A little comment section message in a bottle for you Ghibli heads out there: the dark blue seaplane in the background of a few shots is THE plane that Curtis' plane is based on in Porco Rosso.

Good to know 🤙
The Curtiss Navy Racer, also called the R3-C?
Dude, that thing looks like it's ready for someone jump in and take off right now... those artists & model makers that worked on it did an absolutely incredible & amazing job! :D
Imagine being those Ladies crawling inside the X-wing, 50 years from now telling their Grandkids about Helping to restore it from the inside out.....
My brother Matt. So proud!
He is an excellent and informative speaker! We appreciated his time.

I could look at that X-Wing all day, but the dream would be to sit in the cockpit, and relive a childhood fantasy! Now I must immediately see if I can find pictures or video of it to stop my curiosity from driving me nuts.

@@BinkSayres thanks, I’ll check it out 👍
Every time I see the X wing on the screen, it brings a smile to my face. Can't wait to see it suspended in its spot.
It's almost like a Spitfire for me.
In the Android's Dungeon?
I love this sort of content because i often ponder to myself what someone whose based in more real world applications would think when interacting with pieces intended for a totally different universe
Wow. Adam asks’ the most interesting and amazingly worded questions. I love X-wings and Star Wars, but Adam Savage is just incredible
X Savage
"This was built 20 years ago" Well, no, not really. This is Poe's X-wing from Episode 9, which you can tell by the orange and white paint scheme. Even if it's the same prop from Episode 7, that's still only six or seven years.
What a travesty.
Yer it's a T-70, different engines to the 65
it could have been built 20 years ago, if they took one of their old X-wings and gave it a new paint job.
@@Tojeaux_ they are of completely different designs, and don't share any parts.
@@Tojeaux_ The problem with that is that the T-70 X-wing wasn't even designed 20 years ago, much less built as a full size prop. That would mean it was built for Episode 2: Attack of the Clones, which had no X-wings in it, much less the T-70 model from The Force Awakens.
So glad to see more of this
I like how they have motors taken apart for the thrust caps.
Love your videos so much! Very educational and fun.
So I'm trying to figure out the time line for this and maybe I've missed something: This looks like a T-70 X-Wing which was made for the new Star Wars films. However, they mention this was built 20 years ago. Did they really start production on those props 20 years ago? Was that section of the craft a full duplication of an older ship? Or was the person in the video getting confused about when parts of this were made?
Thanks!
He was confused. I’m sure Adam squared him away, afterwards…. This one is from 2015.
I assume that they talk about the Parts that were used to build the x-wing to be 20 years old, not the x-wing itself.
@@pala1742 Eh... Unlikely. His exact words were "this was built 20 years ago when they weren't so hard to find". He probably just misspoke or got confused in the moment. Spouting information like this with a camera and microphone recording you can throw you off if you're not used to that kind of thing, so it's not that surprising.
They were talking about the spare parts used as greeblees on that back panel.
Some of those, manufactured 20, 30 or 40 where easy and cheap to find back then, like the photografic flash handle/ light saber Adam mentionned, but not anymore and today they are worth their weight in gold!
As Adam mentioned they came from an aviation salvage yard where hollywood prods get all that sort of things (there must be a video somewhere on YT about that) which is also some of the only sources were someone restoring a warbirds can find the part he is missing.
@@bummer6 I think he's talking about the parts, built 20 years ago.
That was great fun! Thank you.
great that an X-Wing made it, just wished it was the T-65B not the T-70.......
Im for the original X wing to be on display not this one, but
The House of Mouse wouldn't of allowed it being the control freaks they are, they want to advertise their own crap and recoup some of the damage done for their abysmal movies produced by Jar Jar Abrams and Ruin Johnston with special K at the helm.
What I don't get is why he said this was built 20 years ago? The film came out in 2015? Can someone explain?
@@Beer_Dad1975 Seems like a small mistake OR he thinks it's the original X-Wing. 😀
@@maddocmiller6475 Thanks, yeah I think he meant to say 10 years maybe? Given it would have had to have been built at least a couple of years before the film came out that might make sense.
@@Beer_Dad1975 Yes something like this. But it doesn't matter, the guy has a giant friggin' X-Wing at his workplace and we don't. 😢
Well seeing these close up shots of the rear assembly, they're apparently are Phillips head screws in the Star Wars universe ;) There's several on here.e
They are also visible on Rey's staff.
I'm an old-school SW fan with a deep nostalgia for Luke's T-65 X-Wing but I have to say Poe's Episode 9 T-70 is one of the best looking fictional spacecraft ever made.
I know starwars pretty well... but who the heck is Poe?
@@patflat456 he's one of the lead characters of the sequel trilogy.
@@520azdc Oh, that's NOT Star wars... I guess that's why I've never heard of him.

