Great job. I enjoy when repaired equipment is painted before returning to the customer. To me, it shows pride in workmanship. When I had work done, it impressed me so that I'd be a returning customer. BTW, honesty is still the best policy.

Repainting THIS type (piece) of equipment seems to me like waste of time and utter frills - most of the paint will be stripped the moment the bucket is put back to use. I'm not against painting repaired stuff "as such", it's this particular instance when it is, from practical point of view, a total waste of time and money. But then this might be done cuz the customer is, erm, "tad peculiar" in his choices and preferences - "no, don't replace cracked ears" (although it would be the best choice in this case), so maybe he enjoys freshly painted buckets too, who knows...

A tremendous amount of quality work! I enjoyed this video as I do every one you post. Couple questions come to mind: 1) How many people do you currently have working for you? And 2) What do you guess are your personal total number of hours spent working in all aspects of your business per week.
I’m guessing it’s a huge number given that you’re out when the sun’s coming up and still out way past when it sets not to mention the weekends that you’re working. And, owning a much smaller mobile welding business myself, I know there’s a ton of hours spent in getting the work, parts and materials lined up as well as all the associated paperwork that nobody (except your family) will ever see.

This is so Weird Mr Greg..., I was thinking of the time I overshot a bore, rushing on the lathe,
2" plate by 24" diameter, and had to do a bore weld on our converted 30" lathe we
only used for welding, we could slow down to 1/4 rpm.....anyway, I was wondering
if you ever had that happen and 2 minutes later, Boom
31:00, you had the same issue.....thanks for sharing that, we are all human, we try and
not do this, it makes us better in the future......onward and upward......great rebuild.....
all that gouging of cracks was insane and the amount of filler it took....

    700 amps, 3/8 carbons. That's playing hardball.
At the risk of sounding elitist, I wish you would make a video now and then that doesn't cater to the armchair observer crowd. Us old timers can see exactly what the job is and are watching to observe your expertise. We don't need wordy explanations. We know you need new boss's with X OD and Y ID and it's a couple of hours cooling your jets with the line borer. Of the greatest interest is what your experience is on display and what measures if any you will undertake to prevent this mess in the future. ->Never discount the savvy of the old timers like OFW and their bag of tricks.
Mistakes? We never make mistakes!!! If you swallow that one I've got some lovely swamp land for sale a few miles west of San Francisco.
One thing I wonder about. What would the condition of those welds be in, what cracks would have developed, it is had been stick 7018 instead of the hot glue gun? How about cutting into the ears about .125 and recessing the bosses? Then the weld wouldn't have to handle all the force? Stick weld can go down past the recess to solid parent metal.

Certification then required X-ray and scarfed flat, vertical and overhead 6010. 7018 was acceptable but 6010 best demonstrated how well you could weld.
Had I been on that bucket I'd have left some MIG metal as tacks and let 6010 get the job done. Maybe 7018 final passes to make it look pretty., Welding has come a long way since then.

as a fabricator my philosophy was, the only people that don't make mistakes, don't do anything. NASA makes mistakes. another thing i went by was, a good fabricator will build on his/her mistakes and the end result will be better than the original attempt would have been.

Hey brother, run a faster feed rate on your lathe turning and it'll break the chip for you, that way you don't get bird nests of long stringy chips.

Great job on another interesting fabrication and repair job. But most importantly thank you for not playing that obnoxious background music 👍

Nice balance of activities!!! Gee 107 degrees, I've noticed you have a "swamp cooler" fan unit that is huge, no wonder. For shame, ya made a mistake, I won't send you anymore work!!!! LOL I'm moved to confess, I made a mistake in my bathroom remodel job. I installed cement board on the ceiling but won't be putting tile on the ceiling and was a bear getting the darn board up there over my head.. After two shoulder replacements I find my extended reach doesn't have
    the strength it once had.
How much paint did it take to paint that beast???? I admire your attention to detail, such as painting to finish the project.

I knew what line boring was but never had seen it done and didn’t think about building up the worn metal inside of the bore.
I’m curious as to how long line or align boring has been around and how were the bores built up before wire feed or if they even were or were new pin bosses just manufactured or did the welder fill it up with stick and then bore?
Regardless I enjoyed watching thank you.

That’s a great question. I wonder that all the time. I imagine the cutting came first then bore welding some time later. I have seen bores welded by hand with stick. It can be done. It’s slow and probably irritating to do.

if you pull the tool through when boring rather than push you have less need for a centre bearing anyway and should get a cleaner result as the bar is under tension and not potentially bending slightly under compression.

How do you go about selecting the right grade of steel for these projects?

A lot comes from experience and being in the industry for so long. You can also sometimes get the manufacturer to tell you.

How much oversize do you cut the bosses for the pin fit?

.002 then about 20 seconds with a fine sand paper wheel. So they end up .003-.004 over.
