Dragon Ball is known for shaking things up, from the introduction of energy attack to the shift in focus to martial arts and even the reveal that Goku was an alien. Any way you look at it, Dragon Ball has never been afraid to try something new, especially with its characters. Take, for example, Vegeta, a character who started out as a ruthless villain in the Saiyan Saga, became an anti-hero in the Frieza Saga and the Cell Saga, and eventually became a hero by the time of the Buu Saga and Dragon Ball Super.
Vegeta isn’t the only example of a massive character shift in the Dragon Ball franchise. There are tons of examples of personality changes, retcons, appearance changes and character growth all throughout the series. From Goku’s adult appearance in the Piccolo Jr. saga to Future Trunks’ new look in Dragon Ball Super and even Bulma’s maturity throughout the years, there are a lot of instances of Dragon Ball changing its characters and, in this video, we look at some of the biggest character changes in the franchise.

Kid trunks’ hair is still purple in order to differentiate between the kid and adult versions. But I don’t see how you can’t tell the difference with just their heights
Future trunks hair is purple because he's not from the future but a different reality other wise his reality would've been changed immediately sence tey had destroyed the Android's and cell that's also why he couldn't guess the actual amount of Android that attacked

4:17 actually the first time Goku was ever mention to be an alien was on the original dragonball back when he was a kid, on the assault of the red ribbon army on muscle tower. Major Metralion, some kind of android, scanned Goku and the result was that Goku was an alien.
And this was actually on the 1/4 of the series (around episode 30 if I'm not mistaken). But it was never talked about it again until Z, when Raditz came to earth and confirmed it.
Even though Toriyama hadn't thought of the Saiyans yet, he still foreshadowed it alot.

@@spidoggo182 the animal people are human. There was a company in the Dragon Ball universe that sold I believe "pills" that turned you to an animal. People used them for parties and what not, but they were supposed to be temporary transformations, and they became permanent.

Bardock Father of Goku is technically cannon because Frieza has a flashback when he first meets Goku on Namek
My mindset is that he canonically looked like he did during the special but the events of Broly happened.
Also in the begining of Dragon Ball Kai there's a flashback to Bardock Father of Goku
The problem with the flashbacks is that they're from re-editing the show to fit more for American audiences

It's really Tora's headband. Bardock wore it to his final battle as a way to remember his fallen comrade. Yeah, Tora wore it tied around his arm for whatever reason. It only looks red when Bardock wears it because it's blood-soaked. In this version, Bardock's not around to see Tora's death. So Tora's scarf stays on whatever planet he was on when Dodoria and his commandos killed him.

CV Anims I always considered Bardock, The father of Goku and The History Of Trunks as cannon since they structurally made sense with the shows timeline. Im pretty sure most if not everybody felt the same

Absolutely great video. I really enjoyed this.
Two things should be noted, though. In Dragon Ball, Goku was 12 years old, a pre-teen. In the dub version, they nerfed his age, and stated that he was five years old. This misled fans to believe that he was only a little older than a toddler when he first met Bulma. Because of that, there is some confusion, for some people, of adult Goku's actual age. Especially when you see how small he was.
In Dragon Ball Super, kid Trunks is 14, and Goten is 13. They're also small due to their Saiyan race, in which Saiyan's physically age slower than humans do. (Take Cabba, for example. He's 19 years old. But physically, he looks as though he is 12) They also stay in their prime until they are 80 years old. Because of their small height and weight, kid Trunks and Goten appear as though they haven't aged since they were 7 and 8 years old. This also leads some fans to be confused about their age in Super, with many believing that they are still little boys, instead of actual teenagers.
On another note, even though Marron, the daughter of Android 18 and Krillin , wasn't included in this video, in Super, she is nine years old. But, due to Krillin's genetics, she is much smaller than the average nine year old. (I think that some fans might be confused about her age as well, for the simple fact that her mother carries her around like a freaking three year old. That, and the way Marron speaks is more suited for a three year old, instead of a girl that's going on ten.)
I wasn’t a fan of how Bardock wasn’t wearing his headband in the Dragon Ball Broly movie. Then again, that probably means that his teammates weren’t killed by Dodoria in this canon.

All these character changes is what makes the dragon ball series so engaging makes it feel like your part of the unfolding story it wouldn't be the same without these things
People always refer to Goku as a little kid in Dragon Ball but he was actually a pre-teen so his growth spurt makes sense. Sure the growth spurt was pretty drastic but it was also demonstrated with Gohan between Cell Saga and Buu Saga which was only a short few years apart and with Trunks between the end of Z and the beginning of GT (which may not be cannon now but it was when it was released)
We definitely did have extremely strong signs goku was an alien. It was strongly hinted at all throughout the dragon ball manga, even having a robot's perspective read "Cannot compute alien data" when looking at goku at one point.
I think the dragonball couples are actually quite well done:
Goku and ChiChi
ChiChi is hyper aggressive because anything less than that and they'd never see Goku (he's literally always trying to go off to train/fight)
Gohan and Videl
Gohan was there for Videl and made her life easier. She had no reason to be aggressive.
Vegita and Bulma
Bulma is aggressive at times, mostly due to Vegita almost always training. However when something needs to be done, even errans, Vegita understands the structure of family and is there for them. This is why Bulma is also calm. This couple is like the middle ground of the above two.

