I can't believe the named it the same thing as a pro-KKK propaganda flick from a century prior. As for the controversy, I think a lot of that might be due to when it came out. If this movie had come out 10 years earlier, before the attempted resurrection of casual and overt bigotry, it would've probably would've been been received much better, such as how Glory was in its day.... Oh, and if you haven't seen Glory, I highly recommend it. It's about one of the military units serving during the civil war and the racism of the era, including from their own military. If they hadn't been purchased by the white man, their black captors in Africa would have killed them. But the blacks didn't have any gratitude for the whites who saved them and refused to work most of the time, to do even simple things like picking cotton. Blacks today make it like it was so harsh. "Ooooh! The cotton weighs 2 ounces. It's too heavy for me to lift!".

Some may dismiss this slavery era in history so easily and treat it as if it was something light hearted. The struggles and pains that slaves went through were too immense. Thinking about it all gets me so overwhelmed with emotion. Such a dark history...

This movie was supposed be nominated for an Oscar it was excellent I seen people cry in the theaters for the first time seen this when it first came out😊
Had a fantastic experience on set. Nate is the coolest and most thoughtful directors I've ever dealt with and he really deserves all the attention he's going to get
I'll tell more specifically after seeing the movie, but at this point I really doubt it's history, most likely it's a heavy sugar-coating of an actual event. Real-life Nat Turner called for killing almost every white person that his rebellion faced. They didn't even spare children. Fucking children! (c) I doubt that it will be addressed in the movie at least in a way, that is historically accurate.
Grim Butcher I'm not saying it was ok. I'm saying that the degree of which he revolted was justified. He was driven nearly insane by the cruelty of the slave owners. Killing children is never acceptable, but if your enemy starts to do it, you might be a little fed up.
Because we're tired of having all black movies be about slavery and gangsters. Black Panther offered something new and a good outlook on what our culture could become without the interruption of white people.
@Dai, yeah because "slavery" films made by WHITE FOLK - unlike this FREEDOM FIGHTER FILM made by a BLACK MAN - are the same things. THIS WAS OUR BLACK PANTHER, based ON A REAL SUPERHERO, not some WHITE MAN's fantasy of BLACK PEOPLE. WAKANDA is a damn joke.
@@VentureHolly not just that look up the average lifespan of Vikings that played a major role, if we in morden times as men only lived to like 30 the world would be hell
Job 31:13-15 "“If I have denied justice to any of my servants, whether male or female, when they had a grievance against me, 14 what will I do when God confronts me? What will I answer when called to account? 15 Did not he who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us both within our mothers?"
If you are White and you are offended by this movie or Nat Turner, don't see the need for this movie, or this movie makes you feel uneasy; you have some soul searching to do. I say this out of love and hope for the people of this country. A lot of people say that we have enough of these types of movies, but you never hear those grumbles about Holocaust films! It's really time for this country to DEAL with this pain, on both sides, and it's effects on the present so that we can move forward!
I am White and I do feel uneasy about a portrayal of a violent insurrection as a just event when translated to our world today. Violent insurrection is not what we need our Black countrymen to have on their minds today.
Of course you hear those grumbles about Holocause films, you just aren't listening. I resent all forms of keeping old wounds fresh out of the sake of healing our "national consciousness." If it were for the people, why do these artist keep all the money? These things are products, and it's an outright fact that Hollywood has manipulated audiences for profits and benefits from racial division. Less than 5,000 recorded lynchings in history and you've SHOT COUNTLESS MORE OF EACH OTHER since then. Where's the constant genre push of that little tidbit? If it's about healing, maybe you should appeal to each other to stop the killing, not keep 150 year old wounds VERY fresh in the minds of each new generation. Of course the world of film has a right to tell a powerful story that resonate throughout history, but the pattern is way too transparent after all these years. No one benefits more from racism than Hollywood.
This movie was incredible and parts of it brought me to tears. I will be seeing it again just to show nate parker support for his efforts in bringing the great nat turner to the lives of people who never knew about him.
