It's a song that describes the frustration of the average American worker who is so heart-broken about the way our leaders are destroying our beloved country. 🇺🇸
Couldn’t have said it better myself!!!
USA, USA, USA!!!! 🇺🇸
Not our “leaders”! They are supposed to be our representatives, but think of themselves as our masters…..
Well said.
What gets me is they are doing this with smiles on their faces
Yes, exactly and it keeps getting worse and the Rich men north of Richmond do not care or listen.
Rich men north of Richmond refers to the politicians in Washington, DC.
yup. the Rich Men, are north of richmond, va.
And also those rich elite who influence them.
Wall St is north of Richmond also
Richmond is 2-3 hours south of Washington, DC
The majority of the "elites" and politicians are blackmailed and forced to sleep with minors so they can be controlled. Along with Hollywood. Why do you think Paul Walker was killed for making a documentary about it all..him and many others tried to warn us all and paid a price. Its time for people to wake up and fight back!
This song is so powerful and is the an anthem to every working class person. I have 3 kids and am a stay at home mom because we can't afford child care. My husband works 2 jobs right now and we still run negative every single month. Our politicians are not for us the people, they are only looking out for their own pocketbooks, and that is on both sides. I feel this song so soo strongly that every time i hear it it makes me cry. I cannot wait for the day when we all finally come together and make our government work for us! We the people need to unite!!! ✊️✊🏻✊🏾✊🏿
I’m with you, it’s all so messed up. We just want to be free to do work that actually makes money and t have it taken out of our pockets so our kids go hungry.
If we were all smart, we’d disassociate from both parties. A malignant narcissist who wants to be the head of an authoritarian gov’t, or a man so old he’s barely coherent. Really? This is the best our country has to offer? Ugh!🤦🏽♀️
The problem is that the government has granted themselves these powers. If they were required to enforce the laws on themselves that they enforce on us, they'd repeal the laws as quickly as they could.
@@amandavalpey1521 The authoritarian government wants nothing to do with the malignant narcissist.
@@amandavalpey1521Right! And the old man made deals with China so that every family member is now a multimillionaire. Our country deserves so much better.
You two are 100% correct on your perception of that song!!! And no he was not a known musician but he is definitely known, Loved and Appreciated now!!!!! He speaks for ALL AVERAGE AMERICAN CITIZENS!!!!
If you look at a map of the US, Washington DC is directly north of Richmond, Virginia. Also, he is not a traditional artist. He did an interview where he stated that he turned down an $8 million records deal because he didn't want to be part of an industry that does nothing but controls their artists. He wrote these songs as a way to cope with his depression and being part of a working class in a country that is trying to completing get rid of you. You are absolutely right! There are so many layers to this song.
I think her has mental illness. Nobody turns down money in their right mind.
This should be the top comment
100 miles north. almost exactly
Deserves a pin!! 😉
@@investigateindiana plenty of people turn down money especially if it’s from evil people or people who go against your values. I sold my business this year and chose to sell to someone for less than a large corporation who I have never agreed with offered me. Not everyone is fueled by greed.
This guy is the real deal. He turned down an 8 million dollar record deal because he didn't want to be bought out by the "Rich people North of Richmond" as he says. Very humble down to earth guy.
He also cancelled one of his shows when he found out the organizers were charging more than the max $50 he said he wanted to charge, just so they could pocket the extra money
And he personally saw to it that everybody was reimbursed for their tickets
That show he canceled was where I live. Tried to do it at the Convention Center but it sold out too quick so he canceled that show and moved it to a baseball stadium outside of town.
@gorjlg I wanted to go but couldn't as we had family coming in that day for mom's funeral. The smokeys stadium is just a few miles from dad's house.
@@theclarksvillepiper9202 Sorry for your loss.
actually he was called out by that bar because they had to charge "X" amount because on the contract they signed with him, this artist wanted to charge them 150k just for him to show up and sing for 90 min.... including a meet and greet.
