- 2021 Update: Please note, I do not use this palette anymore. It was too clunky. I now have them in a storage box and pull out the colors I need when painting :)
Hello hello! It’s been a while since I’ve done a tutorial on the channel, and I recently set up a new studio palette, so I thought I’d share that with you! I was inspired by Arleesha, another RUclipsr, and recommend checking her video out after this one for some more mega-palette options!

I'm glad you all have enjoyed this video. I know there are a lot of missteps here along the way, and I have actually since deconstructed this palette and passed it off to another watercolorist due to my own shoulder issues and not being able to reach across the larger surface comfortably. If you'd to see more of my standard practice for setting up more manageable palettes, please consider my new Skillshare class! skl.sh/2J0vgv1
In Liquid Color as long as you are comfortable it doesn’t matter where the palette goes, it’s also very reassuring to know someone is using the materials in the end
Have a question how much are the watercolor tubes like your
I really love how you customized this palette to suit you! I'm so glad my video was helpful. ♥ These colors are so lovely.
Thanks so much Arleesha! How are you liking your Sennelier palette??
wow so many colours, this would be every artists dream.
I'm so appreciative of the samples that people have sent! Though similarly to my Schmincke pans, I'm scared to use up the paint for colors I don't have tubes of, haha!
Sharon Edwards
True but it feels satisfying to have the whole set of colours or just to have a bunch.
Rashone Actually around only 3! Primary colors.
@@menamelo Actually quite stresfull. It is more difficult to learn paint well when there are so many colours.
People say you can mix all those colors with three primary colors... I gotta say... show me. I for one, would love love love this! Just seeing all those colors makes me want to play with paint!
Something that works really nice for making sure your colors don't bleed into one another is to use a thin line of masking fluid on the lines of your grid. This makes a really nice white line in between each color, and it looks really nice and professional. I also use the masking fluid over the names of each color so that they are easy to read, especially on the dark colors.
I absolutely love the idea of having all those pans right at my fingertips. However, in doing so, do you think it might make an artist lazy or too dependent on convenience colors? I know for me, after building a 48 pan set, I found I stopped mixing colors like I used to, which made me miss out on, perhaps, the most fun part of the painting experience. Don't get me wrong, I'm a convenience color, more-pans-the-better junkie, but these days, I find I'm doing more with palette's that are 14 pans or under. Just curious to your thoughts. Thank you as always, Denise! :)
Hey Mark! I could definitely see that being a concern. Honestly, I would never built this palette if I hadn't had so many awesome people send me samples in half pans. I should call this my "sampler palette" :) So I bring this out specifically to try new colors and experiment with new combos, but I prefer working from a smaller palette in general of colors I'm most familiar with and those that I know well enough to mix freely. My mijello 18 well and my big porcelain studio palette get the most use for sure!
Since it isn't for travel, you could put a ceramic tile in the lid for mixing when you're painting. Easy to take out and clean when needed. Also the paint pans could be attached with velcro if you want something more secure, yet allows you to remove them or switch positions of colors as needed. Lovely project!
I've have a lot of pretty MEH experiences with black magnets when crafting in general. If you ever plan on using magnets for a travel palette, I'd recommend using the small metal disc magnets that come in packs of pairs, they're less bulky and much stronger.
You could put a piece of glass in the lid, glued in, and have a stain free surface.
genius!
Good idea, especially if you put white paper on the inside lid first, cover with glass and then "seal" the glass edges with silicone calking so water doesn't leak under the glass. You'd want to make sure to smooth out the calking with a finger you've dampned in denatured alcohol.
I use a large, very shallow cigar box. I cut a piece of very thin tin for the bottom (found it at the home supply store) on the bottom of the box under my pans. I then attached magnetic squares cut to fit each pan (from a roll bought at the craft store that has adhesive on one side).
I then used a piece of white plexiglass (remnant from some past project) to mix my paints on that I had attached to the lid and (by absolute luck) fit snugly over my pans keeping them in place and moist!
It worked great!
