A happy ending to a tragic story. Two wonderful gorillas came out of the perfect move for our beloved mama gorilla Genki. Thank you beautiful lady for giving us Gentaro and Kintaro. We love you Mama.
Thank you for this story of Genki’s past. It is interesting that gorillas show the same reactions to loneliness, rejection and loss that humans can have: depression, weight loss, bulimia and self-harm. It's such a blessing that Genki now has two fine sons from Momotaro, carrying on Biju’s genes.
It was a very correct and gentle solution (finally Momotaro had become wonderful Genki's partner at Kyoto). Japanese people have (professional) humility and I se every time, really love these gorillas, their animals... Thanks for all the videos throughout the year! Happy New Year!

Momo had no father. Yet he has evolved into a protective and loving father and mate because that’s what silverbacks do. He adores his boys and that has enabled him to be a good and LOVING father! It has given his life in a zoo meaning! God bless this family! ❤️🦍❤️

Thank you for the story, GorillaMan.I now have even more insight into what Genki went thru.i didn't know that she was with Biju when he died.Trauma.Koko, the gorilla who knew sign language had a male friend brought in.he also knew ASL.He recounted the time when his mother was killed by poachers in the jungle.He signed how she was murdered and signed tears and sadness.They can remember.I see more clearly about my special girl.I will defend her and protect her from all the haters out there!They just lack the ability to have compassion in their hearts.I love Genki and I understand how trauma changes us...humans& animals.Thank you GorillaMan for a year of compassionate videos& reporting on this family.You ROCK!!!!!Love you.Happy New Year!🎉🎉🎉❤😊
I'm late coming into this convo but I wanted to add that Genki lost her mother to a silverback attack. Not much history or lineages on her side of the family. That makes me love Genki more. She came from humble beginnings.

I've always thought Genki was a very kind gorilla. Momoko is a dominant female and a bit of a bully. Momoko is better with her own family minus many females. Toto is very non threatening to Momoko. I think Momoko was jealous of Biju's affection for the pretty, kind Genki. I've always liked Genki more 😉.

What a sad story. Poor Biju, his life should have been so much longer. How sad for Genki. Really hated to hear how the environment was affecting her. And then feeling sorry for the poor little gorilla who never knew his father. That makes one feel for Momotaro. He was robbed of having a real family. Sad all the way around. I hope Genki is happy now. She has a beautiful family, and is an absolutely amazing mother. Love her so much .. she's a beautiful beautiful creature. I feel privileged being able to learn about her. Momotaro a été imposé à genki ,il me semble dans un parc bien fermé, où ils ne pouvaient pas sortir ,Momotaro à voulu compter fleurette à genki ,qui n'était pas très disposée, à se laisser faire par lui ,elle l'a griffé et mordu, et Momotaro est allé taper plusieurs fois sur la porte pour sortir, car genki était mal disposée envers lui ,et se défendait bec et ongles, le reste de cette vidéo 📼, à été coupé et je ne sais pas si ils ont finis par s'entendre à ce moment là, ! I knew part of of Genkis story, but I didn’t know she stayed with Biju till he passed. She truly cared for him and so glad she is now with his son, Momotaro. Genki is a sweetheart, yeah she has her quirks, but she loves her man and her babies in her own way. She’s been through a lot and this makes you appreciate her that much more. Yes indeed Genki has produced very intelligent strong and caring sons. They both love her very much I’m sure. And it’s not evident all the time but I’m sure Momo loves Genki and Genki the same to Momo!

Personally I think now that she has her boys she’s settled into an almost content and comfortable life with Mo because he’s not chasing her around to mate (because he’s not really sure what he’s donning bless him) she appears ok with that, a very sad story however had these events not happened we wouldn’t have her boys, so there is a sliver lining there. I remember you saying that they showed Genki videos of other gorillas, and the main one she showed an interest in, even on video, was Momo. I wonder if it's possible that he genetically inherited something from Biju that reminded her of him?

Hi Nina - Silverback Gon lived at Kyoto until his death in 2009. He and Genki mated but had no offspring. Silverback Kenta lived at Kyoto until 2004, I do not know if he and Genki mated but it seems possible. There was also a female gorilla named Yasuko who lived at Kyoto until May of 2003. So even after her mother, Hiromi, died in 2008, Genki was not completely alone. Happy New Year and happy gorilla watching in 2024!

If Genki could only understand that Momotaro is the only bloodline of Biji and is now Genki’s mate/husband. That’s fate no doubt. I’d just like to say that it’s difficult to compare a financially strapped zoo like Kyoto with the San Diego zoo, arguably one of the top zoos in the world. The financial resources are incomparable. It is my understanding that the separate space being developed for Gentaro, and possibly Kinny is an attempt to create a “batchelor” situation within the constraints of the zoo. I know there has been consultation with other zoos. As mentioned by others, there are quite limited mating opportunities in Japan… so far. Perhaps more collaboration with European, and even American zoos is something we can all look forward to in future.

