    Frame rate can have a noticeable effect on the perceived smoothness of slow camera panning shots. The slower the frame rate, the choppier the pan will look, and there's a hidden pitfall those who shoot in 24 fps often encounter. Most monitors and TV's refresh their image at 60 Hz. Since 24 fps does not divide evenly into 60, that 24 fps footage produces an uneven refresh rate when displayed at 60 Hz, which can make slow pans look ragged. To produce the smoothest pans for display on 60 Hz monitors, the best camera frame rates are 60 fps and 30 fps.

      Agreed!! I shoot EVERYTHING in 60fps and then EDIT in a 60fps Timeline. People it’s 2022 so do we really need to be shooting and editing at only 24fps because that’s what they had available in the 1930´s and 40 ‘s with their old metallic mechanical shutters? Many RUclipsrs insist on this traditional way of doing things. We now have the technology to do much better. 24fps has too much choppiness and motion-blur as there are too few frames for the processor to write to. Especially when panning or scenes with lots of motion you know what I’m talking about! I have done many side by side tests with this and that is why I shoot at 60fps and EDIT at 60fps that way your audio is still in sync (everything is real-time not slo-mo) but you have more frames to capture crisp, clear, sharp detail and movement in the scene and especially when you pan!! You still get some nice motion blur. A little motion-blur is natural but fuzzy pixels and stuttering jittery motion when panning at 24p drives me crazy. It’s terrible at accurately depicting motion! Yes your files at 60p are larger, doesn’t bother me…I usually try to stick with the 180 degree rule for shutter so 1-125. I will try using it at 1-60 sec shutter as Gerald Undone suggests to minimized the ‘soap opera effect’. SHOOTING AT 60P is so immersive and life-like (Edit in 60 p though) Try it you’ll see….

      @@LuxuryRumble There are 3 phases of video making. Shooting, editing and publishing. You wanna make sure you use the right fps for ALL phases, shot 24 fps, edit at 24 fps, publish at 24 fps. If you wanna shot at 24 fps, then 24 fps all the way. Same goes for 30 and 60 fps. Nice video Ed. As a point of clarification, the Seinfeld clip you showed was shot on film at 24 fps. When transferred to standard definition video a "3:2 pulldown" was used to convert from 24 to 30 (actually 23.98 to 29.97 at that point). Modern sitcoms are shot digitally at 24 fps.

  • @thomasmaughan4798

    *Important* is to also adjust the shutter speed to nearly match the reciprocal of the frame rate. This blends each frame into the next and you don't see the frames as a series of individual images. 24 frames per second is obviously the worst in this regard; if you shoot 24 frames per second with a 1/500th shutter speed, you will see individual frames of anything that moves, there will be no sense of motion, it becomes "stroboscopic" in a sense.
    IN the case of drone, I use a Neutral Density filter to allow slower shutter speed and this has the effect of smoothing pans but it also blurs the propeller blades if they get in the shot.
    60 frames per second makes wonderful drone video and achieves a nice sense of smooth motion. It is also the case that the video codec understands how to move an image without using a lot of bandwidth. If there's too much movement between frames the motion detector doesn't work and the entire frame will have to be encoded (not using any portion of the previous frame) and that cuts down quality dramatically producing an abrupt transition in quality while panning.

    • @diman4010
      @diman4010 5 лет назад +1

      Yes, it's a good presentation. As all yours, keep it up. But, as always, nothing has been said here about the fact that frame rate should depend on viewers display refresh rate. Which is 60 Hz in most cases. 60 is not dividable to 24 evenly that leads to judder. My "cinematic" experience definitely differs for movies, watched in cinema and for movies, watched home on my PC or laptop. But surprise surprise, I don't watch RUclips videos in cinema theaters. But 24 fps talking head videos looks perfect at 1.25x speed, because 24 * 1.25 = 30, lol. So, 24 fps is the best frame rate for that sort of videos just becase it's perfect for speedups ;D

  • @iancraig

    Thanks for your views on frame rates. I struggle with making decisions regarding this. In the UK, our TV’s work at 25 and 50 and my camera will produce 4k at 25 or HD at 50. So the struggle is ... greater resolution but slightly jittery on camera movement or less resolution with smooth movement. My preference is 50 because I just can’t get past the slightly ‘removed’ feel of 25 and the panning problems. For still stuff though, I guess 25 might be ok and is close to 24 anyway. I just feel that 25 is on the verge of slow/cinematic where in the USA, 30 is significantly faster. So we either have cinematic or lifelike I guess.