I use a watercolor pencil/water soluble pastel tins. They already have a metal bottom and even an already enameled lid. Just get the magnets, stick em under your pans - and you’re ready to go. The Derwent Inktense tins work very well. I especially like that the lid is seperated from the bottom where the paints are, so if I want to use another mixing tray, say a porcelain one, it unused lid doesn’t take up half my desk. The Caran Dachce Neocolor 2 tins are excellent as well. They are pretty shallow as well, so it fits perfectly, But the lid. Is connected which can be good or bad, depending on what you want.
2 small recommendations for the wood box - Instead of magnetic stripes, you can get magnetic sheet. They usually come in packs and you can choose the size you need like 4x6 or 8x10 (and according to Amazon it’s not more expensive than the magnetic tapes). Worst case you just get a larger size pack and cut it to your tins dimensions. And Ta-Da! No more fighting with the individual strips and needing super glue. It looks more neat and pretty for us neat freaks :) The second - I think using a smooth sponge for painting the inside of the lid will give a smoother result. Maybe even a simple makeup sponge? Don’t know, just a thought I had.
Thank you for all the swatch, spotlight, and palette videos! I'm using them to build my own first professional quality watercolor palette. I am FAR from a professional...having just started dabbling (and obsessively consuming all of the info I can find on the medium) a couple of weeks ago. My art style could be classified as "amateur doodling" but, I am obsessed and find the whole process, even just practicing techniques, so soothing. I'm having so much fun, too and I love all of your videos!
I was so inspired by your video, that I decided to make a similar box for my watercolors. I bought the same wooden box from Michaels, but painted and decoupaged the outside. I cut a white porcelain floor tile to insert into the bottom, and made a removable holding tray for my half pans out of white coroplast and some shelf edging from the home improvement store. the shelf edging holds the half pans in very securely. It's definitely a studio palette, not for travel, but I love having all my colors together! Thanks for sharing such a great idea.
That wounds wonderful!
I loved watching this video!
I did something very similar.
Instead of using a wooden box, I used the mijello 33 well palette (24 well is the same size) The plastic wells popped right out. The lid is a large mixing palette and there is a second mixing palette that snaps right into the lid.
Instead of the magnetic roll, I used a magnetic vent cover, which I cut to fit the inside of the bare palette. I attached REALLY strong Neo magnetics to the bottoms of each pan w/ E6000. It holds 74 FULL size pans (many more if you use half pans) of glorious Daniel Smith watercolors. (I also have one for my Mission gold as well as the complete collection of White Nights.)
Oh my gosh! That is genius!! I wish I had thought of that!
I did NOT know the wells inside a Mijello pop out! THAT'S what I need to do, because I travel with my hubby for his work, and HATE leaving any colors behind!! THANKS!!
Yes ma'am! The wells are a molded piece of plastic. So the whole thing just pops out. (Not in the 18 well nor in the one that comes with the 36 colors.)
Oh my gosh! I already have one of those and I don't care for the shape of the wells, but that's a perfect use for it! The magnetic vent cover is a perfect idea too! Thank you so much for posting your comment! I've been frustrated wanting all my colors in one place and dealing with 3 palettes. This will work for me. Yay!
Do you happen to have an Instagram or some other social media? I´d like to see photos of your modified Mijello palettes
I love that I am just now seeing this! I've been making myself a custom pallet with over 140 watercolors! I'm mixing my own colors from watercolor tubes too so ots even more custom!
I’ve done something similar just using magnetized half pans and an old Inktense metal box that I no longer needed for my Inktense pencils. I love the way you did your swatches. I will try that!
I have avoided this video as I cannot buy more paint! I think you did a wonderful job on this palette. I have found that your a very knowledgeable person and I am swayed by your expertise and enthusiasm! I have almost stopped using my mission gold paints! I am hooked on the DaVinci line of paints! I have some 30+ Dan Smith half pans I abhor. I am sure my aversion to this brand is my horrible experience with the companies customer service! I follow so many artists who just love them. I just don’t like them. You are truly inspirational and a joy to watch. Thanks again Denise, I simply cannot stop watching your videos! I did watch all of your Skillshare video classes before I opted out of that platform, You were almost reason enough to stick with them, I decided to keep paying my Patreon bill instead of taking on another expense. I encourage everyone who can to tryout your classes over there! Such quality content is not found on every platform!