Here come all the racist trolls saying this is "another slavery movie". Besides this one, Django Unchained and 12 Years A Slave how many RECENT slave movies can you think of? Do you say that about all the comic book movies or romance movies? This merely shows history. And yes, slavery was a brutal part of American history. It also shows them rebelling against their oppressors. It's based on Nat Turner, a real person who lead a real slave revolt. And by the way, I say this as a white Italian American dude.
Also note that when a movie like Gladiator or the Eagle comes out, they don't go "Oh, jeez, ANOTHER slavery movie, give me a break". They'll watch 4 seasons of Spartacus without complaint, but this trailer has them going "OH JEEZ STOP WITH IT ALREADY".
Carson Montgomery This isn't even a regular slavery movie though because it actually features a real slave revolt that happened. They could also make a Haitian Revolution movie about Toussaint Louverture too.
archfiendbaramos Also when they watch movies about the American Revolution, nobody ever says it's "promoting an anti-British agenda" but somehow racist people think this movie is "promoting an anti-white agenda".
***** Even if that's true, they make more than one comic book movie per year and more than one horror movie per year to but I don't see you saying anything about that.
One day a movie involving race will be released and people will not feel divided - until that day its not a movie that's dividing us.. it's the fact that we are still simply divided.
Its interesting that all walks of life experienced slavery. Regardless of the religion that man wrote. It wasn't the religion that made man evil. It was the choices of man. You see Christians today trying to enslave people? NO. Alright then.
Holy shit....I have goosebumps. I love this movie already. This would never have happened with studio interference. Props to Nate Parker for making it happen, and staying true at great risk.
This looks like a fantastic movie. However I see a lot of ridiculous hate in these comments from many different sides... We never should drown history, and we should always be skeptical as to what lens you are learning it from. Growing up (at least in my region of the Northwest) I was very lucky to have great teachers who taught us to the best of their abilities what REALLY happened. But that is not enough, we need to encourage our children to read for themselves and spend their own time learning... I wish I had more time to write but at the moment I do not. I will just end this by saying please... Please do not be just another wedge of division among human beings which every one of us is. Humanity is far more complex than "black people did this" white people did that" "but they did that and this and blah bah". Learn the history and use it to make the future more united, not to fill your heart with hatred.
I think it's also the fact that some people are saying this is released at the absolute worst time, with the fact that race relations are plummeting because of what's going on. Not saying I'm against movies like these I mean I loved Django Unchained and that was kind of a bit similar about an African American slave going up against slave owners, but honestly, I think some people will claim this is just fanning the flames and push a race war further. I'm not saying I believe it but honestly people are just ready to start killing each other soon regardless.
Lmao @ 400 years ago!!! Do me a solid....look up Jim crow laws. Pay VERY close attention to the dates.... Look up news articles of hangings ...again pay attention to the dates. Now maybe you will understand why the issue is still so VERY fresh and offensive to blacks. lmao smh cheater ... less than 60 years
Learn your own history you ignorant uneducated racist pig. Learn about the trans-Mediterranean slave trade and the Moors invasion of Southern Europe you imbecile. No one is hunting blacks but if you want a race war THEN BRING IT ON!
Tony Turner either one because I'm trying to find out who was the kid who was spying on them and then told the slave owners, if I find out the actors name I can find out who it was by searching it up, but if you knew who it was then that would be great:) I think it's Frederick Douglas? Is it?
***** i mean people pretending this is part of a conspiracy to make white people look bad. if showing the cultural context of the time and place is some how offensive to you then yes you are triggered. ps how the fuck do you know i am privileged when you know nothing about me?
no shit! when did i ever suggest the slaves depicted had it better than modern day youtube users? jesus christ you're full of yourself. thanks for pointing out the obvious and completely missing the point.
The greater irony is that these are supposedly the same people who never get triggered and hate politically correct, and want things to be said "like it is"; they are supposedly the ones who fight against trigger warnings and hyper-touchy SJWs. Now of course, that only applies if its THEIR triggering and THEIR politically incorrect and THEIR "like it is" version.
It's almost as if they forgot that they were watching a movie and that all biopics have historical inaccuracies. People look for any excuse to be outraged.
Servo Because this shit wants to portray a genocidal maniac as a hero. Well he wasn't, he was a maniac who killed little kids and also raped white women. None would have him so it lead to frustrations. White women back then stayed away from black people.
