For the longest time I've been trying to learn to troubleshoot circuit boards without a schematic . This channel is a goldmine of practical knowledge. Thank you so much.
i remember some one once asked me what's the difference between a server and a full pc. i told them, if you dropped a full pc on your foot it would huurt, but if you dropped a server on your foot, your foot would be pizza
LOL 😂😂😂
Always cool to see you get great deals , and i agree with the pricing you do , i also always check sold items and do a rough medium value .
cheers Richard and keep the content coming :D
Happy New Year To You too.
Man, so many AT "beige boxes"! Very good price. Don ´t know about the price there at the Canaria but where I live 15€ is a good price even for a usable case and PSU! Retro HW price are now going crazy! Good luck! Lets build a DOOM machine! Happy New Year!
Living in the rural midwest, it's cheaper and easier to source worldwide via ebay. I got the complete guts of a MMX PC for 50 USD plus 20p&p from Russia a few years sgo. It's a crazy world. PC innards worked fine.
In France they also stopped discounts and there were also queues. But the worst was during a strike in petrochemical companies a few months ago. People panicked and there was a widespread fuel shortage. People were fighting at gas stations because of the long queues and rude people cuting in line. So you're lucky to be in Canaries Island. Perhaps the sunny weather makes people nicer
True. If the day gets too stressful you can always just go to the beach, it's never more than 12.5 miles to the coast wherever you are and the sun is always shining somewhere on the island (caveat: during daylight hours only)
9:53 - Coming from area where people have a lot of experience with wars, stockpiling is nothing new, not only for fuel. I saw people filling barrels at petrol station. But again its almost impossible to see fuel shortage here to be honest.
Experiencing fuel shortage is dangerous but again its indicator that state was not prepared for it, or people in countries which did not had wars for a long time, simply over react to minor things.
In the summer prices of fuel rose dramatically. I then went on internet to find the cheapest fuel in and around Wolverhampton. One petrol station advertised fuel at practically cost price . I went to this station and the queue to the forecourt was over half a mile in one direction.
Let me tell you a few strange things about Gran Canaria, compared to the UK. Firstly, supermarkets here do not sell fuel. Secondly diesel is usually cheaper then petrol by about 10 cents but currently it is 1 cent more expensive. Thirdly, the cheapest place to fill up here is.... wait for it.... on the motorway services, often up to 5 cents cheaper per liter than the towns. The second cheapest place is the petrol station at the airport. Oh actually come to think about it there is a petrol station in a town near airport called Aguimes (pronounced A-wee-mess) that is cheaper than anywhere else on the island that I know of, it's under €1 per liter there. But that doesn't mean there is a queue.
great video Richard :) I love watching these boot sale trying to make cash from P.C's :) cool to watch :)
I have the same Gigabyte motherboard, and it has been reliable in a retro machine running XP and Win7. I think o picked mine up for about $25 about 4-5 years ago. It’s not a top of the line 775 board but it has a lot of features.
Love these vid's, you could shut those doubters up with a receipt and careful not to Dox !....cheers
I know if beer was going be limited ,the "owd hut" would go mental lol ,good vid Rich👍
Haha the Owd Hut eh? Is it still open?
@@LearnElectronicsRepair yes Rich it was done up a few years a go, a lot have shut now, I played darts for the three tuns, that's been flattened now had good times around longton 👍
@@gordonemery6949 Darts at the Three Tuns eh? I bet you also played the Kimberley a few times 😉 And lived to tell the tale
@@LearnElectronicsRepair was that in gomsmill ?
@@gordonemery6949 Yep, it was on the corner of Goms Mill Road and Kimberly Street, where the road turns into a footpath that eventually crosses the brook and ends up in Blurton. Do you frequent 'Neckenders' facebook group? There are old photos and memories there every day.
6:40 old MSI motherboards have model number with revision under PCI slots (second white from left).