So glad you're enjoying the Da Vinci, Michael! Thanks for the kind words.
Terrific idea! I would paint the box with some of the watercolors (or probably use Derwent Inktense, dry, blocks and pencils!),then wax it!
A fine sand paper would help with ridges, AND spray another couple coats of your clear, THEN gently sand that to eliminate the beading as you mix. I would sand out the Pthalo Blue stain first! By adding 2-3 more coats of clear..you will be able to buff out any other staining, at any time in the future.
LOVE how you swatched the second layer! Genius!!
Thanks Robin!
Aside from an excellent and arduous effort here, I'd like to nominate you for speed speaker of the year. The last time I heard anyone speak as quickly as you are was fifty years ago in Baltimore, Maryland. You may be exceeding the 250 words per minute but your articulation, enunciation is so clear your speed is okay. You mention Rustoleum but the can says Behr I think. The box you've made has inspired me to copy it. I think you're right about the stain on the outside. Such a well put together box deserves an exterior stain. Maybe next time. Some of the other comments here have some really good ideas I want to incorporate into my box. Thanks for doing this video.
Yes, I would NOT recommend the Behr, use the spray paint :) I bought a can later and went over it since the grooves were so deep :) Glad you found it helpful!
Steph and Adam need to get ahold of this! This is so cool! Especially Steph, she'd love all those colors
I want to make a custom palette. But I’ll use white tack (blue if I have to). Easier to remove and reconfigure. Magnets don’t have a good cost benefit ratio for me.
I feel very smart right now, I did the same thing with a really kewl cigar box! You rock!
You need to use super glue on the magnet to the pan... and even the magnet strip on the box... I've had mine setup this way for over 2 years and haven't lost one magnet yet... gorilla glue works great as well as E3.
I made a box like this for the same reason. I found an old pastel box which is shallower but longer for mine, and used tin snips to fit a tin shingle into the bottom. The magnets on my watercolor pans hold extremely well to it and it was cheap to do.
Clever! Do you mind sharing which brand you used for other viewers? :)
In Liquid Color I am not sure what brand the pastel box was, it was found empty and second hand, but I got the tin shingle from Lowe’s in the aisle with the corrugated tin roofing. It was only a couple dollars. instagram.com/p/BJnqYu6BGrj/
Is a link to a picture of it when I first made it. It’s nearly full now 😝
I don’t know if I’m too late but you could sand the paint down to make it smooth
Denise. EPIC palette. I too, like all the colors in order, very satisfying. A "Mr. Clean" eraser will clean the mixing area really well.
Hi Denise, I used a colored pencil metal tin from AC Moore. I sprayed it pink. Covered the text on the inside cover. The half pans stayed secure with just the metal dos on the pans. On the top, I decided to use the Daniel Smith Transparent Ground.
Great idea!
I really did enjoy this video and I love the idea. I am new to watercolor painting so am watching all the videos I can. I really liked watching you make your chart, somehow it was relaxing to watch. Thank you.
You could use really thin sand paper to get rid of the strokes! Also it could get rid of the shin of the white paint so it could help a little with the beading of the paint while mixing:)) Great video Denise as always!!
Thanks! I do think I'll sand and put on another couple once it stops raining here!
Blu tack works just fine for me
Great video Denise! 😁 Love the palette. One day I just might try this. I saw the original video & that it was a really cool idea. There is maybe one big thing I would change. 😉 The wax is hindering your adhesive abilities. If you choose to make another one, I highly recommend using miniwax polyurethane in matte, spray or brush on. Though even using a foam brush with the brush on will still give you some grooves it wont be like the paint brush. The spray will have to be built up with multiple coats (4-5). Oh also, if you sand the box extra smooth and then mix up a batch of a watercolor, you can stain the wood that way. If you want a darker color, try watering down some ink. 😉 Just know that any stain or watercolor will raise the grain of your wood a little bit. I don't think I would stain the inside.
