Very nice footage Ed! Had to cringe a bit at them all being led down by the piper though...

Any idea why they didn't use the flagship 216 loco?

216 was losing power and previously failed during a test run. It was not trusted to run the first service. It has since undergone maintenance work and I hear it will be running it tomorrow.

Why couldn't Irish Rail do this.

I guess they were trying to reduce costs by using DMUs instead. It is more costly to have locomotives (time and staff for loco release) longer turnaround times. Better reliability can be achieved with DMUs as well, if one DMU engine fails the entire train will not fail as with a loco hauled service.

European Rail I know that, the point I was trying to make IR with the resources they have at their disposable a luxury train similar to Belmond offering the same service linking up with CIE Tours International offering combined tours throughout Ireland.

+Desmond Gleeson They probably wouldn't have the same expertise and experience as Belmond who have an established customer base and experience in the field. Add to that Irish Rail is loosing money, if the service failed to make a profit the subvention would not be allowed to be used. Belmond could change the bogies and easily transfer it to the UK to use on one of there other services, if things don't work out here.

European Rail How much money are they loosing. And have they any plans to left rail between Waterford to Rosslaire and closure of Limerick Junction Waterford.

The Rosslare to Waterford line is not going to be lifted. However, it is continuing to be downgraded and is now classified as an engineers siding. As of this summer locomotives are no longer permitted to travel the line. As for the Limerick Jn to Waterford line IMO it would have been closed already if they were planning to shelve it. It seems to have survived the downturn. IE is loosing appox 20 million per annum. I will try and find the exact number for you, it is still a very large amount even after the government subvention is taken into account.