Plenty of people ragged on the inaccuracies of Brave Heart, too. A well-written story can make up for some of that. Hell, one of the best period piece movies, Glory, had a major scene that required multiple historic inaccuracies to make happen. Though, there's a key difference between telling a story with some embellished or altered details and telling one with significant revisions that fundamentally change the story on a major scale.
This honestly put tears in my eyes. Why do black people have to fight to be respected like people, when they are the most beautiful people? I don’t understand. Black people are dedicated they are smart loving helpful and so family oriented. And deserve every ounce of respect that anyone gets. I’m not black but my heart loves my brothers and sisters of African decent and always will. I teach my kids to do the same!
"black people are the most beautiful people", if this is true, then why do blk men always want to upgrade and marry white women when they become successful? Think carefully before you answer.
@@doberman2yk Success is subjective and not all blk men who obtained money run to marry white women. Those who do are part of an industry that believes if you look the part you can further advance your career. There’s 100 of thousands who of blk men and women who refuse to follow that doctrine. My question is if you have disdain for blk folk then why are you here? I’m sure it’s a school, church or grocery store you inflict your hatred upon.
im blessed and glad to be able to be taught in school as a child about nat turner..most kids these days will never know or be taught his story its a shame..
*Violets and Blues Did you think the trip from Africa to America was free? Whites didn't get free trips. They either paid up front or they paid on the backend by doing indentured servitude. Blacks paid with their labor. And they were very well fed compared to Europe or Asia. Apparently blacks are pretty happy with escaping Africa. They never go back.
I won't ruin it for you. But it basically shows that not all slaves were stupid and submissive. Every movie that currently exists tries to show how white people (like abraham lincoln) saved us poor, uneducated, helpless black people.
Abraham Lincoln couldn't give less than 2 fucks about the Stolen Africans in America, and much less about their emancipation. That bullshit Proclamation was ONLY put into place as a means of cutting off one of the South's primary means of income: Slave labor.
my people :-( I love you each and every one of you. lets keep our heads up. Yahshua is on his way. we all got to love and help one another. lets rise. together.
Cried my eyes out watching this movie, WoW! This movie is so good..... It is not much different than today, sadly. Now I completely understand the meaning from BLM and I can definitely feel the pain of my people, we need to uplift not put one another down.
Dopeness!!! Thought I could use a break with movies about slavery for a little while after watching 12 years a slave but this has more than peeked my interests. Its all about how a story is told and this looks damn good!
I was being quite polite, you know. Not everyone knows the word is actually "piqued" and I was tactfully saving him some minor embarrassment in the future (a company-wide email, for instance). Not everything should be met with a nasty attitude and stupid crap.
Spell check doesn't work on properly spelled words, such as "peeked." That's exactly how we wound up with millions of Americans who don't know "your" from "you're" or "there" from "they're." If you STILL don't recognize a minor good deed when you see one, then maybe you need a bit of an attitude adjustment. The aforementioned embarrassment was a potential scenario I was trying to save you from, I never indicated you should be embarrassed. I'm so done.
When I seen the white girl with the little black girl with the rope around her neck it’s killed me my heart drop… this makes me so angry thinking they really did this to my ancestors 🥺🤦🏽♀️
As a US History major I need to just say that THIS was the nastiest part of our history... 100s of years of pure tragedy, slavery is what tore us apart but it was also what brought us together... there's no arguing against it. But in the midst of all the hate, turmoil, and utter devastation... we stand here now, United and stronger than ever! God Bless America. United We Stand.
@Chandros Evans How do you know that? And are you comfortable in killing innocent children on the basis of future projections that may or may not be true?
@Chandros Evans here's a hypothetical. Let's say 2 KKK members have a little daughter, and she is 9 months old, do you think it is OK for me to kill the KKK members and the daughter?
Greg Howard the fuck are you talking about he just killed like 50 white people and got hanged for it. He was a good man and a hero but he didn't change shit. Blacks were too scared to rebel after they cut his skin off cut his head off and displayed him in the street. Shows how much you know about him.