      Frame rates and hz refresh rate are a headache ,couldn't understand why my panasonic camcorder 1080p 50fps was so choppy,then i realized the monitor refresh rate was set to 60hz,set it to 50hz all was silky smooth .its a real pain as i have to go into monitor refresh settings on the nivida control panel to change whether or not the type of video framerate is to match,maybe more expensive modern monitors have auto refresh rate like some TVs now do

    You should be paying more attention to shutter speed over framerate. You can upconvert to 60fps without any impact and mix framerates no problem just like this video does, but don't shoot in 60 thinking you can down it to 24 to get the cinematic effect. AFAIK a video editor cannot correctly add motion blur to everything correctly.

  • @JeffChapman
    @JeffChapman 5 лет назад +1

    60fps should be the standard - even for movies we see in theaters. We've been saddled with 24fps since before the talkies came out! 24fps results in terrible blurring during camera pans and makes action scenes almost unwatchable. It's time to evolve.

  • @bodstrup
    @bodstrup 3 года назад

    I just don’t get why one would degrade the image quality by deliberately introducing stuttering and motion blur - when we have these wonderful, sharp cameras. Maybe because I do documentary/site survey type videos, not ‘dreamy movies’. The only reason I can se for going with a low frame rate would be low light conditions when you need a slow shutter speed.
    Wish for 2021: Drone videos not using the term ‘cinematic’ for anything that is not jerky with abrupt turns and stops :-)
    Happy New year, love your channel

    Every movie you ever seen was shot at 24 frames per second with three exceptions. Those exceptions are Oklahoma!, 1955, shot and 30 frames per second. Around the World in 80 Days, 1956, shot at 30 frames per second, and The Hobbit 2012, 2013, 2014, shot at 48 frames per second. This would include the vast majority of hour long television shows which were shot on film at 24 frames per second.

    Growing up shooting on film at 24, I got used to it. So when tape came along, it just looked so flat. I still like 24 because it has a sense of grittiness to it, and as some would say it looks more natural, as when a fast hand motion shows a kind of blur just like someone in front of you shows the same thing if their hand is moving fast.

    sharp, crisp movement does well in sports and action, for normal "movement" the 24fps "long" shutter is much more pleasing. it's how your eyes work, it's more natural. wave your hand in front of your face, you'll see. now move your head to follow the hand, hand is sharp throughout the motion, but the background is blurred. that's how you wanna watch those sports highlights, isn't it.

    If you look at the history of cinema, it has never been dragged into using the latest technology, far from it, it has developed and pioneered new techniques and technologies. If 60fps was "better" (to be defined in a later post), then directors would be demanding it. However they would not have to make much of an argument, because the producers would demand it was made in 60fps, so they could advertise the movie as 60fps, but they would not have to advertise too hard, because (apparently) word of mouth would be the greatest advertisement. This is not happening because it is not "better" (to be defined in a later post). If we consider "art" (which will NOT be defined in a later post), then 24fps is far more pleasant on the eye (even if it is less realistic). If we consider the "worth" of an image, what gives us more reward, 1)A ultra high res photo of a face, 2) a reality drawing of a face, or 3) a portrait in the cubist style ? The "reality" drawings are great to see and to acknowledge the artists skill, but it soon wears off and you are not admiring the drawing itself , but the skill behind it. Give me the painting anyday.

    Oh gosh this is so good. You are quite wright regarding lifelike and cinematic because lifelike is
    soap drama format to me which you dont want for a movie that requires texture and atmosphere to draw us away from everyday life like.
    RE some modern day televisions.
    I get so frustrated when I see a movie that I know is cinematic and yet certain televisions or TV settings rip the heart out of the film replacing 4k clarity which is so sad 😔 😂

    Filming arrows out of bows and crossbows in flight. Anything below 60 fps and the slow motion looks really choppy. 120 fps is better and 240 fps would be great but my software will only save at 144 fps max so, I am not sure if there is an advantage at filming at 240 then saving at 144?. My older cell phone can do slomo at either 1080p 120 fps, or 720p at 240 fps. Also, have seen other comments concerning most computer screens process at 60 fps?

    Yes, these new TVs... we absolutely despise them. Our LG fortunately also has this "game mode" and I think it's either 30 or 24 fps; it is much more crips though which I like, but then we are stuck with that colour profile. I don't get the 60 fps fascination, it's like an obsession for a new toy haha

    • @EdRickerVlogs

      Haha, it's also surprising how many people in the comments here prefer 60fps for movie and television watching. I think they're out of their mind, but it's a personal taste thing I guess.

