When you do a show like the MTV Video Music Awards you have an opportunity to explore and experiment, to revisit the past or to push towards the future. We knew we wanted to do something that hadn't been done before. Playing in total darkness, capturing our performance via thermal signal and doing it live was complex, challenging and seemingly impossible but with the help of a very patient MTV and an enthusiastic team of creative dreamers we accomplished our goal. Shannon looks dumb without a drum kit, just dragging around a tom that has no mic or trigger and yet plays both taiko drum sounds and snare. Tomo (although I love him) looks dumb pretending to play the guitar on a song that has no guitar. That rapper dude is sooo fuckin wack with his vocoder. Only Jared's performance is interesting. Forget the star system 30stm and go back to back to actually rocking satges.

The best walk on water performance
unique and incredible concept. idk why people are so surprised when bands evolve. the lyrics literally say "times are changing" for heaven's sake. they've even said they never intended to stay in one genre, they wanted to experiment this whole time. regardless, it doesn't take a genius to see the band's extreme talent and creativity.
By far the best performance of the night, you guys really blew everyone away

What I love about this performance it's about unity. There's no skin color, there's no race. It's a bunch of people performing on stage together showing (with the heat register) we are all the same. I love the meaning behind the song and the performance was amazing.