For your chart you could use a couple of strips of clear packing tape under where the chart goes & then add adhesive to the back of the baggie. This should allow it to stick better or even try velcro. The wax may still end up making it a little harder though.
Thanks for all the tips Val! Perhaps I'll sand down the mixing area and apply another couple coats - but not today! Its rainstorm time! Finally!
Just cut a piece of Yupo for the lid and use it for mixing. You can clean off stains with a plain, old eraser. Works better than any paint--no beading and you can practice strokes and see the intensity, too.
This is great, special colors that has been mixed can be stored in the extra small boxes.
The extra color strip is so very helpful.
Hi There, great idea, You can buy a4 sheets of the magnetic surfaces meant for dies in the craft world which could be used. Best wishes Kim xx
this was so aesthetically pleasing to watch !
I’ve started considering this for my expanding watercolour set. I have a mix of half and full pans, and even some of the giant Kuretake Gansai Tambi pans now.
Here few minutes ago is thinking, I kinda miss your vid and decided to visit your channel and this just got uploaded. Gorgeous box. The preview of the panther - such a handsome cat.
Thanks so much Kaichi! I'm sorry for the spread between videos! I did want this one out over the weekend, but life got in the way.
I thought I actually miss alot. ^-^, I was just checking if I did. I watch some of the older one. No hurry - please take care, will wait patiently.
Idk why, after all the beautiful colors you swatched, my favorite is the deep sap green. Zomg. I love it so
That's a good one!
That palette is EPIC :O Wow!
Congrats to the winner!! :D
Thanks Eve!
I’m thinking about putting my tube paints in (clean acrylic pots)? Think Command strips on bottom & under pot would stay in place?
Using glue would then make it to hard to clean or re-use.
Trying to use things already have or can modify!
For box would first sand, use gesso & water proof paint but using magnetic tape (was very hard to manage) and came off!
Nice idea for pallet!
-drools- These palette videos are my guilty pleasure, especially when they’re lovely and big 😍😍😍. Once again Denise, your video came at a perfect time!! 😍😍😍
Thank you Bethany!
Love this idea...rubber cement as a way to adhere your pans in the box would work well and also allow them to be moved around when needed :)
I do that!
Velcro comes in strips and dots. Velcro provides a strong connection and still allows for any rearranging.
5:57 A piece of foam with slits hold brushes in place so the brushes stay in place and the bristles don't get damaged.
Thanks Silke. I personally would be worried about water/mold/just general gunk collecting between the pans if I used Velcro.
Velcro is synthetic and mould is no more a problem than any other groove, I would think. I haven't tested it. Since many watercolors can catch mould, you have to make sure to have the box well ventilated until any color is dry, so the velco dries, too. I agree however, the velcro would look awkwardly muddy colorful very quickly.
Someone already suggested a piece of glass as a mixing palette for the top half but uh...
If you had gotten a sheet of metal, you could have avoided using the less powerful magnets and just used the rare-earth ones.
Another thing would be to use magnetic spray paint from rustoleum. The base would be magnetic then and all the magnets you would need would be the rare-earth ones which are some of the stronger ones. Someone probably already suggested it, but hopefully someone else could use this kind of information.
I put tiny magnets in my pans before I fill them. Works great. FYI, if you have a paint with high iron content, the paint will not lie entirely flat.
Awesome. I bet a small square porcelain tray would fit inside the mixing area too. Something to consider when the surface wears out.
This sounds like such a great idea! I'm so inspired to make a studio palette now. I just have like 5 of those 48 pan palette tins (like the ones you had your daniel smiths in beforehand), but I ended up taking that metal holding tray out. With the tray out, I can now hold up t o 65 pans instead of 48, but whenever I paint at home I still end up taking about 2-3 of those big palettes out to paint with, so consolidating it all into one big studio palette sounds a lot better!
