This song is really about Ren's friend Joe, and is written from the perspective of how Joe, a normally a full of fun person, was probably suffering from depression leading up to his final walk onto the bridge.. e.g. "I forgot how to be me."
They are singing about how grief makes you forget how to be yourself. It happens, for sure. And "all my riches turned to dust / have I lost the Midas touch / or do sad eyes blind me?" is about how, in grief, things you used to cherish lose their value, especially material things like "riches." Great reaction, Ren and Chinchilla together definitely create something new than either of them on their own. That new thing is pure magic!
if you haven't watch them yet Ren has told his entire story in 8 chapters u will learn about everything he went though with his health but you will learn about how he meet his first girlfriend and so much more i really hope u all watch them
I literally cam ehere to say this ...its a great but hard watch hard to listen to but its so engaging as is everything this dude does. What a story he has of loss, helplessness, despair love and hope. I am a man and idk if I could have persevered the way this young man has throughout what seemed a hopeless situation what a story, what an artist, what a human being.
when you are mourning the loss of some one very close all that went before is lost too. The pre-you and your "kingdom" are all lost so how do you carry on without the "you " that you knew.
8:08 consider all the things he's gone through that can alienate a person from huge parts of their own self... losing his best friend Joe to su|cide being the example touched on in this very song... 😶
Exactly! Ren lost a large chunk of his youth quite ill until he got his diagnosis of Lyme disease, only in recent times has he been on the road to improved health. He spent so much time, sick & ill in bed not knowing what could be done, everything he had achieved musically in the past became a sign of a past time when he was able. So I think it can be very easy to lose oneself with the amount of physical, emotional & mentally pain he endured before his Treatment for Lyme disease.
Ren, when asked about collaborating with other artists, said "With Daisy (that's Daisy Matilda Bertenshaw AKA Chinchilla) like, we'll chip in for each other's bits, and the emotion of each other's bits. We're on more of an equal footing."
Ren calls Chinchilla his musical sibling. Just leaving this here. Also this song is entirely Chinchillas, its about Ren's friend but damn does she own it with this performance.
These 2 go together like peanut butter and jelly 😂, I'm surprised they don't have more collaborations than they do. Chinchilla was on The Voice UK last year but was eliminated in the Knockout Rounds. Puff puff pass 🙌🤙✌️
It's a very intimate performance. I almost feel like I'm intruding watching them . With all he's been through I'd be surprised if he didn't lose himself and forgot how to be "me" along the way.
When you spend a lot of time alone, like in bed ill for example, or just chilling in the mountains like me. If/when you get back out there, you won’t be the same, you won’t feel different but you will be socially awkward, you will have forgotten how to be you. It’s not permanent, a little effort and practice, you will get it back but that doesn’t make it easy.
They're so awesome together. ❤ Right before Hi Ren he shared one of his old health vlogs. You seen see on that heartbreaking video that he had lost so much of himself. It makes seeing him now so much more intensely joyful.
An early masterpiece is Crutch. Now that is heavy and beautiful, he made it to help others. If you really want to know who Ren is, as a person, watch his thank you for 1 million subscribers, it is awesome.
It's musical Alchemy: healing through exploration of the human condition via creative expression. The energy of that process lingers... transmuting the darkness. We somehow experience the wound & it's healing simultaneously: its beautiful, sweet sorrow.
He is telling a true story here. I believe he was in year 1 of his illness when he lost his best friend Joe to "that S word". He was very much in a dark place beyond that - see his song Troubles to get a much clearer idea of the hell he went through. It was the loss of two of his friends, one intentional and one accidental that helped him fight so very hard to stay alive through all of that.
I have to wonder if you have read or heard Rens story? All of the suffering, misdiagnosed Lyme disease, psychotropic drugs that damaged him permanently. The damage to the brains myelin sheath. Stem cell transplant. His still inability to eat except completely mashed up food, the times he slept 23 hours a day. Disabling pain everywhere. Chronic fatigue syndrome, total autoimmunity. As well as losing his best friend brother Joe to suicide at age 17. Grief never healed. As someone living with major chronic illness, I know personally how it robs you of doing all the things that made you you! I was a dancer no longer. Motherly duties gone. Not taking/picking my kids up from school, being there for activities, homework, cooking any meals. Of course you forget how to be yourself! And Ren spent years in bed, in pain, not eating, grieving his friend and his life. No more music at all. Being a shadow of yourself! Ps: I really hope The three of you realize how blessed you are to have each other. I have long to have any relationship with friends like you do. With my illnesses, your world gets so small that I don’t have a single friend to call on to meet for lunch or coffee or come over and hang out to watch a show or chat on the phone. I love watching the three of you together. Please watch Ren X chinchilla chalk outlines. And also Ren For Joe! And possibly an interview he did about his journey with his health so far.❤🫂✌️
Since you like Chinchilla alot she has her own music as well her new stuff is awesome like 1:5 that one might make you a little emotional. Keep up the great reactions
this song is about his friend Joe Hughes if u don't know Ren got a call from his friend Ella at 3am she told him Joe was on bridge crying wanted her to call tell everyone bye for him he get out bed but his clothes on took of running he live like 10 minutes from the bridge he knew if he ran he could take in half the time he was calling Joe phone it was busy so he knew Joe was still on the phone last time he called he got no service he got there 2 Minutes to late they never did find Joe body
@@larka742no that is a rumour that got spread in comments They are on a rooftop in Brighton The bridge is a couple of hundred miles away and probably quite a windy environment It joins the island of Anglesey to the mainland of Wales
I think when he's saying, "I forgot how to be me" he's referring to his friend Joe who killed himself and the process of depression that leaves you a shell of yourself.

You have to listen to chalk outlines with both of them, great

Ren has a new song coming out this month from his new album called Slaughterhouse
You have to react to Chalk Outlines by them.........
Second this!!
here's a third!
Always play this straight after Chalk Outlines (live)

R.I.P.JOE HUGHES, Thank you for reacting to this one sending big love from the UK ❤❤❤
This song was co-written by Chinchilla!
Just the last verse is for Joe. The rest is Ren confined to his bed and his hellish struggles. Thanks, Ladies.

Crutch is just beautyfully filmed.
💯 agree with this comment ❤❤

If you rewind a little, after pausing, you won't miss anything. :)

The song is about the loss of his friend to suicide when Ren was young and how it affected him so badly and continuously that he lost himself in grief
Nice one ladies. Didn't realise you hadn't done this one before.

isnt it performed next to the bridge. And the song is in Joes perspective.

They are on a rooftop in Brighton

It joins the island of Anglesey to the mainland of Wales
@@helenjarvis7755 - correct, it's the roof terrance of their old management's recording studio overlooking Brighton.
You have to watch REN for Joe. Live on the piano in Canada.
The song except the last line is from Joes perspective.... "Joes" words, and his experience
