- Our Waterford Weekend bonus videos continue! And it’s a lovely Spring Sunday, but there’s no time for relaxing - not with a disused railway line on your doorstep. Today our adventurers have hired bikes for a trip down the scenic Waterford Greenway.
Vicki and Geoff are travelling to 198 railway stations in Ireland and Northern Ireland!
All The Stations - Ireland sees the duo exploring the length and breadth of the Iarnród Éireann and Northern Ireland Railways networks. Along the way, they'll meet the communities connected to the lines, interview local people and those who work on the railways, to find out about their experiences of travelling by train.
To The Book! "The Railway Adventures" is published by September Publishing and was released in October 2018. It accompanies the 2017 'All The Stations' adventure, when we travelled to all 2,563 railway stations in Great Britain. Available here: www.amzn.com/19...
You can see a progress map and station count on the website: www.allthestati...
Thanks for the shout out. Greetings from Denmark. :)
Interesting Suir Valley Railway fact #1: the tracks are not the usual small rails used by narrow gauge lines, they are full size track panels, mostly from when that line was full size, re-gauged.
#2: the locos are ex-Bord na Mona, which is the peat producing board, from various peat fields in the midlands.
I would love to do this. So jealous.
Main difference between England and Ireland: "Shall we get the going through the tunnel shot?.....Done. Hang on where's the camera gone?"
Frishmeister79 bet you’re hoping for a hard brexit
In all seriousness, really do watch your equipment. Some folk wouldn't think twice about it!
i look forward to your videos each night
As someone from Waterford thank you for giving the world a view on Waterford. I actually live 15 minute walk from the Plunkett Station and the Greenway.
What cute little locomotives...
I live in kilmeaden and used to volunteer in the suir (pronounced like sure) valley railway as I live less than a 5 minute walk away so glad to see you both enjoy it so much . Wish I had been home when ye were there ! 😂 and I’ll tell the lovely people about he bike rack suggestions !
Emily Casey do you remember my late friend Stephen Dee who used to drive the train sometimes?
The bike rack thing is very doable, even on 15-inch gauge at a pinch:

Hi Geoff and Vicki!!! I had never been this early before when I watch your videos. It's 2AM here in the Philippines and I really love watching your journey on the trains. I hope you two have a wonderful time there in Ireland!!!
Not many train lines in the Philippines are there. None in Davao or any of Mindanao I think, an area I have been to three times. I am from the UK by the way. I believe there are plans to link Davao with Cagayan De Oro by rail, and put a light rail/tram system in the Davao area too, but will it ever happen and is that correct?
@@trevordance5181 yep there are plans of building new railways in the philippines but funding it is a problem. Since our president is a basically a puppet of china, we're basically just going into a debt trap.
Looks like a great cycle way
These videos always bring a smile to my face. Great work Geoff and Viki. Thank you sponsors for making it possible.
Doctor Daniel Donovan Sr was the famous "Famine Doctor" during the Irish Famine. A bit of a folk hero in Ireland, especially in Waterford and Cork. His son was also a doctor and selflessly went into a typhus (complicated by Measles, apparently) epidemic to provided succour and aid to the infected. He lasted a few months before being infected himself and dying. So Dan Donovan could be either Dan Donovan Sr, MD or Dan Donovan Jr, MD. Hope that helps.
My darling wife and I will be walking the entire greenway in June I'll do a bit and she will do the entire walk and she is so looking forward to it,ps Vicky looks like she is really enjoying Ireland
Calm has been restored to my world. You waved goodbye at the end! You need to finish with a drone shot (like yesterday) every now and again just waken the likes of me up! On a different note: I am sure the WSV will get loads more passengers thanks to this. If they invest the extra money in a diddy driving bike van I hope they invite you back for the opening.
I believe that Vicky is a natural and should get into documentary presenting. I mean.. seriously.
Oh, absolutely!
