I really enjoy your ABBA reactions. Especially "The Visitors", also the fact that you included it`s last two singles. I would love to see you do video for the last two songs from those 1982 sessions, "I Am The City" ( which was released 11-12 years later on ABBA More Gold ) and which I consider to be one of their best(its clearly Not finished/polished). the other one "Just like that" is even less so*(clearly being a demo) but still its not hard to consider it a Would-Be-Classic. Thank You for Your Dedication, it really shows. x MM

@@popcornphilosopher I'll be working my way through your posts. I'm late to the party. Your personality and graphics are such a treat and I'm in a very good mood after tuning into your stuff. So life-affirming! I've loved Abba since I saw them in the Eurovision Contest on TV in 1974. My focus might have been on other music by 1982, but when I listen to the Visitors now, I'm utterly astonished by it! I'm so tuned into your own obvious passion.

independing on how the song was thought originally I like the rather existential interpretation of that she is dead and in the very last moments of floating away the day is retrospected ... the last scenes are evening, watching tv, reading the book (only in this book the train love story happens but not really, its just still in her half-dream), she makes the light off, hears a noise at the roof... midnight, now is the day (!), the murderer (HE is the 'he') is coming ...

It's good that you made two separate videos, one with the songs and your reaction, and another with your research, which is really very interesting
I like the parallelism and contrasts you made with the songs and their comparison with the possible realities of Agnetha and Frida at the end
(Agnetha's loneliness and closure, Frida's frustration and incomprehension)
And it's great that you consulted Bobby's brother's channel, he does very good research and videos, with great production
Beyond my lesser taste for "The Day Before You Came", the story is fascinating, even though it is sad
    and very sad for ABBA
It is said that the producing engineer Míchel Tretow felt that it was the end of ABBA, that Agnetha recorded her track, hung up the headphones and it was her last time with ABBA, that the feeling was one of general sadness
(despite the interviews and performances to celebrate Their 10 years as a quartet)
but I must admit that I like that melody better alone on the piano, which I think is in Benny's repertoire
About the lyrics, rhythm and interpretation, I compare it more with
    "The winner takes It all":
same protagonists, a story told from beginning to end, linear song without chorus,
the difference for me is that
"The winner takes It all" has all the power and magic of ABBA production
    the other one doesn't
but since the vast majority of fans like it, I would be the wrong one, because that song doesn't fit or grow in me
It happens the other way around for me with another song, the iconic "Waterloo"
    (the winner of Eurovision 1974)
that fans underestimate it a lot, while for me is Top3 in the entire history of ABBA
but these are tastes and opinions hahaha
PS: I don't think that you like much more
"Ring ring" or "I do I do I do I do I do"
because it's from a more lyrical and younger era of ABBA
but I hope you reach them
Its a pleasure to see you
    My best regards from.

You know you might be right about that. I was impressed with how beautiful the day before you came sounded on the piano. It just really highlighted how beautiful melody is. Thank you. Great analysis and commentary. Day Before You Came has long been one of my favorite ABBA songs (top 3 with Winner Takes It All, their best song compositionally, and Gimme Gimme Gimme, their best song production-wise.) I had never thought of the sonic connection between Day Before You Came and the song it reminded you of, but now I can’t unhear it. I've just returned home from watching ABBA The Movie in Cape Town. There is another showing on Tuesday. I saw the movie originally in the 1970s and never again until this afternoon. Before the movie started there were short clips about Abba The Museum and The Voyage Show in London. And after the movie there were 3 Abba lyrics music videos and the audience was asked to stay and sing along (Dancing Queen, Voulez Vous and Gimme Gimme Gimme). Some audience members got up and danced and I heard some singing but everyone stayed until the end. The movie was as I remembered: the story line was not good, but the lots and lots of live action visuals of ABBA in concert were absolutely great. It was a lovely afternoon....

These tracks were not intended for The Visitors (except Should I laugh and cry). They had a plan for a new album in 1983, and recorded I am the city and Just like that for that. When those plans were scraped they put them aside and instead recorded Under Attack and The Day before you came as singels for their double LP The first ten years (1982). Cassandra and the quite strange You owe me one became B-sides.
Its quite interesting to note, as you describe regarding Cassandra, that B&B often worked on songs for years.
I am the city actually lends several parts from Inga Theme (a film track for a soft pxrn film named Inga. It was the B-side on their first singel Shes my kind of girl in 1970.
Under Attack lends bits from Under My Sun, Rubber ball man (demos).

