As a student at Keele University in the early 1990s, I took the National Express to Gatwick Airport twice at midnight, an eerie experience! Never again. Good that a new station has been built! Long overdue!
My grandparents lived in a house that was on the corner of Charles Street and Birch Terrace before the bus station was built. Unfortunately, the bus station is a symptom of the industrial decline of the Potteries and the corruption that has been rife in the Labour run council and the rot that set in with Thatcher's government. Since then there has been the commoditisation of education, the lack of opportunities and a complete lack of will to implement any real long term solutions backed with the cash to make them effective. Those older folks remind me of the fab people I grew up knowing. Real people with fascinating stories to tell. I no longer live in Stoke on Trent but as time goes by I do think about happy memories of growing up in the city. My memories of the shambolic school that let me down and some of the less nice people like the gang of skinheads who attacked the small group of friends I was walking home with in the old bus station. I suppose the bad memories always give way to the good.
An excellent video, loved every bit of it. The lovely man talking about his cat and the PDSA is a real star! Hope you are keeping well and don't worry the bus station is due for demolition soon!
l used to work in Stoke on Trent place called Come n save next to Bevans music shop in the late eighties in Longton the people are very nice but the place needs regeneration l believe he passed away Mr Ellis bevan a few years back ...nice guy l am from manchester 😊
The words made in stoke on trent used to mean something but now that the potteries industy has been shipped off abroad so they can get away with slave labour stoke is now full of warehouses and agencies giving out minimum hour contracts its a god daamn shame!
Bloody nora, know hanley bus station like the back of me hand...i left Stoke for Bristol some 16 year ago, and unlike Chris Lawton underneath...i still love my hometown (warts an all) UTMP!
Wow am I glad I left . My family still live there thats the only thing i miss. I will never go back. I know you`ll understand why i feel this way ,after you`ve seen this vid.
I left Stoke in 1987 and thought Hanley Bus station was bad then but this documentary is scary, both as a reflection of this particular place and of British society as a whole. Brilliantly produced piece of work all the same.
Great footage, superb editing and great sound. You presented Hanley bus station just as I remember it. I was waiting for a lighter hearted moment at night just to balance it out - but I guess Hanley Bus Station is what it is.
I grew up in Bucknall in the 70's/80's so we'd be up 'anley (duck) all the time. Stoke like many other places in the UK lost the prosperity and self respect it once had a long time ago with the demise of the potteries, the mines, the Michelin factory, etc. At least in the past there was work, now it's little wonder they head straight for Stoke whenever they want to film somewhere deprived...
Dead on.proper Stokie accent " compared to Nottingham and other places I think this town is filthy, and I don't know how the council, have got a cheek to call this a city centre! Because it's nothing but a junked up little town"
I live in stoke, and i agree that hanley bus station is rough, i thought that in the 70's and it isn't any better now. However, i think that most people think this about the bus/train depo's where they live as well. the fact is: What can we do as a nation to make these places better!... iff you know how please let me know...
Its not that bad. I'm from Cheadle nearby and moved away and there are some parts of the old place I miss. Trust me, there are a lot worse places than Stoke, I especially miss the characters you find around the place, believe me when I say Stoke is full of weird and wonderful people.
***** Well the simple solution to that then is to leave quite simply put. Theres noting really stopping you. I left relatively easily for pastures new, but honestly, Stoke isn't that much different from many other places in regards to what you're talking about. I live in lancaster now and I've found 90% of the north west to be even worse than Stoke, so just bear that in mind when thinking about these things.
Create your own chances man - i'm sure you're capable of far more than you realize, just believe in yourself mate. I'm in the exact same position, in the exact same city lol - I'll be out of this shithole soon and so you will if you try pal ;)
