LOVE this. Sadly folk groups like the Corries and the Dubliners are a thing of the past. And that is something to be greatly regretted. A song that is both a music and a history lesson. Great stuff..
Unfortunetly I will never be able to see them live. :( This is what youtube is for, to me, to keep peoples spirits alive like this. great music and proud to be Scottish, James, Aberdeen - Scotland :)
im scottish, 35 years old and i love modern music loads ... but i will always love scottish folk especially the corries i remember being a teenager and there show being on bbc scotland every saturday it just great ...
My Granny's favourite video was a Corries compilation, and I remember this particular song from it. Haven't seen this since before she died, 11 years. Didn't expect to find this. Excellent.
I'm English and I think Scottish music is fabulous, also the Scottish fighting spirit, but one thing worries me: is enough being done to keep alive Scottish culture? How about Gaelic? Why is nobody making comments in gaelic here? Seriously, you lose such a lot by losing a language. If the Israelis could revive hebrew, then surely the Scotts (and Welsh) can do the same for their languages.
General Hugh McKay (1640-1692) was commander-in-chief of the Williamite (Government) forces in Scotland. They were also known as the Covenanters, and they marched against the Jacobites. His forces largely came from the Scottish Lowlands but also included professional Highland soldiers who fought against their close relatives. Williamite means William III of Orange
The song is about a battle during the late 17th century civil war in Scotland. Dundee, He was known to his supporters as Bonnie Dundee. His support came from the Catholic Highland Clans (mostly from Clans Cameron, Donald, Stuart and McLean) , and his army were known as the Jacobites. Coming from Inverness over the Corrieyairack and Drumochter Passes,
In short. Its about a Jacobite victory over the British army. The Jacobites wanted to the Catholic monarchy of Scotland to rule the British throne. The British army wanted the Protestant English monarchy to rule the British throne. Both sides had followers from Scotland, England and Ireland. It was almost like a civil war.
@superstratboy The man you wanted to follow, was Bill Millin, the last Scottish Piper to lead troops into battle, a true hero, who marched in front of the troops playing and unarmed. It is true that the Bagpipes can inspire Scottish troops to greater endeavours; why else would the English hang a a Piper after the '45 for using an "instrument of war"? And why were Scottish troops called "The Ladies from Hell" in WWI by the Germans?
There is only about 3 Gaelic schools in Glasgow. My cousin went to one, she speaks Gaelic fluently and shes only 9. Up in the hebridean islands, all the road signs are in Gaelic, just like Ireland :)
Has anybody visted killie/cran. Like countless others i stood and said never ,no way did he jump that. But then again if you,ve got a number of mad heelanders after you with their claymores, maybe just maybe.Lovley place though.
Someone commented here a few years ago, and I believe correctly, that this video is from 1987, not 1975!!! I never saw the Corries live but look at the youtube videos from the 21st anniversary show in 1981 and it seems clear.
@1brutaldeath Actually the Scottish Estates themselves threw James of the throne, branded him a traitor, and offered the throne to Mary and William. William wasn't loved but neither was James.
there was no jacobites until the english lords got rid of James 7th ( 2nd of england) to replace him by the dutch king william. It was not the jacobites wanting the catholics to rule, it was the english protestants not wanting the catholics or rome to rule Britain. All british folk should have been jacobites, no foreign person should have took the crown. And then there was king George the german that could not even speak english. Jacobites also from Spain and France.
im a scot and all i want is indapendace for us but the facts are that it breaks even, whats we give the english they give us back so that cannie be used in the argument
@ac130ugunship Aye, we did - but for naught. Tribal peoples cannot win against the organized armies of feudal states. If we'd learned the lesson Vercingetorix tried to teach at Alesia, we'd have beaten the Romans. But the clans never did learn to put their differences aside and unite.
@TheAndroid4 its such a tough fight ...having to take on traitors and self servers....but most like in central belt only care about their state benefits and keep voting Labour :(...Scotland only part of UK that grew during the recession period
@farmerloon Aye mannie if your going to post this sort of thing, then at least learn to spell and not let the rest of us down by not being able to spell your own nationality.

God Bless You Sir. This day forevermore we shall lament. The First and most ardent of Jacobites.
This is the real Scotland. fantastic. Scotland forever!!
I Love this song>>I try to sing it when I am Gassed.....happy New Year to All Corrie Fans, where Ye may be......happy 2012/
Bonnie Dundee,Graham of Claverhouse, was mortally wounded in the hour of his victory and lies buried in the crypt of old Blair church.
Great song- one of the four songs I remember from my very early childhood, along with Johnny lad and two songs by other bands.
I Remenber watching this a lot years ago on TV!!
This has got to be my favourite Iain . Thanks ,thelma ( in canada)
This is fantastic! I had never heard this version before, only Big County's, which is on here. Quite a difference, but both worth listening to.

loof is an old word for "hand" so when they sing ye better kiss king williams loof it is meaning pledging allegiance to him.
claverhouse was a great great man who knew many many secrets of the temple and the order of sion .
Has anybody visted killie/cran. Like countless others i stood and said never ,no way did he jump that. But then again if you,ve got a number of mad heelanders after you with their claymores, maybe just maybe.Lovley place though.
the first two verses of this song are by The great Robert Burns

just remember it's because your better than them you have a history behind you
We want our FREEDOM! It's the only way forward.
not only is it good folk music but part of killiekrankie (spelling i know) was actualy written By Robert Burns
@1brutaldeath Actually the Scottish Estates themselves threw James of the throne, branded him a traitor, and offered the throne to Mary and William. William wasn't loved but neither was James.
Brilliant idea it4490g!! can I join you? Cheers from France!
Tis was actually the 1987 BBC seris.
Damn few, and they're all dead!
I wonder what Britain would be like today had the Stuarts kept the crown.
brilliant idea it4490g!! can i join you? cheers from France!
@alex13499 I think it had a lot to do with religion, not just nationality.
Anyone notice Del boy and Rodney came all the way up to here to hear this?
katie never bother what thay say one day scotland will be free
@Terenceish Yes, that's because we are all the same......Jeez
I wish I had the honour of fighting with the Jacobites.
Fighting for their religion, freedom and their basic human rights!
Whoo's getting the beer? That's a true Scottish question. I am a Jock in Weston-super-Mare, and having a party. 4 years so far and counting
@farmerloon What does that have to do with the video?
@gert83 Your jokin'. Big Country don't sound like they could fight their way out of the proverbial wet paper bag.

@pirbird14 Which 'clans' do you think were about in Roman times?
Fowk may think we're defeated... but we will rise..
our day will come when we build a big wall at berwick
@ac130ugunship Aye, we did - but for naught. Tribal peoples cannot win against the organized armies of feudal states. If we'd learned the lesson Vercingetorix tried to teach at Alesia, we'd have beaten the Romans. But the clans never did learn to put their differences aside and unite.

@katiie641 I totally agree with you. We don't give a shit as long as we make friends along the way...UP THE ENGLISH
Lynn From Scotland
That is a foolish point of view. Scotlands cultures expand well past the "catholic" and "presbetarian" mantras. I suggest you read some history.
@Islandretreat absolute bollocks. the normanisation of Scotland had nothing to do with religion.
can ye no just enjoy the music. Take your political view's elsewhere
wheres the bigotry read what you writting quote LOWLAND PRODS is that not bigotry too you
thank fuck, someone else with a sane view!
(im not interested in football or religion and think the link between the two is quite pathetic)