Both are excellent. Dan donovan tunnel was named after a man who worked on the railways in wexford and when he retired put his expertise into this development. Nearly 50 years ago I worked on the railway and he was what was known as an inspector basically a foreman but with quite a bit of knowledge on how the track system should be worked.
The moquette on the seats in that refreshment room carriage was commonplace all over the Irish Republic until the introduction of the new batches of trains that you're currently riding on it's all but disappeared now, glad you got a chance to see it.
Pedantic point: There has never been a direct railway connection between Cork and Waterford. Specifically, Youghal to Dungarvan is like the Darien Gap of Irish railways! 😛
Guys, should have kept going down the Greenway to Dungarven. Stunning views awaited.
I love the Waterford & Suir Valley Railway! That was my first train ride in Ireland!
It's 4:30am, I'm sick, and this is precisely the content I need.
Hope you are feeling better
@@RicardoD957 Thank you! It turned out it was just some indigestion trying to playact as something more serious
@@StairStealer glad it's not serious
The railway went from Waterford to Mallow with 14 intermediate stops including Dungarvan, Lismore and Fermoy. Also they will be building a Greenway from Midleton to Youghal.
The train is called Enterprise !!! Love it.
Enterprise-J, from an episode of StarTrek: Enterprise.
I used to live in Nova Scotia, Canada and they have a similar network to the Greenways where the trains used to run. They call it Rails to Trails. It isn't usually paved, though. It's gravel.
I don't think there's anything better than trains, they make my day :)
You’ll get to sample the other Tayto crisps when you get to Northern Ireland
Your videos make me want to visit Ireland
I love it when old railways get turned into Greenways. I used the Spen Valley Greenway in West Yorkshire a lot when I lived that way. Sadly it doesn't have a miniature railway or cafe in sn old carriage, but it has some interesting poetry and sculptures and gave me an 8 mile commute without needing to cross any roads, which is pretty awesome.
The Dungarvan line went all the way to Mallow via Dungarvan, Lismore and Fermoy!
If one ever finds themself in Liguria, Italy there is an absolutely amazing former train line converted into a bike path and walking trail between San Lorenzo and San Remo in the province of Imperia. It was a single track line running directly along the coast to avoid the mountains, it has stunning views of the coastline, goes through multiple old train tunnels and along old station buildings and there are a ton of little coastal towns where you can get an ice cream, drink an Espresso or go to the beach.
brill to see cycling/walking rail paths. so much history to learn about past times/ why line was here, what industries used the line ..etc. having an adventure.
It is nice to see you enjoying this A.T.S. Adventure in in Ireland 🇮🇪.
Cracking video...Tough trying to re cord while your cycling
You folks need to add a GoPro Camera in your kit. For a helmet mount or bike mount...they are water-proof, too...
I love the video. I've ridden the whole length of the greenway in both directions in stages over three separate days while staying near Dungarvan. You got the easy bit to ride. The path gets steeper going from Kilmeaden to Kilmacthomas. The trains to the magnesite factory near Dungarvan used to be double headed as they had to restart on the gradient.
Awww that miniature railway was so cute 😄
Great work Geoff and Vicki
Another wonderful adventure! I’ve been totally hooked on all your wonderfully creative videos and can’t wait for more!! In the States we have an organization called Rails-To-Trails. It’s purpose is to organize local groups to convert abandoned rail lines into multipurpose pathways. Right now, it’s at the a state/local level, but the hope is to connect them to connect all (sounds like LOTR) into a coast-to-coast network.
Can’t wait until I’m able to travel to the UK again and start my own rail adventure!
Im watching from denmark
You guys are having a lot of Fun.
Good vid and looks a good place to visit when I go again. Plus you eat the best crisps in the world tayto.
All the Stations Denmark should be next!
Rail lines to bike paths. A new series? May I recommend The Tissington Trail.
The Downs Link!
Delightful!
Come and ride the Brampton Valley Way when you've finished Ireland.
Hi I think this is a great use of disused line for people to use on bikes electric personnel transport ect.