As someone who was born and raised in southern Virginia, this song speaks to the working class more than you could know 🥺
Reminds me of someone I knew who’s dad got laid off from the paper factory in Franklin, VA just months before he was due to retire. So he lost his pension. 😡 I live in Virginia Beach and there seems to be a mix of people… laborers and white collar workers.
I'm in the blue ridge mtns in va. People are waking up yall!
Swva here and this song speaks alot.
I like to listen to this with keep the wolves away.
Western Kentucky here. Our population here in the South hear ya young lady🥺
Toby Keith’s song “Courtesy of the Red White and Blue” is called “The angry American anthem” but this is the true angry American anthem
America is hurting worse than the world knows. We are so thankful for support from wonderful people like yourselves
Lots of our emotions seem to have been ruined by cynicism and irony. Maybe grief and mourning or sadness is one that we fear to feel, but it hasn't yet been ruined by irony.
meh. I have twin 19 year olds that think life is easy. Both are full time students at Mizzou while one still works 40 hour week for $18 an hour and drives a 3 year old car with leather and sunroof. She says like isn't as hard as I told her it was going to be. Her brother is in AFROTC and says the same thing, that they dont feel like they are struggling and their friends can get a job everywhere because everyone is hiring. I tried to tell them when I graduated in 84 I begged to work for $3.35 and hour and no one was hiring. My kids said poor in my time meant no one ate and poor today means not upgrading to the latest Iphone.
Only people that live here seem to notice it imo
@@zedwpdHow many bathrooms do their houses have?
I keep seeing families living in their cars and delivering food to make money.
This song reaches all souls. Government has taken over our lives. We are all suffering, starving and praying for a tomorrow that will never come. To be an American is a privilege but its also a curse because of the politicians and how we have become dollar signs and nothing more. I get chills when I hear this song. Finally someone has the guts to spell it out. He is just an ordinary man who became the voice of middle and lower class in this country. Thankfully he is writing more songs and treating the world with his voice and message.
Perfectly stated!! ✌🏼
Funny how they're investigating Trump and his net worth. Meanwhile politicians like Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and even unabashed socialist Bernie Sanders among others are all multi millionaires and no one bats an eye. Especially since none of them have ever worked in the private sector.
Government AND corporations that run the government is controlling/ruling/destroying our lives. Both sides of the government are corrupt and corporations are what are in control of them, not the people...
@@davidcopple8071 LOL, you keep telling yourself that. 4 years ago I was paying under $3 for gas, milk wasn't $5.50 a gallon, interest rates were low(I got a 2.6% rate when I bought my house), inflation was low and there were 7 million more jobs than job seekers so I don't know what you're smoking but I want a pound of it.
I want someone to tell me exactly how the U.S. government has "taken over our lives". Do you mean how local governments tell us what we should not do behind closed doors, or try to stop some people from voting because they might not vote their way, or how whole state governments try to control what a child learns, even if it is historically wrong?
Yes. This song is described as “self released “. It went viral on social media and actually hit #1 on the Billboard top 100
This song launched his career and made him widely known. And yes it became the anthem for the working class American
I can't listen to this song without crying. Especially living in a new world with an old soul. I was born in the early 80's, but I was raised by Baby Boomers. My raising was old school and to look at this "New World" hurts my heart so much. Oliver Anthony is a National Treasure and must be protected at all costs.
That's me as well. Born in 83, my parents were 38 when I was born. Growing up listening to what their world was like, and my own experiences is a total night and day difference. While in many ways, we've made some positive progress, but economically we have gone back to the dark ages.
I cry every time.
Exactly. My mom was a boomer born in 51, and I was born in 80. Whats being done to our country is not only devastating, but by design. So many people still haven’t caught on that the good old days of our parents being democrats in the union doesn’t mean the same thing anymore. And I’m just so afraid that by the time enough people catch on, it’ll be too late to turn this ship around. The song makes me weep. I couldn’t even get through your comment without welling up. America was always a beacon of hope. What hope will we have if we allow it to be destroyed? 😓🙏🏼❤️🇺🇸
You are also describing how I was raised and when. How I feel also!
