VLOGS EVERY THURSDAY!!
#ratemydorm #jedcal
Not even a software engineerer or CSmajor. This is interesting to invest my time in watching
Happy to hear that 🤝
I think a forum is a good idea but I think the name "ratemydorm" still scopes you into that niche. Maybe a higher level parent company that encompasses the entire domain of "schools" rather than just discussions about "school dorms" would be better instead of just pivoting the name ratemydorm completely into something else, you can create something more broad and keep ratemydorm as well
Yeah, I think about that all the time. Having a parent company is an interesting idea, will think about that. Thanks for the feedback!
A concept you could consider for forums is making private forums just for students who go to the same school, verified by their school email. It would probably also help with spam. Not sure if you've ever used the app Blind, but you have to enter your company email and then you have access to anonymous forums for just people at your company and ones open to anyone - creates super interesting conversations when you know everyone in the conversation is strictly at your company!
200 iq move on buying that standing desk for your friend :D
Plot twist I knew he was leaving and just wanted to keep the desk for myself
@@jedcal yeah, exactly! hahaha
Not a CS major, i know nothing about coding but i genuinely love this series!! Ur def one of my favorite youtubers
Thank u!!!
Honestly love the forums idea. I really like how you're incorporating different functionalities to make your startup more active daily
Hey Jed! Maybe you could include a feature for the user profiles that lets you choose interests, kind of like on tinder. If these interests could then lead to subthreads on the forum if you click on them, people could engage with each other on these topics. This way, people would not only go to the site with regards to dorms but also to find like-minded people and exchange ideas. Maybe it would even be a good idea to have a global subsection per topic and one that is specifically for a specific university or dorm. I think this might help to build regularly engaging communities among your users, which could lead to a steady traffic on the site. If something like this is even feasible at all and it does not drift your website too far away from your niche.
Wow I just had this exact idea an hour before reading this comment haha. Thanks for the feedback!
Dude! I love how you're coding this but the documenting of the process is so good because of how you're able to storytell and capture cinematic shots. It feels like you're right there with you coding and go through the process. Nice work!
3:22 jed's password is definitely 1234
No............
Can’t wait to see how this project goes! Being a high school student I’ll soon have to make decisions on colleges and dorms, this is going to be a life saver😂
The excitement in your voice during the forums section of the video is enough to make me believe ratemydorm is going places
You should add a matching section on your site, or a way that students can find roommates on your site. That way you can get the universities and colleges to use your site to make matches for students too. Idk just a thought
If you’re looking into dorms + Reddit check out this startup called Fizz. It’s been doing really well at Stanford and might be a cool product market fit to also look into
Can you add a feature that also allows users to rate on-campus (or near campus) apartments? One issue I have found is I am not sure what student apartments are good options near campus without doing significant research for days and days. This issue presented itself when my university admitted too many students post-Covid school year and now not only is dorm housing limited, but apartments near campus have gouged the prices for the most popular apartments in the area, and even if they weren't gouged, availability in the most well-known apartments is nonexistent because of the amount of students. This would make apartment hunting for students so much easier.
I'm just a junior web developer but I love watching videos like this.
I think an idea for your forum could be that people can send messages. But when there's like words in it that shouldn't be there you can add them to a pending section where a moderator can delete that word and post it/remove the full message.
And you can also maybe add a button where people can report messages that are also bad and if they get a certain amount of reports, they will be sent to the mods as well.
This way I think you don't have as much work to do than when you would've checked every single message, but you still keep control over what is shown on your website!
Goodluck!
Nice idea, thanks!
Super cool concept, and would be super useful for prospective undergrad/grad students and where they should live at
Don't be upset, when they do this..every time they try to find the loopholes..you are the beneficiary, you will build a reliable site and not a fragile site that can be hacked or circumvented
True!
