What a nightmare of a job. Half the bike is taken apart, and the only thing untouched is the engine. Even Honda shaft drives from the 1980s don't need this. I can't believe this is expected every tire change or 10,000 miles. A new X-ring chain can last over 20,000 miles, and the best part is, it takes less than half an hour to swap it. Much less power loss and weight in chain final drive. Nonetheless, thank you for taking the time to show us this process. Cheers.
Thank you very much for this video, It gives me the confidence to do this job myself. it’s a pleasure to watch someone who knows what they doing working on such a beautifully engineered machine.

Great video and definitely a practiced hand at packing bearings, seals and splines. One thing I learned the hard way (on my R1100RT) was to use BMW's own branded oil in the transmission. My previous owner put in some "super lube" of some kind and the shifting was beyond awful. I left that lube in there for a year (because it was very clean). When I replaced the transmission lube with BMW's own stuff, it was like a completely different motorcycle. I dont care what kind of motor oil you use or what brand of battery, but I'll only use BMW trans lube.

Nice work! In my opinion you should troque down the non adjustable pin first. If you do it this way, you will put more pressure on the bearings if you turn the non adjustable pin afterwards. Bad ass video brother, I just bought a 2003 r1160rt and I'm worried that might have to do this some day The only thing I don't like about the BMW is you have to take the whole bike apart when you have to work on it 1:00:11
Good job and perfect video. Question for you sir: does the front boot (between the swingarm and gearbox) get fiddly to install or does it just fall into place? Small tip: For the swingarm and FD bearings; torque the fixed pivot pin first, then the floating pin (the one that has the locknut). Accurate torquing will otherwise not be achieved. Clever of you to use the 12mm Allen nub + flat spanner to hold the floating pin! I had shortened an L shaped Allen to give enough room in the 30mm socket (which, like you, I cut open with a grinder). Happy riding!
I use the K99 Water resistant grease from Morris Lubricants www.morrislubricants.co.uk and the Carlube Silicone multi-purpose water repelent grease. Ideally a non petrolium base grease is preferable on plastics and rubber parts. Hope it helps...
Hi nice job I have the same bike and this maintenance is very important, mine is 20 years old and 45,000 km. I live in Italy. I did not understand well the function of the red dot on the cardan shaft and what I have to do when assembling. Thank you
That’s used to align the cardan . In this video that wasn’t made (or wasn’t showed ) . When the cardan isn’t aligned properly will break ...its a very common fail.
Great video! How long did this actually take minus all the RT fairing removal stuff(I have a GS)? And thanks so much for leaving out the unnecessary commentary and idiotic music!
Personal choice. The threads are very fragile and can be damaged very easily. If the correct torques settings are applied properly there is no need of extra loctite. As any other screws on the bike it should be checked regularly for extra safety.
Sorry for being such s greenhorn but the 06 hexhead r1200rt is equipped with this right? 78,000 miles it's one of the 5 factory schedules services in the owners manual What else should I do at those miles addressing engine oil filter air filter.
