    I think a forum is a good idea but I think the name "ratemydorm" still scopes you into that niche. Maybe a higher level parent company that encompasses the entire domain of "schools" rather than just discussions about "school dorms" would be better instead of just pivoting the name ratemydorm completely into something else, you can create something more broad and keep ratemydorm as well

    • @jedcal
      @jedcal  2 года назад +19

      Yeah, I think about that all the time. Having a parent company is an interesting idea, will think about that. Thanks for the feedback!

    A concept you could consider for forums is making private forums just for students who go to the same school, verified by their school email. It would probably also help with spam. Not sure if you've ever used the app Blind, but you have to enter your company email and then you have access to anonymous forums for just people at your company and ones open to anyone - creates super interesting conversations when you know everyone in the conversation is strictly at your company!

    Hey Jed! Maybe you could include a feature for the user profiles that lets you choose interests, kind of like on tinder. If these interests could then lead to subthreads on the forum if you click on them, people could engage with each other on these topics. This way, people would not only go to the site with regards to dorms but also to find like-minded people and exchange ideas. Maybe it would even be a good idea to have a global subsection per topic and one that is specifically for a specific university or dorm. I think this might help to build regularly engaging communities among your users, which could lead to a steady traffic on the site. If something like this is even feasible at all and it does not drift your website too far away from your niche.

    You should add a matching section on your site, or a way that students can find roommates on your site. That way you can get the universities and colleges to use your site to make matches for students too. Idk just a thought

    Can you add a feature that also allows users to rate on-campus (or near campus) apartments? One issue I have found is I am not sure what student apartments are good options near campus without doing significant research for days and days. This issue presented itself when my university admitted too many students post-Covid school year and now not only is dorm housing limited, but apartments near campus have gouged the prices for the most popular apartments in the area, and even if they weren't gouged, availability in the most well-known apartments is nonexistent because of the amount of students. This would make apartment hunting for students so much easier.

    I think an idea for your forum could be that people can send messages. But when there's like words in it that shouldn't be there you can add them to a pending section where a moderator can delete that word and post it/remove the full message.
    And you can also maybe add a button where people can report messages that are also bad and if they get a certain amount of reports, they will be sent to the mods as well.
    This way I think you don't have as much work to do than when you would've checked every single message, but you still keep control over what is shown on your website!
    Goodluck!

    Hii I have a question and a suggestion
    Suggestion: I think you being strict on the forums/is too much since it's a place for students to find roommates and just find perfect dorms etc why don't you make three categories like
    1. The main group( where students can just chill and talk about university issues( you would need moderators for that)...
    2. Chats under the various schools
    Example: one separate chat for Barkley
    One separate chat for Harvard
    3. Personal d'ms
    Where students can chat one one to finalize dorm deals
    Question: with the introduction of the Patreon would you still update your RUclips audience?

    hey, @jedcal have you given a thought of giving discounts to the students if they book a dorm from your site, that could lead to daily users in your site, and for that, you have to tie up with the dorms in the states and so on the cycle continues and later on you can have a section where the owner himself can register to get listed in your site to find students for the dorm itself.

    Forums is a genius addition. One thing though - moderators should be general-purpose and not from a dorm themselves. Otherwise they'll delete all negative reviews, which will defeat the whole purpose of the site :-)

    • @jedcal
      @jedcal  2 года назад

      Thanks! And that’s good insight- but I don’t think a student would have that emotional attachment to the dorm where they’d want to hide bad reviews (unless they work for the school)

    Could you copy over existing Reddit forums onto your forums (disclaiming that initial dialogue came from existing forums). That way, when your site is brand new, there is already a great forum base and might jump start more discussion and user retention instead of starting completely from scratch. Although this idea might infringe on reddits “property” by stealing their threads and putting them on your own site

Please please...say you have. It takes at least a year to get your license so no one else can copy your idea. Otherwise someone else can do it before you can and they can legally sue you for the idea. The business world is vicious. you need to find a marketer who you can rely and trust on ASAP. You are on the right track. Peace