So glad it was helpful!
This is perfect! I need to do this as well. I didn't see it on arleebean's channel, I'll have to go check that one out too! I think a dowel at the end of the pans is a good idea too. And a big congrats to the winner!!!
A non permanent alternative to using magnets is wall hanging putty (used to hang posters on walls). I use it in palettes that aren’t metal. It holds better than magnets and will pull off cleanly. If you don’t like the brush strokes inside the lid,, you could sand them and respray. I thought there was a ceramic type of spray enamel that people use for inside tin lids for mixing (?). I’ll be doing a series on palettes soon (hopefully), already started filming. I want to look into the spray.
As far as I could find, this enamel spray (linked in my description) is the type of spray that is recommended. And yes, once our weather clears I'll be sanding and refinishing :)
You could use a large magnetic sheet, I know this video isn’t new but the magnetic sheets are big enough that one would fit perfectly on the bottom and they don’t come rolled up. I too have had lots of trouble with the magnetic tape but using a sheet would not only let you change the pans order but reconfigure the layout of the pans 🙂
I'm really looking forward to the new colour spotlight series. I've enjoyed the previous one and I cross fingers there will be some earth tones in it as I struggle with them.
The pallet looks pretty nice, I hope it'll last you as long as you need it :)
Thanks so much! I can't wait either!! The polls are closely tied in a lot of places so it'll be interesting to see which ones win!
I need a DS storage box! Love this video! Think i will put a little piece of glass in the lid
This is amazing! Really creative idea for keeping a large set of watercolors.
Electrical tape sticks well to wood :) you can get all different kinds of colors at home depot
If you ever want to stain, you can also use watercolor and stain it with that, then add wax. You'll also want to sand before applying enamel to the inside of the lid, and between a couple of the coats.
This is a great dyi palette Denice and you still have room for more paints ! 💞💫
Plenty of room!
So many pretty colors! You’re definitely much further along in your journey towards curing that pesky WSS - DS (Whole Set Syndrome - Daniel Smith). It’s such a terrible thing (on the pocketbook 😂). I love the idea and may have to do this in the future. I have 49 colors, so I’m safe at the moment, though that urge to get more colors is will need to be satisfied before too much longer, LOL. I noticed you seemed to be counting to find a particular color that was located near the middle of the row. If that becomes a bit of a nuisance in the future, it might help to move the magnet strip on the wall. If stood vertically between the 6th and 7th pans, it can create a break. You could draw a slightly thicker black line on the swatch card as well. One thought regarding the magnet strip not sticking very well. I would have thought those would be able to hold the pans easily, so I’m wondering about the location of the poles. If you decide you want stronger holding power that covers the bottom more completely, you might want to try bent covers. If I recall correctly, they are thicker or stronger than the 8x10 magnetic sheets. An added bonus is, they don’t have adhesive, so you can test both sides to see which one is better for the pole orientation of the pan magnets. Hopefully that makes sense. I do know it’s always best to test for optimal attraction when working with magnets.
Thanks again for another awesome video!
Thanks Heather! I think I may have been just trying to locate colors and do swaps and such, and at one point I was just literally counting how many pans there were :) They're only 12 across so I think that I should be able to get it down pretty closely once I start working with the palette more. Plus, I'll only ever use a few for each painting so shouldn't be too bad :) And yes the polarity is a problem. Many have suggested metal sheets. If it's problematic I'll give it a try, but it should be fine since I don't plan to take it out of the house.
Have you thought about lining the bottom with steel sheet for the magnets to attach to instead?
may put a large set together next year so will keep this in mind
Beautiful video. I love your channel. I am trying to organize my all my pallets now.
Mmmm, yes, give me them sweet sweet palette builds. =>..
Thank you as always Kat!
