Oh holy crap... at 30:40... Fish War is Milon's Secret Castle!
It's an even MORE broken Milon's Secret Castle. I didn't think it possible.
It's not Elvis puking blood he's spitting fire

"That song though, I recognize it." -Joel during whack mouse. WELL ITS PRETTY OBVIOUSLY "OH MY DARLING OH MY DARLING OH MY DARLING CLEMENTINE"
1manmoofilms I was thinking the same thing... and then I got Tom Lehrer's version of the song stuck in my head, where he covers it in the style of various popular musicians. The results are, as Tom Lehrer's work always is, hilarious.
*WE'RE GONNA HAVE LAWSUITS UP THE AAAAAASS*
37:23
"That's a-actually Aggronite"
I'm fucking done.
Mega Stone predicted by Joel fucking up Lairon's name on a bootleg Pokemon game.
And Combusken's...and Bellossom's...
*Came for the bootlegs*
*Stayed for 'Who's That Pokemon?' with Joel.*
And yes, Meditite is in fact a real pokemon. But that sprite is easily the most derptacular thing since Gen 1's Wigglytuff.
55:14 the hammer was so powerful it killed the emulator
Joels voice..... takes me back man, takes me back...
I watch His boootleg Vids at least thrice a year. Never gets boring.

That dancing game looks actually pretty good
At 48:27 that's Keroppi to Keroriinu no Splash Bomb/Keroppi & Keroleen's Splash Bomb and at 55:12 that's Hammerin' Harry.

29:56 "they didn't fuck up the names too bad" he says as "dongkey kong" is on screen
That DDR bootleg is actually quite impressive. The Pokemon bootleg also looked okay. Also, 48:36: SWASTIKAS.
Grant Tjeerdsma I know the swastika is used as a symbol for peace and such, but since the Nazis hijacked it in WWII, the swastika kind of has a bad rep in the West.
True

Didn't JonTron play the 120 in 1 thing on his Plug n Play things?
I remember Brave Boy being one he played, and it DID work.
Yes, but that was a 16 bit version rather than a basic NES one. Those games from Nice Code are common on multicarts and PnPs

Also, Night of Fire is a fucking awesome song. Thank you Joel.
If you're wondering, the title screen of Street Dance actually comes from the music video for Boom Boom Boom Boom by the Vengaboys.
Omg when he played the guitar.....I came a little
Have you seen the stream where he wrote a metal song against cancer with the help of the twitch chat?
Search "Joel metal song against cancer" and it should come up
He can play it good
I'm from 10 years in the future, and I can confirm Joel's guitar playing is still cum-worthy to this day.
"It's those Chinese Mario! They're bootlegged!"
That's super funny. The Chinese have ascended to being bootlegged themselves! Bootlegged Chinese people, making bootlegged products! XD
GRAND DAD!!! FLEENSTONES!!!
The profile made the quote kinda funny
So can anyone who understand NES programming tell me how in the world they managed to make the songs sound good? (for the first game of the video I mean, starts at 4:33)
This was most likely a rom intended for emulation only. The sound files were inserted as PCM, a pretty high fidelity audio file the nes could process. They're still pretty large files though and probably would be too large for an actual cart.
I’m not the biggest expert on the topic, but from what I’ve read the results here are impressive, but definitely technically possible. From what I can tell, the audio is stored as PCM samples, which are decompressed by the CPU and played back with 7-bit precision, but trying to play such complex samples pushes the NES CPU to it’s limit, and that’s why the controls are so infamously inconsistent and delayed, the CPU can’t keep up and misses inputs, or detects them with a noticeable delay. The NES is seriously limited both by cartridge memory and system memory, so the samples must be stored at a very low quality, 7-bit precision already is pretty low (16-bit is standard for CDs, and 24-bit is used by some audiophiles.) but the samples are likely recorded at 11khz or lower (compared to 44.1khz for CDs), and compressed down on the cartridge, then decompressed by the CPU into system memory and played back.
It sounds to me like the song is split into multiple samples, the background instruments are likely one or two samples, then the vocals are separate samples, with each sample being relatively short. This would allow the console to load the background sounds into memory and loop the same samples, while using the remaining memory for the vocals. I don’t know for sure how the vocal samples are handled, if there is enough memory the game might just load one set of vocal samples into memory, play them, then decompress the next set of samples in the gap between each set of vocals, however if the memory is too constrained to hold a full set, they might need to use another technique. For example, they could split the sample up so it isn’t always playing, for example it might play audio for 10 frames, then go silent for 10 frames, then play audio for 10 frames, and so on. During the off periods, no PCM data is needed, and it gives the CPU some time to be loading in the next sample. This tactic allows you to use higher quality samples than if the CPU needed to be both loading and playing at the same time. Toy Story on the Mega Drive used this method, and Capcom used a similar method of splitting samples to allow multiple high quality PCM samples to play at once, although the audio tends to sound scratchy and sometimes you can hear the gaps in the audio. Another thing to consider is the other NES audio channels, the NES could use synthesised instruments to fill in part of the song, then complete it with samples, however judging by how compressed and scratchy all of the instruments sound I suspect the songs here are mostly just PCM.
I’ve also heard rumours that the game uses Zxx midi commands to produce audio data more efficiently, but it all went over my head a bit. But this audio is definitely possible on Famicom, it just comes at a cost of being relatively low quality and only being possible when there is very little game logic being calculated, already like this the game struggles to keep up with your inputs, that’s why samples like this aren’t used in more games. There’s actually an earlier release of this bootleg from 2000, which doesn’t use the PCM samples and instead has traditional NES style music, and I’ve heard it runs better and is less inconsistent.
@@QlaxisIt definitely was intended for real hardware, or famiclones at least. It was released once originally on cartridge, on a 2-in-1 multicart which was included with many bootleg dance mats, they would come with a famiclone that you plugged into your tv with the multicart rom built in. I suspect some space was saved by using low-quality 7-bit samples at 11khz or less, and the audio data is likely compressed, but I am curious how big the cartridge memory is, evidently not enough to be commercially unviable though. The developers probably also reuse samples whenever possible, for example the repeating rhythm of bleeps in the background of butterfly, each “instrument” could be stored once then played back repeatedly from memory, without needing extra space.
@@justanotheryoutubechannel Whoa that was a very thorough explanation. Was an interesting read though, thank you =) I'd be interested if Joel (or anyone else) ever plays or played the other version of the bootleg to see and hear the differences.
bro.. 8 years ago, and it still makes me laugh my ass off every time, especially the jar jar binks bit
I figured out what the Combusken's moves are at 36:40:
Top left is "Flaming Chariot" which matches up closely with Flame Wheel, since it's 25 PP
Top right translates to "door", it's a 40 PP normal type move, which makes me think it's Growl, but Combusken's moveset here doesn't match up with any game
Bottom left is Ember, it's a direct translation
Bottom right is Dragon Rage which Combusken is unable to learn in any game. The bootleggers must've put it in for shits and giggles
FUN FACT: Alladin II in this stream is Magic Carpet 1001, for the Turbo Game (A Brazilian NES clone). It is one of the most difficult games I've ever played.
I too, have woken up to the sounds of explosions that didn't exist. Usually happens when I'm tired, and about to fall asleep.
53:46 Original the Character: Strawberry the Fuck
Ok, Joel knows Initial D, now that's awesome!
(Night of Fire no less! lol)
Oh, and that Street Dance game is actually pretty good, so it's the Pokémon "Diamond II", I guess if you understand the language and don't have the original games, it's a kind of alternative.
But Joel, Meditite is a real pokemon.
It WAS final fantasy 2 when it was on the SNES Joegel, you're good!
Waking up to sudden noises your brain conjures is called Exploding Head Syndrome. It's harmless, but it usually means you're stressed and not getting good sleep.
45:43 I remember having that when i was younger, I had a lot of bootlegged games, and didn't know
"where is the toilet?" is the most important scentence to learn how to say in another language

