A lot of people are complaining, but I don't get it... I've played Bach on classical guitar for years, and heard hundreds of of interpretations. I like this interpretation. Sure, the sound is dry, but I like that, too. This is another example of how Bach is wonderful when played in many myriad ways, whether it be the acoustics, with more (or less) staccato, etc., etc., etc...
The right hand plucking amazes me. To know exactly what finger to use. Amazing. Plectrum guitar would be much easier. These classical guitarists are amazingly skillful and genuinely talented.
A supernaturally outstanding performance. I particularly liked the Andante and was 'blown away' by the energy expressed in the Allegro - it was just fantastic, thanks
Smallman, low rh position, clean articulation, Perroy as teacher, I think I've seen this before. That said, I saw him live when he won the GFA and it was damn impresive, I mean who the heck plays the Bach C major Fugue in a major competition final?
Erik fp "The actual first publication was in 1802 by Nikolaus Simrock in Bonn. It is clear from errors in it that it was not made with reference to Bach's own manuscript, and it has many mistakes that were frequently repeated in later editions of the 19th century." Taken from Wikipedia.
just add reverb yourself using your DAW and get over it? I like not always hearing NAXOS style reverb. My CD uses a blend of dry and verb from the room which was slightly more than this recording and a great plugin sampled from FEDEX building in Berlin (truly awesome plugin). I wish I owned the plugin myself so I could always use it on everything.
+Brian Cullen: Fair point. But all that was needed was to record with a mic placed a little distance away and have a few walls around, not egg boxes or sound deadening material. This is a brutally dry ambience. Almost masochistically dry. Agree Naxos reverb is often swimming in it. There is a middle way. But more importantly, Bach always has a pulse, however slow. I don't hear much pulse. I hear a selection of isolated phrases making the architecture of the piece cut into slices. The second movement is much better because he is forced to a pulse, but zero change in tone.
+fingerhorn4 "masochistically dry" - nice comment, yeah it is. But I enjoy the difference. Fair comment also on the pulse, many young generation player (not) forget the musicality found in keeping and manipulating the pulse to an appropriate manner of taste. Some just seem to neglect it.
Saludos¡
Merlin, I see your point. However, the MIDI like sound is more related to the recording equipment settings than the sound that Gabriel produces. I know because I used to have the same issue during live or recorded performances (I used to be a concert player). Often, too much reverb is added and that ruins the music (harmonics are killed, vibratos are distorted, etc.). I have heard Gabriel on a small room and his sound is wonderful.
Gabriel has such an amazing precision. Bravo!

Impresionante!!!!!
Stunningly beautiful.

Wow -- that was OUTSTANDING!!!

Great rendition with amazing precision..
I liked a lot his interpretation, keep the nice guitar playing
BRAVISSIMO!
Bravissimo. Complimenti
Bravo

his hands are barely moving, outstanding technique!
score?
Well played... just didn't like the sound quality of the recording, his guitar sounds much better than this recording.
100% agree - dead sound - probably poor mic'ng (or cheap mics)
3:54 Fuga
Thanks yongTTak
weren't the sonatas published in the 18th century?

Emanuel Estrada Yarce oh nice! i thought everything was published whilst Bach lived.
who ever record or mix it - killed it
sounds miserably , i have the DVD at home not much better sound
classical guitar like reverb!!!

I love the dryness and exact playing of this song.
You should listen to Thibaut Garcia playing bach.
my brain is exploiting

No use of ring finger in the right hand!!!
well that's just simply not true
There´s no feel of rythm whatsoever. A completely inaccurate and unloved performance.
Almost like any midi synthesizer
merlindavids How do you define rythm exactly then and inaccurate compared to what? (not to argue, I'm just interested in your point).
+merlindavids Are you jealous, or just dumb?
@TNToons: merlindavids must be both jealous and dumb.

Que camarógrafo tan bestia