💯🎯❤❤
"This guy is spicy" is not a line I thought would be said. But it makes sense.. lol. The guy just said what a LOT of us are thinking and in a convincing way
Their reaction to the Epstein reference was hilarious 😂
Is it though? Why the fuck do people get killed for telling about places... That's sad..
Mans a national treasure. Glad people all over the world can understand his message and relate. God bless you guys.
Richmond is a large city in the state of Virigina. Rich Men North of Richmond refers to the bankers and politicians that work mainly in DC and NY, both of which are north of Richmond on the map. So yes, a play on words.
Richmond is the Capitol of VA, 2 hours south of DC.
Do you read comments? Most times the explanation is in the comments.
It would be nice if you acknowledged the poster. Thanks. Love your content.
It isn't that large, but it is the capitol. Thanks for playing! He specifically means DC. Why the fuck do you mean NY? Listen to some other videos from Oliver Anthony. You're a mess.
@@fishfinder6427 Yeah but they didn't include richmond being the capitol or that its 2 hours south of DC
@@carlcarlson5553 I actually was asking the content creators. My intent wasn't to respond to the above comment. Sorry for the confusion
Im from Indiana, dad's been a coal miner for 20 years, both below and above ground. Husband works in a car factory.
I've watched all the men in my life as I've grown up break their backs, work 14 or more hours six or seven days a week. I've watched the work take its toll on my dad, with a bad back, nerve pain, fingers get crushed, and hearing fading. And I've watched as his benefits go down as the cost go up. Watched him struggle to provide the best for us kids and his heart break at the world we were left to inherit.
Now I watch my husband try his heart out to take care of me and our coming baby girl. He works his joints to the bone and rages against the government who takes 1/4 of his pay off the top. Then it's taxed over and over and over again to buy food, gas, and our bills.
Our rights and freedoms get twisted away from us more and more and the folks we thought who would try to help don't do heck. It's a song for all of us who are just trying to make a better life.
This is a beautifully written post. I appreciate the men you describe and honor the work they do. I am disgusted that our “leaders” have made it so difficult for good people like this to survive. They are ruining our money and dividing this country, thinking we won’t see what they are doing. But we do see. God bless your family and good luck.
You will own nothing and be happy is what this is all about. Nothing to do with inequality, but power for those with money over everyone else.
Heck yes. Ruin the miner but they can continue with Epstein island mining kids.
Fellow Hoosier here 👋
@n.d.m.515 It's not even about economics, it's about control. This is a spiritual war of good vs. evil. The Bible is the first conspiracy book as it describes a coming one world govt, religion and economy. Look to the book of Revelation, which was written 2 millennia ago, for a description of current events. We know that ultimately God is victorious, but we go through some very traumatic events to get there.
This song is an anthem for the logical people in the US.. I was born in 1980, grew up leaving home when the sun rose, and coming home when the street lights came on.. I can’t let my young kids play out front on their own. The world has gone crazy in all directions. I wish my boys could have the upbringing I did.. I fear what world will be left for them if the politicians and people on both sides keep destroying it the way they have been..
As an American living in Florida. This man is speaking 100% truth. Im 41yo and ive never seen this country in the shape it is. Myself and so many others are pure scared of what is happening. Im so thankful your family made it home safe! ❤
I'm a 44 yr old welder in western NY,and this struck a chord with me! we are taxed to death and our country is being stolen from us!!
Some artists you can hear when they sing but when Oliver Anthony sings you can feel it.
Cause he sang those words with his heart ❤️
THIS 👏🏼
I found your channel and love your reaction to this song. The song is a raw and heartfelt anthem for Americans right now. I am from Kentucky, grew up in North Carolina, lived in Alabama in college and reside in Georgia. His song is powerful and packed with punches. Glad you guys liked it as well.