Gigabyte boards under PCI-E, with revison number in left up corner (close to screw hole - if the board is places like on your video) or model number above RAM slots (if AGP is for gpu).
Asus under PCI, or above agp/pci-e.... anyway these are typical places.
Yeah in UK they panic buy fuel, they would also clear out all the toilet rolls and bread whilst the garage had them as well lol
Cool clips . I like your voice .Makes me sleepy. cheers
i didn't see it on that server but on some servers you get status lights near certain parts that light up if there's a fault in that area.
if you look up what model of server that is, there should be a beep solver for it on the net.
I'd be tempted to buy a field in Fuertaventura make a giant shed and rig up all the carbooty finds, stick a sign up in the middle of no where call it a vintage internet cafe and sell cafe con leche and beer, if anyone spills anything I wouldn't give a rats arse and we could have command and conqueror week long tournaments whilst off our heads.. much love, Stefan, Channel Islands.
There are no discounts here in Canada except for one small chain that discounts on two days of the week. Here gas prices go up overnight and slow to come down.
i assume those hadr drives in that server were probably part of a raid array but i didn't see a raid card
I suspect the AT machines will be 386SX, 30mb hard drive, 640k or maybe even 1mb of RAM!(remember HIMEM.SYS?
) Running DOS 3.3. There should be a 5 1/4 " floppy capable of 1.2mb disks (high density LOL)
I remember this as this was the specs of my first IBM clone in 1991, after 7 yrs on C64 and C128. Thanks for your entertaining/informative vids Richard
486 with 128Mb ram and 10 base T network ( i'm still running a DH77 Mb with I3 cpu as my main server and workstation!) Had a bios card from micro probe which I tossed in the bin because I didn't think I would need it any more; how wrong was I!
Happy new year Richard
Might need someone friendly at the Tip mate... Its a funny cycle with PCs, they are the best, then they are junk, then they are Retro cool.
I bought a computer in 2001. It stopped working in 2011. I didn't bother to try to figure out why. I just purchased a new one. Yesterday I took the cheap Chinese HEC 300 LRPT PS of out of that computer case (never touched it for almost 12 years) and connected the green and black wire together and switched it on. It works fine, like nothing ever happened.😁
SO. People are saying that because they wouldn't buy them. Doesn't mean someone else doesn't buy them. They want to see your items sold. List them and show us your stuff sells. And That will keep people quiet
That server probably cost about £5k back in the day, not sure on IBM hardware but I was buying similar poweredge stuff back in the day for that kind of thing. I used DDS (DAT) for backups on servers in the late 90s / 2000s. Note sure what you would do with some an old server now, or why anyone would one it, not particularly useful I would say, as parts maybe the best thing to repair old hardware that someone may still be using.
The CPU fans on many of the gigabyte boards tend to do that until the temperature of the CPU goes up.
I picked up two beastly heavy workstations by Fujitsu Siemens from a thrift store for $8 each, so it ended up being $4 a server because it had a half off sticker on them. I gave one to my son and parted out the other. It was also a dual Xeon socket 604 board. I sold the motherboard within 24 hours for $104! That was the most I ever made reselling thrift store computer stuff. I kept the behemoth case and will mod it someday to build a custom retro system out of it.
This is exactly what I am talking about 🙂
1:41 Looks like a quantum bigfoot (5.25") HDD
16:46 please try to make a habit of replacing RTC CMOS battery and start motherboard with the battery.
Here with that MSI is not the case, but there are boards that require rtc battery to post. I had two cases in my life where PC ATX motherboard, and laptop motherboard won't post when the RTC Battery voltage is below 2.80. Just think about that - 2.75-2.70 instead of 3.0 and then no post. Very strange -but there are, that kind of motherboards.
That is why it is good to have a habit to always start from good battery.
i live in wales and its like that every single time for fuel and for food etc where everyone panic buys and leaves nothing for others
21:10 You forgot about that swollen capacitor, which you spotted on the beginning (left down).
it probably is for frost usb 2.0 supply voltage. Once I had similar issue and the mouse (connected to front usb) wasn't working right.