Great catch with Dirty Laundry by the way, there’s a clear similarity. There’s an interview with Steve Porcaro somewhere, where he explains how he hooked up a drum machine to some sort of gate if I remember correctly, in order to produce that programmed-sounding keyboard part. Steve was a bleeding edge synth tech magician who helped all the big producers in LA with novel solutions like that. But it wouldn’t surprise me if Michael B Tretow came up with something very similar, totally independently - he’s been called a genius by more than one.

    • @popcornphilosopher

There was a book that mentioned what effect was used by Mr Tretow. But now I can’t find it of course. I don’t remember it being a drum machine though but it would be interesting if it was! Schlager must seem very exotic to American ears, (and it increasingly is to European ears as well). Like Mr Palm explains, it’s music not based on the African-American musical traditions. But it’s also a very continental European thing, and as such I think it’s safe to say it has roots in the folk music of the respective European country. Swedish folk music is certainly one of ABBA’s influences - (Benny even has a side project, a band that plays traditional Swedish folk music, in which he usually plays the accordion) - and so was schlager. But at the end of the day, what got Benny and Bjorn into playing in bands in the first place was rock’n’roll and specifically The Beatles. Agnetha was very much a schlager artist before ABBA though, and to some extent Frida too, although she sang jazz as well. Lastly, the kitsch fest that is Eurovision Song Contest was traditionally all about schlager. So one can only imagine the impact ABBA had in 1974 with that glam rock number, in the middle of all the old-fashioned schlager music.

Really fascinating interpretations of these songs, thank you. Agnetha had some interest in an acting career, and in 1983 she starred in a Swedish movie, Raskenstam, about a womaniser. Frida was in a Swedish film, too, in 1979, Walk on Water if you Can, though that one I haven’t seen. This final single works as a duo because of the storytelling commonality, I think, with both Agnetha and Frida playing parts in the respective dramas. (Also, Agnetha’s co-star and director of Raskenstam was Gunnar Hellstrom, who had directed and appeared in episodes of Dallas. Leading to weird speculation at the time that Agnetha was going to join the cast of Dallas - highly unlikely given she had sworn off touring to be with her children.)

really love your takes on the recordings, maybe not agreeing on everything, but mostly and everyone is entitled to have its own approach on it... the lyrics of TDBYC is interpreted in various strange directions... but i see your point in both women in one way or the other suffered more from the divorces whereas the boys smoothly transitioned into other long lasting relation ships with "new" children etc. The ladies were obviously left a bit behind. they might have been dating, but it's clear they dealt differently, like women very often do.. PS. i still do not see the last tracks as real bonus of The Visitors. It was a year later, destined for another album and for me have nothing to do with The Visitors. I see they are on the cds now, but for me there is no real connection. That said, i bought the original album in December 1981 and the singles a year later. For that were ages apart back then...

Yeah, I know there are many wild theories about TDBYC. Including murder, which I didn’t include. But will be a part of a short. And that’s why I put tragic women in quotation marks because I don’t think they really are. It’s just the Media’s perception of them and interesting that these songs, in a small way mirrored that perception.
And I know these tracks are not part of the visitors, but I am kind of dealing with them that way. Since I just finished the visitors and many people wanted me to do the “bonus tracks”.

Never heard of that Put On Your White Sombrero was a forerunner of Cassandra. It’s not entirely a different song but i don’t hear much similarities in terms of melody or production besides those songs are inspired by german schlager that have influenced Benny and Björn as songwriters. Also Cassandra is a b side that i’m sure of wouldn’t make a cut on the next ABBA album that never happened. Frida herself said she doesn’t care much about that song. Oouuuh, German Schlager is not only Oompa-Boompa. 😆 Some songs are as dark as or even darker than The Day Before You Came... Just listen to songs from Juliane Werding like 'Starke Gefühle', 'Das Würfelspiel' or 'Am Tag, als Conny Cramer starb'...

That was only part of the clip. You might’ve missed that I captioned the rest of it. I just thought it was pertinent because Id always detected German influences in abba’s music and Cassandra but I wasn’t sure why until I heard that clip. I have to check out those songs you mentioned!

@@popcornphilosopher All three songs are from Juliane Werding. Which one do you mean? Some people say she had Germanys most emotional voice. I think one can hear it the best in 'Am Tag, als Conny Kramer starb'. She was 15 when she sang it.