Superb bonus video, really enjoyed this. And a great use for what was once a Mark 2 railway carriage, turn it into a cafe. Brilliant.
Time is marching on. You must be two thirds done by now. Soon you'll be wizzing down to Derry/Londonderry.
I hope there will be something more on Limerick. Then Galway, Westport, Sligo, Drogheda great for the drone and Belfast.
Traveling around Ireland by train is tremendous.
All the Bike Paths !!
This is my home line , I've photos of it as a railway through Kilmac but now it is superb. It's a shame you didn't go out to Kilmacthomas as the viaduct is worth a visit on its own as is the Ballyvoile one just a little further down. Its crying out for Mr C's Drone Footage as the whole line is stunning scenery once out of the City of Waterford and along the Copper Coast. Check out the Waterford Greenway FB Page.
Really enjoy the videos of Ireland trip[
Hello Geoff and Vicky!
The Waterford and Suir Valley Railway is a 3 foot, narrow gauge railway along approximately 10 km/6 miles of track from Kilmeadan back towards Waterford. With a journey time of around 45 minutes. The line shares much of its route along the banks of River Suir with the Waterford Greenway. This passes through the station which offers parking and a coffee shop with facilities for visitors. Apart from the station platforms there are currently two other halts, built in 2017, at Mount Congreve and Bilberry on the outskirts of Waterford. The railway currently uses diesel locomotives.
A Mark 2 railway carriage serves as the ticket office and shop. Light refreshments are available at the station. Indoor and outdoor tables are available for picnics. A large carpark provides ample parking for coaches and cars. All facilities are wheelchair accessible.
This is an area rich in history dating back to the Vikings. The rolling stock includes a restored Simplex Locomotive, which had an arduous working life in the peat industry in the North of England and Scotland. It was also used in excavating the Channel Tunnel. It now hauls two carriages with fully enclosed and partially opened seating to choose from. All weather protections is available for the open section. Enjoy a leisurely journey traveling at an average speed of 15km per hour. Other restored diesel engines are on display at the station. Kind regards, Peter Skuce. St Albans. Hertfordshire.
Great series, I wish I could do it myself. It seems like all fun but I know it’s hard work to make these videos You are my favorite RUclips couple. Best of luck!!
You should do the heritage railway next time
oh my god, they're going to kill Kenny!
Andy Harding bast***s
Let's just be thankful they're not going to Kilbarrack while a former US President is in town 🤣
Excellent series! Good job guys!
All the bicycles. All the bicycles. All the bicycles. Doo doo do doo-doo
Great series looks great on a large screen!
Nice little bonus video, fantastic, thankyou once again
While you were at the Cafe on the WSVR, on the Radio you could hear the commentary from Waterford vs Limerick in the National Hurling League Final. it was being played in Croke Park in Dublin at the time.
A nice interlude from the trains (unless you count the wee choo-choo).
A thought has just occurred to me for a future series. I've seen adverts for holidays around Ireland travelling in a horse drawn gypsy caravan. I'd love to see you two do something like that in the future. Just think of all the extra castles that Vicki could visit that aren't near the railway.
I wouldn't recommend a horse drawn gypsy caravan for a few reasons, but always so welcome to have the guys visit more of what we have to offer
What a great day out - a 'must visit'! Really interesting programme. (BTW: great cutaways after your PTC)
Great bonus
Long live the Cheese & Onion Tayto...that's what childhoods were made of,with a little bottle of Club red lemonade.
Great vid. The Waterford green way is fab
Cool video. Happy New Year 2020 🍾🥂🎊🎉😎
I'm so happy you included this Jeff, it's actually more amazing at Christmas.
Epic intro. You two make me happy :D.
Cute railway. Also epic idea with the postcards.
I didn't look into the whole backing system quite enough and now I'm sorry.
Happy traintravels though, even if by bike.
Vicky, it's like Freddie Mercury was back with us!
To the bikes!
