    Probably the best tutorial on this technique that I've seen. I'm a 63 year-old duffer who is now simracing, using mainly paddle shifts on the steering wheel, but in my younger days I recall using a 'three on the tree' transmission, but cannot recall doing heel-toe.
    I bought an H-pattern shifter for my rig, and will now learn how to do heel-toe, which I should have done 40 years ago, lol.

    great vid bro. I've been practicing heel toe rev match down shifting in my new focus rs. I got a gas pedal spacer from mishimoto that brings the gas pedal up to be even with the brake. It makes it so much easier to reach the gas with your heel. I've been rev matching for years but the heel toe takes a bit of practice. It seemed like i could never get the blip right since my gas pedal was recessed and it was so damn uncomfortable and almost physically impossible to reach. as soon as I got the gas pedal spacer I banged it out perfect in a few days. my lap times at the track actually decreased a bit since my shifts are so much smoother. anyway, this is by far the most informative heel toe vid on here. props

    Another tip that helped me was to start with heel toe from 4th to 3rd as it's an easier gearbox stick move compared to the 3rd to 2nd shift. You have so much going on when learning heel toe that the simple 'push the gearstick up' move from 4th to 3rd takes one variable out of the equation.
    I also think modern cars are so insulated it's harder to hear the engine revs. I find it harder to heel toe in my wife's 3yo Audi than my 13yo Cayman!!

  • @KyngShadow

    good video, just a note for everyone else watching he says "drop the clutch" you never want to DROP the clutch. You'll end up with a dead clutch quickly. You always progressively release the clutch...unless you like visiting the mechanic lol

    • @toaneyforester5851
      @toaneyforester5851 3 года назад +1

      If u hv a heavy duty clutch u can “drop it” faster than stock clutch, I know becuz I learnt in a stock clutch and now drive with a heavy duty clutch. U can technically drop the clutch if the revs perfectly line up with the associated speed range for that gear.

    Thanks for this very good video. I am still unclear on one point: When do you start using the brake in conjunction with the throttle as opposed to just touching the throttle only? Is it after a certain gear or certain speed or revs? In the video you seemed to do it only when you actually need to stop so is this where throttle and brake are used together? Note that I only have a 5 speed manual.

    I love your videos, I have a 2013 FRS myself and I find it quite hard to heal and toe, anytime I keep my toe on the brakes and blip the throttle with my heal, I apply too much brake force. But practice makes perfect, I can rev match perfectly though.

    • @TexasRevving
      @TexasRevving  7 лет назад +1

      I was the same exact way! The pedal position really isn't made for a real "heel toe" on our cars. Just get used to sitting still with the car running and blip the throttle while on your brake. After a day of driving, it clicks. Best of luck & thanks for the support!

    QUESTION: do i let go of the gas pedal before letting go of the clutch while matching the rev, or do i keep my foot on it while realising the clutch?

  • @Darkhan9
    @Darkhan9 5 лет назад

    I always drove only manual, Europe doesn't really like automatic transmissions. I've never heard of revmatching until recently when a car i like has this active rev matching system. Searched some info about that like this vid, and it seems i was doing that without knowing. Though i find it weird to press the brakes and throttle at the same time with the same foot as you are doing. I was just braking then hitting the throttle progressively while releasing the clutch.

  • @erickwatt6391
    @erickwatt6391 4 года назад +1

    You can go down the gears without rev matching by slowing down to around 1500rpms(still in gear then down shift to lower gear). This works because when your going slow say 50 kmph or about 30mph in top gear the lower gear is only going to increase rpms by about 500. Also in modern cars, the rpms wont go lower then 1500rpms whilst your moving and shifting gear. This is a tip for simple daily driving.

To me it's more natural to rev with my toe and just relax my heel on the break? Just curious.

      Before. Put in gear, blip the throttle to rev match, release the clutch.

    • @Sheriff_K
      @Sheriff_K 6 лет назад

      Release the clutch slowly after the engagement point, right?

    • @after_midnight9592
      @after_midnight9592 6 лет назад +4

      You release it normally, like in every other shift.
      Once you blip the throttle, you'll quickly have to find the engagement point. If you blip and release the clutch too slow, revs will drop back to idle quickly and you'll miss the sweet spot. You must not hesitate.
      I learned this in Assetto Corsa with pedal indicators, before trying it out for real. You have to understand what you're looking for. Enough blip to bring the revs up and making the bite, right at the top of the blip. Making the engagement with too much or too little throttle will ruin it and you'll know it. Or if you're already at the biting point with revs either still building up or already dropping down.
      This is why perfect H&T feels so good, when you nail it - Making the bite exactly when the revs reach the top, before the drop.

