Would you consider making one to sell? I’ve been thinking of this same design for a while now, but mainly because the tires are heavy and you can just fold it down to access it instead of trying to load it on the top rack ( my muscles are a little smaller than yours lol), and also I don’t have the equipment and your expertise, this would be perfect for my Burb, hope you would consider it!
I REALLY like this idea. I have a 2004 Lifted Suburban on 35s id like this for long trips. I'm in Vegas so I'm spoiled with a lot of Off roading close to me, but I would definitely like to take a spare sometimes. I usually travel with a truck load of kids and my wife and all their stuff lol so this would be perfect. Don't have a welder but maybe I can talk someone into a favor if i gather the materials. Keep up the good work, been a subscriber for a while. You're a good dude and I like that you're a family man like myself.

Great build. I saw one on a Russian cargo truck and had the same epiphany. When you have a big ol tire to dismount, having it lower to the ground can save your back! .
I saw this hitch tire carrier on a Grand Cherokee a year ago and loved the look and the ability to remove so simply. Long story short I made my own for my own Grand Cherokee and I personally don't give a crap of peoples opinion who don't like it, I personally haven't had anyone give me negative feedback. Smart design, i love it, makes sense! I used 2 inch 1/4 thick diameter extension on my engine crane. That shit aint breaking any time soon lifting 500lbs engines…. So yeah that’s definitely overbuilt but keep the hater’s hating, LOL! Good job!
Just what I’ve been looking for! Although I was thinking swing left or right and then also rotate the wheel to tuck away under my tailgate. This way I’m still able use the tailgate when camping. Excellent and entertaining video. Thanks for you time and effort.
Got to vote for the tailgate over the barn doors. Great place to sit or picnic. Can roll the rear window down and cruise around town or on the beach. Great for dogs. Well and it just looks better…… :)
When I bought my used home-made receiver for my K5, the owner that built it put two extra receivers on the ends so he could attach "accessories". That could be the answer as well: TWO barrel hinges, and you could offset the carrier so that you could access one barn door without lowering the tire carrier. and use a third receiver to mount something "else" to the back (jerry can?) Done! That's the idea for your next video. I expect a little better video of the construction next time. You're welcome.

I didn’t see the hinge at first either. I made one out of 2x2 and made it rigid. I already want to modify it to add a hinge because I have the tailgate rear. I actually prefer that. For me, the hinge would put the tire on the ground like yours and give me a step to access the rear! Thanks for the inspiration!! Love the videos. Keep it going. !!

@@MerricksGarage I can imagine you just have that personality! My journey with a tailgate suburban all started with a 1991 K2500, 454 two-wheel drive. My ex-wife and I would take our firstborn to wherever and at the end would either change his diaper, wipe him down or just sit and eat on the tailgate. Unfortunately that suburban was stolen. Now enter my 1992 k1500, 4x4, 5.7, which I still have to this very day and now it has been seventeen years since ownership. This tailgate has seen more diapers changes, crumbs, snacks, feets and butts than ever before. Seven kids later...lol. Now that my older kids have their own cars it's time to build my dream truck, tailgate and all!
I definitely agree with your assessment of swing-outs. The lack of strength has been my hesitation in designing one. Your current design is much better than the first one. But that’s always how it goes and some people don’t understand that. Curt makes a tire carrier very similar to this one that is no where near as beefy.
Honestly, i don't know why people get so butt-hurt over someone else's ideas....someone else's truck. Don't like someones build, then DON'T do it to your truck and design your own, but make a video explaining why your design is better...it's only fair that if people can angrily express their dislikes. They can provide a thesis, presenting a better design. I think it's an excellent design and adds an extra rigidity to an already rigid and sturdy truck!
You are definitely using the right materials for this tire carrier. I wonder if you could create a 2nd attachment point to a bracket that fits between the barn doors. This bracket would attach to the side of the door and stick out through the door gap. 3/16" plate would work if you have 1/4" gap between those barn doors. You can use grade 8 hardware or quick release to secure it to carrier in double shear. You also need to consider protecting the paint from rubbing on the bracket so a thinner bracket might be necessary. 1/8" plate might work if you made the bracket tall enough and used the extra length to distribute the load more. Can you get 1/8" hardened plate? That would put the naysayers in their place.
The modular aspect of using the receiver allows you to move it from one vehicle to another easily. One day will build one for myself much like yours Nicely done Merrick
yea, that was what attracted me to it. One size fits all kinda thing. I am just wrapping up a winch tray for the burb thats gonna be hitch receiver mounted. Just working on the front hitch behind the license plate

I'm glad you didn't grind all the weld reinforcement off like alot of people do.I think I would of made it angled forward to close the gap between the doors and the tire.Thats just my thoughts. Nice work all in all.I like it.
I bet you would like to have that full hydraulic crane spare tire carrier like the one you saw on that 8-ton military truck in your last video. My square body is a long bed crew cab so I have a pre-runner tripod type in the bed.
I like it. Any way to get the tire to fit much closer to the truck without touching the glass, etc.? If so I think it would look much sleeker. Maybe a bend just above the mount to lean it back more?? Nice job.

