I'm sooooo glad you decided to use the candies at the end. its way more fun to see the final fights when you're at the needed level. Time is the worst enemy here, and we have the technology to beat it!
Honestly, I don't see it as cheating when the only strategy available is grinding. All it's doing is saving the content creator some time. I support all Poketubers hacking in rare candy in such scenarios.
We need more pseudo-legendaries on the show. Bagon would be a pretty interesting challenge.
I don't know if he already did it (plus comments are good for the RUclips algorithm), but a Gibble run would also be on point

I tried Beldum in Emerald. I thinks it's impossible.
@@jj_colombia97 she was beatable with crazy critluck (about 200 tries), but drake is the endboss. I think it is statistically possible to beat him but the Chancen are about 1:1000000000. I calculated something like that.

Haha, glad to see the Rare Candy stuff in action. Looking at things I think you might have been able to win without that last batch if you threw yourself at it long enough, but you probably would have needed to either call it quits or work on Christmas to pull that off. Still was very nice to see and was interesting to see the various walls that Red posed and just what it took to overcome it! Glad you enjoyed your Christmas present from all of us!

Hey so here's a cool little thing The reason you were able to tank polyraths surd is because you were training against tentacruel and mantine! They both buff your special defense!!
Even if the Gen 1/2 stat experience is different from modern EVs, that's still true!
@@robertlupa8273 chances are his stat exp would have been maxed out at that point, it was just a low roll

@@AutisticJesusGaming I know. Im saying they were probably already maxed out by how much grinding he had to do, especially since larvitar was in a slow exp curve. If you were referring to the actual stats instead of stat exp then I'm sorry to say that's wrong
@@Raine-bow I wouldn't be too sure, max EV in a stat takes a whopping 65535. Which, without pokerus or vitamins, would equal about 650 Pokemon with 100 base stat or 1300 pokemon with 50 base stat (the latter being a much more realistic portrayal of what you fight until then). When you consider that, even with an average of 100 exp per pokemon (which is prolly a low estimate by lv 40+ over the whole run), 130k exp would still be way more than lv 40 (lv 40 larvitar is 80k exp iirc, and lv 50 is 150k exp roughly iirc, so 130k must be somewhere past 45), I doubt he's gonna be maxxed by then. Maybe close, maybe even barely there, bit from personal experience I wouldn't be so sure
The rare candies in 5 level increments right at the end was really clean.

I would love to see a Spoink only challenge in Emerald. Starts with only Splash and gets Psywave at Level 7, your absolute FAVORITE move :p

I suggest a Red/Blue run with only Magmar. If you look at its move list you’ll understand why.
If you want throw in no Tms for added challenge I’m pretty sure magmar would have one of the highest base stat totals for a mon in a single run that you’ve done so far.
Wtf, thats the first time I ever checked it, guess its another hitmon situation where they didnt expect you to have a magmar at a low level so they just didnt bother with early level moves.
Damn. Nothing but Ember until level 36, when he finally learns..... Leer. A move that will make Struggle do a bit more damage and nothing else. Now this I've gotta see

Thank you for the video. Glad you decided to use the rare candy cheat for the post game. There's really no need to grind at that point since it's obvious that you could increase your Pokemon's level at that point without difficulty, it'd just take forever to do it.
"My coin case turned into Rare candies!!??" honestly, one of the most unexpected sentence I've ever heard. 😂
I think I know how the Venusaur took significantly less damage during the level 90 fight (@ 20:12) compared to the level 95 fight (@20:34). First, I'm assuming both fights started as Pikachu -> Espeon -> Venusaur. Pikachu was slower in both fights, so it's not caused by Charm. Espeon is faster than Larvitar in the level 90 fight, and used Reflect on its first turn. That allowed it to survive an Earthquake, so it could use Psychic on the 2nd turn before fainting. I think the Espeon still outsped during the level 95 attempt, but used Psychic on turn 1 instead of Reflect. Without using Reflect, an Earthquake would one shot Espeon. That would explain why Larvitar had a similar amount of HP going into Venusaur in both fights, and also explains why Venusaur took roughly x2 as much damage during the level 95 attempt in comparison to the level 90 attempt

Definitely happy for you to use the rare candy cheat when needed. We all wanna see the possible results of maxing out your level if needed, but we also understand that it takes a lot of real time out of your days to do it. You've put so much effort into these videos over the years, so thank you and happy new year!

The bit where you struggled to make the cheats work made me feel better because I always struggle to make them work. It takes me a minimum of 10 minutes and having to look across 5 websites.