Dilan I guess the closest you can find to a black hero is Nat "I hears voices in my head" Turner, aka Baby Killer. If alive today, he'd be a rapper, drug dealer, murderer.
so its better to keep making movies about dumbass college white kids?? luckily we can still pick and choose which movies/tv shows etc we want to see and not see
+0juliemarie0 What about movies about other tragedies? Slavery movies are a dime a dozen compared to other tragedies that were objectively worse than the slave trade.
lol it's a ret*red fantasy for black folks..I get u liked it cuz ur hatred for white folks...outside of that it was lame fantasizing by a rapist filmmaker 🤷♂️ bet he thought it was gonna be something big too LOL
Inspiring and beautiful movie. If only people had this much courage to stand up to tyrants in our modern times, I would die for a man like this if he led such a rebellion today.
There is people like this fighting evil everywhere every day an they usually get called a Uncle Tom Martin Luther king was a modern day version of this man and most people marched with him
“The past is never dead. It's not even past.” - William Faulkner This film scares some people not just because it is about our black brothers and sisters rising up against oppression, but because it is an example for all of us of our ability and our right to rise up against oppression.
BIG UP, Brothers & Sisters!
Hope this raises awareness for the slavery that still exists in this world mostly legal in child marriage laws and slavery in the middle east/north africa/islamic world . Learn from the mistakes of the past, end slavery !
Nobody is going to care exactly because the slavers are no longer white people but are in Africa and the Middle East. People are more interested in demonizing whitey then actually doing some good.
Oooh. Finally hits home how demeaning it is to be called boy when you're a full grown man. That tone. And it continued on for quite some time after slavery.
I can't wait to go see this tonight. Just watched the documentary on Netflix last night, "13th"...does it ever put into perspective what has been going on in this country since day 1. I wish more people would take the blockers off of their eyes and open them up to the bigger picture. This original film came out in what? 1915? And it was sickening. Can't wait to see this side.
looks amazing. Glad his history is being made known. God bless the writers actors and director. looks amazing amazing amazing. 12 years a slave made me angry inside. this movie uplifts me inside. we are human beings warriors we are strong. this movie showcases a glimpse of history and the power we possess

I sure did survive slavery. I'm growing up over west bmore. been beat up by cops before for asking for help...yeah attacked and roughed up. I've been denied opportunities because people LABLES us thugs and say we're not smart. did I complain when they made movies about the holocaust. stfu n riot if you don't like it lol fuck is your youtube comments doing...getting film more attention. ty if something is great I expect people to hate. your flawed like me your human. get your head right and see the beauty n this movi3
For all of you who don't know. This was the original birth of a nation from 1915 www.newyorker.com/culture/richard-brody/the-worst-thing-about-birth-of-a-nation-is-how-good-it-is
General consensus on the original: As a film, it revolutionized the industry and helped made it what it is today. The themes displayed, however, are overall racist/outdated.
But why? They could have gone with any other title and they chose the worst one. That's like if a Jewish empowerment film was named The Triumph of the Will. It works as an effective title but we all know why we never used it twice.
+MasterBDG701 agree, they are trying to use it as an empowering and triumphant, "look where we are today" title but it will turn people off being named after the most effective piece of white supremacy propaganda in history.
That is not what the film is; only someone with a very simple mind would say that. IT is meant to show the horrible acts of the times, you can not empathize cause you choose not too. IF you were black in those times would you have done any differently? The who issue in this country is people who choose to lack understanding. They fought cause they had no other choice, those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Those who preach hate and racism however are a blight on society, and I am not talking about jokes. IT is one thing to make a joke to poke fun and try to make something joyous out of something that is horrible. You choose to speak ignorantly, though only those as simple minded as you will agree. I however will post one thoughtful response on each racist post I see, cause freedom of speech means I have the right to speak the facts and truth while you preach nonsense that only easily manipulated fools would agree with.
Movies like this move me. I’m Canadian so to an extent the slave trade isn’t taught in schools but I can only imagine the depth of how these people suffered. Canada has mistreated the First Nation communities, Chinese and Japanese. History is important to learn and be educated in to not repeat history.