He filmed it on his Samsung phone and uploaded it to youtube 5 months ago. Now hes a national treasure!❤
As a 39 yr old male from Kentucky that has worked in an HVAC sheet metal fab shop for the past 18 yrs, this song hits me every damn time. Worked this hard to start out $12 an hr to get where I am now and the taxes I have paid over that time. 😢
The next big Oliver Anthony song to check out is "I Want to Go Home". He also has several others. He's proving to be a prolific songwriter that the common man can relate to. The fact that he won't sell his soul for a dollar bill makes him all that more relatable.
I love that song !
YESSSSSSS I CRY EVERYTIME !! ❤❤❤
Yes! I was coming here to say the same. If they thought Rich Men North of Richmond was powerful, I wanna go home is a gut punch follow-up
And “Doggonit” is great too!
90 some Chevy another good one
The rich men are the politicians in DC (about 60 miles north of Richmond, Virginia).
This song gives voice to the average Americans who have been forgotten, if not outright ignored by the politicians. This country was founded as a result of being taken advantage of by someone thousands of miles away. Now that person is an entire system a lot closer to home. This song speaks to the tired depression so many of us feel, while getting a quarter of every dollar we make getting taxed and spent in a way well beyond wasteful, along with a lot just being given away.
A sad state of affairs, but also dangerous. When people being held down stop being sad, they start being furious
This man is Chris Lunsford. His RUclips channel is called "Oliver Anthony Music" as an homage to his grandfather of that name. He lives on some property just outside of Farmville, Virginia in a camper. This was filmed there .
The "Rich Men North of Richmond (Virginia)" are politicians in Washington DC. I am in Lynchburg, Virginia which is an hour west of Farmville.
Though some not-so-flattering truths have been brought to light about his business practices since going viral, he openly states, prior and since, that he has no clue how to manage such things. Regardless, no one can deny the impact of this performance combined with its message.
Rich men north of Richmond (Virginia) speaks to Richmond being 92 miles south of DC, among other things. So, you’re absolutely right that this song is an anthem for the divide between the political and billionaire classes and pretty much the rest of us. It’s something which is pretty much top of mind these days, which it should be to do something to solve the inequity. Thank you for sharing this. It’s important to us all!!🙏❤️🙏
New York is north of Richmond (VA), too.
@@keithr6572he’s talking about Washington DC
@@keithr6572 indeed! And it’s just as appropriate as DC is! Good point!
He went viral on the internet bc everyone could relate to it. He’s now one of the highest streamed country/bluegrass artists now
It`s not merely a song, but more an anthem. People all over the world are feeling the pinch of the global, national, & local economies .
Actually a radio station in West Virginia is the one that uploaded it. Oliver Anthony refused to sell out to a record level. He’s the real deal.
This song hit #1 on iTunes, WORLDWIDE. It's for everyone. 🇺🇸
“Sometimes it’s one in the same thing,” referring to the big companies and politicians. You nailed it.
This guy hit rock bottom about a month before this came out. Prayed to God that if he could straighten out his life, he'd follow Him. Turned down a multi-million dollar record deal to go independent. Good for him. This song is so relatable. So difficult to see what's going on in our country today.
When he refers to Richmond, he's actually talking about the politicians in Washington DC
I've watched at least 300 reactions to this song as well as every interview OA has made. What I've noticed is that lots of people fall in love with OA just from this song. But, every little bit of extra information; from his songs, interviews (he has only done 2 interviews -- Joe Rogan and Jordan Peterson), etc. -- my respect and admiration for him has only increased! Really appreciated your reaction! Keep up your great work! 🙂❤
He was offered $8 Million for a recording contract, but he refused it. He doesn't want anything to do with the 'system'. He has many other very good songs and there are vids of the whole (very large) audience at his concerts where everyone is singing his songs as loud as he is on the sound system. They're very moving.
