Fairbridge Pinjarra in 1934, at the age of about 12 or 13, from an orphanage in Birmingham, England. I think it was called Middlemore. His mother had died when he was about 2 years old, so his father put my grandfather and most of his siblings into this orphanage, before emigrating to Canada. A few siblings ended up in Canada. I've no idea to this day, if any other siblings ended up in Australia. So sad. But I do know some of the siblings tried to trace one another, to keep in touch, as did subsequent generations of the family. Imagine the memories....
Hi Stella...I was a student at Pinjarra High School during 1961 - 62 and 63 and we had many kids from Fairbridge there. They were great mates and we had heaps of fun but I know that many of them were sad inside...I know what you mean about the strictness they had to put up with. I really hope that life has treated you and your siblings kindly since those days.
I know some police who investigated that place later, ( in the late 70's and 80's after it closed), and they said it was a "shithole" run by monsters, both male and female.
The Christian Brothers. Hmmmmm. Aleister Crowley was from the Plymouth Brethren, wasn't he? I do not think that institution has a very good track record!
Dr Barnando’s in Wales, UK was where I was molested several times!! Someone needs to investigate because I am sure I was not the only one!!
Myself and two brothers were at Northcote Farm in 1956/8 hated this place and all it stood for.
phil morry I'm sorry for your hardship.