Luckily I had a black teacher that taught us about Nat Turner. It wasn't in our history books. He taught outside the book a lot. He used to tell me "The World Is Your Classroom"
"To watch a strong man broken down is a terrible thing."

This looks beautiful, and I love how they reuse the name of a 1915 anti-black film and repurpose it to empower people, and show the evil of that day.

Had a fantastic experience on set. Nate is the coolest and most thoughtful directors I've ever dealt with and he really deserves all the attention he's going to get
Whether you're black or white or whatever, if you're an American, this is your history.
No this is a movie pretending to be history.
+The Cinema Cowboy no, it's history. I don't see anything fake about the plot.
I'll tell more specifically after seeing the movie, but at this point I really doubt it's history, most likely it's a heavy sugar-coating of an actual event.
Real-life Nat Turner called for killing almost every white person that his rebellion faced. They didn't even spare children. Fucking children! (c)
I doubt that it will be addressed in the movie at least in a way, that is historically accurate.
{GD} Phantom X ALT
So killing white children was OK is that what you're saying?
Grim Butcher I'm not saying it was ok. I'm saying that the degree of which he revolted was justified. He was driven nearly insane by the cruelty of the slave owners. Killing children is never acceptable, but if your enemy starts to do it, you might be a little fed up.
Meanwhile everybody else was in the fantasy land of Wakanda. We didn't back this like we backed that.
Because we're tired of having all black movies be about slavery and gangsters. Black Panther offered something new and a good outlook on what our culture could become without the interruption of white people.
dai - who do you presume to speak for besides yourself?
@@darcielizabeth Shut the fuck up.
Probably had something to do with advertising
@Dai, yeah because "slavery" films made by WHITE FOLK - unlike this FREEDOM FIGHTER FILM made by a BLACK MAN - are the same things. THIS WAS OUR BLACK PANTHER, based ON A REAL SUPERHERO, not some WHITE MAN's fantasy of BLACK PEOPLE. WAKANDA is a damn joke.
the trailer alone is so moving. this movie's gonna make me cry my eyes out.
Did they show Nat killing children?
Lee Lorenz Did they show your people killing million of black children ? Stupid fuck.
@@orangewarm1 as a matter of fact they did so fuck you
@@VentureHolly not just that look up the average lifespan of Vikings that played a major role, if we in morden times as men only lived to like 30 the world would be hell
Aaaand this movie pops back up again.
This was truly a honor to be apart of this great film Rest on African Slave ancestors of 1831 Nate Turner 🕊️🕊️🕊️🙏🙏🙏
Go back to Africa so the rest of us can stop listening to the victim-playing BS. No one is stopping you.
Job 31:13-15 "“If I have denied justice to any of my servants,
whether male or female,
when they had a grievance against me,
14 what will I do when God confronts me?
What will I answer when called to account?
15 Did not he who made me in the womb make them?
Did not the same one form us both within our mothers?"
If you are White and you are offended by this movie or Nat Turner, don't see the need for this movie, or this movie makes you feel uneasy; you have some soul searching to do. I say this out of love and hope for the people of this country. A lot of people say that we have enough of these types of movies, but you never hear those grumbles about Holocaust films! It's really time for this country to DEAL with this pain, on both sides, and it's effects on the present so that we can move forward!
Like snoop dog ?
Not that i mind (movie looks good )
I am White and I do feel uneasy about a portrayal of a violent insurrection as a just event when translated to our world today. Violent insurrection is not what we need our Black countrymen to have on their minds today.
+Kurt Vanatta insurrectionary anarchism worked throughout history, and you're apologizing for a hierarchical system.
+Kurt Vanatta It is also not your place to tell what you need for Blacks to do, check your privilege.
Rise up above injustice, oppression, evil and darkness...ALWAYS!!! #RISEUP
You do know Nat Turner was a murderous monster right?
***** Even if that's true, they make more than one comic book movie per year and more than one horror movie per year to but I don't see you saying anything about that.
One day a movie involving race will be released and people will not feel divided - until that day its not a movie that's dividing us.. it's the fact that we are still simply divided.
preachhhh
Well said!
What's dividing us is injustice. Too many people are comfortable with our oppression.
