Great video! I was interested in getting perspectives on Catalyst from more serious drivers and this is just the ticket! It was great that you compared the Solo data analysis process with your flow with the Catalyst. I personally enjoy my data analysis time after a track day, which includes overlaying telemetry on my videos for RUclips, but it is definitely time consuming. The Catalyst sounds like it does a great job at its intended purpose, real time feedback on track, as well as the ability to quickly and immediately review where to find time after a session. Now if they would only add CAN bus logging.... Keep up the great videos!

This was the best review I have seen from real racers! Thanks so much for taking the time to show us the features.

Great video guys. I happened to run into one of the developers of the Catalyst at Worldwide technology raceway (gateway) and was really impressed with the software behind it. I ended up ordering one. I like how you can now have video overlay with the latest update. only down side is I wish there was a way to get OBD car data into it.

Awesome review, I’ve been using butt data for a few years with aim solo no DL for NASA TT. I’ve been using live +/- lap times on my solo while racing trying to figuring out where I’m losing time for each corner scratching my head in the process trying to find improvement. This looks super simple to use to help improve my times. Will definitely get Garmin due to the ease and simplicity instead of trying to read aim solo ekg’s lol.Thank you again for this detailed review, you two just solidified my decision!

I have been reviewing most of these products via RUclips and forums. It appears that the big problem that I would have with the Garmin Catalyst is the lack of vehicle data. It does not gather RPM, Throttle or Brake pressure, cannot report oil temperature, etc, etc. It's just GPS + Video... while the AiM Solo 2 DL has an OBD2 interface that can gather all of the data you need, so you can see at what point you start braking and if you're going WOT early enough, if your car is running too hot, etc. This seems like a big gap in functionality to me, and the Garmin is way more expensive than the AiM.

Perfect, was gonna get an aim solo for lap times, but will likely go with the garmin!
Only thing now missing is tire temperature/pressure telemetry. Closest thing is Michelin Connect....

A couple of seconds off your best lap time with the Catalyst is HUGE. This unit looks like a great learning tool. Just bought one..so I'm anxious to see how "user friendly" it is, as I'm not too comfortable with data interface..aka..overwhelmed. Been using a Solo for years. Thanks for this vid.

Thank you for such a great review! I appreciate the thoughtful comparison. I wonder how it would also compare to AEM data logging or others on the market? Or if it's even close
Thanks! Great video, I hope to see more!

Thanks a ton for that breakdown. Currently running a Solo 2 DL in the S2k, however it's an early car, so no decent CAN data to record :-(. The Garmin seemed REALLY darn good for my needs, real-time improvements and super quick data checking. The only thing i'd love to see with the Garmin is a OBD2 input and a way to export the data/video to a computer for more detailed data sessions.
Thanks again, going to have to see about snagging one for next event.
    Cheers!

    Hey hoping someone see this
But we run oval racing and are looking for something with live delta for optimal qualifying laps but the few budget one we have tried are slow on showing live delta pass the line, on ovals a 5 sec delay you have already missed the entry into turn 1.
Was just wonder if this has the capability of improving on that thanks.

Hey guys, thanks for the review. We do alot of endurance racing of 16hr & 24 hr races , with multiple drivers. How big is the memory in this unit and will it save each of our drivers ,1 to 2hr sessions each per day ? Does it stop automatically when we come into the pits and do a quick driver change, then the next driver just has to hit start again.
    Appreciate your time and imput.
    Cheers Chris

Hi, it will save each of your drivers. I don't know exactly the max number but Justin and I go back in forth when we share my car. It does not stop automatically BUT it has a pop up message when you get off track that will ask you if you want to end the session or not. The power can be ran to your battery so you know that it will last the entire time for endurance races. I think it would be super helpful and I don't feel its outrageous in price for what it offers.

Can you mount the Garmin on the dashboard in the center of the car (ie where a radio would be) or does it need to be higher up on the windshield ?

Since you didn't mention it, I take it that you've not had a problem with it falling off of the magnet during a race? Seems pretty easy to get it to release from the magnet.
