- Today I finally make it back to my own little slice of heaven...this time with a camera!
47th street is a weird place, but there are always wonders to be found. If you're shopping for a Rolex, Patek Phillipe, Audemars Piguet, Omega, Vacheron Constantin, Cartier, Richard Mille, etc, the Diamond District is the place for you. If you're looking for Gold, Silver, Platinum, or anything in between, 47th street has jewelry for you.

*at 10:18 in the video, we see a Daytona that I describe as "gorgeous". Well, as a viewer pointed out to me, it must be some sort of franken watch, because the case has crown guards, which were not introduced until 1988 with the 5-digit Zenith Daytona's. The watch features a Paul Newman dial, which was long gone by 1988.
Just an FYI and a correction, I guess! (and I take-back all the nice things I said about it!!🤬)

This is an incredible video. I could imagine this channel blowing up if you just did this twice a week, go into shops with a hidden camera and haggle with the hidden gems type character hustlers. You live in the coolest city in the world, gotta take advantage of it.

The problem is: the camera is the opposite of hidden or subtle. People looking at weird, wondering what I'm doing... I'm kinda uncomfortable with it tbh. But I've got some things set up in the future with stores allowing me to come in and film.
@@DrRolexPhD use your phone, it’s much less conspicuous. modern phones have quality video now. Could put it in a front shirt pocket, or better yet get a tiny body cam on Amazon for like 50 bucks. Worst they’ll do is tell you to leave.

Yeah I mean, now that it's cold outside, I wear my Sub every day with confidence. But the last few months of t-shirt weather have been stressful. I did wear the Sub daily, but I was never fully relaxed; always scanning my environment and the people around me.
The one that stood out in all the windows? The DJ41 with the Azzuro blue dial and romans. That dial really pops.
Great video, you captured the feel of 5th Avenue and Midtown very well. Next time I am in Manhattan, I will check out 47th Street - looks crazy, but fun.

No shortage in rolex on there… it’s the same in London. Rolex stores only have display models - all the watches are at the grey mkt dealers
The question is, How do they get there?.
If u see Rolex's 2021 models availability in Hong Kong gray market u will be shocked.
But every thing has an end, soon the bubble will die.

Damn that Sky Dweller looked fine on your wrist! You know I loved this episode. Highlights: Mom's face and the caption you gave her. The monstrous iced out Milgauss...who the hell would want that thing?! Of course so many watches that I DID want. I'll be honest I have always shied away from 47th st as I have been afraid I'd be eaten alive by the salespeople. Bargaining isn't my strong suit. I loved the Polaris in the window of Wempe and the Glasshütte PanoDates. So tell us. Which OP are you hoping to get? The green one? Loved seeing the new Explorer. I have yet to run across one.

Right? The sky dweller looked great, and yeah it's a little thick, but it's a small price to pay for such a cool complication.
But, I want the 36mm OP. I want that tiny, slim, weightless watch that can fly under the radar (relatively). I want a counterweight to my Sub, which I sometimes find a bit big and ungraceful.

but they go for about $32k on the grey market.

@@dougm659 those were all "exhibition" pieces. They don't actually work... you can tell by the position of the hands always at 10:10 with the seconds hand a little past 30 seconds

Yes, 47th street is a great option.
If you're looking for a slightly nicer, boutique, appointment-based experience, check out Element in Time. They're a grey dealer on the 11th floor of the Fuller Building on 58th and 5th. I bought my current unpolished 16610 from them, and I highly recommend them.
Nice of u to take us on a watch stroll and I'm glad u did not get mugged. Uptick shows around Hong Kong sometimes but it seems like the Chinese are flooded with so much more that its unattractive, they display them like cheap candy. But that's where the watches are nowadays.

Yeah dude, go to Wempe to try it on, at least. The people who work there are really cool, they're not stuck-up (in my opinion).
When you're trying it on, just tell them how badly you want the watch, and they'll register your interest. It may take a year but hey, it'll be worth the wait.

Great vid. Do they have most of the steel sports models at Wempe to try on?? I will be down there in Jan so would like to know...I already have a 16610 submariner which looks great on my 6.75 in wrist but wondering if the new 41 would look as nice ....can you comment on that since I believe you went from a 6 digit to a 5 digit sub? What was your reason for doing so? Several questions on my post...appreciate any reply.

So, they don't have all the models, but they have a decent spread: 41mm sub, Datejusts, Yacht Masters, OPs, GMTs, etc. It's pretty new, so maybe they'll add more over time, but for now there are roughly 15 to 20 models.
I went from the 40mm ceramic sub no-date to the 16610 (with several Rolex's in between) mainly for the following reasons:
- I was concerned with the long-term wear of ceramic. I like things that age (leather, denim, cotton jackets, wallets, bags, etc) so I was worried that, in 20 years, my ceramic sub will be beautifully scratched and aged, but the bezel will be all new and shiny.
- it was a no-date, and I realized I wanted a date.
- the fat lugs bothered me over time.
- i fell in love with pre-ceramics in general because of Austin Daniels.
@@DrRolexPhD thanks very much for the reply. It was very helpful...I'm definitely going to hit up Wempe now in Jan. I do love my 16610. For my wrist size it looks great. Around the time that I purchased it, I was able to try on a 116610 and it just looked all wrong...way too big and blocky...the 5 digit sub looked and fit so much better so I went with that. It was my first Rolex. Since then, I picked up a new blue dialed YM40 and a new black Datejust 41. These newer models are amazing....the fit and finish and the newer bracelets are fantastic. Now when I put on my 16610 it feels a little cheap if I'm being honest. Hence why I'm thinking about the new 41mm Sub. Maybe I have a bit of that "never happy" syndrome that a lot of us watch people have. Im hoping that after trying on the newer Sub, that I can be at peace with the 16610 since the last thing I need is to spend more money on another Rolex...at least for now.