But anyway if you have issues with post/boot, and you have swollen capacitors close to chipset or apg/PCI-E, this could be a reason.
They would suck the pumps dry LoL
i noticed there was no cmos battery.
Richard you are doing fine when they sold on ebay for that then they sold for that and it be worth around that money.... with that said it is worth what some one is wanting to pay for it .. can be more can also be less you could also go to another site to see what they go for there .... but you will always have some whiners that have their panties to bloody tight and there is no pleasing them .... love your channel
Fuel is very cheap in the canaries compared to the UK
Gonna guess at a 40mb MFM HD in that old AT PC
Old PC tech always has a value to someone...
So, I got a bunch of stuff I would like to learn how to repair(currently I got a Ti4200 that's artefacting), and it seems you got the stuff. But, you got a lot of vids. Where do I start from?
Here in Poland there would be panic for sure. The day of the Russian attack on Ukraine people went completely mad, the fuel prices went up a dozen percent in a day, many ATMs ran out of cash, and generally everybody was talking about that (to my disgust, I refuse to litter my head with things I have 0 controll over).
1:40 Quantum Bigfoot HDD? 😀
Yep it is 😁
The beige box on outro is sporting a old 10m network card, probably a Realtek clone, so likely is anything from a 286 to a 486DX, as that is about the era those cards were popular. Probably also has 16M of RAM as well, though it could be as low a 4M, possibly even SIMM ones. Still got a 386SX motherboard in the garage, that I was using as a controller machine, using a program running in GWBasic, and using a parallel port card as output, to bit bash the interface to the industrial machines. Worked well for around 10 years as the controller, and the cost was zero, as all the parts used were scrap machines I got for free, or saved from the scrap yard.
You will find out soon as Part Two is ready ,and scheduled for publication 10am (GMT) Saturday 7th Jan 🙂
the ati rage xl graphicscard is dated on the chip 0335 = 2003 week 35 and on the pcb 0342 = 2003 week 42
I agree that operating systems (well, Windows at least) is getting bloated. I use a 2009 Asus netbook with 16GB SSD with Windows XP for my laser engraver and man, that thing opens folders instantly. Only after this experience you realize how slow everything in Windows 10 has become.
Fifteen cores and 31GB will have the Spyware and Trojans working fine. one core and 1GB for you and your application.
To name just one: Onedrive integration. How many people use it out of those Windows 10 users.
you might want to check the price of that server fully assembled with drives. servers go for a chunk of change becasue even old ones make decent nas drives.
@MrTGuru a "proper" nas is an rtos computer with limited capabality. one built from a server has infinate more possibility.
@MrTGuru an both my dell server whicvh are nasses cost a lot less then a half decent nas
@MrTGuru i guessed it's age by the fact it uses ddr 1. i refuse to use conventional nasses anymore as in my experience, if a part goes wrong, replacing said part is often difficult and just as often impossilbe. they do not contrsuct them to be repairable. servers, even retired ones are a different matter
@@frankbaron1608 ,or you plug in a SSD drive in the USB port of your router, and Tadaaaaaa, your NAS is ready and consumes almost no extra power compared to a real NAS or ancient PC repurposed as a NAS.
@@BjornV78 i'm rederring to a proper nas. a real one. :P
Manana is difficult by me in South Africa, because we have African Time, and that saying of "tomorrow' is difficult to convey, as really nothing has that sort of urgency.
However the fuel price is adjusted once a month, up or down ( generally up) so there definitely is a big uptick in the number of people putting fuel in when it goes up, and a big lull when it goes down, and it generally is announced the Friday before, and changes on the Tuesday evening at midnight, so at Wednesday morning it has changed. So that Friday till Tuesday you see more people putting fuel in, and the rush is Tuesday around 5PM, when all suddenly realise the price is going up, and rush to fill up. I just will go during the weekend, and fill up at a garage where I get points back, because the price of petrol is regulated and fixed, while diesel has a maximum price regulated. So to get any discount I go to one of 2 chains where another card gives rewards, not much, but still it does help. Not going anywhere just up the road to the local garage, poor rewards, but if I am out the other chain with better rewards scheme. Not paying the third one for the privilege of getting my own money back though.