I'm from Cheadle too, the ness grove area. But moved away from Stoke on Trent, there are no prospects for anyone there, there are no jobs and the drug problems are out of control. two of the old characters i miss are Georgey Pegg and Duke, them two were always in the black horse or the castle, i always used to play cards with them back in the good old days. I now live in Oxford and it's 10 times the place that Stoke and Cheadle are.
I'm from Walsall, but I live in Stoke for uni. It ain't the most attractive place but the vast majority of Stokies I've met are good people. Chavs are just chavs, you can't use them as examples of local people. I'm hardly from the most picturesque place on earth anyway so I've got no reason to be snobby, haha.
lived just over the road from the bus station 15yrs ago it was just the same then . 15yrs on still no change? like the vid tho but i think most towns in the uk have places just like this .
Lost my phone to a dirty chav in Hanley, doesn't say much for Stoke in general though; there are lots of pretty places, it's the dense city area's like Hanley/Newcastle-U-Lyme that CAN be horrid. From my experience; the area's around Penkhull (the fields and whatnot) are quite beautiful.
it makes me sick that only a couple of years ago when someone made a negative remark about Stoke, the local newspaper 'The Sentinel'....were giving away 'I'm proud of the Potteries' car stickers....and you could see them everywhere,......THATS why Stoke will never change...too many people here think its ok the way it is....and its a SHIT-HOLE.....!!!!!!!!!!!
brilliant, really well made you have defintley highlighted the fatcs well. Hanley bus station is a fucking disgrace, i feel sorry for the people who have to use it everyday, Thankgod ive left stoke.. keep up the film making you have talent :)
The council are to blame for the downfall of Stoke on Trent. We lost the pottery industry, as the unions pushed the wages to an unprofitable level, so the businesses moved abroad. The councils should have stepped in to provide initiatives for alternative employment. Instead, we ended up with 1000's more people living on benefits. Nothing is being done about the homeless and the drug addicts. Less police on the ground too. No deterrent for bored teenagers looking for a quick buzz of adrenaline, or some easy cash. Parents are likely at home, smashed out of their skulls, and have no idea where their kids are. We need a system where in order to receive 100% of your benefit, you have to do a minimum of 20 hours a week litter-picking. flower bed digging or graffiti scrubbing etc, things may improve. If you're not willing to do the minimum work, you only get 50% of your benefit. Disabled folks would be exempt, unless suitable work could be assigned. We are suffering at the hands of those that don't mind living in their own filth.
oh dear. great video, really sums up what I think of stoke, not a nice place to live at all. if you dubbed the voices I don't think viewers would take much more persuasion to believe this was shot in Ukraine or Moldova.
So weird seeing the old bus station, there's a new one now. Mindblowing honestly
im stoke and proud, ive lived here over 40 years, but ive seen it go from a thriving city , to a shambles in the last 20 years.
I've lived in this shithole my whole life and was relieved to finally get out and move up to Leek earlier this year.

Great cafes in the bus station when I visited Hanley back in the day gone down hill since
It's definitely gone downhill recently, the state of what's left of it.

Very interesting.
My dad worked here on the buses for many many years.
I wonder what he thinks of it now. What a state.
nice work, love the characters. Paints a bit of a bad picture but, I really liked the old guy who got a bit upset. Hope you bought him a brew.
My thoughts entirely
This is a really decent documentary
It actually is!!!
Does anyone know (Scribbler09) the xbox gamer? He's often seen cruising round Bus station.
Really enjoyed that, thanks.

This bus station was a bin from the moment it was built.
Now you can see why they closed it and built a new bus station.

that bus station is fooking dire!!
3:20 cobridge to change me socks LMFAO!
Yes they must have been RANK!!!
brings back memories from early 90's when used to go to Morley's Bakehouse then cut through to go to Shipley's to play pool
Fantastic!! MORE!!!

Yep it sure is
If Hell exists, it must look a bit like Stoke on Trent.
I have to disagree with that comment. It would look a LOT like it!!
Demolished and there's new one which is so congested!
It's not like this now, there's a new bus station that's better.
Barely. It's got better in the last 30 years, but in the last 10 it's barely changed. Same scum, they're just spread out over a bigger space.