I love how he is feeling the struggle portrayed through the song while she is feeling the Mom vibes. Ya know, like you can't say those things - someone will try to hurt you, even if it is the truth.
Brilliant!! I hadn't listened to this for a few weeks and watching it again on your reaction got me emotional. So many of us are fed up with politicians not helping the regular person. Yes, our Anthem!
STRAIGHT FROM OLIVER ANTHONY (aka Chris Lunsford):
It’s been difficult as I browse through the 50,000+ messages and emails I’ve received in the last week. The stories that have been shared paint a brutally honest picture. Suicide, addiction, unemployment, anxiety and depression, hopelessness and the list goes on.
Im sitting in such a weird place in my life right now. I never wanted to be a full time musician, much less sit at the top of the iTunes charts. Draven from RadioWv and I filmed these tunes on my land with the hope that it may hit 300k views. I still don’t quite believe what has went on since we uploaded that. It’s just strange to me.
People in the music industry give me blank stares when I brush off 8 million dollar offers. I don’t want 6 tour buses, 15 tractor trailers and a jet. I don’t want to play stadium shows, I don’t want to be in the spotlight. I wrote the music I wrote because I was suffering with mental health and depression. These songs have connected with millions of people on such a deep level because they’re being sung by someone feeling the words in the very moment they were being sung. No editing, no agent, no bullshit. Just some idiot and his guitar. The style of music that we should have never gotten away from in the first place.
So that being said, I have never taken the time to tell you who I actually am. Here’s a formal introduction:
My legal name is Christopher Anthony Lunsford. My grandfather was Oliver Anthony, and “Oliver Anthony Music” is a dedication not only to him, but 1930’s Appalachia where he was born and raised. Dirt floors, seven kids, hard times. At this point, I’ll gladly go by Oliver because everyone knows me as such. But my friends and family still call me Chris. You can decide for yourself, either is fine.
In 2010, I dropped out of high school at age 17. I have a GED from Spruce Pine, NC. I worked multiple plant jobs in Western NC, my last being at the paper mill in McDowell county. I worked 3rd shift, 6 days a week for $14.50 an hour in a living hell. In 2013, I had a bad fall at work and fractured my skull. It forced me to move back home to Virginia. Due to complications from the injury, it took me 6 months or so before I could work again.
From 2014 until just a few days ago, I’ve worked outside sales in the industrial manufacturing world. My job has taken me all over Virginia and into the Carolinas, getting to know tens of thousands of other blue collar workers on job sites and in factories. Ive spent all day, everyday, for the last 10 years hearing the same story. People are SO damn tired of being neglected, divided and manipulated.
In 2019, I paid $97,500 for the property and still owe about $60,000 on it. I am living in a 27′ camper with a tarp on the roof that I got off of craigslist for $750.
There’s nothing special about me. I’m not a good musician, I’m not a very good person. I’ve spent the last 5 years struggling with mental health and using alcohol to drown it. I am sad to see the world in the state it’s in, with everyone fighting with each other. I have spent many nights feeling hopeless, that the greatest country on Earth is quickly fading away.
That being said, I HATE the way the Internet has divided all of us. The Internet is a parasite, that infects the minds of humans and has their way with them. Hours wasted, goals forgotten, loved ones sitting in houses with each other distracted all day by technology made by the hands of other poor souls in sweat shops in a foreign land.
When is enough, enough? When are we going to fight for what is right again? MILLIONS have died protecting the liberties we have. Freedom of speech is such a precious gift. Never in world history has the world had the freedom it currently does. Don’t let them take it away from you.
Just like those once wandering in the desert, we have lost our way from God and have let false idols distract us and divide us. It’s a damn shame.
If you go to OliverAnthonyMusic.com you can learn more about him, even his self-made cellphone interviews (IT’S A PLEASURE TO MEET YOU [Part 1 & 2) speaking directly to the people, and no second guessing of what he’s all about.