Lea Leandre Did you seriously just say black people ARE, not WERE, but ARE oppressed?
When they stop having BET, Black college fund , Black congress coalition etc we will not be divided.
This movie was amazing, I hope more like these will occur soon and get the recognition it deserves
it's interesting that slaves embraced Christianity. The religion that slave owners used to justify slavery.
Exactly
Ye but these slave knew that the slave owners were justifying it wrongly.
True, but slaves also used the Bible to argue against slavery.
Its interesting that all walks of life experienced slavery. Regardless of the religion that man wrote.
It wasn't the religion that made man evil. It was the choices of man. You see Christians today trying to enslave people? NO. Alright then.
Ouidah is a location, isn't it? Do you mean Vodun?
Learn the history and use it to make the future more united, not to fill your heart with hatred.
the excuses to disown history is just fucking foul. only when a slave movie is released do people say "forget the past". not this time.
Now maybe you will understand why the issue is still so VERY fresh and offensive to blacks. lmao smh cheater ... less than 60 years
There are plenty of lsave movies with worthy heroes, not Nat turner. He's a monster.
Good then you better remember the trans-Mediterranean slave trade you fucking illiterate!
Learn your own history you ignorant uneducated racist pig. Learn about the trans-Mediterranean slave trade and the Moors invasion of Southern Europe you imbecile. No one is hunting blacks but if you want a race war THEN BRING IT ON!
This is a powerful movie. Just saw it
Tony Turner who was the kid at the end who was the spy?
Demoham Cristiano What do you mean? The actor or his role in the movie?
Tony Turner either one because I'm trying to find out who was the kid who was spying on them and then told the slave owners, if I find out the actors name I can find out who it was by searching it up, but if you knew who it was then that would be great:) I think it's Frederick Douglas? Is it?
Demoham Cristiano I do know it is not Frederick Douglas
Tony Turner Frederick Douglass was a former slave who spoke for African Americans back in the day
the irony of so many people being triggered by a piece of artwork like a movie is kind of sad. get over yourselves its just a movie.
*****
i mean people pretending this is part of a conspiracy to make white people look bad. if showing the cultural context of the time and place is some how offensive to you then yes you are triggered. ps how the fuck do you know i am privileged when you know nothing about me?
no shit! when did i ever suggest the slaves depicted had it better than modern day youtube users? jesus christ you're full of yourself. thanks for pointing out the obvious and completely missing the point.
***** my bad.
Jama M Jama exactly its funny too troll tho lmao
The greater irony is that these are supposedly the same people who never get triggered and hate politically correct, and want things to be said "like it is"; they are supposedly the ones who fight against trigger warnings and hyper-touchy SJWs. Now of course, that only applies if its THEIR triggering and THEIR politically incorrect and THEIR "like it is" version.
Why are people so butt hurt about the historical inaccuracies in this movie? Brave Heart was pretty inaccurate too and it won best picture!
It's almost as if they forgot that they were watching a movie and that all biopics have historical inaccuracies. People look for any excuse to be outraged.
tom S. you understand its just a movie if they want the full story they can go read the book about it
Servo Because this shit wants to portray a genocidal maniac as a hero. Well he wasn't, he was a maniac who killed little kids and also raped white women. None would have him so it lead to frustrations. White women back then stayed away from black people.
braveheart was stupid and unwatchable to anyone with any real knowledge of that period of history.
I remember going to the theatre years ago to watch the original Birth of a Nation when it first came out, this one should bring back memories.
That movie is 91 years old
+Russell M Actually it's 101 years old and I remember it especially because of the scene with Rihanna in it. Her acting was pretty good.

This film shoulda got a lot of awards.
❤
❤ Thank you
"black people are the most beautiful people", if this is true, then why do blk men always want to upgrade and marry white women when they become successful? Think carefully before you answer.
@@doberman2yk Success is subjective and not all blk men who obtained money run to marry white women. Those who do are part of an industry that believes if you look the part you can further advance your career. There’s 100 of thousands who of blk men and women who refuse to follow that doctrine. My question is if you have disdain for blk folk then why are you here? I’m sure it’s a school, church or grocery store you inflict your hatred upon.
im blessed and glad to be able to be taught in school as a child about nat turner..most kids these days will never know or be taught his story its a shame..
