People who can't hear the fact that her voice got more and more shredded as the run continues are part of the problem. It's not "vocal technique" or "safe vocal fry." She's like 17. She's doing what sounds cool and what makes the audience go crazy. Which also ended up trashing her voice through the run. You can literally hear the difference between her first preview sound and her closing voice. People like Presley, who have been singing the role a LOT, don't sing it this same way, but they sing it in a way that is safe. And her voice still sounds great. I have t heard Sophia for awhile, but I'd assume her voice has healed somewhat from this show. But rest assured, this is not what healthy singing sounds like. And I think it's dangerous to teach a generation of Broadway kids and wannabes that "you can do it too," especially when they don't have much of a grasp on what they're doing. As a 20 year old Broadway-wannabe kid myself, I know the feeling of wanting to stand out. But this, this is not the way.
Yea I have a slime tutorial of Beetlejuice I watch with Sophia as Lydia and during some parts her voice full on gives out, it’s actually kinda scary….like during “yeah I got game” in say my name her voice completely just dies and makes a low growl like sound while cracking.
I’m a little late lol, but Sophia doesn’t always sing like this. She has said in interviews that it was a choice for Lydia and that it helps her get into character. If you have seen Lazarus she appears as the girl and sings very beautifully, and I would definitely suggest listening to Life on Mars because it shows that she has done more than the rock style! :)
She sounds a million times better when she is on Broadway for Beetlejuice because her voice is more mature. You should really check out the more the final product of the song because also the words have changed since that video.
You comparing Lacey Sturm of Flyleaf's voice to Rugrats is hilarious and so accurate. Lacey's stylistic and intriguing way of singing and voice was stunning and special for what the music though.

I believe they took it down a 1/2 step, and cut a verse… this girl is amazing. I Worked at the theatre for about 8 months… she rocked it eight shows a week … week after week and seldom called out. Truly amazing and she should’ve been at least nominated for a Tony. She was robbed.
SAC gives me a kind of Idina Menzel "I'mma point this voice at you and by god you'd better get out of the way I don't know what it's gonna do" vibe :D :D It's all raw feel and emotion and I dig it. Ok, she probably needs to modify her technique or something because it doesn't sound healthy when she gets on a roll! But you just feel the performance. The other Lydias I've heard (Presley Ryan and Dana Steingold) have beautiful voices, but no one has that rage and fury and emotion in the voice like Sophia Anne Caruso.

Tommy's voice actress joined The Voice a long way back. lol. it is kinda cute imagining a rugrat singing a rock song and her performance there's the closest thing we'll ever get.
so many of these comments are missing the point and scope of these videos. she's not judging Sophia as a singer as a whole, she's analyzing just this one recording. and she's right, which Sophia figured out as you can hear that she got out of her throat a lot as the show went on. FYI you can totally do vocal damage for this; do not try at home.

I enjoyed her singing/voice. More diaphragm and opening it up a bit. Sounds like a rubber ducky, at times. Oh boy. Her pianissimo soft voice is pleasant. Either she is real real young or she’s intentionally trying to make that eerie ducky ducky 2nd grade undeveloped voice.
I love her voice, but I also do worry about her technique. And my reasoning isn't because of the way she sings, I'm not knowledgeable enough about technique to speak on that and I wouldn't want to give an uneducated opinion on it, but specifically because of her performance of mama would at the black and white ball, especially on the belt on 'on the other foot' (look up the video to see what I mean). She just sounds tired the whole time, and her voice gives out on the belt I haven't heard too much else of her performances beyond Beetlejuice, so I don't really know how she's doing now, and again, I can't speak too much on technique because I am too uneducated in that field to speak on it, it's just that kind of thing like mama would that makes me worried and I hope that kind of thing hasn't continued to happen
