So sad to hear that Karl Wallinger, AKA, World Party has passed. Behind Lennon/ McCartney and Jagger/Richards he was my favourite songwriter. His songs were super melodic and filled with love, peace, positivity and hope for the world and mankind. He will be sadly missed but has left a superb legacy of work. My favourite song is "Sunshine" from Bang!
Yeah. I feel like even when he was being downbeat, like with Ship of Fools, it was delivered in the form of a warning with hopes that people would listen and think about it and try to do better. I really can't bear the idea that he's gone.
I’ve been to over 1500 live shows in my life. The World Party show in Paradiso Amsterdam in 1990 was the one that made me feel a happiness I have never experienced again during a concert after that night. The music and the way it was presented to us in combination with how the audience responded to it was something that was was deeply felt but also so natural. That says it all for me about Karl. One of the greatest composers/musicians of all times.
Thank you for putting this together John; a lovely list and heartfelt tribute. I saw World Party three times, the first being in August 2006 at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA. Sort of a comeback tour after his long lay-off due to his brain aneurysm . Full Band with Karl in very good humour. He had explained the nature of his illness and how he'd had to relearn playing and singing from scratch. The song that had the potential to get the better of his memory was of course, the aformentioned "Who Are You" so he sang all the lyrics from multiple sheets of paper while strumming his acoustic - the effect was much love and support from the enthusiastic audience. Thinking about it now, a little bit Dylanesque with the cue-cards! I last saw him in June 2015 in Seattle with his band as a three piece but the musicianship and performance was top-notch and Karl's very python-esque humor in full-flow. I guess being the guardian of the environment he was, one comment I remember was concerning the ugly Alaskan Way Viaduct that interrupted most of the lovely views of Elliot Bay and the Puget Sound from downtown - his put-down of 20th century city planners being particularly biting. Don't worry Karl, the 21st century version heard you. The viaduct is gone, the road is buried in a tunnel and the view is clear for you now. R.I.P.
Solid list John. Goodbye Jumbo came my way by a friend who wanted me to get back to music as a whole and not just Beatles, Stones & Dylan when I was 23 in the Army. I fell for his voice, the guitar and wordplay. I called him the moment I heard he passed. I owe him and Karl my respect for the music and turning me onto it. I wished I could have caught them in concert more then the one time I did see them but marriage and kids and then his health didn’t make it possible. Like so many after that down period of his I moved on to older kids and new artists as well as the usual bands I never stop listening to like Dylan, the Stones and the Beatles and ELO and 10CC. "Egyptology" is such an amazing album from start to finish. I really love "Whole of the Night." I agree with you about "Way Down Now." There was a band on the local pub circuit called Black Water Draw that used to play this song, and they'd seamlessly merge it with "Sympathy For The Devil," and then come back out again into "Way Down Now." It's hard for me to pick a favourite, as all of his music has such meaning to me.
Love World Party, Karl's death a very unpleaasant surprise. Steve Harley too -- hopefully you'll do one on him also. So sad, big parts of our youth are dying off now :(

Glad you put Basically in there too, John. . One of my faves too. They did great b sides - Time on my Hands and Holy Water are fab too. I snuck into the afternoon soundcheck at the Oxford 02 warm up gig in 2012, before they played the Albert Hall. I met and chatted with Karl for 5 minutes. Such a lovely guy. I'm sure there are several great albums worth of unreleased music in the can - he was always noodling away in his studio. I dearly hope they get released at some point. Karl was a great songwriter, he always had something important to say. Bit like Lennon. RIP.
I had completely forgotten about these guys over the decades of life, but the moment you started talking about them it all came rushing back to the forefront of memories. I really enjoyed them and Way Down Now is a classic. I think it’s time to revisit their catalog of work.

Yes, I liked "Is It Like Today?" so much when I heard it on the radio, I went out and bought the vinyl single, which was an unusual occurence at the time. Existential Angst. Still play it. "Basically" (No.15 on the list) is the B side. Still play that too.
Something about the gentle pondering of life in *Is it Like Today?* from *Bang!* made it my own #1 song. I'm surprised not to see it on your list, but I allow that a song can resonate more or less with different people for various reasons. Either way I'm sorry we're both bereaved and it's nice to remember him and his music, at least.
Funny you mention ELO. The first time I heard “Call Me Up” from Egyptology, I thought it was Jeff Lynne! Great album. I wish I had gotten to see World Party live.
Very nice tribute for a talented musician and songwriter. I got into World Party with Goodbye Jumbo but drifted off after Bang!. After the video I have listened to Dumbing Up and have enjoyed it. First track opening line did immediately bring to mind Baby You're A Rich Man though but the album is very good. Interesting re the ELO thing and I think it's justified both in terms of his voice and songs, but not on production. I always heard a touch of both Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan in his voice. I also thought the lead singer of the New Radicals (You Get What You Give) had a similar vibe. But overall he died tragically early but left us with some wonderful songs. I was surprised that Is It Like Today? wasn't on your list but as you always say we have our own tastes.
Isn't It Like Today is pretty fine though I have overplayed it somewhat and I find some of the lyrics don't really scan or else I don't much like the line 'I really want to know about this'. I had completely overlooked Dumbing Up although I bought it at the time! wonderful album
@@johnheaton5667Well thanks for opening my ears to Dumbing Down. Around the time I found World Party I also found Jellyfish who have wonderful songs and lyrics but imploded after two perfect albums. Andy Sturmers voice has similarities to Karl Wallinger.