LOL I think mostly we say 'Tranquillo, mañana mañana...' for the same reason - multiple tomorrows are likely to pass before it occurs
So when you sell things on Ebay, do you sell it to someone abroad? What is the postage then? Cannot imagine the postage being low enough and the demand being high enough to make this work. How long does it usually take before you sell the item at the price you estimate?
Ahh yeah so I do live in a bit of a backwater. I show the prices on ebay UK because whenever I go over I just fill the suitcase full of the most valuable stuff and sell it from there. On the sold ebay listings I show in the videos you can see the postage the buyer paid on the listings, have a look.
PCI-X was a 32- / 64 bit bus
Richard ... why not go with a Ryzen system for the recording pc ? OBS works better on a Ryzen system then an intel one or are you a intel fanboy??? the ryzen cpu's from second generation and up are better then intel when it comes to computing and compression loads...
I got the i7-7700K plus motherboard (working) from the car boot sale a couple of months ago for €35, it's on one of my videos. Likewise with the 2x 8GB DDR4. It seems most sensible to use it. My current i7-4790 system (The CPU also came from the car boot) works fine for recording, but I want to try live streaming, therefore I need a decent GPU to do the real time video compression and a bit more cpu power won't hurt either. An RTX 2070 OC 8Gb Super fits that bill just fine, and the price was OK for a used working one. so at this point I just decided to upgrade the whole PC using what I've got. Live Repair streaming on LER coming later this month on Sundays, and I have another related project in the pipeline starting March 2023 😉
what's that post analyzer you use?

Lucky you. In Canada, an oil producer, our (useless) government adds massive taxes on our fuel...
ah. there was a raid card.
This is getting out of hand Rich :p
Is that thing at 1:40 an old MFM hard drive?
i always spread the heatsink compound thinly over the sriface of the cpu with a bit of cardboard. it makes sure the heat distributes evenly.
Be aware that these old mb’s probably are sold with cpu and ram on them😮
It’s worth is what anyone will buy it for. If its too expansive people wont buy if its too cheap they buy immediately.
Heya, oke let me gues I think it 's a 486 DX4 100 with 32 MB ram and a ate hdd 30 G
Richard, did you realize that you have a sticker with a bar code on the CPU? This is no bueno for cooling 😀
P.S.> Don't forget to replace the bulged capacitor on the 845PE MSI board
Yeah, fortunately it wasn't me who put it there LOL. The 845P will return soon
@@LearnElectronicsRepair Yeah a bit of IPA Magic will do the trick and remove it.
Here in Pennsylvania USA, people freak out for almost anything...3 snowflakes fall -go to store and get bread and milk and stuff. Gas prices are ridiculous, and if its said one station has it for somewhat cheaper, there will be lines forever, and with the second highest tax on gas (petrol for you other guys) in the US, its fairly high to begin with
Out of interest how much is diesel or petrol (do you call both of them gas?) I guess you would have to convert to price per liter if you pay buy the gallon so we could compare.
As an aside I once saw a photo of a large sign at a USA petrol station and restaurant/snack bar. It said...
*EAT HERE AND GET GAS*
That is really really funny to a Brit 😂
€1.3 for diesel? And 14% discount on that? Here in Sweden diesel is €3.2 and petrol is €2
yeah it's €1.35 for diesel but we no longer get the 14% discount. That's in the town here, on the motorway services it is cheaper by about 5 cents / liter
whoever says they are worth nothing is ignorant of the retro scene and interest in working AGP mobos . So then why are they watching an electroncs repair videos - maybe they can go and troll something else