    7:30 What you say here is the opposite of what I just learned from Gerald Undone video. He recommends to use the interpret footage option in order to solve the jittery problem of dropping 30fps footage into a 24fps sequence, and he advises against doing the opposite (24 in a 30 sequence) as it will be missing frames. Personally, I have to put together a mix of 24, 30, and 60 to create a web background video showing various stage performances and I don't know if I should build it in a 24 or 30 sequence. Thoughts?

  • @bryangl1

    Hey, lower frame rates stem from when movies were on film. The eye percieves flicker below around 48 images per second, but for various reasons movies were originally shot at a lower frame rate and a revolving shutter was arranged to show each 24 fps frame twice. Transferring to TV where screening was 60 images per second involved a complex pull-down showing frames 2 1/2 times (that's putting things simplistically). So in aiming for 24 fps, you are replicating a historic limitation of movies. To my mind, no great virtue.

    • @EdRickerVlogs
      @EdRickerVlogs  5 лет назад

      I recognize the historical reason why 24fps exists, but many people prefer the look even today. 30 and 60 have their place, but 24fps in certain situations is definitely more pleasing to my eye.

      @@EdRickerVlogs Thanks Ed. With, "to my eye" you are confirming this is a subjective opinion, and that's fair enough, we're all entitled to our personal preferences. The comments reveal a range of personal preferences. But note that before the move to non-mechanical projection systems in movie theatres, there was constant research to try and overcome the problems of low frame rates, particularly with very large format film technologies where the sheer mass and inertia of the film made sprocket tear a problem. The aim was to get both a large film frame (area) plus a high frame rate, the object being to get a smoother, sharper, more realistic presentation. My point being that it was considered a higher frame rate would look better to the general public, i.e., 24 fps was a limitation to be overcome in the search to get an optimum cinema experience

      Thanks for watching! Yes you can, although the sequence will only show the same or lower frame rates than itself. So a 30fps timeline will show 24fps as well, but it won't show 60fps...it'll convert 60fps clips to 30.

    Thanks Ed.. Very informative, but i have a specific question. I primarily shoot landscape footages with my drone rather just started, my goal is to get a smooth cinematic type videos so should i shoot in 30fps and interpolate the clip to 24fps before putting it in a 24 fps timeline? Another question if i increase the speed of a clip to about 200% do i have keep in mind some particular fps? What is your best suggestion regarding fps with drones.

    • @EdRickerVlogs
      @EdRickerVlogs  6 лет назад

      Thanks!
      30 fps to 24 fps is not the best option for smooth movement. You can do it if you're not moving the camera much, but long sweeping pans will produce some of the video hiccups I was referring to. 30/24 is 1.25, so if you slow down the footage you should be able to achieve roughly 24fps with a 30fps clip. It will be slightly slower though, but that's the smoothest option for a 24fps timeline. Doubling 30 to 60 should be no issue, it will be twice as fast.

    You spoke of the problem of using 30fps footage in a 24fps project making a jerky image. This can be corrected by adjusting the 30fps clip speed to 80% (or using the "Automatic Speed" option in the FCPX retime menu). This will make the clip run perfectly smoothly. This is how the math works - for example, if you shoot a 4 second clip at 30fps you have captured 120 frames. Divide those same 120 frames by 24 and you now 5 seconds of video, which is the same as running the clip at 80% speed. Obviously this slows the footage down a little, so you can't use it with people speaking, but it would have worked perfect for the example clips shown in your video.

      You can't get a proper amount of motion blur if you are exporting 60 as 24 fps at a normal speed. Also, frames are being dropped unevenly in this case, that can cause jerky motions. 30 fps is a best choise for RUclips.

    One thing that isn't really addressed in this video is shutter angle/speed. If your shooting at 30 fps with a 180 degree shutter and export it to 24 fps you will get that choppy look because your not getting as much motion blur as you would with a 24 fps 180 degree shutter. The real question IMO is what's the best shutter angle to use at higher fps so that you can both slow down the video and capture fast moving objects but also get that cinematic look from the final export.

    • @mrlightwriter
      @mrlightwriter 5 лет назад

      That's a great question, but there isn't probably a "best" shutter angle that covers all the situations at, say, 120fps, in order to convert to 24fps, 30fps or 60fps...