As others have pointed out, "Rich men North of Richmond" refers to the politicans in DC and Northern Virginia, as most of Northern Virginia is just outer DC. Oliver Anthony is a real one, just a factory worker from Farmville VA. I grew up in that area, and theres a lot of suffering. Most people live below the poverty line. Drug abuse is everywhere. It's been getting better, but there's such little work that pays enough to support yourself, let alone a whole family. This is an anthem for all working men who understand the struggle.

You got this song 100%. This is an anthem for revolution. Rich men are our politicians, and north of Richmond is where Washington, DC, is located.
Love you guys. First time hearing. Yes he has made more since. This was the first. Literally walked out into the back yard in west Virginia with a generator and a mic and a borrowed guitar and let go. He was sooooo done. And forget America. Its a world anthem at this point.
He was struggling. And the Lord touched him. He went on his property with his buddy taping it. ❤🇺🇸
💯👍🏼 special love to our honorary American family from New Zealand Albuquerque New Mexico love🎉 We Are Family
My favorite New Zealand family. This song refers to the politicians in America and the problems they cause. Washington D.C. is north of Richmond Virginia and its those rich leaders that he is referring to. Hope you guys enjoyed your stay here in the US. Take care!
And the go into DC with a 2M and leave with 20M....
💯 I feel they need to listen to every verse I don't think they know what drown my sorrows away it refers to the drinking problem we have in America. And how a lot of working people deal with their problems
Ditto
The line about young people putting themselves six feet in the ground I think refers to the military and then being kicked around may refer to how enlisted are treated in this country especially in regards to finances for their families, benefits being denied, etc. 😢
Oliver Anthony's real name is Christopher Anthony Lunsford. He performs and releases music under the name Oliver Anthony as a memorial to his grandfather whom he had a great deal of respect for.
You said it so I dont have too - thanks. Song is refferring to politicians in DC just north of him
I love Sam's face when he here's the line about wishing politicians cared about minors and not just minors on an island somewhere.
That line makes me think he's referring to Geoffrey Epstein's island where politicians and celebrities would go to have sex with underage girls.
Miners Vs Minors.
@@ray24051I thought that was the line, too.
Not only that. Children are sex trafficked every day all over, not just on a private island. Children disappear daily, many from the foster care system, that just don’t have anyone that is missing them. They are labeled as runaways and the system just moves on. Also have you heard about all the children that have come across the border unaccompanied, or by men pretending to be their father so they get processed quicker, that have been “lost” ? They are picked up by people claiming to be their relatives and then disappear, never to return for their case date on their migrant status. The government has no idea where they are or if they are even alive and are trying to hide that fact.
@@christopherturco197 it is, virginia is a blue collar mining state, but the democrats have been putting a stop to alot of the mining and the mining towns are collapsing because for these towns like 60% of the men worked in the mines now you have 60% of the towns men suddenly without work, which means they have no money, no money means they can't go to restaurants which means restaurants shut down leaving more unemployed, unemployed can't go to theatres, or bowling alleys, or bars, etc etc etc leading to more and more businesses shutting down and you end up with a town full of people on welfare with nothing to do but drink as they watch their town collapse.
As a West Virginian Come on over! Ill even take some time off work and take my family and yours round this Wonderful and Beautiful State!

I was born and raised just a few miles away from where Oliver Anthony lives and his songs reflect the attitudes of folks in that region. He's apolitical and understands that politicians in general are the problem, not the solution. He's a working class hero.
He touched on something felt across the board. We all understand deeply what he is saying. Not just for the US, but for the people being milked for everything they're worth and being left behind. I’m 28 and live in the United States. This song is the truest thing to have ever been sang. It hits home with every single person in the WORLD.
