I must have gotten lucky, my EXO-U doesn't rattle at all when closed and just a little when open. The EXO-M I have is much more rattlier . Pushing down on the blade holding spring with my thumb won't disengage the blade unless I push it to the side, but I also haven't used it in any heavy duty way. Now I'll have to try it to see if it will happen while using it on more then just opening boxes. I do have to agree, it's not really meant to be a heavy user. I wouldn't try to use it to cut carpet or anything like that.

Great extensive review. I almost bought one to use at work to replace my fastback. That rattle that dulls the blade didnt even cross my mind.

I have the same EXO U and I find it amazing for the lighter to smaller tasks, for tasks that need more umph (but still utility blade) I go for the Tyrant Exceed. Though I got the second gen I find it a really nice titanium body with rlly smooth action, sad to hear you didnt like the Exo U. Solid content and wish you a good day.

Thanks, Dood! I love when people actually use their shit and give honest reviews! I was thinking about picking this up but the spring position makes no sense. I bought the new blacked out Exo with blued titanium inlays and that it fantastic. IDK if it's just in my head but I think the black PVD coating makes it smoother.

Hate to be an absolutist but every utility blade holder needs to be able to handle hard use. That is what they are for, and xacto blades are for light duty or super precise cuts, and you are honest and we appreciate that.

I wondered about that strange spring blade holding design. Seems like they could have utilized a more common system. I carry an olight otacle u1. It’s $25 it has a crossbar lock but with a pretty decent “detent” and uses a small thumb screw to change the blade. The action is very snappy there is zero rattle and it seems pretty tough. Only downside I have is it’s pretty small so for a user like you it may not work I don’t usually need to bare down super hard, but I have a few times and it was fine. Thanks for the honest review!

Have you considered the new Civivi Elementum Utility? Pretty much a regular knife shape with a razor blade. Does have a screw to swap blades however.

Yeah the screw was the only thing that turned me off

I love the fidget factor and for what i need a knife for it does everything well, but when its in my pocket it rattles like crazy and it sounds like a maraca in my pocket and it seems to only have gotten worse with use and im planning on retiring it

The way they did the holder is a terrible design honestly. I have the Civivi one and while you do need to take out a torx screw to change out the blade, the blade is rock solid in the hold, there’s no play whatsoever in the pivot and the entire length of the utility blade is exposed for cutting. Overall a much much better design ✌🏻

Thank you for this! I always felt like I was the only who thought this would not be a good idea for a utility knife. Although the magnetic issue wouldn’t be a problem in my work setting everything else just seems to be what I wouldn’t want on a utility cutter. I think the one to try out is the Exceed Designs TiRant V3. Full titanium flipper with a pinch mechanism to release the blade so no tools necessary.
