Black Sabbath doesn’t have a bad era
I’m a massive Sabbath fan but I’d have to say the era between Dio and Tony Martin (83’ - 86’) with Born Again and Seventh Star was a significant drop in quality. Maybe not “bad”, so to say, but definitely rough. Martin rejuvenated a lot of life back into Sabbath
@@brandonralphs1717 I went back and listened to every album for the first time in chronological order. I was just surprised to hear how consistent they were. Yes some albums are more impactful than others but there’s at worse, an album is just ‘good’ which says a lot.
The more I listen to Sabbath, the more I realize the only bad era for me is the Ozzy era. Sacrilege, I know

@@LRM5195 That 60s-70s bluesy psychodelic kind of metal they played with Ozzy sounds very dated to me. I think the band benefitted enormously with a more synth-laden mysterious 80s sound Dio brought in and Tony Martin expanded upon.

My wife bought me the guitar that Eddie wrote the solo on for my 50th birthday. It’s a pink Peavey EVH. He and Tony picked it up from a guitar store in Birmingham on the day they wrote the track in 1993. It still has an energy ❤

Bobby Rondinelli on Drums, he made such a great job on adding musicality and variation on transitions, he’s not Cozy but he doesn’t have to. Awesome drummer 🤘🏽
Bobby was an excellent successor to Cozy, twice! In Rainbow, post Down to Earth record with the Difficult to Cure album.
As great and HEAVY as Cozy was, Rondinelli is the superior drummer. Cozy was a better all-around musician, though.
I also dig their Rondinelli album Bobby did with his brother Teddy (Our Cross, Our Sins). Tony also sang on the record!

I think the new remixed albums sound so much better and as a long time Black Sabbath fan I think looking back over history it is clear to me that Tony Martin is the best singer the band ever had because of his voice and range he is the only one who could sing any song on all 19 albums.
I love these tender ballads. I bring home my date, put her on the couch, put this album on at about 10 and go in to make my move. Hasn't worked yet. I must admit my air guitar needs a little work.

Tony Martin is an amazing vocalist. It's so sad it took all these years for people to realize this. But I knew since "The Eternal Idol". I'm hoping for future projects between Martin and Iommi.

The biggest head scratcher of an album cover choice of Sabbath’s entire catalogue, even more so than Born Again it’s fair to say in my humble opinion. The Scorpions already having used the same image years earlier has already been mentioned, but would love to hear Tony Iommi’s take on what happened here exactly and why it was bizarrely approved for release?
Holy shit that bass/drum verse after the leads sounds soooo brutal. Geezer's sound is a big part of the real Sabbath feel.

Black Sabbath never lacked a good frontman, bassist, guitarist and drummer! I think during 80s and 90s, music industry just went straight into the shitter focusing more on entertainment instead of music and talent. Black Sabbath was and will always be an inspiration for those who truly seek music and talent.
I 've always regarded non Ozzy Black Sabbath albums with suspicion.
This is so good, that I'm definitely going to explore further.
You'll soon realise: Paranoid is the worst Sabbath album ever. Ozzy was just a mediocre singer, untalented musician and songwriter, playing with talented guys and stealing their credits

@@jans2887 It sounds muffled, like it's playing next door in your neighbors bathroom. For years Gillan said he was so upset with the finished result that he threw the record through the window of his car. He also said he has a tape from the studio were it sounds good but it's no material for a remix.
About a year ago I read that the reel to reel master have been found in the archives of a record label.
Tony has said that he first wanted to remix the Martin era albums and then have a go at Born Again.
I think this is one of the albums that gets appreciated years later like Weezer's Pinkerton. Forbidden has its golden moments.

I still can't tell if some of the soloing, especially in the middle, is Tony trying to sound like Eddie or Eddie trying to sound like Tony or if it's a brilliant comp. Great work.
Tony trying to sound like Eddie. Eddie was supposed to play, but his record label said no. He wasn't even allowed a credit for the song, despite helping write it.

@@jefflitchfield4950 Iommi had Van Halen play a solo to the excellent song he was working on....Iommi tried to duplicate it....gave up and did his own solo....Iommi says there is a tape of Van Halen's original scratch solo buried in his archives....he hopes to one day unearth it.....

Tony Martin gave copies to Iommi. Unfortunately, I doubt they'll get released. Tony Martin also recently found his Dehumanizer session recordings.
I really wish these 2 guys would pull a band together even if the Black Sabbath can't be used which is crazy as Toni Iommi should be able to use that name . He has been the constant in the Sabbath story .

Great song. Gotta love that Geezer bass solo in it. Wish they would have included the version they did with Eddie Van Halen's guitar solo. Sabbath IMHO played the weakest songs off this album when they toured in 1994. They should have played "Evil Eye" & "Virtual Death" the two best songs on the album.

@@RSTI191 lol have you not read the story where tony says flat out that when they recorded this song he tried to replicate the stuff ed did during their jam/writing session but he couldnt. Tony has also said there’s a tape of ed doing this from that initial jam but they cant find it.
Thats not ed playing, thats not his tone and those arent evh licks, listen to 2:45 and you’ll hear some dead giveaways thats tony (vibrato, phrasing)
1:30-1:37 is iommi too, you can tell it is by the vibrato and licks

@@RSTI191 lol i dont need to google, ive read many different articles pertaining to it that contradict what you initially stated in your first comment. Obviously you’ve never listened to either iommi or evh very closely and you cant tell the difference between their playing styles.
Back in Oct 2018 Tony martin posted on his Facebook he has a poor quality recording of ed soloing on it from the writing/jam session ed was part of, but he cant share it due to legal reasons. Tony iommi himself says he has that recording somewhere but cant find it and he’s gone on record saying that when they recorded evil eye during the cross purposes sessions he tried to duplicate what ed did.
Are you trying to back peddle on what you said, you incorrectly stated ed is on this at first and then you’re talking about the existence of a recording featuring ed. i know there’s a recording featuring ed on this, its the rehearsal tape martin & iommi have spoken of

Tyr - Not perfect, but well worth revisiting.
Cross Purposes - Underrated. Solid banger throughout.
Forbidden - Sorry, but still easily one of the worst albums I ever heard, no matter how many times I tried listening to it.

I think Tony Martin is Sabbath's greatest vocalist.
The masterpiece "TYR" is my favorite Sabbath album.
Objectively, he was. Second longest serving after Ozzy. Hit the highest note on a Sabbath track (on Devil & Daughter) and is the only frontman to perform every major era and do them equal justice.
Tony Martin is also my favorite Sabbath singer and he's underrated to this day.
I like everyone from the Martin era, I didn't really like Forbiden, but not even Tommy Iommi liked it, but the simgle they re-released was very good, my favorite is also Tyr