Especially with those barn doors, the way it folds down wouldn't be a good idea to weld a couple of small plates on the back to use as steps to reach inside your cargo area when is fold down and the doors open? It’s your truck so it is what it is. I really think a swing out deal is better because it looks cool. Also never a bad idea to have a spare no matter what. I like the folding idea though. I’m thinking combining both ideas would be a good idea. The burbs have a whole lotta ass so it messes with the departure angle. We all know this. I wonder what it would look like have a spare time pretty much flat against the driver side barn door glass would look like. Yea itd be super high but If it folded down as well it wouldn’t be a problem. More weight up high I know but could put a tool box or something underneath it and gas cans or something.
im still trying to find or make a tire carrier for my 44s. thinking of the hitch aswell but they move around and to figure out a super strong setup without being hugely gawedy is super tough...i dont care for it in the bed
With that hitch plate and u - bolt the movement is minimal. But thats on the road. IMO it's the strongest mount on the rear of the truck by far. Anything I mount anywhere else takes the mass off axis and increases leverage. The swing outs are the worst. Moving the leverage point to a bumper thats 18" away from center line. I've seen many swing outs rip out, bend the bumper or just rattle so damn much you wish they weren't there in the first place.
@@MerricksGarage I do like your idea, and the video gives me hope to be able to make something work and get my bed space back (big tire problems). i think anything over a 37" tire should have a space at least most of the time. Can't put a 33"/ 35" tire as a spare for a 44" or larger. May be able to get away with it for a short distance on a 38", but not long. Ive had more people suggest a roof rack or bed rack. I think they are nuts. Ill let them get a 175 lb. tire off of that height lol. hope you don't mind if i use some of the building ideas from your video. edit: i just saw people asking if youd build one.. id be interested in a price and if it can be made to accommodate a 44 x 18.5 x 16.5 on a trailer hitch on an 05 silverado SAS

I have seen it. I like it but the weight and $ are deterrents. It's overly complex for what Im trying to accomplish. I do think that if you are gonna do a swing out, that is the best way to do it.

People on the internet need to get a life. That tire carrier is made out of the right stuff and it’s not going anywhere. What about the children? Well we used to ride in the back of pickup trucks down the highway. Imagine how that would trigger the safety Nazis now.
The one thing I would want to do different is to have the fold down be latched with a pin-- rather than having to use your impact every time you want to fold it down real quick..
@@MerricksGarage not necessarily. If you made the whole very close in size to the pin that you are using, then it would reduce the rattling but it is a trade off your sacrificing convenience for quietness
@@yermoffroad There are ways to offset the hole just a bit, and slowly file it into place; granted you'll have to fight your pin in and out every time, and as it wears- it will get more and more loose. Also you can use a tapered pin that wedges into place. Or use a tapered L shaped pin that has threads on the end, that way you can snug it up using anything as a hammer. At least then if you get stuck without your sockets or wrenches, you can just tap your pin loose with a rock or log or anything laying around (by spinning it with the L-shaped handle). IDK, My 97 Isuzu Rodeo has a swing out rack and I've never really noticed it rattling.. He could have at least mounted it off to the side (covering one door) where he can open one of the barn doors in the rear.. I'm just spit balling.. I think blocking the doors is going to be way more inconvenient than is being anticipated here; and way more annoying that a "rattle". I guess he just doesn't plan on using the rear very often, until he's at location and setting up camp. Either way, it's easy to just build it again if he wants. After using it for months, he'll probably dream up a better way to make it all happen. That's the power of iterations.

A swingout carrier still support the load on both sides. Tools to remove is fine. Barn doors rule!

Very similar to what I’ve been thinking out in my head. My k5 only has 26 gal tank so I’d like to mount a rotopax opposite the tire, facing the truck.
With all this shit popping off you've got great vehicle for a great bug out.

Yea but the whole exercise was to keep it light and minimal. Easy to remove etc. any tools etc go inside.
Good idea, but would not work here in Germany. As every accessory needs to have a certificate, that is has been proved 😢

Fold down/swing out tire carrier = whatever works for the situation. OR mount it on the roof (Roof rack).
I want it easy to get to and remove. As much as I wanna feel superhuman, getting this big girl up on the roof would be a stretch!

The one thing I would want to do different is to have the fold down be latched with a pin-- rather than having to use your impact every time you want to fold it down real quick..
But that would rattle and put more stress on the fasterner
@@MerricksGarage not necessarily. If you made the whole very close in size to the pin that you are using, then it would reduce the rattling but it is a trade off your sacrificing convenience for quietness

@@yermoffroad There are ways to offset the hole just a bit, and slowly file it into place; granted you'll have to fight your pin in and out every time, and as it wears- it will get more and more loose. Also you can use a tapered pin that wedges into place. Or use a tapered L shaped pin that has threads on the end, that way you can snug it up using anything as a hammer. At least then if you get stuck without your sockets or wrenches, you can just tap your pin loose with a rock or log or anything laying around (by spinning it with the L-shaped handle). IDK, My 97 Isuzu Rodeo has a swing out rack and I've never really noticed it rattling.. He could have at least mounted it off to the side (covering one door) where he can open one of the barn doors in the rear.. I'm just spit balling.. I think blocking the doors is going to be way more inconvenient than is being anticipated here; and way more annoying that a "rattle". I guess he just doesn't plan on using the rear very often, until he's at location and setting up camp. Either way, it's easy to just build it again if he wants. After using it for months, he'll probably dream up a better way to make it all happen. That's the power of iterations.