Trunks and Mei
They are both supportive of each other from the start. Sort of like the later half of Gohan/Videl.
Yes Frieza and his army did wear those clothes but its saiyan clothing not Frieza clothing
About Broly. Is is accurate to call his re-characterization a retcon when he was originally never canon to begin with?
Broly himself is not a retcon the story of Bardock, the age of both Goku and Vegeta, and the age Goku was sent to Earth is a retcon. HUGE overlook on their part
Because its still the same character. Cannon or not they just take this character and change it. It wasnt even inspired by the filler movie, they Just take him and change him. It's not new stuff, they didnt erase old brolly form existence.

- World Martial Arts Tournament Combatants

Tien and Krillin were made great again by adding them into the tournament of power. But Yamcha will probably stay weak. Can't ass pull everyone. And it's up to Goku if he wants to revive them with the Dragonballs or get them from hell...I'd like to see that but well.

If Bardock sent Goku to Earth to save him from the sayians planet being destroyed then why did Raditz say that Goku was supposed to destroy the Earth to destroy all humans?
Simply,super was a nonsense that came to empty wallets and ruin much of what had been built in z.
Probably because Raditz didn't know better. Not to mention that Bardock died almost right after by going against Frieza so there wasn't really a chance to tell Raditz what really happened.
Since Raditz was alive, he was likely stationed elsewhere or on a separate mission at the time of the Saiyan annihilation by Frieza. Afterwards, Raditz was either told a lie to explain the loss of the Saiyan race, or he was a devoted following of Frieza regardless and accepted the act genocide.
With that said, it's very likely that USUALLY, they'll send Saiyans to other planets to wipe out life and sell the planet... so putting it all together: Raditz very likely WRONGLY deduced that Goku was sent to kill all life on the planet just based on standard procedure. He didn't know their father sent Goku to escape and survive.

He was still there for an instant....and Frieza even flashes back in a memory of when he's destroying Planet Vegeta...and Bardock is right in front of him giving his speech and furthermore...it looked like he'd been fighting a lot of Friezas men.

Here are three DB character changes, I wanna add:
1. Ox-King:
The first time Goku, Bulma and Oolong met him, he was a very fearsome and violent person, killing people just to protect his burning castle and treasures. After Gokuand Muten-Roshi helped him extinguishing the fire (and the castle), he changed his personality and also his appearance later on. He started to become a nice person and a lovable grandfather.
2. Prince Pilaf, Mai and Shu:
The Pilaf Gang has been a dreaded enemy, although they often were clumsy, confused and not very effective. In DBS, they were kids - WHYEVER - and started living in Bulma's home as her assistents. Still lurking for the Dragonballs but without any success.
Especially Mai got some drastically changes when it comes to her future self.
3. Lunch:
Lunch was a character who was introduced very very early (only few episodes after Kuririn (Krillin)). And in DBZ she eventually disappeared for no reason - at least it is not explained in the Manga.
Akira Toriyama said in an interview that he simply forgot about Lunch. That's all!
So the most drastically changed character is Lunch: From being there to being not there!

Best anime
A major change was that in Dragonball half of the population were made of humanoid animals like wolf or Tiger people. Fast forward to Dragonball Z and there are no traces to be found of non human characters. Even Oologn and Puar got used less and less.
The only exception was that during the final Genkidama, we saw Gillian and his friends giving up their energy once Goku asked them for it.
Fast forward to DB Super and some animals have returned, like that wolf mayor. But not nearly to the extent of original Dragonball.
Oh and blonde Lunch got changed quite a bit too (and was forgotten later on)

The DB Super Broly movie also retconned Gokus original reason for being sent to Earth. In Broly he was only sent there because Bardock knew Frieza was up to something and he wanted Goku to go somewhere where Frieza wouldn't find him whereas Raditz told him he was sent to Earth to conquer it

Imo bardock always looks like a total badass
Animation being a sort of "visual artistic interpretation" always allows me to easily forgive any inconsistencies. In animation, sometimes things are "Warped" for a dramatic presentation. A smaller character is made to look SUPER TINY in comparison to a big character who is made to loom HUGE over them. Especially during dynamic action shots.
Then in normal dialogue scenes...they may look much closer in size.
So things like character color palettes and designs changing, size changing, hair color changing...body type/height changing....to me it just all comes with the territory. This is a HIGHLY stylized and artistic visual story. What changed the most was that old characters were left out. If you watch the first DB to the end of Saiyan saga, you'll feel that the old pals are useless. I'm glad Tien and master Roshi were in the tournament in Super.