Slavery is just a figure of speech. Call it what it is: low wages.
+kreek22 What wages???
*Violets and Blues
Did you think the trip from Africa to America was free? Whites didn't get free trips. They either paid up front or they paid on the backend by doing indentured servitude. Blacks paid with their labor. And they were very well fed compared to Europe or Asia. Apparently blacks are pretty happy with escaping Africa. They never go back.
kreek22 get ready for slavery white boy KJV revelation 13:9-10
He did the right thing fighting back im white and i have always thought slavery was a despicable thing and never should have ever happened
It did happened, and we should learn from it. To never do such thing to another again.
Saw this yesterday and it was AMAZING! Go see it! Such a beautiful movie.
Which part was beautiful?
I won't ruin it for you. But it basically shows that not all slaves were stupid and submissive. Every movie that currently exists tries to show how white people (like abraham lincoln) saved us poor, uneducated, helpless black people.
Abraham Lincoln couldn't give less than 2 fucks about the Stolen Africans in America, and much less about their emancipation. That bullshit Proclamation was ONLY put into place as a means of cutting off one of the South's primary means of income: Slave labor.
Agreed. It was a largely tactical move. As we all know by now Lincoln had slaves.
Cecil Kinsey Not quite sure what point you're trying to make???
my people :-( I love you each and every one of you. lets keep our heads up. Yahshua is on his way. we all got to love and help one another. lets rise. together.

Thank you for making this film. We need to know this!
Cried my eyes out watching this movie, WoW! This movie is so good..... It is not much different than today, sadly. Now I completely understand the meaning from BLM and I can definitely feel the pain of my people, we need to uplift not put one another down.
This is definitely on the go see list...I'm happy they chose the name for this movie.
I think this guy lacks gratitude: he was rescued from Africa! So what if he had to accept low wages for a few years?

Dopeness!!! Thought I could use a break with movies about slavery for a little while after watching 12 years a slave but this has more than peeked my interests. Its all about how a story is told and this looks damn good!
*piqued
+Randall Starr Randal Star
I was being quite polite, you know. Not everyone knows the word is actually "piqued" and I was tactfully saving him some minor embarrassment in the future (a company-wide email, for instance). Not everything should be met with a nasty attitude and stupid crap.
Randall Starr Never embarrassed bruh. If I knew this was a English exam I would have used spell check....but it's not. You get my meaning...
Spell check doesn't work on properly spelled words, such as "peeked." That's exactly how we wound up with millions of Americans who don't know "your" from "you're" or "there" from "they're."
If you STILL don't recognize a minor good deed when you see one, then maybe you need a bit of an attitude adjustment.
Truth is colored folks still have those ropes around our necks it’s just financially. They learn that beatings was less useful then financial slavery
That was the SICKEST part of the whole movie! I was LIVID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🤬

I agree❣️ Sadly, we are no different now, what have we learned? May we modern people be as brave to stand up against such unrighteousness.
so ready for this movie. hope the academy awards and the rest of the world is too.

+Jakob Will you do know the title was on purpose right?
ya think?
General consensus on the original:
As a film, it revolutionized the industry and helped made it what it is today.
''Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere"
Nothing like resurrecting contempt for today's people who never owned slaves amongst today's people never were slaves.
Phenomenal movie. Thank You Nate Parker!

It seems to be a good movie, don't know why so much people dislike this
My friend saw the movie and said it was fantastic.
This brings me to tears every time.
Movies like this move me. I’m Canadian so to an extent the slave trade isn’t taught in schools but I can only imagine the depth of how these people suffered. Canada has mistreated the First Nation communities, Chinese and Japanese. History is important to learn and be educated in to not repeat history.
Disappointed that this film has its title... Now people are gonna forget the original "Birth of a Nation" classic.
you're joking right? people won't forget because it's in the books as one of the highest grossing movies in America, and it was SUPER racist
+jcage #mk if by SUPER racist you mean SUPER awesome

It is also ridiculous to make a murderous schizophrenic like Nat Turner seem like a hero when he killed innocent women and children.