    • @Sheriff_K
      @Sheriff_K 6 лет назад

      So do it quick, but without dropping the clutch?

    • @after_midnight9592
      @after_midnight9592 6 лет назад +1

      Yes, don't drop it. The point is to not upset the car under braking.

  • @BboyJJRuda
    @BboyJJRuda 7 лет назад +1

    I might have missed this in your video so apologies... Before using the heel toe method, how did you turn on corners? Lets say you're at 4th gear (going faster than you should) and on a right turn lane about to turn right into another street; and need to slow down + shift down. How would you do that without using the heel toe method?

    • @jramc89
      @jramc89 7 лет назад +1

      BboyJJRuda Brake, downshift to third or second gear (without releasing the clutch completely) then step on the gas pedal until you hear the revs are high enough to get the most torque and release the rest of the clutch slowly. This may not be the right way, but it feels very smooth.

  • @BboyJJRuda

    I was taught by an ex professional driver that the correct rev matching is done in this way:
    -Push your clutch and move the gear from, let's say, sixth gear to neutral
    -Give some throttle to rev match
    -Put quickly your gear in fifth fear
    In this way your the clutch and also the gear disingage completely from the engine
    Am I correct?

    • @pushhrodd01

      Instead of shifting into neutral you can shift into 5th gear with the clutching still in blip the gas and the new release the clutch

      This is called double clutching which you can use if you lets say want to from 5 to 3 then double clutching is relevant. In other cases u use this method "heel and toe"

      That.. doesn't sound like double clutching.
      Double Clutching is Being in 6th (for example) Clutch in > 5th to neutral > Clutch out > Clutch in again > Neutral to 5th > Clutch out.
      What he's asking is Clutch in > 6th to Neutral > Blip throttle > Neutral to 5th > Clutch out.
      Normal Rev matching (as explained in most videos) would be Clutch in > 6th to 5th > Blip throttle > Clutch out. He's basically been told to blip the throttle while in neutral rather than while being in the gear he's changing too. As for whether this is accurate or not i idk

    So It's Clutch, Blip Throttle, Downshift, Let out clutch??? Or Clutch, Downshift, Blip Throttle, Let out Clutch???
    I tried rev matching on a 370z to get the idea of it since it has active rev match. Then went and did it on a mustang. I did it but it jumped a lil. Guess I didn't give it enough gas?

      might have given it too much gas. its called matching b/c you wanna match where the rpm would be in that gear at the same or a bit slower speed, so if you're going 20 mph in third, and rev to 5k to downshift to second it might jump from being revved too high

      also as for your first question about the order, it's kinda blip first but try to do it at the same time

    Half of the manual car community says downshifting revmatching is essential and should be done Everytime you shift down So what's the correct way because I'm sick and tired of this argument. I'm self teaching myself stick in a ND mx5 because I have no friends ( I like being by myself) and no one in my family knows stick. I've just been watching videos after videos after videos on stick tutorials. Half of the videos say downshifting revmatching should be done when downshifting. So I'm like WTF is the correct way to shift down. I've been driving for a year now on my ND and I just finally are getting better at upshifting but down shifting is where I don't know what to do. I've tried to just shift down without blipping the throttle and I buckle the car but the car buckles really hard alot. So what is the correct way to downshifting?

    Some people say you don't need to rev match at all ever. I call bullshit. My car will punish you for not doing it.

    Have grown up driving manual, first time hearing nonsense like this Heel Toe stuff.
    You just break and get the clutch pedal in, and then while you release the clutch you press the gas. Just gotta move your right leg fast from the break to the gas, even tho considering you're going pretty fast there is no rush really. No double pressure or anything on the pedals. That's just dumb.
    That's how you cause accidents by watching which pedal you are pressing. LMAO, Murica really has some phucked up stuff!
    Just stick to automatic guys!

      well you know how to drive manual but you actually dont know how to drive it. you wont cause accidents. when you learn rev match youll understand it helps you brake much faster and it wont jerk the crap out your car when just downshifting. ppl that get into accidents and cause accidents are the automatic drivers haha.

      just a guy trying to make sense of your comment even tho it’s quite hard tbh. First of all being able to drive manual and driving manual my entire life basically would mean I know that you can break faster using the transmission.
      Thank you for smth that I know for 10 years the very least.
      And if you read my comment properly you would have understood that I was talking about this heel to toe nonsense.
      You just do it fast, you don’t need to press the break and gas pedal at the same time!