Oh my gosh, I've actually played "Super Mario 4". It was super confusing and I didn't know what boot legs were back then.
56:55 I like the bidoof heads plastered onto mobster bodies with crowns
I want to wake up to the sounds of WAH.
Fish War was a massively fucked up version of Milon's Secret Castle, if anyone was confused lol.
Milons secret castle is actually worse.
3:59, just how did they get such a high quality sample of Boom Boom Dollar on an 8-bit cartridge?
I've been woken up by "fake sounds" as well but they're voices like I think I hear my mom call for me but it's just after a dream.
Not even 10 minutes into stream and I hear eurobeat? Based
Joel, you beautiful man, you stole the show by using a locked up NES emulator as a metronome.

55:06 - 59:59 Wow, the new Paper Mario game looks great!
(If you aren't getting it, Mario's wielding a hammer in this game, as he would in the Paper Mario series.)
Since i dont like streams (due to the fact of everyone in the chat ignoring me no matter what i mean seriously wow) but i want to see full streams of joel, THIS IS FANTASTIC.
There is most definitely a reason people ignore you in the chat. You're have to be pretty annoying or contribute nothing to get ignored there
***** Yeah.... No.
Can someone check up on that for me?
Skaterboybob L2spot spam, kid.
Skaterboybob Joel doesn't read the twitch chat
Mario Sonic Zer0 He does rarely, but most of the time he doesn't.
I love how this stream is the equivalent of a movie sequel that's just about as good, but doesn't get as much attention as the first entry because it's not nearly as iconic.
4:38 My favorite moment.
14:40 for music of epic proportions.
Jesus, Joel, you're not half bad with a guitar. Might even say you're good!

Interesting....
57:08 That's one of the kings from SMB3
47:47 Is that Imajin from Yume Koujou?
I can't believe there's still no official Bitcrunched Butterfly audio at all
i'm actually really interested in the Pokemon Diamond for NES. because its clearly Ruby or Sapphire, but the maps are a little different, like in Maulville there wasn't a west exit to the city
Damn, Brilliant Diamond (Diamond II)looking good here
That Fish War game sounds familiar, but I can't seem to recall it. Was it Milon's Secret Castle?
Yes
I remember being on the livestream.
Good times!
Fish War = Milon's Secret Castle

What's the song used for the title screen of "Street Dance"? Sounds familiar...

With Wario, he's probably sucking in the air and farting it out.
I think my favorite part is when Joel realizes he has EHS.
Where can i get a rom for Jager 2-in-1 Street Dance and Hit Mouse?
