- This is a neat idea and it has a lifetime warranty which is rare for a electronic tool, unfortunately it is underpowered and has insufficient airflow otherwise it could have been quite useful for a variety of tasks. It might be usful for arts & crafts/hobbies and some electronic preheating uses but it is such low airflow that it even has trouble deflating heat shrink tubing not because it is not hot enough but because it barely moves any air.

$39-45 these are going for in stores and online now. I almost pulled the trigger on one, but I'm so glad I found this video first. I was looking for something I could throw in my tool bag to heat shrink tubing in the field.

it looked like it started to work ok at the end when you put it closer to the shrink tubing. I wish you would've tried again with it held even closer, like so close that it's basically touching. If it works really well that way then I wouldn't consider the distance to be much of a drawback. Having such a short range could also be a benefit because sometimes when you're using a lighter in tight spaces, you have more heat going up above your workpiece than you want and you don't have much control over that.
When you talk about higher flow, problem is is that if you were to up flow output that would in turn cool the heating element too fast needing the heat coil to consume higher amps just to compensate for heat loss.
works great for unfreezing locks in the winter time. apply to key and frozen key hole , snomobile enlcosed trailer the locks like to freeze,,, love the usb charging in my truck. cheap and small to store
If i used that for soldering/desoldering SMDs. I stand a pretty good chance of destroying the new part being installed. My personal experience is that it is best to apply enough heat for a short time instead of slowly toasting the IC, the board and everything in the vicinity. Neighboring capacitors will hate that thing. :)
Funny you did a review on this today I was at Oriellys yesterday to pick some stuff up and came across Dorman compact heat gun for I think 28 bucks picked it up but have not messed with it yet nice review glad I didn’t see this one lol
I wonder if the battery can be upgraded but also carefully very slightly open them ceramic air holes of the heater itself for the air to blow over the coils some more. But than one would probably loose some temp from doing so
You think this would be a good alternative to a lighter for shining boots?
Bummer. HF has a nice butane soldering iron/torch/heat gun for around the same price. It feels kind of cheaply made but works fantastic.
might be good for automotive/boat use, in a confined area where you dont really want to use a lighter, but cant get a full sized heat gun in.
That is a great size for testing rate of rise heat detectors
Might be good for removing adhesive labels.
I need something like this to keep the dew off my 9 1/4 inch telescope. Cordless hair dryers only blow cold air, it seems.
Have you tried a lens warmer? Got one for my camera for around 20 bucks and then invested in a power bank for about 16 bucks. Can also use the power bank for cell phone, tablets, etc.

I wouldn't dismiss it so fast, I got one just for really small stuff in automotive where electronics or materials may be too close in proximity for other heat sources.
So far I think it is an absolutely cool device and would recommend for doing small concentrated areas.
If you need more heat then yes get the DeWalt or something similar.
Not sure why people's expectations are always 5 fold from what tools are meant for.

This should use 18V Ryobi HP+ battery. Even Bosch 18V battery can deliver over 1000 Watts, and pencil thin portable super hot air would be useful in many applications.
I wonder what they have in mind when they designed the shape of that tool

Ryobi will steal the idea using their 18V battery. Ryobi seems to make every tool for their 18V line.

4v x 10amps is 40watts, a 40 watt heat gun is a joke.
Weak flame lighter puts out 5x heat.