Hey Thanks for taking us around NYC watch shopping. I just started collecting seriously this year. I'm in NYC too but have only purchased from watches of swizerland in soho. Bought two neo vintage 5 serial rolexes. I heard the guy in the video quote $22k for a hulk. That's not bad considering WOS wants nearly $30K for theirs. Makes me think I overpaid for my 2 watches.
I'll go check out 47th street. Looks like the selection is good.

People are often intimidated by the tough, NYC watch dealers but my wife kicked their asses. She bought a Cartier Ballon Bleu at her price, not theirs, the guy caved when she said “your loss, I’m leaving…”

The Daytona is a 6263 Newman but I’d wager it’s a fake dial. That’s the rarest variation (black dial, black bezel, screw down) and sells for 500k+

Thanks for the tour! Does Wempes actually have a credible waiting list? Tourneau and my local AD don’t do lists, - which is fine, why give people false hope. Did you go to the the NYC Watch and Jewelry show? Ended up wearing a Tudor but had a couple of vintage Rolexes in my pocket for Adam from Menta Jewelers to check out. Got to meet Roman from LB, -lovely guy.
I would've love to go to the show but I work weekends unfortunately.

How is possible to get insure that rolexes in this stores are original ?
99.9% of Rolexs from any brick and mortar store on 47th street will be authentic.
Edit: original? Like all original parts? On the exterior, you have to know which parts match the year and model of the watch. Bracelets have codes which will tell you that info. On the interior, 99% of the time it'll be all original. The best thing to do is, know the stores return policy. If it's 30 days, bring the watch to RSC within those 30 days and ask them to give you a diagnosis for a service. They will inspect the watch top to bottom, then give you a service recommendation. Tell them you'll think about it, and leave with the service diagnosis papers.
I think if I bought a watch on that street I would always wonder if I had paid too much or somehow been ripped off with a fake.
Well, like anything else, you gotta know your stuff. Be an educated buyer.

Here's a question for you. You said that WEMPE has these watches to try on. When you say that like too ,does the sales person say WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE PLACED ON A WAITING LIST FOR THIS MODEL.?? Or are they honest and say you probably will not ever get it. Just curious. I'm starting to have the attitude that if i am not important enough to you as a customer ,maybe i won't do any business with you.
Great question. The guy who was assisting me (not my regular guy) with the exhibition watches asked me, at the end, which was my favorite. I said the Green OP, and before he could respond, I blurted out "but I'm already on the list for a Submariner with Andre (my guy)"...
I fucked up, and I should've let him say "I can put you on the wait-list for that, if you want".

Did anyone else really want to see the face of the woman in the dress and white sneakers carrying the black store bag, who was walking just ahead of the camera for quite a while towards Wempe? The dress was so ghastly, I was dying to see who was brave enough to wear it.
NYC 47th Street - Seedy AF. Swiss steel is about precision, cleanliness, order and joy. None to be found among the trash and dry-snipers sizing you up on the street.

@@DrRolexPhD The crown guards were introduced in the 5 digit Daytona, the Zenith in 1988 and that did not come with a PN dial as far as I know. Hence, apparently a Franken.
I just can't wear my rolex now . Not even my tudor . It just does not feel right . I'm always worried. It's time to get rid of them. I wear a few San Martin watches to the beach and out to bars . If something bad happens I'm out $400 . . Stupid to wear a luxury watch in any big city . Also who would trust any of these guys ! Rip off street !

No, they were exhibition only models. They have partial movements in them, so they don't work. There not for sale.

Idk. The VAST majority of watches will be real, just like any reputable dealer. They have a brick and mortar store, and a reputation to uphold.
The bad rep 47th has/had was because they're sharks. If you have no negotiation skills, they'll tear you apart. But in terms of authenticity, everything is legit.
@@DrRolexPhD I’m sure most are real. Just don’t wanna be that guy who buys a fake. The Rapper paid 200g for his watch. Someone one the net told him he was had. Thankfully they refunded his money. He should’ve done his due diligence and so should they. How did they even let a fake slip in.

I do not understand how people can pay over retail for a used watch, with scratches and/or in some cases polished. If you are a tourist, you may get scammed (not getting documents, spare links, malfunctioning watches, ...) even get a fake watch. If new, you are feeding a grey market that is against your interest. Those shops should sell at least 20 - 30% under the ADs prices (depending on the condition).
What part do you not understand? If the watch is not available for retail then you have no option but to pay over retail.

Nice to take a walk there window shopping but buying from them is another story. They have a horrible reputation.
Remember , for $24.95 Timex or Casio will sell you a watch that will keep time just as well . If you want to impress people just write a check for $24000 and stick it under the watch band .

They're reputation is bad, but in reality, you'll get the same prices/service/quality of watch from them as anyone else.