I live in Oklahoma USA and cried when I heard it for the first time. My heart broke for him and I felt what he was singing about. We are middle class and very blessed, but these past 3 or 4 years I have watched our progress slide backward. All of my husband's hard work was devalued by our country. Oliver Anthony hit the nail on the head. We love his songs! His story is amazing be sure and look it up! I love watching your families journey thank you for making great content!
We cried down here in Wichita falls to
This song speaks volumes and 95% of the population can relate to every word. The " living in the new world, with an old soul" hit deep. Man's got an incredible voice
Heart and soul on display and speaking the truth how beautiful much respect all the best mate!
Rich men north of Richmond means the politicians in Washington DC
“I Want to Go Home” and “90 Some Chevy” are awesome, two totally different vibes. All of his songs so far have been great. Plus his interviews show he’s going to fight against being a “cog in the machine”, and we should all stand up with him!
His interview on Rogan is good too.
When he explains to Rogan how this song came to be "released"
I want to go home is so emotional.
Thank you for reacting to this song. I didn’t even know it existed. So powerful that it made me cry.
I get a little worried sometimes because something seemed to have negatively clicked in the US about 4-5 years ago and there is almost a heavy undertone that you wouldn’t even notice from the outside. The everyday American is just over it. It’s not even just a political sentiment, it’s like everything!…and then Covid made us sit and think in this discontent and we haven’t been the same.
It’s even harder to deal with when you think back three years ago when things were improving so well.
He is very articulate, and writes his own songs...this is for all the people around the world....🇺🇸💕🙏
From what I understand, he was fed up with politicians and the lot, so he grabbed his guitar, wrote the song and then immediately recorded it in his “backyard” (the forests of WV)
Not West Virginia, Farmville VIRGINIA, mostly 60 mph down St. Rt. 360, about an hour southwest of Richmond.
Also just wanted to say love yall as I would my own family 💯💯 Hope yall have a Blessed rest of the year and blessed year next year.
I don’t often watch your videos (for no specific reason) but I thoroughly enjoyed seeing you two alone it was nice seeing this side of you guys that isn’t the loving parents you guys are. Weird way of saying, I’m glad to see this video and I loved seeing you talk about adult topics like normal people. You two are great
I cry when i hear this song. .. hes canceled shows because people up the price. Hes a good dude. Hes a a person. For people..
The channel Radiowv heard this song on his you tube channel and asked him if they could air it on their channel, The rest is history. He's reached the top of every music chart you can think of, even globally. This song has had 89 million views. He's totally proven that NO ONE needs the music industry any more. Who needs them and there evil crap when we have the Internet and our own voice.
Still get chills when I hear this song!
You have it figured out, fantastic son/singer
Hello from WV! 👋 I grew up in southeastern Ohio along the Ohio River but eventually moved across to WV. I remember my grandpa having black lung from working in the coal mines, and I lost a couple of my cousins in the Upper Big Branch mine tragedy. Our mining community definitely related to this man’s songs. God bless!
That is sad to hear. I am 50. My dad's family is from a coal mining town in eastern PA. Many of my uncles and cousins got black lung.
@@rriggs6547 My granddad had black lung and asbestos in his lungs from working in the coal mine, he died in his 60s. They really don't care about miners.
That’s heartbreaking. I actually lived in WV at one point for a few years. However, I was from a small island in Canada. Largest industry when I was a kid was coal mining, called it working in “the pits”. Every day I remember sitting in school and hearing the sirens (sounded like the tornado warning sirens) because some man was just hurt or killed. I don’t remember a day where we didn’t hear it. Someone made a movie about what life was like for these miners and their loved ones- Margaret’s Museum with Helena Bonham Carter. Certainly the circumstances were not unique to the mining community I grew up in to those other mining towns. This song does such an incredible job of hitting on the emotions and experience of so many people. God bless you too-
You both are so knowledgeable about American life & culture, you definitely deserve to be honorary Americans. 😊You seem to have a better grasp of some of the ideas referenced in this song than a lot of folks in the US have. Enjoyed your reaction as always!