I really like the way you did your swatches, the second layer is a great idea to give idea of colour, but also gives the card a bit of a 3D look lol.. you have some gorgeous paints and colours there, makes this noob quite envious! 😁 thanks also for saying about the magnetic strip, I was just about to buy some to secure the pans in my (teeny tiny) set after reading it was a good plan, but I will go with adhesive dots instead 🙃
Other have suggested using metal on the bottom too which would help the magnets stick if that's something you're interested in.
Great concept and thank you for sharing it! As the box is meant for lightweight craft things, and usually more decorative than functional, I suggest reinforcing or adding hinges to it. The wood is a very light weight wood, not a dense or heavy wood, and very shallow, so the screws don't have much to grab onto, and with frequent use and especially water, the screws will easily pull away.
Before sealing and painting...loosen or remove the hinges and squirt on several drops of Locktite or Gorilla glue, then tighten them again and really let it cure/dry before painting or sealing. Or, pick up something heftier from a hardware store. Otherwise, in spite of the magnets, you may find yourself on hands and knees picking up pans and brushes.
Thank you again for sharing your time and talents!
Thanks for sharing Anita!
if you need stronger magnetic properties, I advise using small neodymium magnets and a thin metal sheet. Those magnets are insanely strong and i think you can get them even in 1mm thickness... also double sided tape with foam
Love it! What a beautiful studio palette. May I ask, how did you decide on the order of the colours?
Thanks Oto! I always do a similar order, starting with yellows and going to brown. I did end up putting my darks after blues instead of at the end with the browns because of the indigo and payne's blue grey. Normally they'd be at the end. All of the Primateks are sorted out at the end as well. If you look closely at the chart at the end there is a black sharpie line separating them :)
you can buy magnetic sheets at the craft store, that might work better for you...or someone else trying this.
Humongous! :D glad I have my to go 16 colors that fit into two little palettes :D but very nice idea, without a doubt :)
As for the staining, it's possible to nicely remove with plain old plastic eraser. Works great on both enamel and plastic flawlessly without scratching the surface :)
And when it comes to tape, either double sided or good old ducktape works wonders on most surfaces :) not very aesthetic though :)
Awesome, thank you for the tip! And yes, this made me very appreciative of my smaller palettes!
In Liquid Color anytime ^.^
One more idea for "taping" albeit it drifts into "gluing" universe... A bit brutal way, but hot glue gun works wonders too :)
Looks great. It's so clever to create the mixing space in the lid! :)
Thanks Lana!
This palette is awesome! I would have used magnetic sheet though. For travel you could place a transparency and foam on top. This would only work if the pans are dry of course. :-)
I use Aleene’s Instant Tacky (reusable craft putty) for sticking down my pans. It’s kind of the best of both worlds because it sticks really well and holds the pans in place securely but I can also still move the pans around if I need/want to. I got mine at Joanne Fabrics and Crafts but they probably have it at Michaels too. There are other brands that I’m sure work just as well but I haven’t tried them so cannot recommend any other.
Have you seen the Ranger gel plate storage tin box? I’m not sure if it’s deep enough for the half pans. Maybe that of worked better (less work?).
You could put a thin sheet of metal in the bottom and magnets on the pans.
This is great! You can try two-sided tape for your top envelope. 😊
Love your channel. Thank you for sll the good tips and tricks... info. So helpful.
This is like my dream palette. :D Also, would velcro work better than magnets?
Great palette. And its contents. Am currently awaiting a few DS which will join my Kremer landscapes and other lovelies from Kremer. They will be my first, so eagerly anticipated. Do you have a recommendation for green-gold? I am a bit torn, but am looking for something lively and glowing. The DS version looks lovely but so do some others. Do you have a preference?
If you wanted something more permanent than ordinary tape then you could use copper tape and just adhere it to the sides with glue. A couple of straps of copper would allow you to slip your colour chart under and look really good. You could also use some tiny tacks to fix it, and over time it would get a nice aged patina. If you are worried about toxicity it can be varnished. It can also be annealed by holding over a flame which will yield some interesting color effects.