Genki's mother died & she was wild born. I've been trying to find out which silverback injured her severely. Genki's father didn't have much history either. Beautiful Genki came from humble beginnings. Don't forget that Biju's father Sired 27 offspring. Very impressive!
Her grief was caused by humans and their decisions. Maybe the story of what human's did to Momoko and Momotaro when he was 2 years old, that was just horrible. Separating mother and son so they could breed her with another silverback which failed. Momotaro would scream for his mother and she was stressed.
Exactly. Everyone focuses on what genki went through and say , poor genki. But nobody talks about what momo went through. At least genki was able to go back to her mother. Momo has been on his own since he was 6 1/2.

Mega tsunami. Even in Kyoto, the quake shaking has been affecting us. Anyway I am supposed to visit the zoo tomorrow. It is no problem coz I ride a bicycle.
The way I look at it Genki still has problems,its great she has Kintaro, which makes it better, but Momentaro wasn't attracted to her, just when she was in heat, and ran from her and hit her, she got tired of chasing him, now he is more mature and comes to her rarely and she doesn't want nothing to do with him,he made her that way,she tired of it sometimes and trys to stay out of his way, when he greets her she leaves,she really has never had a love, and still dont, and she hadn't paid attention to Gentaro since he was 7 years old and now he don't want anything to do with her,but at least she has Kintaro.Its sad but the truth,I don't sugar coat, what I don't see,I do think that Momentaro has finally got love for Genki, but doesn't know how to show her, and she doesn't care anymore.
Yes she did. And without a masculine figure in his life, he never learned how to copulate, and Genki had to do all the work to have their 2 beautiful sons.

Kintro fights just like his mom does 😂😂 when you watch them their arms and actions are the same , just like she does mono too, Kintro does 😂😂😂I just noticed that while reading her story
After seeing how Gentaro started rampaging against his mother when he was approaching puberty, I worry that Kintaro may be even worse when he reaches that age. Genki does not discipline Kintaro much and he is continuously jumping on her, slapping her, and grabbing her food. When he is much larger and Genki is even older, I worry that poor Genki will be overwhelmed. Hopefully, Kintaro and Gentaro can be separated from her and allow her some peace in her old age.

So after Biju died, was Genki all alone until Momo grew up?
Yes. Her mother was alive for awhile when she came back, but then Genki was alone for several years until Momotaro came to the zoo.

Hi Nina - Silverback Gon lived at Kyoto until his death in 2009. He and Genki mated but had no offspring. Silverback Kenta lived at Kyoto until 2004, I do not know if he and Genki mated but it seems possible. There was also a female gorilla named Yasuko who lived at Kyoto until May of 2003.
So even after her mother, Hiromi, died in 2008, Genki was not completely alone.

@Charlotte-r Gon killed Hiromi ,Genkis mom right in front of her. We are lucky he didn't kill Genki. Hiromi was so sweet, I wonder why he killed her? Does anyone know more details about why he did it?

If Genki could only understand that Momotaro is the only bloodline of Biji and is now Genki’s mate/husband. That’s fate no doubt. Additional information about Biju: He has a daughter, Bandi, born in March 1997, living at ZooParc de Beauval in France. Her mother, Kabinda, also lives at the zoo and is now 41 years of age. Happy gorilla watching to you! 🦍🦍

I’d just like to say that it’s difficult to compare a financially strapped zoo like Kyoto with the San Diego zoo, arguably one of the top zoos in the world. The financial resources are incomparable. It is my understanding that the separate space being developed for Gentaro, and possibly Kinny is an attempt to create a “batchelor” situation within the constraints of the zoo. I know there has been consultation with other zoos. As mentioned by others, there are quite limited mating opportunities in Japan… so far. Perhaps more collaboration with European, and even American zoos is something we can all look forward to in future.

Genki's mother died & she was wild born. I've been trying to find out which silverback injured her severely. Genki's father didn't have much history either. Beautiful Genki came from humble beginnings. Don't forget that Biju's father Sired 27 offspring. Very impressive!

I'm so sad and glad for Ms G. Such a sad tale.
Her grief was caused by humans and their decisions. Maybe the story of what human's did to Momoko and Momotaro when he was 2 years old, that was just horrible. Separating mother and son so they could breed her with another silverback which failed. Momotaro would scream for his mother and she was stressed.
Exactly. Everyone focuses on what genki went through and say , poor genki. But nobody talks about what momo went through. At least genki was able to go back to her mother. Momo has been on his own since he was 6 1/2.

The way I look at it Genki still has problems,its great she has Kintaro, which makes it better, but Momentaro wasn't attracted to her, just when she was in heat, and ran from her and hit her, she got tired of chasing him, now he is more mature and comes to her rarely and she doesn't want nothing to do with him,he made her that way,she tired of it sometimes and trys to stay out of his way, when he greets her she leaves,she really has never had a love, and still dont, and she hadn't paid attention to Gentaro since he was 7 years old and now he don't want anything to do with her,but at least she has Kintaro.Its sad but the truth,I don't sugar coat, what I don't see,I do think that Momentaro has finally got love for Genki, but doesn't know how to show her, and she doesn't care anymore.

After seeing how Gentaro started rampaging against his mother when he was approaching puberty, I worry that Kintaro may be even worse when he reaches that age. Genki does not discipline Kintaro much and he is continuously jumping on her, slapping her, and grabbing her food. When he is much larger and Genki is even older, I worry that poor Genki will be overwhelmed. Hopefully, Kintaro and Gentaro can be separated from her and allow her some peace in her old age.
