Small Rifle Primer Evaluation using 6.5 Creedmoor Peterson Brass

- In this video we test 9 different small rifle primers in 6.5 Creedmoor. Velocity and group data is provided. Primers tested are CCI BR4, CCI 400, CCI 450, S&B, Winchester SR, FED 205M, FED 205MAR, Rem 7 1/2 BR, and CCI 41. I use Hodgdon H4350 in Peterson Brass with 140 ELD-M by Hornady to statistically analyze the primers to determine which one gives the best results.

I think this is a great testament to H4350 as well as the brass. That powder is legitimately one of the best out there. It doesn’t care what you do with it it almost always shoots excellent

Wow this was a lot of work. Great job, this is good information. The results are very interesting. The 5 shot groups represent what your gun is doing. Stop trying to make yourself feel better with the 4 shot group thing. A 10 shot group would be more informative but I realize the added time and cost. Again great job and thanks for sharing.

Great testing...looks like great brass...I think I'm going to try the 'Fat Neck' large primer stuff in 6.5CM, turn the necks down to SAAMI specs and see how they do with Fed 210M primers, using H4350 and H100V for powders...thanks for the video!
Glad someone was willing to go through all the trouble/ bullshit to find out about small primers on 6.5CM, which may I add you picked a great rifle to test them on...I have one myself :) Love my 6.5 RPR. some of those had quite a spread not something I see with my RPR.... think I'll stick with large, hell my RPR reminds me of a virgin every time I shoot groups, no need for small. My Hornady 140 gr soft tip are at 2.846 at the land and BTHP at 2.826 ( or may be the other way around ? ), I just seat at 2.800 and load at 42.5 of H4350 with BR2 primers it all does a great job for me. Thanks for the test, I was wondering about that a few days ago when I heard Peterson brass made small PP.

I started using Peterson brass Last Summer. It is very nice to work with and seems very uniform. I think it is likely to last longer then the Hornady brass that I was using before. I also found a deal on Hornady ELD M bullets from Midsouth Shooters. They sell blemished bullets in packs of 250 for a better price than the standard box of bullets. One advantage of having a large number of bullets is that I can wait sort them to the nearest 1/10 of the grain. The price is better and weight sorting seems to help somewhat. I don't see any significant deterioration of the accuracy by using the blemished bullets. I'm not sure what makes them blemished, I don't see any apparent deformation and do not measure any significant difference with a caliper. Perhaps they are not as concentric in the core. But, I can't measure that.
wayne Pursell the blemishes are strictly cosmetic ie jacket color/polish, tip color inconsistency, etc, they are not physically different at all from the non-blemished bullets, they just didn’t meet QC for appearance. I spoke to Hornady directly about the blems being sold midsouth and Hornady confirmed this for me, they said that no misshaped bullets would be sold, only ones that didn’t meet their QC on appearances.
I'd like to see a cold weather test between small rifle primers magnum and non magnum.

I think i got these from wideners before it got sold, academy had tons of tula srm primers up until a year ago, but i unknowingly used them in ar loads like an idiot not knowing they were coveted. I dont think it really matters, i mean you got good numbers with regular ass primers so outside of some wealthy benchrest shooter thats willing to pay a lot for them its not worth it for normal people
What’s your opinion on the SRP starline vs Peterson.?
So far Peterson. I am going to neck turn some of my starline to see if it improves my statistics, but Peterson gave me some great numbers with basically no case prep.
Bolt Action Reloading second question. Do you know if the lee collet die will work on this brass.? I see it will take a smaller decapping pin than what dies might normally come with. Sorry for the question but I’m out of town so I can’t measure my pin.
No worries at all. Just measured mine and its .062 and it's a no go. I tried it on a piece. I am sure it would work on the LRP, but not the srp. You have that lathe you could turn it down I would think. Make everyone jealous. 😁
HELP!! When reloading Is it safe to use a Large Rifle Magnun primer on a 30 06 with the H4350 powder or should i try small rifle primer? Can't find any Large Rifle primers? Thank you for you content.

Think it was more important to test large (standard) vs small and does it make a difference?
I have ran this test on LR hornady and LR sig brass as well. If you are picking SR primer brass you are choosing it for case life plain and simple. So trying to see what primer you want to match with that brass is the key.
@@BoltActionReloading Thanks, Found and checked it out, was curious as lapua also uses SR primer pockets and wanted to see if any difference. From both charts i used the FED M primer specs so LR is about 2675 vs SR 2641. Couldn't use CCI as both charts said BR4 and wasn't sure.
Im the first to comment!. Love the video! Just one question. Are you able to find all these primers locally where you are at or are you having to order them online? My local shop only has Winchester, CCI and Federal.

Looking back at to your December 30 2016 video with this load, ruclips.net/video/ZRtYovyZbLw/видео.html, do you feel the Peterson brass and small primer is a significant improvement from where you were then with Hornady brass and Fed 210 (non-match) large primers?
Sorry for the slow response I don't regularly check my spam comments folder and I guess including the link put it in there. That aside, I guess it depends on your definition of "significant" If you are shooting less than 500 yards you frankly might not care to be honest. But the significantly lower ES on the Peterson as well as having such consistent groups tells the story for me. The Peterson is not significantly more expensive than the Hornady brass, and frankly it all depends on what being able to lower the ES / SD and the extended brass life is worth to you. How do you switch from large primers to small primer pls
It's what brass you order. They offer both for this specific brand and cartridge.

Yes, be aware of different case capacities as well as depending on the primer the SR primers crater earlier unless you bush your bolt for a smaller firing pin.
