I read that Mazda will alter the gearbox and suspension for the CX 60 mid cycle so expect those changes to flow through. Is the CX 80 just a narrower CX 90? Certainly covering al the bases.
Pretty much. Yep, the changes that are going to be made to CX-60 are important. But as it stands the CX-80 is based on the improved version of the CX-60 that came out earlier this year. I’ve got a review on it in the pipeline too. And it could essentially be considered a narrower CX-90. But there’s a bit more to it than that.
We test drove one of these and a CX60 last week. We have a cx8 from 2022 with 85k on the clock. We’re going with the cx60 both cars are great though. We don’t need the third row anymore. Mazdas are great quality cars, just avoid the diesel ones.
I don’t know if Mazda more premium, lower volume strategy is going to work … thought their previous line up was pretty good, just needed an update and more efficient power train, hybrid, phev and so on … we will just need to see
Not that many 7 seater PHEVs in the market. if you are considering to get onto the FBT exemption before 2025 April, this is a good pick compared to others. Noting this PHEV includes a 2.5L engine vs 1.6L in competitors like kia/hyundai.
@@therightcarwe are looking for a 7seat PHEV to get into the FBT exemption before April 2025 , Current option are either CX80PHEv or Kia Sorento PHEV . Are there any more 7 seat PHEVs coming to the market before then ?
I'm actually impressed to see even the Azami PHEV appears to be under the luxury car tax, however I'm happy with my choice of the Sorento PHEV. I know it drives well, it looks much better to me, and even though the engine is quite a bit smaller, having a turbo engine will likely give more torque from lower rpms than the na engine in the CX80 PHEV.
as a 23" CX-8 owner, the 80 while an upgrade is not that much better in terms of space and interior and while you get powerful engines, you also get a more clunky performance for now (surely fixed in the next few years), the CX-8 is smooth as butter with its 12 yo engine and trans my potential new car in 5+ years....
The squishy door armrest deforms after your elbow rests on it for a long time, long drive for example. The foam seems a bit poor quality, at least in the cx-60
@@therightcar Also not sure if you noticed but the rear seat backrest seems a bit loose. I know it is a split seat but it just feels like it moves too much compared to other cars which this is competing with such as XC40/60, X3, etc. This was visible when you opened the armrest in the 2nd row
Curious why so many trims for Australia? Does anyone really need a Pure trim with Manual Seats? Considering that this is premium above a CX60, I think the 20 inch wheels should be standard. Here in the Philippines, we only have two variants of CX60 and CX90 for instance (and that imho is sufficient)
It looked great till no spare wheel, 3rd row ventilation near the legs and no fan control. The KIA Sorento has no transmission tunnel stockings out in the 2nd row, so how come this has one especially being a taller car. They seem to be a wanna be BMW but I guess it will take them a few more years to iron out the issues as these cars are fairly new.
Hi @the right car! Great channel and I enjoy your reviews. Random question, do you know if there is going to be any power Nissan Pathfinder in 2025 and are we getting that any time soon in down under? recently drove the power X-Trail and really enjoyed the Hybrid aspects, just looking for a 7 seater Hynrid! or would you even recommend the new Santa-Fe or Sorento o the Nissan? I think there is a new facelift Palisade around the corner as well! so many choices.
100% in the same position. Love how the X-Trail drives but looking for the next size up. We’ve driven the CX-80 and Santa Fe and they both seem really nice, Mazda was maybe a little more refined feeling. So much choice but also so little!
thanks mate, how did you find the Mazda and Santafe compared to the X-trail which drives like an EV! I mean the drive and acceleration for me was so good I could not believe it when I sat back in my C-X5 after that! I dont think the 6 cylinder mazda will be as swift, and I'm not sure about the Hyundai, also the new rumoured Palisade with 3 seats in the 3rd row should be interesting ... I guess all I need ride now is an equivalent to a 7 seat X-trail!
@ we drove the CX-80 PHEV which was more similar to the X-Trail as it has like 60kms of full EV mode. The Santa Fe felt more similar to a normal ICE car to me when you get going… but it’s $10k more than the Santa Fe for the same tech, which is already $10k more than the X-Trail. So hard!
I find the Mazda line up and pricing to be really confusing, the models, design language (hints of BMW X3 from the side at 5m.47sec) and features seem to blur into a puddle of pricing contradictions. Mazda used to have a great market philosophy in the Zoom Zoom era of marketing. It was simple, easily recognisable and linked to clear pricing strategies.
At 70-80k you've got a million options. Mazda is no longer cheap to maintain. A 5 year warranty is mediocre. A janky gearbox and drive. Honestly I'm bored of the bloated SUV. As a family man Kia basically has my next purchase locked with the Carnival.
New engines and in house developed transmission (dsg?) this should be the biggest concerns about this vehicle...Mazda has already slipped in the reliability reputation with the previous gen diesel engines.
I start off stating I have Mazda sedan and am looking for a SUV. The design is (to me) generic and styling may be graceful but certainly nothing else. No spare (I am moving to the country area) so this would be a deal breaker. With what I have viewed there has been a fair bit of criticism on the new style transmission. I think that overall I would have to look elsewhere.

True, just in the name of reliability, they are charging so much for their cars, and what we get are old, boring specs. So I am not a Mazda, Toyota, or Honda fan for this reason.
It's disgusting what features Mazda has locked behind model versions. Touchscreen control in AA/CP particularly, and vented seats in only the $90,000+ models. Who would pay $80k for a "quasi-luxury" car these days and accept non-ventilated seats? But praise for using mechanical HVAC controls.

But Mazda offers greater long-term reliability compared to Kia. So, spending $70-80,000 on a Kia would be risky.

The Hyundai Sante Fe as an alternative is ugly to look at. Plus I thought the Skoda Kodiaq PHEV didn't come in 7 seats?
