  • TalkTV's International Editor Isabel Oakshott talks to Mike Graham about a teenage boy being arrested after one of the UK’s most photographed trees was “deliberately felled” in an apparent act of vandalism.
Northumbria Police launched an investigation after the Sycamore Gap tree was “deliberately felled overnight”, saying they were treating it as an act of vandalism.
The force later said a 16-year-old boy had been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage.
Isabel says: "It seems very unlikely that this young person did this on his own. It's symbolic of the state of this country right now".

We have been paying the price ever since the 1960s of listening to do-gooders who said it is cruel to discipline or smack unruly children. At this time wet law and order came in accompanied by abolition of the death penalty for even the most terrible crimes. Then along came so called "progressive" teaching methods which caused teachers to be labelled "old fashioned" if they taught things like reading, writing and arithmetic in the traditional way with quiet children facing the blackboard.. As a teacher in the 1960s I fought hard against this nonsense as I could see that standards of both work and behaviour were slipping but it was to no avail and next to go were many excellent Grammar schools. Now we are hard pressed to produce children sufficiently educated to become scientists and doctors etc and have to bring them in from abroad while criminal gangs, drugs, vandalism, graffitti, littering and knife crime are rife. As Home Secretary the politician Roy Jenkins said that the death penalty and strict law and order had no place in a civilised society. Now society is far LESS civilised as a result of all this nonsense.

Littering and knife crime made to sound as bad as each other is also quite shocking 🤦,what has beating children over the decades achieved in them reaching their goals and targets ,nothing is the answer ,all it teaches is for them to want to get their own back and become violent, your the type of person that has no self discipline or control which leads to violence like beating children ,you couldn't teach a dry leaf to blow in the wind 🤦

From then on I never looked back and passed the 11 plus exam to Grammar school where my success continued. Had I been in a present day school I dread to think how I would have turned out. I was just one of many who succeeded thanks to the threat of corporal punishment.

@@pauldadson3812 "Quite shocking"? You went through what I wrote obviously determined to find as many little things to question as possible. It was the THREAT of corporal punishment which acted as a big deterrent for most potential troublemakers and because of that it rarely had to be carried out. When woolly headed idealists caused its abolition in a blaze of publicity it took just a few determined troublemakers to undermine the atmosphere in a school and the rot began to set in. Fortunately wise heads would expel them after suitable warnings because their disruptive presence was unfair to those children who wanted to learn. So now we have far more children expelled from school than ever in the past.

This Country has absolutely taken a severe turn for the worse. Frankly I despair for our future. There is no way someone official marked the tree, they have already commented on the incident, and why would someone official cut it down in the middle of the night, risking injury. The perpetrators did it so they knew where to cut. There is no way this was the work of a lone sixteen year old either. Firstly It required specialist equipment, secondly they would have to drive there and lug the chainsaw and lighting to the site, and third, it’s in the middle of nowhere so they would have to drive a suitable vehicle there. The teenager is taking the rap because he’s underage and will get nothing, or he’s so thick he’s been boasting about it.

Politicians who consistently LIE and FAIL to acknowledge their own Duplicity and Short Sightedness right across the spectrum.

Need 72cc or more probably 85 or 90cc saw. Big heavy professional only saw. Oh, and very sharp chain. Farmers and landowners in UK normally have medium 20 inch or possibly 24 inch bar and 56cc or perhaps 65cc saws.

Hard enough in full daylight in the dark ? No wedges ? Just no. That tree is many many tons maybe near 50 tons or more. As still full leaved and full of water. The blow it has been dealt will, eventually, be to it's great advantage. It has essentially been copiced, and it will now go through a fantastic cycle of regeneration.