I've got an interesting challenge for Pokemon Platinum.
You choose a starter as normal and only have that pokemon for the first gym. Then catch a new pokemon on the route before the next gym, and use only that pokemon for that gym. Repeat for all gyms, then out of all 8 pokemon, make a team of 6 and take on the elite 4 and champion.

There’s a hidden item in Kanto called the Bezerk Gene. It buffs your attack 2 stages but confuses you (held item). Using this even magikarp can beat Red (at max level). Maybe with this Larvitar can win around level 75 or so

@@robertlupa8273 I'm not sure, but I think they probably mean Fire Red/Leaf Green, so you get to see how the run changes between the original and the remake. But maybe that's not what they mean. Maybe they want to watch MDB stumble through a game in Japanese, which I would absolutely watch.

Keep in mind, in Gen 2 you can still keep getting EVs even after reaching lvl 100. You just need to deposit your Pokémon in the PC for them to register in your stats. So if you ever get stuck even at lvl 100 and you need more HP, Atk, Speed or anything else to win the fight, you can actually get them by training more.
Like I said in the comments, I would be happy so see a Corsola playthrough.
One of my favorite RUclipsrs of all time playing with one of my favorite Pokemon? This video is a win for me! How larvitar became one of my favorites is actually from a community day in Pokemon go. The larvitar event in Pokemon go was my first Pokemon go event and was a super wholesome day because of all the other Pokemon go players I ran into. Also I got a lot of shinies, and once I evolved all of them to tyranitar, they were by far the ace of my team. All those good memories makes the larvitar line my favorite. (Also I'm so used to only seeing the shiny form of the larvitar line that I sometimes thing the original color is the shiny one lol)

The elite four fights really show off how good an offensive pairing ground and rock are. They can hit a lot of things super effectively and there's no single type that resist both of them. They can hit bug, fire, flying, ice, electric, poison, rock, and steel. Eight types for super effective damage, which in generation 2 is 8/17 so basically half. Defensively though it has six weaknesses, two of which are double weaknesses to the very common water and grass types. But it at least has 5 resistances and an immunity.
And in solo pokemon runs the strategy often involves being faster than an opponent and one shotting them, so the offensive typing is what matters most. Except for the very difficult fights.
Top bad most Rock/Ground 'mons are slow as muk.

@@mikecabral2420 Yeah, it's pretty slow. 50 base speed, same as Weedle, Hoppip, Aggron, Regirock and many others.
Dang it I missed the premiere yet again. Last Saturday I show up and then remember you wasn't doing a challenge run that Saturday, then today I forget and then of course there's a challenge run up on the channel. I'll have to put an alarm on my phone to remind me instead of relying on memory to remind me, because I'm real good at missing the premieres here. Oh yeah, it's fine with me if you hack in Rare Candies, it saves a lot of time on grinding as we all know.

The game clock of how long you’ve been doing the run, either at decently paced points or just one at the end

The Larvitar Line is one of my favorite pokemon, so it's nice to see that you went all the way with the little guy. I'd love to see a run with Tyranitar proper, but I wager that would be too easy for you.
Before finishing: yes you can, because I did this exact challenge in my own gold game a few months ago and I was successful.

Oh, Larvitar ar is a nice one. I tried it too, but I didn't have the motiviation to win the battle against Red in the end.
I would like to see Diglett in Emerald. It will be fine until after the fourth or fifth gym, but will struggle when the water part starts. It is super fast, but it has only 30 and 45 base defense/ special defense and a demolishing 10 in base attack. We've seen it in Red and FIre Red so far, but I think Emerald is the even harder boss.

@@AutisticJesusGaming 55 isn't that great good for a first form but trapinch and mudbray are both first forms as well and they both have a hundred
pretty sure this isn't possible. Diglett is super frail, and unlike in Gen 1, Gen 3 has abilities, and a lot of stuff has Levitate making ground useless. That, and Tate and Liza..
@@TogashiJack he's done emerald challenges before with only one Pokemon and Diglett doesn't only have ground moves to attack with it can get aerial ace Rock tomb and thief through TM
Tip: You could have used Protect on the Solarbeam turn and also to stall Reflect. Great video as usual. Love your work.

Definitely an enjoyable video! In regards to rare candies, I personally don't care if and/or when you use them. They give you a level but you don't get any stat boosts from grinding up to those levels so the Pokémon is technically weaker than if you grinded.
Wrestling references in places you wouldn't normally expect - like a Pokemon challenge - make me smile like an idiot every time. Keep being you, MDB. 💖

I love how you made even the process of cheating rare candies into the game entertaining. And I mean, that's part of what you had to do, and it WAS somewhat challenging, right ? It's technically part of this challenge and I love that you included it.