I’ve been watching reaction videos for quite some time. It doesn’t matter your race, your political background, and where, in the world you live, and we all can resonate with this song. And thanks for visiting the country. I hope you had a wonderful time!!
I love you guys great job on this reaction 👏 God bless you guys and your kids!
This song is amazing. And oliver Anthony (his real name is Chris. Oliver was his grandfather) is such a genuine human being. He came out of nowhere, and many companies tried to offer him millions to sign a contract. He turned it down because he doesnt want to be famous and controlled. He just wants to make music and be heard.
The line "Livin' in the new world with an old soul" is what got me hardest. I think everyone feels that traditional values and attitudes are being marginalized and everyone misses what's gradually disappearing. We barely recognize the new world and don't feel as if we even belong in it. I love how his performances are so raw and genuine. No fancy bells and whistles. Everything that makes America wonderful is being destroyed, especially by the current administration. I loved your reaction.
He is REAL Nadine- nothin held back! He speaks for so very many Americans!!!!!
Great video and great song about the struggles in America...
RadioWV travels through Appalachia states scouting local talent. They got together and recorded this on his property in Virginia, where he lives off grid with his wife and kid and dogs in a RV covered with a tarp. That may have changed with his success by now.
He was struggling with alcohol and depression and prayed to God that he would quit drinking if he could go forward with his music. Less than 30 days later this was released. He was less than 30 days sober.
In the video he put out the day before this was released he said they were hoping to get "some traffic" lol.
He always reads scripture before his shows. He did a good interview with Joe Rogan and another with Jordan Peterson.
His shows sell out within minutes. He's turned down multimillion dollar contracts.
It is an independent song that has no marketing or financial backing that reached #1 on Billboard which is a once in a lift time situation. He writes and records his own music. Won't sign a record deal because 100% he would be silenced if he did.
I’m so happy y’all did this man
Glad you caught the island reference!
It completely relates to all of us who are struggling on an everyday basis.
I've watched a zillion reactions to this song (and his others). The best reactions are when they "get it" and you guys got it. Good job.
I'm so glad that you are up on America enough to get what he is saying in this song!
There are so many reviews from people all over the world who can relate. I personally am hit so hard every time I view this. It is so raw and so true! He is a Christian and has firmly stated that he will not sell out and doesn't want a recording contract. He only want's to reach people. It is beautiful!!!
Love y’all ! y’all catch on more quickly then most of our citizens, god bless you. Y’all are spot on !!
I love in the state of Wisconsin and have family all over the Midwest in the US and I would say this resonates with all of us.
I love how this song can also resonate with people across the world. It really shows how we are all just people who are trying our best to make our piece of the world a bit better for our loved ones.
Fellow cheese head...😊😊 Love this song
You might be interested in listening to another one of his songs that really resonates with me. I Want to Go Home.
For some people, tissues are a necessity. Others just drop to their knees in prayer.

That a Gold Tone Resonator Banjos hes playing
Personally I am not a country music fan, but this guy is the real deal and his message is profound. This country and the world need more people like him. The music industry tried to buy him but they couldn't.
Like I'm not a rap fan but Tom McDonald speaks to my soul.
You still might be on brand, bfulks! This seems more of a folk song, (and in spirit of a folk protest song, a la 1960s America).
Regardless of genre, that song-the way he performs it-hard not to feel something.
He's like a country version of NF, a rapper that never says a bunch of cuts words, only truths about life with amazing insight and incredible lyrics and sound that hit home and amazes most people how it speaks better for them, then they could explain.

North of Richmond is Washington DC (politicians) and this song hits so many of us here in the US. This song brings tears to my eyes because he sings truth, and if you ever hear him speak you will see how smart and humble he is. You really need to check out I wanna go home by him. He has so many wonderful songs that are heart felt.
I heard this song like a day after it was released, still gives me chills when I hear it
True. Yes! We all relate to His songs.🙏