This YT channel is the future of marketing. Personal and from the creator himself! Keep up the great work man, very inspiring
jed! it's JOHNS HOPKINS not JOHN HOPKINS!!!!! hahahahaa
Hii I have a question and a suggestion
Suggestion: I think you being strict on the forums/is too much since it's a place for students to find roommates and just find perfect dorms etc why don't you make three categories like
1. The main group( where students can just chill and talk about university issues( you would need moderators for that)...
2. Chats under the various schools
Example: one separate chat for Barkley
One separate chat for Harvard
3. Personal d'ms
Where students can chat one one to finalize dorm deals
Question: with the introduction of the Patreon would you still update your RUclips audience?
Your review website will be the next big thing,, Everyone come back here and comment when this all blows up🙈🙈
Something like a built-in roommate matching program could also be a good idea Jed.
Agreed- one of my big picture plans!
Love your energy! It definitely takes a lot of discipline to code and launch something. I think the Patreon idea is pretty cool and is gonna be useful to a bunch of folks like me. Can't wait to see what's coming next for you and ratemydorm.
Thank you!
The forum idea is really great it's definitely gonna put more light to the website.. Good luck Jed
hey, @jedcal have you given a thought of giving discounts to the students if they book a dorm from your site, that could lead to daily users in your site, and for that, you have to tie up with the dorms in the states and so on the cycle continues and later on you can have a section where the owner himself can register to get listed in your site to find students for the dorm itself.
THIS MAN DESERVES A MILLION SUBSCRIBERS
could you do an update on how you are surviving (income, food, expenses, etc.) while working on your startup?
Love how you document the process!
Congrats Jed! So excited for you!
We are with you, your journey will inspire many 🤗
@jedical if you are trying to expand the users maybe add a feature to leave a review on college foods, clubs, classes and events? I feel like that would make more users engaged
Forums is a genius addition. One thing though - moderators should be general-purpose and not from a dorm themselves. Otherwise they'll delete all negative reviews, which will defeat the whole purpose of the site :-)
Thanks! And that’s good insight- but I don’t think a student would have that emotional attachment to the dorm where they’d want to hide bad reviews (unless they work for the school)
Ur dethroning Ben Awad from the startup niche and I’m here for it 🤠
im just here for the casual vlogs but im a little interested in coding 😁😁
Hey Jed!, great forum idea man...it'll definitely bring more active users
this is incredible dude and extremely motivating
A Cs Major, always wanted to build something cool or useful, but don’t know what to build
Could you copy over existing Reddit forums onto your forums (disclaiming that initial dialogue came from existing forums). That way, when your site is brand new, there is already a great forum base and might jump start more discussion and user retention instead of starting completely from scratch. Although this idea might infringe on reddits “property” by stealing their threads and putting them on your own site
Hm yeah I’d be concerned about the copyright there
so excited for this startup. great job, jed!
The forums section is a gamechanger for sure
Absolutely love your style of videos
reddit has moderators too
That's why iw wanted to be a developer after being a webdesigner with UX Knowledge. Make a Startup and help People
Wowww JEDCAL Filipino...love ur coding vlogs...make it everyday..luv from INDIA ...😍😘😘😘😘
Really awesome to see your work dude. Excited to see what comes next!
super happy to see your progress dude. Keep it up.
NEW JED VIDEO LETS GOOO
The forums idea is smart
refreshing
When I hear ratemydorm the first thing that comes to mind is a forum where people upload pictures of there decorated dorm, similar to r/desksetup and people give feedback. That could be something to look into, just a suggestion.
I like this! Thanks!
Well we are social beings. So having a feature to socialize with otther people through forums is good.
Finally new video 🥲
You’re becoming my favorite tech RUclipsr now
Loving these videos, please keep them coming!
This is a fucking movie 🔥
Great content, but please do yourself a favor, and publish this already
I understand that adding a feature after a feature is addicting, but your users will be best at providing feedback on what the service is lacking thats really of value to them
I myself had a problem with feature creep for years, and still occasionally fall to a victim of it, but MVP is really the way to go, and fixing problems on demands, and adding features when neseccary
Good luck
Valuable feedback! Will consider making forums public after launching
👏👏👏 big things are coming!
