    1080 seems good to go, I know higher resolutions are the future but the higher resolutions take hell lot of time to edit and render not to forget the storage time and costs.

    Both have there place. I think people are used to bad 1080p like what RUclips delivers and also alot of DSLR's. If you ever have used a good cinema camera, the 1080p out of it looks stunning, not far off from 4k at all surprisingly.
    I used to shoot everything in 4k with my Panasonic G85 because of the bad 1080p, but since I have had my GH5s I have used the 1080p in a lot of projects because it looks great. Saved me a lot of time for smaller projects as well as I don't need proxies.
    One thing I would note, if you are using 1080p is to upscale to 4k when delivering to youtube. As the compression is massive!

    There is also another input to take into account when deciding to shoot 1080 or 4K: the max framerate. Most drones allow only 24-25 or 30 fps, whixh, I believe, results in really jerky footage, unless you are shooting landscape while moving slowly. 50 fps allows you to shoot moving scenes really smoothly. Another hint if you want to reduce jerks is to use and ND filter in order to allow longer exposure (1/50 second)

  • @ShawnTheRazor
    @ShawnTheRazor 7 лет назад

    Sometimes the stuttering is caused by the video codec. Computers have a hard time decompressing the video as you scrub or play it. A good way to test if this is the case would be to convert the video to a lossless compression format and then edit with it. (the hugest downside to this is the size of the video files, but you will usually find they scrub and play really nicely).

    You've raised some interesting points about the whole full HD versus 4K thing. Over here in the UK, our mainstream broadcasters (BBC1, ITV, Channel 4, Ch 5 etc) aren't transmitting in 4K. BBC shoot in either 1080, 2K or 4K for nature and wildlife footage but it will be down scaled for normal broadcast. Also since not everyone has super fast home broadband capable of streaming UHD/4K video let alone owning a 4K tv, then a lot of 4K footage is pretty pointless or it has to be compressed to hell and ultimately looks a bit 'fake' looking. The decision to shoot in 1080p or UHD comes down to the customer and the job requirement. Ultimately when you're making videos for other people, it's far more important in the real world to have smooth streaming quality HD than an over-processed lower frame rate or stuttering 4K video any day. I have no doubt that 4K will become mainstream but not just yet.

    Hi Ed, great video, and this is also something I am pondering about. I am not a professional videographer, just shoot some hikes with my dog. I recently purchased the Osmo pocket, and it has the ability to shoot 4k, but I am still not sure if I will use it and what the benefits are. Not sure if this relates to this topic, but everybody in the Osmo pocket community, wants to shoot 4k, because it is sharper, but then also adds ND filters to get the cinematic motion blur... this sounds to me as a contradiction, Shoot 4k for sharper image, but then add a filter to blur it up.

    For me the only reason to use 4K is if you want to do post zoom/pan etc. As output 1080p looks plenty good! On my 65" TV and normal viewing distance i would probably not be able to see the difference if not really trying hard and having the same source switched between resolution right after the other. When on my computer i never go full screen anyways. And on a phone... well no need to comment i guess ;)

    Hi Ed
    I was having the same problem, the more cuts and edits I made the slower the video would get. Adding sound created more slowness and then slow mo or speeding up created even more stuttering and jerkiness during editing. I had good hardware but the 4K was slow as crap on Premiere Pro. As someone else mentioned I found the solution which is the Proxy option. It eliminates all the problems. Yes the computer takes a bit of time at the start to make the lower res proxy files but after that you can edit with the low res 1080P clones and they play the video smoothly. The final product is made using the original 4K footage so it looks the same when your finished. You can toggle between the two while working if you ever need to.
    Check out this video. A guy named Svavar and Robbyg on Mavicpilots bought the solution to my attention.
    helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/how-to/proxy-media.html
    Peace !!

  • @GaryBeilby
    @GaryBeilby 7 лет назад +1

    I always shoot at the highest res & frame rate each camera can support. Sometimes this is 4k, but not if I want a higher frame rate for example. So end result is there is always some 1080p footage in any project I'm working on, so at the end of the day I'm always exporting final output to 1080p. But that gives me the ability to digitally cut and zoom as Ed mentioned. However, he was talking about shooting in 4k and outputting 4k - so I don't get how he says he can do the insets and zooms without quality loss (unless exporting to 1080).
    Shooting at higher res than export size also allows better stabilisation, fine tuning composition and more.
    So I guess what I'm saying is until I can shoot in 8k I can't see me exporting to 4k.

    I think 4K is better ,although my computer is not powerful enough to do any realtime editing things , even in 720P ,but it could handle after the source videos were cached to the low resolution .so the realtime editing is not the problem, it just takes my time to pre render the caches . the disk space I think is the problem really ,there are just two way to solve "buy more huge hardisk" or "delete the used source videos"

      No. yes, not really, and only if you have shit internet.
      4K is important to me to preserve more detail. the room is fine I just throw away useless clips. if you use proxies it's very easy to edit. and I only get max 3Mbps upload and 4K uploads don't take too long.

    Ed, one problem I have with shooting 4K with my Mavic 2 pro is that if I try to export in 1080P my framing of my subject is ruined because the 1080P appears zoomed/cropped. This leads me to believe that you have to know ahead of time which resolution your client is going to use. Because once I shoot in 4K I am on able to export and 1080 P or 2K because both will appear zoomed in and cropped and the subject such as a point of interest video on a home will not be correctly framed. Is there a way around this? Thank you

    I immediately pressed 'like' just because it's a good question, relevant to me as a non 4K camera owner. My quick capsule answer would be though that films/clips that are of their time can have a great deal of charm, and are made to the level/strengths/weaknessesof their medium. Laurel and Hardy lose nothing, by not being in 4K.

    I think 4K is just too much of a gimmick. The manufacturers are just trying to see how many pixels you can push onto the consumer. I think that things like sensor size, lens quality, and color profiles are much more important in terms of creating a great image. People just latch onto whatever is the latest fad regardless of if it is at all practical or necessary. I do some work as a videographer and see people requesting 4K for things that will live on the web and be viewed primarily on people's cell phones and laptops....

    How is it 4 times the size of HD when it's only twice the resolution?

      Twice the resolution is twice vertical and twice horizontal, hence 4x the pixels.

    You actually got it slightly wrong, HD means 720p, FHD is 1080p
    Thanks for the video

    Hi Ed. I have a friend who comes with me when I fly but he doesn't have a QuadCopter or a 4K TV so I would like to shoot some video in 2.7 Will his 1080P TV be able to handle the 2.7 recordings from my Phantom 4 Pro or my Mavic Pro? Thanks so much if you can help.

      Hello, yes his TV should be able to display that. It might even look clearer than regular HD on his tv! If it does look a little too sharp/grainy, he can always try reducing the sharpness of his footage either in editing or from the DJI Go App itself. That's assuming he wants to tune his camera to work best on a 1080 tv.

    What if you edit on a 1080p timeline and then export as 4k? Is this possible? Will you still have the same aliasing problems by doing this?

      Hi David...trying to wrap my mind around how that would go. I think since you've downsized a UHD clip into an HD timeline, you've already reduced the detail at that point...so exporting at 4k will only increase the size of the video. It will not increase the level of detail back to UHD standards. So it may actually help the issue of aliasing, but it's a roundabout way of doing it. Might as well just downsize to 1080 and export at 1080 in that case, or add a very small (like 1 or 2%) blur on a 4k clip exported at 4k to soften it up a hair.
