Just shows the great respect Nehru ji garnered from the world leaders. Despite being closer to the USSR, Nehru ji was not given a cold shoulder by America, but rather a warm welcome. He was a good leader and a spokesman. People should study such old leaders well before criticizing them. We should be more practical and humanly, while judging them. We expect too much from a leader and want him to be 100 percent right all the time. Nehru ji did best what he could, given the global circumstances, money that India had, and its global standing. That period was totally different. Now India is a world power and can dictate things, but that era was quite different.

By the way last two years of Patel life were kind of bed ridden due to sickness and passed away December 1950, both Nehru and Patel lived for 74 and 75 years and both have heart attacks. BJP is using Patel legacy not because he was a freedom fighter like many many others but because he had some thought differences with Nehru and more over he was Gujarati.

@@rameshmedep7385 Non-alignment was the call of the hour at the time. If India had aligned with the USSR, it would have been an orphan anyway after 1991, when USSR disintegrated. And if it had aligned with the USA, India would have to make many sacrifices. Think about that: US armed forced would have their bases in the country, probably permanently, and would have full knowledge and possible interference in the defense matters. This was bound to happen as India was very weak economically and didn't have much bargaining power. Even socialism was the call of the hour, because one of its achievements was to weaken the Zamindar system, and also to uplift the economically and socially weak classes.