Cool! greetings from MX.
HEY JEDCAL LOVE UR CONTENT
JUST 1 DOUBT HOW MANY PEOPLE SRE WORKING ON UR STARTUP....
Hi Jedcal, I am a supporter of your app creation. and I'm sure you are well aware of protecting your app platform by looking into Protect Your App Idea. This means looking into the legal rights!! Please please...say you have. It takes at least a year to get your license so no one else can copy your idea. Otherwise someone else can do it before you can and they can legally sue you for the idea. The business world is vicious. you need to find a marketer who you can rely and trust on ASAP. You are on the right track. Peace
Do medicine but love Cs, so if it is still possible to post these abridge devlogs that would be much appreciated if not its cool.
Good video!
forums lookin fresh 😎
we love jed
awesome job bro, i wanna create something like youre doing
What about a commerce component? Students are always looking for minor items.
great idea.
always a good time when jed uploads #discordgang
Nice one Jed!!!
Great video
Mabuhay!
Hey Jed, will your patreon include how you do SEO and google adsense too? Personally would subscribe if you include tutorials on those!
Yea, agreed
Yeah I’ll be tackling both of those! And just for you I’ll have dedicated videos for those topics in the future 😎
@@jedcal will the patreons videos be on demand or only live sessions? like can i watch past videos as well?
Are you using the WEBP image format? If no, I recommend it! Small size, great quality, supported by a lot of browsers. One down side though, you’l have to build in a fallback for older Safari versions since they don’t support it…
Haven’t heard of that, will check it out. Thanks!
Hire some Indians do QA on your code. Have them make you test automation suite, have them set up automated CI/CD pipelines for all your repos. 100 repos for $5 on Fiverr. Race to the bottom baby.
Drope man!
Please calculate how many users you need to have to be profitable with ads, I see a potential problem there with your business model.
Why coding forums from scratch? I have to imagine there’s a ton of forum modules or plugins that have all the security features baked in at this point. Don’t have to worry about sql injections, cross site scripting, etc. Just for the learning aspect of it?
Hey! So Next js and firebase already have the things you mentioned built into it. Definitely not doing that from scratch
@@jedcal Awesome! Good luck to you and your endeavors.
Which programming language do you recommend learning? Perhaps which language do you use?
Love the vids bro :)
no martial arts scenes :(
no kicking, no boxing... this video is incomplete.
I’ll have martial art scenes soon just for you
Hey I am not going to university but I am going to college to study computer programming should I transfer in the future.
hi there Jed, is your Patreon link still working?
Since this video is somewhat Coding related, i'd love to know the tech stack you're using to develop that platform, and how are you going to deal with SEO when, apparently, you're using React to develop it given that react affect the SEO score badly.
I’ll be discussing all these on my Patreon if you’re interested! I’m using Next js which uses react but supports server side rendering
what programming language do you use for backend ?
I need a name for music in the outro please. I'm addicted to it.
Like how much SAT score how much ACT score
Awesome stuff Jed just shared on Twitter also subbed on Patreon. Also if you are looking for a mobile version of this I'm an Android Developer I can give a hand and contribute
Thanks!! Not sure of the practicality of a ratemydorm app but I’ll keep it in mind
Honestly imo the idea sucks... but I like the energy! Keep us updated!
Hi jed!❤️🇵🇭
Discord got me here
Hi friend how are you today could you give me information about admission process about Boston University
where are those pants from in 2:14
Which CSS framework are you using? :)
Tailwind!
How do you want monetize your rate my dorm
Hey are you using redux or context api or just State
I used redux in v1 of the app but it seemed like overkill. I’m just using context api now to keep track of the current user
I wonder what's the brand of his car.
Honda Civic
@@jedcal Cool! From a flash scene of the car tail I guess is that car. I have been focused on this car for a long time and I plan to buy it too this year.
🥳👏👏👏
Is he using VUE?
What is the location @2:35 ?
