Do you know where I can get the wires to make reeds? I just cant justify the price for one for my loom am poor and weaving yarn is expensive enough as it is! Lol Plus I think it would be a good self-educational adventure. I understand how they're made I just cant find the wire. I want to dabble with making fan reeds and multi epi dents as well!
I would try talking to a machine shop or a local steel supplier. You could also go and gather reeds from a local water source and make them the truly old-school way. There are people who claim that reeds made of actual reed are amazing to weave with. Best of luck!
@EugeneTextileCenter unfortunately I'm in the desert so we don't have water sources! lol I'll look around for shops, i guess. Not too much close to me on my side of town at all for industrial goods unless its an old shop thats still around. Its weird how big our city is but how hard it can be to find things (even weaving yarn is like an hour away and I haven't been to the shop physically to know if they have actual weaving yarn or just sock weight yarns). Its rough out here! Lol
@@buffpanda527 Sounds like it's time for a road trip! Best of luck... You can also use splints of bamboo (or other hard wood) instead of reed or metal if those are easier for you to find where you are.
i will be making reed out of steel banding tape/strapping tape. It is 0,5 or 0,4mm thick and 13mm wide, rigid and springy. You can find it in shops that do heavy packaging, they will gladly sell you several meters. For my 20DPI by 40 inch reed i will need some 130 meters of it. Cheers!
Great how-to. I have some reeds that are too long, not looking forward to shortening them! Also, it looks like the reed has a lot of rust on it. How do you deal with that?
For surface rust, we use a brass brush (like for cleaning a barbeque). For more serious rust, Naval Jelly is an option, but it will leave the surface pitted. I would also consider shortening the reed to get rid of the worst bits.
thank you for this tutorial! it was so helpful!
You are so welcome!
Not the sort of reed I was expecting! 😂what are these reeds used for?
These are reeds for weaving. We use them to keep the warp yarns spread out at a specific density. It helps keep the fabric even or light.
@@EugeneTextileCenter thank you. :-)
I am reed technician in bangladesh

Where can you buy the end caps and bar after you have cut a longer reed? I made 2 out of 1 and need the ends.
That's a great question! We just save them off of old reeds that are too rusty to use. I'll look around and see what I can find

I have old reeds like this. How do I do this rust cleaning without damaging the tape?
