Four ways to die according to twoset:
1. Write the ninth symphony;
2. Playing too fast;
3. You hurt your hand playing the violin, your blood just stop flowing, and you lose blood;
4. -You break your bow.- You break a bone. _Sorry Brett, English is not my native language_
Well I must be undead….

Yeah oboe and bassoon reeds cost $20-30 to buy finished. If you start with ungouged cane it’s not expensive at all but takes hours to get a batch of reeds ready. Unlike single reeds where people don’t flinch when one breaks every time we break a double reed it’s a time of mourning.
Yeah, and one reed only lasts around a month or so (depending on how much you play)
The tools to make the reeds aren't cheap though. And it takes skill to make good ones. I wouldn't say we single reed players don't flinch when we break a reed. It hurts a lot when it was one of our good reeds for sure. The fact that a box of ten reeds (USD $30+) might have as many as four good ones in it doesn't help. While I think double reeds end up being pretty costly, single reeds aren't far behind.

1:15 ~As someone who majored in bassoon in college for a year, yes, bassoonists make their own reeds. I had to buy $500 worth of equipment before attending college and we had an hour long class that met once a week dedicated to just making reeds in the bassoon professor's office. It was honestly a lot of fun bonding with the others and one of the highlights of majoring in bassoon. Unfortunately, I didn't stay in music and basically wasted all that money.

@@iamperplexed4695 Russia is banned from the games, but their athletes can participate in the ROC team, which is an acronym for Russian Olympic Committee, but as I understand it, as “ROC” is the official name of the team, it doesn’t explicitly mention Russia. A couple months ago, I decided to go to a music conservatory for college. I love classical music and I’m a pretty good pianist and I thought I could make a living out of it. As I was practicing non-stop, I started getting more and more stressed out. Missed deadlines, disappointment from my teacher, depression, anxiety, and fear of failure made me start to hate classical music. The one thing in life I really, truly loved. Every time I would sit down at the piano, or listen to a piece, or watch your channel, I would panic and freak out about my audition and how my pieces weren’t even CLOSE to where they should’ve been. About a week ago, I made the decision to stop pursuing a spot at a conservatory. That was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made in my life, but it was also the best one I’ve ever made. I can listen to classical music without guilt, I can play a shitty version of a very difficult piece and have fun with it. I decided to sit down and watch one of your videos for the first time in months today, and I realized how much I had missed this. You guys make me so happy, and I’m so glad I can enjoy classical music again. Thank you TwoSet 💜
0:08 "he thought about it"😏😏
5:42 brett’s face when eddy said “people without perfect pitch can still tell if something is in tune or not” he looks guilty 😭😭
Single reeds are costly because you can only get a certain amount every box. The quality is also not equal between each reed, so one may be worse than another. I use Vandoren so maybe i am using the wrong brand. Also if you chip one, which is easy to do unless you are spatially aware, you lose that reed. A box of ten costs me 30 USD, and that is for an Alto saxophone. Gets worse in price as the instruments get bigger. Bassoon and Oboe reeds cost about that much(according to my friend who plays Bassoon) for ONE reed. Though those last way longer than the average two weeks for single reeds, though singles can last longer if you cycle them. Ofc reeds can be made at home , it is tedious and more so as they get bigger or if they are double reeds. Single reeds can be soaked in your mouth for about 35-50 seconds. I believe Bassoonists have to soak for 90 seconds more or less( I don’t play a double reed) fully submerged in water in a small pill bottle or a similar container.
Yeah one bassoon reed roughly lasts 1 month or so depending on how much you practice (averaging 1 1/2 - 2 hours every day)
From my (decades of) experience, Vandoren aren't any more inconsistent than any other brand. Basically, none of the reeds in any box are the same. This isn't always bad, since reeds that don't seem to work in some conditions suddenly become your "best" reeds when conditions change. (Humidity, temperature, altitude, you name it, can all affect how a reed plays.)
@@elissahunt my clarinet teacher never threw a reed away unless it was terminally damaged. He was forever recycling them. He played with the Camden wind quintet so a pretty good musician
Brett and Eddy: Did you put you hand up?
Me: *gets scared and throws my hand up*
Exactly!!! I'm really busy with my lab work but I still tried to practice at least 2hr a day, even if that means from 8:30-10:30pm or something like that. I can be super exhausted by work but practicing is never tiring to me, it's more like a mental therapy! I LOVE PRACTICING!!!