1:23 I see hex screws.
I bet a hydrospanner can't tighten those.
1:40 "But this was built 20 years ago" wait what? Force Awakens is 6 years old, guys.
That caught my attention immediately. It is definitely a model from the sequel trilogy which means it couldn't be more than nine years old maximum if it was was one of the first completed models used for filming.
@@scottstark5528 is it possibly a modification of one of the originals? I'm not super familiar with the ships in starwars
@@RennyChuggs It is a T70 model used in the sequel trilogy and not T65 model used in the original trilogy. Just look at the engines on the wings as the first tell, also the paint scheme is another tell. If they were doing a modification/ hybrid design then it wouldn't have any business being in the Smithsonian. You can do a google picture search of an Incom T65 X-wing and a Incom T 70 X-wing and clearly see the differences.
@@RennyChuggs Nope, just look at the engine intakes at the frontside of the wings. The original X-Wing had four small intakes, one at each wing (basically four engines, one sitting on each wing), while the newer Resistance X-Wing had those two big intakes, that split right in the center, once the wings open to the X form.
I really wonder, why they didn´t chose an old original X-Wing (the Incom T-65) for the museum, why a new one?
I think he was referring to the parts being 20yrs old not the X-wing its self
... this is freaking amazing
While the T-70 is a nice bird...the T-65 will always be my favorite. To steal a line..."An elegant weapon for a more civilized age..."
GREAT STUFF! Thank You!
Life-sized greebling! Oh yeah! That landing gear is beautiful.
The original X-Wing is still the best.
Awesome stuff!
wow that's an awesome video, thanks
You really kill me man. You have the best job on the planet.
I wish they had done this with the BSG Vipers and Raiders. Such great art needs to be preserved and shared to inspire future generations. It should not be left to rot outside or hoarded away by rich collectors.
This is amazing, I never thought a X-wing would be in the Smithsonian.
Why not? The USS Enterprise from Star Trek is there, seems only fair! LOL!
It’s a shame it’s a shitty one from the new movies. Oh well.
@@5055hunter Well… not a full size fictional toy. The close Encounters ship is on display too. But that is only three to four feet in diameter. Not sure what size the Enterprise toy is but it’s probably about the same.
I’m was split on this being displayed. Not anymore. As it’s a fictional full size display I think it’s not worth it. It’ll take up space where something of real value could be displayed.
@@Scottie8740 Totally agree! I think the Enterprise is the original 6 foot model used for filming. I'm indifferent to this vs. a "real" aircraft display. The Smithsonian needs to attract visitors for all kinds of reasons. If this gives someone a reason to go, I'm for it.
@@thewalrus511 I thought they were working on restoring the one from the original series.
some good questions!
Totally awesome dude....
Designing the system to hang the aircraft is a full time job at the Air and Space Museum. 15 years ago I saw the job posting when I was finishing my aerospace engineering degree.
Very Good!.
My kinda people! Thanks for the inspiration
I wish you had this kind of content when they were restoring the original 11-foot TOS Enterprise model!
Wow so nerdy and I love
I noticed a lot and I mean a lot of the larger tubing with nuts on the end was simple copper tubing with flare nuts used to join the condenser and fan coil unit with Air conditioning.
I understand that hanging this piece is challenging enough, but imagine if the wings also moved into their X configuration every 30 minutes? I'd wait a half-hour to witness that!
@5:57 : Suddenly Adam becomes envious of welders. XD
I like Adam talking and building movie props much better than when he was on myth busters
Feels cool to finally see something before the man who see’s everything first
Awesome :)
Hideki is very impressed with the big model.
That’s my dad!!
He's awesome!
@@tested he really is! We used to always watch myth buster and I was so excited when he told me he spent the day with you!
1:42 Phillips head screws. Or maybe they are JIS and that’s OK.
That rear panel really is a work of art. I don’t know why something like whatever it is supposed to be would be exposed like that, but it is cool to look at. I always got the impression in science fiction that durability of things mechanical is something the future people have gotten really figured out. Everything works forever. Even if it’s sunk in a crappy lagoon for weeks/months/years. That is, until it gets blasted or deactivated.
Lol I swear I just seen a 4L60 clutch band in there as well..
Well done 👍
Bro when Adam poked his head into that Air intake my head got blown off just by the shear size of that thing!
The back section of the original X-wing's fuselage is based around the upper hull of a Tamiya Sherman tank model.
I like the relay sockets...
I keep looking at the seam where the wing opens, I assume it will be hung up in "Attack" or open position?
Do these wings even spread or is this one made to to look like it does but the seam is actually sealed?
i was wondering that myself. But he did say it was made to be in a landing position. So i have doubt the attack position internals have detail in them, or even open up :(
Sadly there's just no way they'd have engineered a system that would never have been used on set. So no.
My dream car…someday.
😂
6:51 ... " I cannot wait to see it in the air ..."
- Yes, would like to see it FLY in the air. Sure, it's been done before as a small kit rocket & as a RC airplane, but as lifesize? Epic.
I wonder if that got sent instead of one of the cooler OG T-65's because of filming on Rogue squadron and other Rebellion era projects?
Aside from prolonged closeup, the thing missing is the vehicle... the whole thing, which we get to see for about a second obscured by stuff.
The ingenuity of prop-makers is a huge middle finger to the restorers and preservers of their creations. It's a huge leap from parts you find on an old bicycle in a pawn shop to having actual part numbers from the manufacturer.
Thank you guys for masking up. Great video

@@wisico640 I've been sick a few times in my life too. Mortality is something to contemplate. A coward dies a thousand times before his death, but the valiant taste of death but once. It seems to me most strange that men should fear, seeing that death, a necessary end, will come when it will come. Basically don't worry about it. Stress is a leading cause of death itself.

