Fun Obedience - Training Two Dogs at the Same Time Using the Honour System

  • Training two dogs at the same time using the honour system is a great way to teach your dog self-control and to become comfortable around the other dog. It provides safety as well. For example, while one dog is going through obedience training drills, burning off physical and mental energy using toys and food, the other dog is lying down in a specific place. The distraction of working one dog while the other is in place produces a high level of self-control. Watch as I train my malinois mix and black lab at the same time using toys, food, and an XDOG® vest.
If your dogs have off-leash obedience training and you're wondering, "how can you train two dogs at the same time" this video is for you! Here's one way I do it using the honour system.

Wonderful lead-follow! Your dogs are so cute! Do you have a video explaining what it is you do with the ball-stick? I saw you working with them with it, but not sure what/how you do it.

Hi, Duke. I haven't checked in for a while but this made me smile. My dogs look EXACTLY like these 2. And I too have a band on my right arm due to "Chuck it elbow." How does the vest burn off more energy? I do 20 minutes of play three times a day and they know exactly what "PLAY" means. Like you say, a tired dog is a good dog.

Hi Leah! Thanks for watching! Since the vests are weighted, the dogs are using more energy during these sessions. For my high-drive dog, this is great way for her to burn off some energy!

You are such a huge inspiration to me. I tell everyone about how amazing your training is! Because of you, I am looking into becoming a dog trainer and taking your course in Canada... 🙂

Gun Dog trainers won't play tug because it makes dogs bite the birds too hard

    • @unleashedpotentialK9

From our experience, It really depends on the gun dog trainer's experience in training. Most Gun dog trainers don't know bite work either. You are correct, that playing tug makes dogs bite harder, we agree with you, but this is why I'm doing it with the specific lab. Some gun dogs need the training to bite softer also. All dogs are different ( harder, softer, stronger weaker) and so are training approaches, depending on one's experience, you can be very creative to reach your desired goal. Just like in every recipe a good chef has the ability to make adjustments and be creative to serve something that is desired. I have a youtube video of my malinois who did a lot of bite work, holding a live mackerel in his mouth as it was just pulled out of the ocean, without damaging the fish as it wiggles in his mouth he holds it as I asked. check it out, you'll be entertained at the least. In the video, I demonstrate the difference between a trained soft bite and a harder bite. My Malinois was an epic gun dog for over 12 years. He did not bite the birds too hard or damage anything except Bad guys and bite suites. haha... This individual Lab in the video tends to have an extremely soft mouth and a weak grip. We worked on both strength and grip. Lots of holds, still and walking carrying dumbells for strength and calmness. I also wanted a firmer grip, especially for any geese that may be flapping or fighting late fall. So to give the dog experience in a fight and to playing a little tug now and then, just right, to help build a better grip. He now has 2 very successful hunting seasons under his belt now with no birds bit to hard or damaged. I hope this helps with clarity. here is the other video I mentioned. ruclips.net/video/z0ihm9MqbK4/видео.html enjoy.

@@unleashedpotentialK9 there are things to use from all niches (WHOA training from gun dogs is one, problem solving from Yukon Quest lead dogs is another) I've trained the most divergent types of dogs of anyone I have met (learned how to train Gulag prison dogs for example) I was stating what Gun Dog trainers will tell you. Ronnie Smith or George Hickox (if you know gun dog trainers you know who they are) will say exactly what I wrote.