Hi Geoff. In your 2017 barnstable to I forgot where episode you mentioned that the barnstable line was stopped at Barnstable. Did you know that at Barnstable station there is cycle hire where you can follow the old railway. There's even an abandoned platform at Instow where you can visit the signal box.
It's sad seeing railway bridges and tracks no longer in use. (Dr. Beeching are you listening????)
But it is lovely to see the track beds converted for public, like the bike track.
Sadly he would be listening from the grave but is probably turning in it.
It's a shame you didn't have time to travel all the way to Dungarvan as you would have gone through a great tunnel and seen all the houses where the fairies live
4:53 PURPLE TRAIN!!
Great bonus video! 👍 Loved the Ticket Office! Kilmeadan how would you rate it Vicki...was it cute or quaint? I know it's not the same as the other stations, but just wondered. You are both doing a wonderful job! 💕 ...take care!
A proper caf in a proper coachbody, love it ! Do they serve egg, sausage, chips and beans ?
0:00 CYCLING WHILE LAUGHING AT A CAMERA!!! It's a actually less weird than it seems when you are from the point of view of the camera.
Also, how many times did you need to run back and forth to get all those shots of you guys cycling?
Nicholas Tryand several!! 🤣
That way is very green but not as green as the green train
enjoying your videos daily😀Hi from Romaina!!
Suir is pronounced Sure btw. love the videos from ireland!
Damn, as I watch this video, I'm getting more and more convinced that learning Irish language is a great thing to do
is maith liom caca milis
It's an interesting language, right enough.
FYI guys ! There is an old disused railway in Derry/Londonderry. So it is a greenway but there is not train anymore. A lovely cycle though.
Called The Line.
Nice touch they've got there with the narrow gauge railway line next to the cycleway. Pity the traction is diesel and not steam, though...
Lovely, well done. Suir valley pronounced Sure valley.
When you do the Ballybrophy to Limerick branch call into Nenagh its got a castle!
Do they make police 2 tone horns in Breach?
There has to be a Southpark joke in the next episode regarding one of the destinations, surely...and don't call me Shirley!
Seriously, those holes in the Donovan sign were not made by an air rifle...
A few of those holes in the sign seemed a little big foe an air rifle!!!!!
small train is entertaining.
seen...liked...tick
Don't you just hate it when the county turns a perfectly good rail line into a greenway!
if we need in future it wont be so difficult to convert now. It was a bitch to secure the land from the farmers who were disfiguring the old route.
Bike Aboard in Cleveland and Akron Ohio on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad!
I would love a postcard
3:05 Dan Donovan was the man responsible for laying the narrow gauge railway - see www.wsvrailway.ie/journeysites.shtml
Hi! From Denmark. :)
3:50 - "It's five minutes away... there'll be the cafe, right?" :D
6:08 - I think that train needs bike *carriage* , because there would be a pack of cyclists, willing to board it at this point.
How long did they say it was? And its all flat. As far as bike rides go thats easy mode, we dont wanna turn into those people from UP do we? Wheelchair access I would understand, but if you can ride there, you can ride back 😂
@@ryanparker4996 the total of is 46k
@@ryanparker4996 one way
Let´t see, trains, buses, private cars, taxis, now bikes, we haven´t seen you hitch hike with a lorry or a motorbike yet, some more kinds of vehicles to try...
I was born in Waterford 🇮🇪
I can just hear “You’re on camera, you’re on camera” in the background at 5:53😐
Joeyyy Xavier. You’re. Otherwise doesn’t make sense.
You are right
That miniature train is cute/quaint but you didn't say it!
Wholesome.
All the bike sheds next?
;-) At 5:33 a little bit of Benny Hill acton going on? Or very enegetic passengers ;-)
In Ireland the signs are written in English and in Gaelic. Since you are In Ireland might it be fitting for you to write "all the STATIONS" in Gaelic on your kickstarter website?
No, they’re written in Irish and English. The language is not called Gaelic.