Anyone else noticed the stenciling (2:50) on the side of the fuselage ? Look like its say Black Happy Thielan, anyone know what it means ??
does the cockpit detailed too or just outside?
Maybe Adam could 3D print some caps that fit over the hanging hardware and look more like something from the Star Wars universe.
Guy has the best title ever: X-Wing Mechanic.
I thought that the new trilogy confirm that Philips head is cannon with Rey's staff :P
The biggest problem I have with the new X-wings is that the have those turbine looking engine intakes that are supposed to split horizontally. LOL Maybe it's just an intake and the turbine sections are further back.
They look like jet engines we have on Earth but in the Star Wars universe they don't function like jet engines. They're intakes but they're not turbines. They don't spin.
@@520azdc good point
I could just watch videos about the x-wing forever, lol.
so I read this as "FRICTION based aircraft" and thought this was going to be some mind-blowing propulsion mechanism i had never heard of. this is neat too though.
before anyone else says it I KNOW. i was thinking friction-based engine not lift.
So when will this be on display to the public?
2022
It’s technically on display now. This was filmed in the restoration hanger of the Udvar-Hazy Center. There is a mezzanine visitors can use to watch the work. I was there a couple months ago and was able to get photos of it. And they have signage for it on the mezzanine as well.
As cool as all of this is, I don't understand the need to fly it up off of the floor. It was designed to be in the landed position. Why not just display it on the ground, canopy open, ladder down, and ready to board. Let visitors walk around it and see it up close (obviously with barriers to prevent them from touching it). It's going to look odd hanging in a nosedive with the landing gear down. And, correct me if I'm wrong, but... Shouldn't it be BB-8 in the rear co-piloting?
Ground space is at a premium in the museum. Also, its easier for them to have something hanging than to constantly have work around it in the ground.
Will it be shown in the attack position(Xwings open)? Or closed?
Since there was no need for it to ever open it’s S-foils on screen, you can guarantee that function wasn’t built into this prop.
Guesses on how many SD cards Adam used documenting the X Wing.
Would have been cool if it was a T-65 instead of a Poe-mobile.
Such a shame it’s a sequel X-wing and not an original trilogy one
I wish I could've worked for museums.
뭔 수록 양덕을 이기냐.. 최고다,,
I imagine she is based on the ground in hard sand with foot prints , BB8 track rollaways and repair modules hosed up to it, all barried off from touching off course . Have a Test bench unoccupied linked up waiting for the ground crew to come back look to it
Have they explained how they shipped this and got it to the Smithsonian?
Looks like these folks are as jazzed up to talk to Adam, as Adam is to talk to them.
I wonder what the craftsmen at Lucas Arts think about when they watch something like this?
I'd say hanging an X-Wing with a Jurgens ring gives it a "it's a spacecraft, and we hung it like any other spacecraft" authenticity. Pretty neat, IMHO. But, twenty years?? What X-wing IS this? I thought the curator said it was from episode 9!
wow
Thats a cool facemask adam,
Much as I always liked the design of the X-Wing fighter family (including those of the original trilogy) I find it somehow absurd (or at least bizarre, or puzzling) that they left their "butt" uncovered, showing openly all mechanisms on display there. Why didn't they shut it, and with some armored plate or something? It´s like a call for enemy fighters saying "spank me here...". Maybe cooling problems are the main ground why they left the rear unveiled?...
Also, I don't find much sense that the turbines of this latest version of the X-Wing are divided or cut by the half. I know, it´s a sci-fi machine, but if we compare it with the intakes of real jets, I wonder how the turbine blades can spin enough so as to provide the engines with enough power. Then again, it´s all sci-fi, I know, but the old T-65 X-Wing, with its rounded air intakes, looks to me at least in that sense more realistic than this one.
So they put those aft section greeblies together 20 years ago?
What movie is it from
W...W? The light saber is based on a Speed Graphic's flash handle?! I must be nerdier than I thought to be so thrilled by that.
I was in the Royal Air Force from 1976 to 1986, and I was a photographer and later lithographer.
The standard 120 roll film camera we used was either a Hassleblad or a Rolleiflex, and the flash unit we used for both was that Graflex that was obviously the source of Luke's lightsabre; it had a folding reflector for the flashbulbs that I have never seen again.
We had dozens of them, often stored in drawers as most photography could be done in the studio or quicker using available light.
When doing PR photography, we would routinely use these items, and I spent hours wondering how I could spirit some away, but the accounting for equipment was rigorous those days.
@@stevetheduck1425 No idea they were once as common as muck in some quarters.
Is that a wing off of a b17 in the background?
It’s a B-26 named “Flak Bait”. The aircraft with the most combat missions during WWII.
I wish they had an X-Wing from the original trilogy rather than these new Disney movies
It is reflecting the McQuarrie concept artwork. Which is actually more elegant than the original movies version really.