I hope you have a great time with the new paints! I don't use PY129 often if that's the color you're asking about, so I can't say just yet (though it *might* be a color in the new Color Spotlight series depending on how the votes go). Steve Mitchell loves MGraham's Azo Green, and Daniel Smith's RIch Green Gold is nice as well. Daniel Smiths "Green Gold" is a mix of three colors and is a light, bright green. It's nice for landscapes but definitely not the same color.
I cover my swatch cards with cold wax front and back then I can keep it in with the paint
Use sand paper to sand down the paint grooves, and reseal.
I bought a magnet sheet, cut it to my box's measurements and it worked perfectly.
Congrats Legoduckie (spelling?! :D) Enjoy your gorgeous watercolor set
Wowzer that’s a lot of paints. If you can manage it sure, but for me I get overwhelmed with 24 colors tbh
You're so lucky. I wish i could afford all those. Beautiful set.
Next time you make one of these, consider placing, a very thin sheet of glass over the white enamel paint.
How do you put your colors in order so nicely?
Loved watching this!!!! I've really been enjoying your channel, so thanks for the entertainment! Could you possibly do a video on mixing skin tones?
Thanks Emily! I'm no expert in portraits so I'm not sure that I'd be a great reference in that area, but Arleesha of arleebean is a wonderful portraiture artists and I'm sure she has recommendations!
Most cigar stores sell empty cigar boxes for a couple bucks. A shallow cigar box could be good. And decoupaging it could be fun.
A more indepth/labourous way of getting them in place: making pegs to attach to the bottom of the pans.
Not exactly sure how to go about it, but it's an idea
This is truly awesome!! I hope I can do this someday. I just have to save up money, and then look out world! Lol.
CONGRATZ TO THE WINNER!! LOVE the new mega palette...you're so blessed. I do love your video's, very inciteful and informative! I love your teaching style and I learn so much from you. Hugz, Tree
PS: Do you have a video on a complete transparent palette setup? I've been searching but didn't find one. Thanks so much!!
The Stoned Videogame Nerd Thanks for the info! Hugz, Tree
Sorry I missed the question earlier. Oto Kana has a great transparent palette setup video!
In Liquid Color Thanks, I'll check her out! Hugz, Tree
This is such a cool idea. 💜
Your awesome hope you keep watercoloring💖
Not planning on stopping anytime soon! Thank you :)
Next time you make a palette maybe try using blue tac to stick the pans down. Maybe you could use that to stick the color swatch sheet as well.
You could place an clear acrylic plate over the White mixing aerea. ;)
Are all of the paints in the pans Daniel Smith watercolors? Did you get them individually? Or did they come in sets?😊
Hi. Quick question can you store liquid watercolor in a silicone palette?
I would have used foam board to raise the paints for easier access.maybe even 2 layers and use tack to hold pans in place.
Good idea!
I like the idea
This is an awesome idea but why not just put flashing in the bottom the your magnets will stick where you want them. 😁
Great idea Denise!
Congrats Legoducky!
This would definitely have been a good situation to do a swatch with individual, movable swatch squares.
I feel like those would have the potential to get lost! Haha
I think another way of doing this would be putting a sheet of magnet instead of trips so the dots stick better, ooor put a fine sheet of metal and then use little magnets to stick the pans. Either way this was really great, it must be really heavy once it's full
By the way, I used empty half pans to put really bad watercolors in them( a 12 tube set that was 2 bucks and that doesn't have pigmentation at all) and now I want to put better watercolors in them because I don't have more space for them, what is the best way to empty/clean pans?
Indeed! It really depends on the paints, Some brands remove easily, while others seem to form a bond likes cement. If you can separate the paint with a palette knife, I'd say go with that. You can try soaking them to reconstitute the whole paint, or if all else fails, I'd recycle or donate them and start over.
Thank you! I'll try all of them to see what it goes better
This is really late, but dollar tree sells decorative metal plates (the ones with etching in it) that magnets stick to. It's relatively thin, and can be cut easily with tin snips.
